  • Objective: In Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do, Korea, we wanted to determine if the sluggish local economy could affect citizens' health behaviors, especially mental health. Methods: We divided Gunsan-si into 5 living areas and conducted Small-Area Estimations and confirmed the modified compound estimation value using the 2013-2017 Community Health Survey data and population data from Gunsan-si. Results: The health behaviors and mental health of the residents of the western living area(Soryong-dong, Misung-dong), which is an industrial hub of Gunsan, had deteriorated or decreased compared to those of other regions. Conclusions: Although there are limitations in analyzing the community health survey data using the small-area estimation method, it could be useful data for evaluating regional gaps and health level.

  • This study was conducted to study the effect of acculturation on the permanent resident and naturalized citizens' mental health status. The Survey Data of Foreign Residents in Korea 2012 was utilized. Independent variable was the acculturation level, measured by the duration of life spent in Korea and the level of Korean proficiency. The dependent variable was the mental health outcome. Initially, acculturation showed protective effect on mental health of immigrants. But after adjustment of control variables, the effect of acculturation disappeared. This result does not converge into the general trajectory of mental health status among immigrants regarding the level of acculturation. The experience of discrimination had outstanding negative effect, which suggests policy inception point.

As a result of the study, general characteristics (gender, age, education level, household income) and health-related characteristics (smoking, drinking, and physical activity) were adjusted according to the spouse status. As a result, compared to those without a spouse, the probability of diagnosis of arthritis (OR=0.673, p=.010) and the Possibility of experiencing depression (OR=0.535, p=003) lower. It was confirmed that the quality of life was significantly higher (B=0.023, p=.040). The results of this study can be used as basic data to determine the factors that influence the health status of the elderly by existence of spouses.

  • Health status and loneliness, respectively, are major factors influencing depression among older adults. Meanwhile, there is the possibility that health status indirectly affects depression via loneliness. With regard to this indirect effects, however, age-friendly environments can make differences by providing community resources which help to compensate weakness of declining physical function and limited social participation due to vulnerable health status. In this context, this study examined moderated mediation effects of age-friendly environments on the indirect path from subjective health status to depression through loneliness. 615 adults aged 50 years and over from nationally conducted '2017 age integration survey' are analyzed. As a result, the tendency that poor subjective health status indirectly increased depression with mediated by loneliness was aggravated in less age-friendly environments. Consequently, the efforts to improve environmental conditions of less age-friendly communities are required first for the purpose of preventing older adults' depression caused by poor health status and loneliness.

  • In order to investigate the factors influencing QOL and life satisfaction of the physically disabled, the author interviewed, by using structuralized questionnaire, 440 individuals among the physically disabled who were participated in Health Examination from April to July, 1997. The questionnaire consisted of the general characteristics(sex, age, marital status, family number, etc), the Reintegration to Normal Living Index(RNLI) to assess QOL, and the single item of five-likert scale to evaluate life satifaction. The means of RNLI were $16.2{\pm}4.8$ in total score, $12.2{\pm}3.4$ in daily functioning and $4.0{\pm}2.1$ in perception of self. The respondents were less reintegrated toward social activities and relationships than impairments or disabilities. While the satisfied group was 47.3%, the dissatisfied group was 52.7%. As the results of multiple regression and logistic regression analysis, the significant predictors of QOL were age, education, job, grade of disability and subjective health status. The life satisfaction were related to economic status, job and subjective health status. To improve QOL and life satisfaction of the physically disabled, it is important that we improve their basic socioeconomic status by getting a job through rehabilitation education and induce them to have positive self-assessment by extending the opportunity of social participation.
