A Comparative Study on the Image characteristics in Traditional Palaces of Korea, China and Japan (한 중 일 궁궐 건축의 이미지 특성 비교 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to find the unique image characteristics of Korea and identify the Korea culture by comparing the image characteristics of traditional palaces of Korea, China and Japan. This study identifies the unique image characteristics of Korea through a comparative analysis the image of three nations. Literature research, free association measurement, survey were conducted to select study objects and descriptive words. 5 outside-pictures and 2 inside-pictures of the Changduckung, the Forbidden City, the Nijo castle representing each country's traditional palaces were chosen as study objects. A questionnaire was made with 47 descriptive words and 5-scale measurement. The results of analysis are as follows. The representative words to express the image characteristics of Korea, China and Japan traditional palaces are adornment, stability, openness, lines, unfamiliarity, feminine. This study researched the common and different factors between the image characteristics in traditional palaces of Korea, China and Japan. The common image is the image of lines. The distinctive characteristics of Korea are stability, curved lines and femininity. The characteristics of China are adornment and straight lines. And, the characteristics of Japan are simplicity, unfamiliarity, and openness. Based on the research, it was found out that stability and curved lines are the main characteristics of Korea. This study researches the characteristics of images of Korea, China and Japan. This study shows the common and different factors of image characteristics of in the neighboring three nations of East Asia. Due to the geographical and cultural effect over a long time, the Korea was evaluated as the middle cultural between China and Japan. However, this study found unique characteristics of Korea's image.

  • This study lists the vocabulary of the inscriptions on SeoGwol-YeongGeon-DoGam-UiGwe(西闕營建都監儀軌 1831). This study also deciphers and explains the meanings of them. In advance, this study compares them with the vocabulary of the national language in the middle ages and in modem times. There are two important missions in deciphering a transcription marking of the architectural vocabulary of UiGwe(儀軌). One is to gain an understanding of the reading method of transcription marking and the other is an explanation of what that means. As a result, we can correctly understand the UiGwe(儀軌) written in transcription marks. If we could decipher the transcription markings of the documents as it is, we cannot only recover plenty of vocabulary related with characteristic architecture in the age of the later Joseon Dynasty, but also correct wrongly used vocabulary in the present. As a result, we can standardize and adjust the vocabulary use of Korean traditional architecture. In advance, we can correct errors of spelling and mistaken explanations in the Korean Encyclopedia.

A Study on the Lexicon-Use Behaviour of Architects & the Basic Lexicons in House Design (주택디자인에서 건축가들의 어휘 사용행태 및 기본어휘에 관한 연구)

  • This paper analyzed statistically two corpora that were constructed from the texts about house designs written by Korean architects and PA Awards architects. The main results are as follows; (1) The numbers of words in Korean house-design corpus were 9,352 and those of words in PA Awards house design corpus were 2,379. The former were 18.7% and the latter 4.8% of about 50,000 words regarded as the rest using scale in actual life. (2) When the architects described their house designs, the lexicon-concentration phenomenon was pervasive in both groups. Therefore, we can infer that the high-frequency lexicons are very important in house design. (3) The architects' behaviour patterns of using the house-design lexicons, went by rules according to the word frequency order. The tendency formulas of them had the $R^{2}$ values which were more than 90%. (4) In Korean house design corpus, the high frequency lexicons were '공간', '층', '주택', '집', '대지', '거실', and '실'. In PA awards house design corpus, they were 'house','room','space','living','wall','level' and 'area'. From these results, We can tell that 'space' is the highest frequency word in house design of the two groups, and that '대지 ' and 'wall' are the words that reveal well the differences between the two groups.

  • This paper presents the concept of dynamically reconfigurable space by introducing smart building components. Thanks to the advances in ubiquitous computing and ITC technology, we are able to expect, in the near future, the aspects of future buildings which may transform their appearance and states to perform specific functions. In other words, it is certain that the building space will actively reconfigure itself to accommodate user's needs once we acquire proper technologies. Based on the assumption that building components may not be transformed through the magical process, but change its physical states (e.g. transparency, illumination, display contents, etc.) and functions of embedded devices (e.g. audio, actuators, sensors, etc.), we can envision a dynamically reconfigurable smart space. In order to conceptualize such spaces, critical surveys have been conducted on current works of leading architects. When the room needs to be used as a specific function room, the components need to change theirs states or to behave in a certain manner to create an optimum environment. Our model defines the relationships and elements to describe the mechanism of reconfigurable space. We expect this model provides a conceptual guideline for developing a smart building components based on spatial service scenarios. Therefore, a future smart spaces implemented by integrating various technologies are not designed in deterministic manner, so that spatial functions are expanded without constrained by physical existence.

  • The objectives of this study is to develop an adaptable digital wall model whose color can be changed dynamically according to the identified emotional state of a user. This study addresses how to capture a specific user's emotion through the web and use it for modifying VR model mainly for color adaptation. This adaptation process of a VR model consists of three phases: 1) identification of the user's emotional state projected onto the list of emotional keywords 2) translation of those captured emotional keywords into a pertinent set of color coordinations, and finally, 3) automated color adaptation process for the given model. This process derives an on-line viewer's emotional state, which can be utilized to find a new color scheme reflecting the identified emotion.

  • This study is an investigation that explication of the reading method of transcription marking, and explains what it means and where to use transcription marking of architectural vocabulary. focusing on timber class vocabulary from on SeoGwolYeongGeonDoGamUiGwe(${\ulcorner}$西闕營建都監儀軌(1831)${\lrcorner}$). This study is reviewed sequentially classifying items according to timber class, stone class, iron class architectural vocabulary. This treatise, named 'Architectural Vocabulary Study (1)', is mainly focused on making out a transcription marking of timber class vocabulary on the documents. But, because of the properties of the UiGwe(儀軌), there are some different expressions used for the same vocabulary. Therefore, the different expressions are referenced according to vocabulary used from the 17th century to the 20c century. This study lists timber class architectural vocabulary of transcription marking on SeoGwolYeongGeonDoGamUiGwe(${\ulcorner}$西闕營建都監儀軌(1831)$\lrcorner$). This study also explicates and explains the meaning of them. In advance, this study compares them with the vocabulary of national language in the middle ages and modern times. If we could explicate the transcription marking of the documents as it is, we can't only recover plenty of vocabulary related with characteristic architecture in the age of later Chosun Dynasty, but also correct wrongly used vocabulary nowadays. With the results, we can standardize and adjust vocabulary use of Korean traditional architecture. In advance, we can correct errors of spelling and mistaken explanation in the Korean Encyclopedia.

  • Purpose: This study aims to analyze the meaning of architectural space of Alvar Aalto, which is based on architectural theories of periodic flows and the form of the space with the various elements applied to the works. Method: It analyzes the interrelationships of light, form and material in triangular composition by synthesizing the architectural vocabulary of Alvar Aalto from the viewpoint of modernism. Results: The architectural works of Alvar Aalto are centered on the combination of light, form, material, and space diversity, emphasizing social awareness and linking the human scale with the building environment. Conclusion: The structure of the Alvar Aalto is a synonym of nature and culture, society and individuals, standardization and diversity, universality and locality, intellectual and emotional, scientific and human psychological. It is possible to apply reciprocity elements to architectural spaces in a comprehensive manner while being different from each other in terms of rationality and immediacy.

  • This study is meaningful in figuring out how much the Korean people's awareness of hanok has increased even though interest in hanok has also increased due to the Korean Wave craze. Therefore, with respect to the exterior of hanok, which is visually recognized first, the level of experts and ordinary people is grasped through a semantic discrimination scale, and the degree of visual recognition is to be investigated centering on the color image of hanok buildings. This is the process of thinking about how the Korean image should be reflected in the design, and we want to suggest the direction that modern hanok should go. The study compared and analyzed the difference in visual color based on the elevation of the hanok using a 7-point and 5-point scale method for the general public and experts, and utilized the IRI adjective vocabulary scale and the color matching image scale to construct new hanoks with insufficient differences in appearance and shape. It can be applied to design and image preservation and construction of existing hanok.

Characteristics of Environmental Color Image Vocabulary for Public Healthcare Facility (공공보건시설 환경색채이미지 어휘 특성)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of color image for establishing the color environment contributing to the promotion of public health in the public health facilities and to utilize it as data of public health color plan and index development. For this purpose, the results of the previous precedent studies were integrated and public health facilities were classified into medical facilities (general hospitals), health facilities (public health centers), and sub - healing facilities (elderly care facilities). We visited 18 public health facilities in total, measured the environmental color of with a spectroscopic, compared the results and the precedent studies results, and identified color image characteristics and future supplement points. The results are as follows. First, the previous studies related to the environment color image vocabulary of the public health facilities, it prefer comfortable, bright and positive image. Second, as a result of direct measurement the environmental color of the public health facilities, it is found that most of them use the high brightness and low saturation color of Y series. Third, as a result of analyzing vocabulary of environmental color image of public health facilities, 'natural' image showed the highest frequency, and other images such as 'gentle' and 'decent' appeared. It was difficult to understand the characteristics of the color image vocabularies of public health facilities. This study is a convergence study of color science and environmental design, and it extends the scope of multidisciplinary research related to design and it will be helpful in environmental planning on user's emotion.

  • 디지털 삶에서 인간들은 더 이상 보호막으로써의 건축 환경이 아닌 함께 상호작용 할 수 있는 감성반응 환경을 요구한다. 즉, 실내 공간은 사람들의 요구를 충족시키거나 사람들의 기분을 만족시키기 위해 건물이 마치 살아 있는 유기체처럼 쉬지 않고 변하는 공간이다. 그러나 건축공간의 물리적 특성의 한계에서 유동적인 감성반응 환경의 요구를 충족시키는 데에는 많은 한계점이 따른다. 그래서, 본 연구에서는 이러한 한계점을 극복하기 위해 디지털 환경을 이용한 가상공간에서 실행하였다. 이는 실제공간에서의 시행착오를 줄일 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 빠른 시간 내에 인간의 반응을 연구할 수 있다. 특히, 본 연구에서는 감성반응의 실내배색에 의해 실내공간에서의 디지털 벽면의 디자인을 가상공간에서 개발하여 거주자의 감성 반응을 평가하는 것을 연구 목적으로 두었다. 이와 같은 거주자의 감성반응형 환경 디자인은 미래의 디자인의 패러다임이 될 것이다.
