  • Korea's overseas construction industry has been rather depressed by the weakened profitability as well as the sharp decrease of the market shares due to the lack of international competitiveness and the declined international market. There exist a lot of various risks in performing the overseas construction, and especially EPC projects, which entail complicated process from different parts, also require a sophisticated procurement and management skill. Subsequently, to survive in the competitive international market, we need to establish strategies to select potentially profitable projects at the initial stage of bidding process and to mitigate the high degree of risk exposure through contract negotiation and its adjustment. This research discusses the trend of environment in international construction markets. Then, it identifies the key factors that affect the profitability significantly through the structured surveys from 59 actual overseas projects, and it analyzes the key factors by using statistical methods. This research provides the profitability evaluation bases, with which overseas construction participants can forecast and analyze the risk more systematically, by eliciting profit-influencing factors using the result of statistical analysis, literature review and structuring their cause-and-effect relationships. The profitability casual hierarchy structure describes the profitability factors' hierarchy in details and their interrelationships. It also enables us to find out critical factors directly related to profitability aggravation through a qualitative and quantitative analysis. Ultimately, with this hierarchy structure as the base, the research will suggest how to develop the quantitative profitability forecasting model.

  • Today, large enterprises are changing their team organization to group organization. These trends have brought work flexibility of project and manpower usage. However, communication among group members has become more complicated, and it has been found that ERP was not efficient enough to solve this communication problem. The main purpose of this study was to design a quick and systematic communication system for group project management, and Web-based Information Reporting System (hence forth WIRS) has been proposed. The main topics covered in this paper are design of functions and system architecture, process model design, database design, and implementation of the prototype. Focus group interview was conducted and user feedback was positive about main functions for WIRS and its overall impact on the enhancement of productivity.

  • Considering about construction projects characteristics, there Is an existing uncertainty which causes inaccuracy or invalidity under decision making situation. Therefore, cost risk analysis of numerous construction projects are Inclined to depend on expert's experiences and subjective judgements. In Korean domestic construction works, however, there is no reasonable method or process for applying subjective elements. Only probabilistic analysis using objective calculation are being used now. This research suggests a cost risk analysis method to analyze quantitatively Cost Impact by risk, and it appraises expert's subjective elements for the purpose of enhancing validity of cost estimation. Moreover, a new cost risk analysis method is introduced for providing convenient user interface in practical business.

  • The productivity management of highway construction is required to innovate the efficiency of investment The productivity management of highway construction is required to innovate the efficiency of investment cost for newly constructed projects and to improve the quality of these projects, as the maintenance and management expenses are steadily increasing for existing highways under operation. However, clear criteria, methods or requirements to measure the productivity and performance in the construction of highways have not been properly established yet. This study defined 5 major elements of the productive projects in terms of construction management which is one of major tasks of the owner. There were the 43 influential elements significantly affecting on the productivity and these elements were categorized into the hierarchical structure which was composed of 3 levels. Also, this study conducted a survey for Korea Expressway Corporation who is the largest owner in Korea's highway construction. As a result, major project performance indicators, which should be addressed for management, to execute the projects successfully, are presented through understanding the extent of the affection of productivity elements on the elements of project performance to attain the productive projects and through understanding the extent of demand to be improved.

  • Global construction market has grown rapidly since 2000. Even though developing countries grew into an economic, the most of oil-producing countries of continuous high oil prices due to an increase in plant construction orders is to present a lot of influence. According to the growth of global construction market, the domestic construction companies in the overseas market share have recorded 3% of the performance of the top 10 world records. However, current performance has analyzed the expansion of the market rather than competitiveness development of domestic construction companies. Therefore, to improve competitiveness in the global construction orders for the domestic construction companies in terms of long term, the government in Korea has ordered various research projects related to the plant since 2005. This paper presents not only global plant market trends and plant project in domestic but also introduction of completed research standardization recently.

  • As construction projects became larger and longer, the need for the construction technologies and innovative construction processes has been continuously increased in construction field. In response to this trend, construction industries tried to adopt the concurrent engineering which had been normally applied for manufacturing industries to develop the products with improved quality in a reduced time. However, the application of the concurrent engineering to construction field was limited due to the lack of advanced management system and incomplete theoretical backgrounds. In this regard, this study attempted to develop a checklist for the successful application of concurrent engineering to bridge projects. To this end, this study presents the checklist for the application of concurrent engineering to construction projects. Further, the checklist was modified and updated to reflect the specific feature of the bridge construction using expert interviews. With the help of additional 188 experts, a questionnaire-based survey was also conducted to validate the checklist. In addition, using importance-performance analysis(IPA), the study identified the factors needed for intensive improvement. Consequently, the proposed checklist is expected to be useful, because it improves the applicability of the concurrent engineering in that it enables managers to monitor construction progress and further to protect the project from potential risks.

  • Analyzing and finding the risk factors in information technology (IT) projects have been discussed because risk management is an important issue in IT project management. This study obtained the risk factor checklists with priorities, analyzed the causal relationship of risk factors, and determined their influences on IT project management. However, only few studies systematically classified IT project risk factors in terms of risk exposure. These studies considered both the probability of occurrence and the degree of risk simultaneously. The present study determined 53 IT project risk factors on the basis of literature and expert group discussions. Additionally, this study presented clustering analysis based on the data of 140 project managers. The IT project risk factor classification framework was divided into four areas (HIHF, HILF, LIHF, and LILF). The present results can be used to help IT project managers establish effective risk management strategies and reduce IT project failures. This study also provides academic implication because it considers both the probability of occurrence and the degree of influence of risk factors.

  • With construction projects continuously becoming more massive and complex, risk factors have been consistently increasing. To achieve a successful project, it is very important to identify and cope with such risk factors. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to suggest plans of reducing risk, not only for describing the drafting process for construction planning but also for systematically organizing constraints and risk factors in earth work, foundation work and reinforced concrete construction. To achieve these objectives, this study 1) analyzes previous theories about risk classification structure, 2) performs a case study of an actual project to embody the problems of safety management by analyzing the results of an interview with a construction engineer. In conclusion, the following factors were systematically organized: 1) characteristics of construction site (purpose, structure, floor, etc.); 2) the actual application conditions of the main construction methods; 3) the relationship between constraints and risk factors.
