In Korea, common and Tartary buckwheat are cultivated mainly in spring and fall, however the available buckwheat varieties are still very limited. In this study, we have evaluated buckwheat germplasm for agronomic traits and compared flavonoids contents in different cultivation period and collection area. In common buckwheat, the number of days from sowing to flowering was 40 and 31 days and from sowing to maturity took 90 and 69 days in spring and fall cultivation, respectively. The number of nodes and branches were higher in spring cultivation while the hundred seed weight was higher in fall cultivation. The average flavonoids contents in common buckwheat were 0.20 mg/g dry weight (DW) and 0.40 mg/g DW in spring and fall cultivation, respectively. The highest flavonoids content was detected in Jeonnam accessions with 0.29 mg/g DW and 0.43 mg/g DW during spring and fall cultivation, respectively. The flavonoids contents were varied from 1.5 to 2.5 times according to the collection area. These results suggest that the agronomic traits and flavonoids contents were vary depending on the cultivation environment and germplasm collection area. Therefore, it is necessary to select the material by considering the characteristics of the germplasm for breeding of new varieties.
This study was conducted to find out how the germination, phenology and leaf morphology of Phytolacca insularis(endemic species of Korea) and P. americana(alien species) react to the global warming situation. Seed and seedlings of two species were sampled and placed under two separate conditions for the experiment. One of the seed and seedlings was treated in the glass house with control(ambient $CO_2$+ambient temperature, (AC-AT), and the other with control(elevated $CO_2$+ elevated temperature, EC-ET), over the period of one year, 2008-2009. The germination rate of two species was fast, and the time of their germination started early, when they were treated at EC-ET than at AC-AT. Furthermore, the germination rate of Phytolacca insularis(endemic species of Korea) was found to be comparatively lower than that of P. americana(alien species). The former showed only vegetative growth whereas the latter showed both vegetative growth and reproductive growth in one year period. The more $CO_2$ degree and temperature increased, phenological responses of two species, including leaf growth, the formation of flower stems, flowering, and fruit maturing, became much faster, and the time of their leaf-yellowing was delayed. The lamina length of P. insularis was not significantly affected by elevated $CO_2$ and temperature. The lamina length of P. americana, on the other hand, became longer at EC-ET than at AC-AT, but the leaf width of both species increased at EC-ET. As for the number of leaves, both species showed no difference. Finally, the ratio of the leaf area of P. insularis was high at AC-AT, but P. americana was high at EC-ET. These results indicate that P. americana, aliens species, reacts more sensitively to global warming than P. insularis, endemic species, does.

Characteristics of ten glutinous maize hybrids developed at the Genetics and Breeding Lab. of Department of Agronomy, College of Agriculture, Chungnam National University were compared. Inbred lines used in the development of the ten hybrids were all originated from the Korean local maize lines which were collected in 1980s and they were developed by ear-to-row method. All the inbreds used had very unique plant characteristics such as plant height, ear height, ear length, ear diameter, 100 kernel weight and kernel color. The highest inbred in plant height was Jewon and the Jewon was also highest in ear height. While the ear of Jewon inbred was slender and slimmy, the ear of Dangjin inbred was rather short and promp. 100 kernel weight of the Bosung inbred was highest and the kernel weight of Chilbo was lightest. Kernel color of Jewon, Bosung and Danyang was white and the kernel color of Yunghee and Chilbo was purple. Dangjin had yellow kernel color. A total of 11 hybrids including one check hybrid developed by the Crop Experiment Station, ADR were included in performance trial. The hybrids which showed high grain yield were Dangjin/Bosung, Sosung/Dangjin and Dangjin/Chilbo. These hybrids were about 10% higher than the check in yield capacity. Each hybrid had also unique characteristics such as plant height, ear height and flowering date.
This study was conducted in three years (7-9 years after planting) to investigate vegetative growth, yield, fruit quality, and return bloom for optimum crop load based on different planting densities of adult 'Fuji'/M.9 apple trees. As plant materials, 'Fuji'/M.9 apple trees planted at $3.5{\times}1.5m$ (190 trees per 10 a), $3.5{\times}1.2m$ (238 trees per 10 a), and $3.2{\times}1.2m$ (260 trees per 10 a) spacing and trained as slender spindles were used. The crop load was assigned to five different object ranges as follows: 55-64, 65-74, 75-84, 85-94, and 95-104 fruit per tree. TCA increment, total shoot growth, return bloom, yield per tree, and yield efficiency tended to increase as planting density decreased, and fruit weight and soluble solid content tended to increase as the object range of crop load decreased. Fruit red color tended to increase as shoot growth decreased. For apple trees planted with 238 trees and 260 trees per 10a, biennial bearing occurred when the crop load was over 85-94 and 75-84 fruits, respectively. However, biennial bearing did not occur when the crop load was 95-104 fruits in apple trees planted with 190 trees per 10a. Accumulated yield tended to increase as planting density and crop load increased, but that of biennial bearing did not show such a difference. Based on our results, optimum crop load recommendations are to set 95-104 fruits per tree in 'Fuji'/M.9 mature apple trees planted at 190 trees per 10a, 75-84 fruits per tree at 238 trees per 10a, and 65-74 fruits per tree at 260 trees per 10a.
To investigate the characteristics of plant growth and flower quality of gerbera 'Sunny Lemon' by amount of nutrient solution, young seedling plants, 'Sunny Lemon' were transplanted to rock-wool and medium of peat moss and perlite mixed with 1 to 2 and they were acclimatized in greenhouse during about 1 month. Nutrient solution supplied to the plants is sonneveld solution of 1/2 concentration and treatments launched June 24, 2010 when average plant height was $20{\pm}1cm$. Nutrient contents as a standard for starting point of irrigation by time domain reflectometry (TDR) were determined with 60-65%, 70-75%, and 80-85%. Results of growth during vegetative growth, plant height, leaf width and leaf number increased by 10% in rockwool, but they were not significantly different. As for plant growth depending on nutrient content, 80-85% treatment showed the highest values. Leaf number increased by 60%, and leaf width and plant height had a about 40% increase than initial growth. Effectiveness for flower quality, yield and days to flowering were superior when nutrient content of media was higher than in the others. Especially, average days to flowering in 80-85% content was advanced by 7-10 days compared to the day in 60-65% treatment. The total amount of nutrient supply per plant was higher in mixed medium than in rockwool, but change patterns of EC and pH were enhanced in rockwool. Based on our results, we recommended that growth, cut flower, and yield of gerbera 'Sunny Lemon' were more effective when nutrient content of mixed medium was maintained at 80-85%.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of potassium and sulfur power levels on the growth, nutrients' uptake at different growing stage and seed yield of peanut plant and changes of soil chamical properties in a sandy peanut cultivated soil of Nak-dong riverside in 1984. 1. The length of main stem, that of branch NO. and NO. of branches per plant were increased by the increased application of potassium and sulfur powdar. Especially sulfur powder treated plot were shown in positive effect with obtained in main root length, NO. of roots and Wt. of noudles formed per plant, roots' weight of peanut plant was much more than top's Wt. at harvesting stage, and so ratio of dry matter Wt. top/root was low. 2. The noudle's Wt. formed was positively significant recognized with dry matter Wt. of peanut plant at harvesting stage and the treatments of potassium were increased 7-20% compared with potassium non-treated plot and sulfur's treatments were increased 4-13% than that of potassium 15kg/10a treatment which was sulfur's non-treated plot in seed yield. 3. Relationship between all nutrients' uptake at flowering stage and seed yield were positively significant recognized, but $P_2O_5$ uptake and N/S ratio showed negative effect at harvesting stage of peanut plant. 4. By the increase of potassium and sulfur powder application, the soil pH at two different stages were almost not differential and the content of K, $P_2O$ and $SO_4$ in soil and $SO_4/P_2O_5$ ratio were increasing tendency.

Recycling of drained nutrient solution in hydroponic cultivation of horticultural crops is important in the conservation of the water resources, reduction of production costs and prevention of environmental contamination. Objective of this research was to obtain the fundamental data for the development of a recirculation system of hydroponic solution in semi-forcing cultivation of 'Bonus' tomato. To achieve the objective, tomato plants were cultivated for 110 days and the contents of inorganic elements in plant, supplied and drained nutrient solution were analyzed when crop growth were in the flowering stage of 2nd to 8th fruiting nodes. The T-N content of the plants based on above-ground tissue were 4.1% at the flowering stage of 2nd fruiting nodes (just after transplanting), and gradually get lowered to 3.9% at the flowering stage of 8th fruiting nodes. The tissue P contents were also high in very early stage of growth and development and were maintained to similar contents in the flowering stage of 3rd to 7th fruiting nodes, but were lowed in 8th node stages. The tissue Ca, Mg and Na contents in early growth stages were lower than late growth stages and the contents showed tendencies to rise as plants grew. The concentration differences of supplied nutrient solution and drained solution in $NO_3-N$, P, K, Ca, and Mg were not significant until 5 weeks after transplanting, but the concentration of those elements in drained solution rose gradually and maintained higher than those in supplied solution. The concentrations of B, Fe, and Na in drained solution were slightly higher in the early stages of growth and development and were significantly higher in the mid to late stages of growth than those in supplied solution. The above results would be used as a fundamental data for the correction in the inorganic element concentrations of drained solution for semi-forcing hydroponic cultivation of tomato.
In this study, we analyzed the growth characteristics and isoflavone content of 43 soybean varieties highly adaptable to highland areas. The flowering period of each cultivation zone was from July 15 to August 12 at Daewallyeong, from July 18 to August 11 at Jinbu, and from July 23 to August 13 at Gangneung. The accumulated temperature from flowering to maturity was $1,297^{\circ}C$ for Daegwallyeong, $1,391^{\circ}C$ for Jinbu, and $1,685^{\circ}C$ for Gangneung. Forty-three varieties were classified into four utilities; soy sauce and tofu, bean sprouts, cooking with rice, and vegetable and early maturity. The content of isoflavone was highest at $2,579{\mu}g/g$ in varieties for soy sauce and tofu usage. Five varieties ("Paldalkong," "Sinpaldal2," "Ilmikong," "Sinpaldalkong," and "Daepung") cultivated in Daegwallyeong had over $4,000{\mu}g/g$ of isoflavone. The isoflavone content of the region Daegwallyeong was different at the significance level of 0.1 (p=0.061) compared to Gangneung. There was no significant difference between Gangneung and Jinbu. It is thought that the low temperature of the maturation stage during the growing period affected isoflavone accumulation. The varieties with more than $3,000{\mu}g/g$ of isoflavone content in Daegwallyeong, Jindu, and Gangneung were "L29," "Williams82," "Ilmikong," and "Daepung." These were genetically and environmentally stable in isoflavone content. It is expected that this study will be used as basic data for the functional breeding and selection of soybean varieties highly adaptable to a specific region, and to help expand soybean cultivation areas in highlands.
The genetic relationships between 4 Korean native Taraxacum and 2 naturalized Taraxacum species were analyzed using the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) method. Because 141 polymorphic bands were generated from 30 random primers selected through the primer screening, it was possible to analyze the genetic relationship among 6 Taraxacum species. In RAED with the primer OPC12, OPD16, OPK16, OPK17, OPK20, OPS1 or OPS8, many specific polymorphic bands have been appeared in each species. Especially RAPD with the primer OPS8, a specific polymorphic band at 564bp was appeared only in the naturalized Taraxacum officinale. Based on RAPD analysis, Korean native Taraxacum and naturalized Taraxacum species are divided into two groups. T. officinale and T. laevigatum are classified into group I which is a naturalized Taraxacum species group, and T. mongolicum, T. hallasanensis, T. ohwianum and T. coreanum are classified into group II which is a Korean native Taraxacum species group. The result from the RAPD method was very similar to the result from the Bootstrap method. From the examination of the physical characteristics of 6 Taraxacum species populated in Korea, flowering period of Taraxacum species in group I are longer than Taraxacum species in group ll, and the direction of involucral bract of Taruxacum species in the group I was also different comparing to the group ll. Because the flowering color, leaf direction, and the specificity of seed germination of T. coreanum were different compared to the other species in the group II, T. coreanum would be genetically divergent and showed the highest dissimilarity index score.
Climate change is recognised as the best serious environmental problem in recent time, and high alpine or high latitudinal organisms especially endangered by its change. Leontice microrhyncha is recorded one of the endangered species by the Ministry of Environment Korea. We surveyed ten L. microrhyncha populations distributed at Taebaek Mountains, high mountain area in Kangwon province. L. microrhyncha is distributed 940m~1350m high altitude which equivalent of Warmth Index $53^{\circ}C{\cdot}month$ to $75^{\circ}C{\cdot}month$, the range of conspicuous cool temperate forest zone. The plant species distributed at slope of $5^{\circ}{\sim}23^{\circ}$ on northeast slopes. The vegetation structure at tree layer of L. microrhyncha distribution area is dominated by Quercus mongolica, Betula costata, Cornus controversa, Acer mono in tree layer, and by Staphylea bumalda, Deutzia glabrata, Stephanandra incisa in shrub layer. The species diversity of herb layer of each L. microrhyncha population showed from 0.21 to 0.98, and the importance value of L. microrhyncha in each population was the highest at blooming time of L. microrhyncha. These results will provide the basic information for the development of conservation strategies for this endangered species.
