  • As construction projects are getting more complex and larger in size, the amount of information is increased exponentially, which requires information management systems to accumulate as-built information throughout the project life-cycle. Particularly, a daily report system is very important, since it helps them keep track of various as-built information at the most detailed level. However, there have been many problems with daily reporting since its process is time-consuming and contains a lot of redundancies and ambiguities. Therefore, the objective of this research is to improve a process of collecting as-built information and managing daily report. To do so, this research developed a to-be process model and a daily report system. The daily report system developed in this research consists of interactive task generator and daily report management modules. The system has been successfully implemented in a real world construction project. The system development processes including process analysis, information models and system features are described along with discussions on the results and improvements.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the process to support and evaluate experts' decision making on vertical transportation planning in high-rise building constructions. Experts generally carry out the vertical transportation planning by heuristic methods, so there is a possibility that their decisions failed. The failure of the vertical transportation planning can be result in much loss of time and cost. The process presented in this paper evaluates experts' alternatives, organizes the results of the vertical transportation plan, and then leads to the systematic flow of materials and crews.

  • There are many participants in the construction industry compare to other industry, and its productivity is lower than other industry. Therefore this study has understood that BIM (Building Information Modeling) may contribute to the improvement in the productivity at construction sites, and I wish to suggest a BIM application process suitable for the construction industry, To achieve such goal, this study has examined the theory of BIM and has extracted the subjects to be improved through the analysis of the existing construction process, and has suggested the BIM application process to resolve issues of improvement. And to evaluate the application of the improved process, a case study was conducted with the application of commercialized BIM related software. The possibility of application of BIM model in the construction industry, and its influence and the subjects to be resolved, with the application of BIM in Korea, were able to be confirmed. I wish this study may contribute to the application of BIM in the Korean construction industry.

  • Construction industry becomes large and complicated as that occurred in the construction processes and operations, and the growing social demand for more systematic and efficient methods of integrated management increases. Current facility maintenance system has been regarded as large labor-intensive and fairly stagnant, and faced on several issues including inefficiency in cost and time to collect and utilize various field information. Thus, this paper presents a maintenance prototype utilizing NFC technology and smart devices to efficiently collect and manage the field information in the course of the construction processes. By choosing dam facilities as a case study, construction data for dam inspection and maintenance were classified according to dam maintenance guideline, and database structure was constructed to incorporate with the NFC tags and smart device interface. The system prototype presented in this paper would improve the quality of the dam facilities maintenance system and provide business convenience and usability by contributing increased efficiency of field information management and sharing.

  • There are many problems such as uncertainty of sequencing and irrational interdependence of processes in work breakdown structure of construction project. This study suggests work structuring for improving work reliability and transparency of processes to solve problems of work breakdown structure. Also, It proposes a process design diagram The goal of improving process design by work structuring is to make work flow more reliable and quick while delivering value to the customer. The process design diagram aims at achieving lean project objectives, such as, reduction in the share of non-value adding activities, increased transparency, process simplification and increased product flexibility.

  • Recently there has been huge efforts to improve performance in construction process by applying emerging techniques such as the Lean principle, Just-in-time concept and so on. However, little achievement as we expected has come out in reality due to the lack of strategy to set a definite goal of the execution and differences of personal viewpoints on construction productivity. Accordingly, it is the most important to promote the circumstances for the construction process improvement by quantifying the goals of respective unit activity groups. This research explores feasible solutions for the improvement of construction projects performance by combining the six-sigma principle for the generic administrative innovation based on the idea of construction process performance. For this purpose, mutual comparisons of various current approaches are performed in an attempt to establish the advantages in applying six-sigma idea and to provide its fundamental strategy. Furthermore, through a case study with the simulation of applying six-sigma to a unit activity group in construction process, this paper verifies that the overall performance improves as the degree of sigma level gets advanced.

  • Tracking ICT applications on construction business processes is critical to the success of ICT-applied construction projects. Existing IDEF0 is a representative modeling method for visualizing and analyzing business processes. It defines a construction production process into a visual information model, hence, encouraging the project participant to understand the activities, their deliverable, and control flow of the process. However, IDEF0 dose not lend itself to ICT-applied construction processes, because it does not provide a mean to define how, in what order, by which each and every activity that ICT applied implements. This paper presents a new business modeling method that improves the traceability of ICT application (IAMB: ICT Application tracking Model for Business process) for construction management. The IAMB contributes to handle the sophisticated features of construction management processes to which ICT are applied. The method categorizes the process into three types: management, construction, and information exchange. The validity of IAMB was confirmed by analyzing the performance when it is used for tracking each modeling step of lift reservation process which making use of ICT. The test case provides an admissible evidence that the method encourage to define who, what, how, which order, and by which ICT tools the construction process exchanges production information.

  • Practical and efficient application of lean construction, which has been proposed as an alternative to the limitations of traditional construction management methods, was developed to facilitate application on site and improve productivity through the fusion of traditional construction management methods. The concepts of Lean Time and Lean Cycle Time, which are the principles of lean construction, were introduced to eliminate waste and smooth flow production and pursuit of perfection, and the goal of establishing and improving the criteria for measurement and improvement was established and the information collection template was configured and applied to ensure reliability of measurement and analysis. Based on this, the project feasibility, reliability, and continuous improvement process were applied to the Field case to verify its effectiveness.

  • Domestic construction industry, which has recently had difficulty in market saturation and slowing growth, is trying to resolve this situation by incorporation with IT technology. However, there was less choice and has simply used IT technology as required in construction field. In other word, IT technology has applied to not all processes but some parts. Therefore, in this paper, we find out suitable and promising IT technology to each step of construction process, analyzing IT convergence technology related to whole process comprehensively in order to suggest fundamental directions for effective construction IT convergence in the field.
