Evaluation and Management of Frailty, and Its Association With Pain (노쇠의 평가와 관리, 그리고 통증과의 연관성)

  • Frailty is a clinical syndrome as an increased vulnerability to stressors, leading to a decrease in physiologic reserves and a decline in the ability to maintain a good homeostasis. This condition leads to an increased risk of hospitalization, disability and mortality. Frailty occurs due to various causes and requires a multidimensional approach. It is also important to detect and manage it early. Frailty is also deeply related to neuropsychiatric problems such as pain and depression. In evaluating frailty, it is desirable to comprehensively consider not only physical areas such as disease, nutrition, movement, and sensory functions, but also psychosocial areas, and representative scales include Fried's physical frailty phenotype and Rockwood's frailty index. Physical activity and appropriate protein intake are important for frailty management, and inappropriate drug use should be reduced and oral care, cognitive function, and falls should also be noted. Frailty and pain can affect each other, and pain can promote frailty. Evidence has been published that hormone and protein abnormalities, immune system activity and inflammatory response, and epigenetic mechanisms work in common in the field of frailty and pain. More extensive and high-quality research should be conducted in the future, and the quality of life will be improved if the results are applied to the suppression and treatment of old age and pain.

A study on the relationship between college students' self-differentiation and marriage outlook (대학생의 자아분화와 결혼관의 관계연구)

  • This study aims to develop policies and programs to improve self-differentiation that will have an impact on establishing a positive view of marriage among college students by examining and confirming the impact of college students' self-differentiation on their views on marriage among college students in early adulthood. This is an attempted research study. For this purpose, a self-report online survey was conducted and analyzed among 204 college students attending a university in northern Gyeonggi Province. The analysis method used SPSS 25.0 program to calculate internal consistency, frequency analysis to identify the general characteristics of the research subject, descriptive statistical analysis to determine the level of the research variable, and differences in research variables according to the characteristics of the research subject. To find out, an independent samples t-test, analysis of variance, and post hoc test were conducted, and analysis using SPSS Process Macro was conducted to verify the mediation effect. The results of the analysis showed a positive (+) correlation between self-differentiation and views on marriage, which suggests that self-differentiation has a significant impact on establishing a positive view on marriage, and for this purpose, it is necessary to establish a positive view on marriage among college students. To this end, we aimed to provide basic data to support education for healthy families through national policy.

  • The development of digital technology has given rise to a new service model: self-service. This model introduces the concept of "digital shadow work", in which consumers conduct unpaid behind-the-scenes digital tasks instead of employees. While consumers are engaging in increasingly more digital shadow work in self-service environments, they are unaware of their unpaid labor. This raises concerns about consumer rights and businesses' long-term sustainability and health. This study aims to reveal the psychological awareness factors that influence consumers' decisions to engage in digital shadow work in self-service environments. This exploratory qualitative study utilizes a grounded theory approach and semi-structured interviews to reveal the psychological awareness factors that contribute to consumers' decision to engage in digital shadow work. By revealing the psychological awareness of decision-making factors, this study enhances consumer's understanding and awareness of digital shadow work, which helps increase their awareness of self-protection in the context of self-service technologies. Additionally, understanding consumers' decision-making psychology is crucial for non-face-to-face self-service technology companies and provides a theoretical basis for sustainable and healthy business development.

Investigation of Contamination Levels of CI Toxins in Imported Shellfish Products Available in South Korea (국내 수입산 패류의 Cyclic Imine (CI) 독소에 대한 오염도 조사 분석)

  • The detection of high levels of cyclic imine (CI) toxins, noted for their neurotoxic effects, in imported shellfish products represents a significant public health concern for South Korea. In this study, we investigated the levels of CI contamination in these imported products. Specifically, we focused on spirolides (SPX-C), pinnatoxin (PnTX), and gymnodimine-A (gym-A), utilizing advanced LC/MS/MS analytical techniques. Samples collected from a range of imported shellfish revealed substantial contamination, with SPX-C being detected at 227.84 ppt in New Zealand mussels, PnTX-G at 80.42 ppt in Chilean mussels, and GYM-A at 118.79 ppt in New Zealand mussels. These findings are particularly alarming, given that the concentrations of CIs in shellfish from certain countries often exceed those found in South Korean products, posing a potentially significant risk to public health when these contaminated products are imported. On the basis of our findings, we advocate the urgent implementation of stringent regulatory measures to control and mitigate the health hazards associated with these toxins in shellfish products. Additionally, we emphasize the importance of ongoing monitoring and continuous research to gain a better understanding of these risks and to develop effective strategies for their management, which will thereby contribute to protecting consumer health in the context of increasing global seafood trade.

Analysis of E-Waste Disposal Trends in a Security Perspective (보안관점의 전자폐기물 처리동향 분석 연구)

  • The increased demand for electronic components, spurred by the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the COVID-19 pandemic, has facilitated human life but also escalated the production of e-waste. Discussions on the impact of e-waste have primarily revolved around environmental, health, and social issues, with global legislations focusing on addressing these concerns. However, e-waste poses unique security risks, such as potential technological and personal information leaks, unlike conventional waste. Current discourse on e-waste security is notably insufficient. This study aims to empirically analyze the relatively overlooked trends in e-waste security, employing three methodologies. Firstly, it assesses the general trend in discussions on e-waste by analyzing year-wise documents and media reports. Secondly, it identifies key trends in e-waste security by examining documents on the subject. Thirdly, the study reviews national security guidelines related to e-waste disposal to assess the necessity of designing security strategies for e-waste management. This research is significant as it is one of the first in korea to address e-waste from a security perspective and offers a multi-dimensional analysis of e-waste security trends. The findings are expected to enhance domestic awareness of e-waste and its security issues, providing an opportunity for proactive response to these security risks.

Effect of digital competence on scan time and scan error in intraoral scanning (디지털 역량이 구강스캐너의 스캔 시간 및 스캔 오차에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to test whether the digital competence of dental hygienists can affect their intraoral scanning potential in terms of scan time and error. Methods: Dental hygienists and dental hygiene students who had never used an intraoral scanner were surveyed to determine their digital competence. Individual data collected using an intraoral scanner was compared with reference data collected using a model scanner to identify scanning errors, and participants' scanning times were measured. Results: A significant decrease in scanning time was observed as the overall level of digital competence increased. The increase in digital skills and digital knowledge led to a decrease in scanning time by 3.73 and 3.98 minutes, respectively. Conclusions: This study found that digital competence was associated with reduced scan times, but less so with scan errors. This may be due to recent advances in scanning software, and future studies may need to develop a digital competence assessment tool that is more appropriate for the dental field.

A Study on the Classification of Vulnerable Areas to PM2.5 according to Urban Characteristics based on Vulnerability Assessment (취약성 평가에 기반한 PM2.5 취약지역 유형화에 관한 연구)

  • PM2.5, a type of fine particulate matter, poses serious health risks. Existing pollution management policies and research have generally focused on high-concentration areas. However, this approach has limitations as it does not adequately account for regional characteristics and varying levels of vulnerability, leading to an incomplete reflection of actual risks in specific areas. This study analyzed 229 administrative districts to develop a vulnerability index by comprehensively evaluating PM2.5 exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity. Using data from 2019, the index was calculated through normalization and entropy weighting methods, and spatial patterns of PM2.5 vulnerability were examined through LISA and K-means clustering analysis. The findings reveal that the distribution of PM2.5-vulnerable areas shows distinct patterns within urban settings, which were classified into four distinct types, each characterized by different urban features. This suggests a need for region-specific dust reduction policies. This study contributes to a better understanding of the spatial patterns of PM2.5 vulnerability and aims to support the development of more effective policy approaches.

Fabrication and Characterization of Lactate Oxidase-catalase-mitochondria Electrode (젖산 산화효소-카탈라아제-미토콘드리아 전극 제작 및 특성 분석)

  • The lactate electrode can be utilized either as an electrode for lactate sensor to monitor the patient's health status, stress level, and athlete's fatigue in real time or lactate fuel cell. In this study, we fabricated a high-performance electrode composed of lactate oxidase, catalase, and mitochondria, and investigated the surface analysis and electrochemical properties of this electrode. Carbon paper modified with single-walled carbon nanotubes (CP-SWCNT) had significantly improved electrical conductivity compared to before modification. The electrode to which lactate oxidase, catalase, and mitochondria were attached (CP-SWCNT-LOx-Cat-Mito) produced a higher current than the electrode to which lactate oxidase and catalase were attached. The amount of reduction current produced by the bilirubin oxidase (BOD)-attached electrode (CP-SWCNT-BOD) was greatly affected by the presence or absence of oxygen in the electrolyte. The fuel cell composed of CP-SWCNT-LOx-Cat-Mito (anode) and CP-SWCNT-BOD (cathode) produced maximum power (29 ㎼/cm2) at a discharge current density of 133 ㎂/cm2. From this study, we had proved that mitochondria is essential for improving lactate sensor and fuel cell performance.

Implant-assisted removable partial denture restoration in small number of residual teeth in mandible: A case report (하악 소수 잔존치 환자에서 임플란트 보조 국소의치 수복 증례)

  • The patient in this case presented with a desire to have new dentures due to discomfort with existing ones. At the initial visit, all of teeth were missing except for the mandibular left second molar. As the patient was 65 years old, treatment with dentures and implant-supported prostheses was possible under the national health insurance system, and the patient opted for the mandibular denture using implant. Temporary prostheses were initially provided for patient adaptation, and following successful adaptation period, the treatment progressed. A maxillary complete denture and a mandibular implant-supported denture using two implants in the canines were fabricated. The mandibular denture is a Kennedy Class II removable partial denture which consists of a six-unit porcelain fused to metal fixed dental prostheses supported by the implant in the canines on both sides and left second molar serving as the abutments. Despite severe bone resorption and insufficient abutment teeth, the patient expressed satisfaction with the treatment results. In cases with economic and anatomical constraints affecting the feasibility of complete denture, implant-supported overdenture, and implant-supported fixed dental prostheses, an implant-assisted removable partial denture using implant surveyed crowns proves to be a viable and effective alternative treatment option. Nevertheless, the current dearth of scientifically rigorous studies underscores the necessity for meticulous regular check-up and occlusal assessment.

  • This study purports to identify the factors that contribute to the classification of age groups or generations of Koreans. Independent variables such as respondents' attitudes toward welfare, attitudes toward equity, education level, perception of inequality in Korean society, tax awareness, and health status are included in the model that were put into the analysis with the main interest. Since this study does not construct any hypothesis prior to analysis, the nature of this study can be said exploratory. The data utilized for the analysis are from the 17th year of the Korean Welfare Panel collected in 2022, and a linear discrimination analysis technique will be used. First and foremost, a theoretical review of the generational classification will be conducted through domestic and international literature in the past. To date, there is no quantitative studies in Korea that have a significant influence on the generational classification. Therefore, in this study, a theoretical review of political tendencies and values, which are estimated to have a significant influence on the generational classification, that is, the difference between generations, will be significant. The perception and attitude toward welfare will be discussed in the review of values. Next, analysis models, analysis techniques, and variables to be used in the analysis will be introduced. After
