Genus Prorocentrum of dinoflagellate has been known as representative causative algae of red tide in Masan-Jinhae Bay. Prorocentrum populations- P. dentatum Stein, p. micans Ehrenberg, P. minimum (Pavillard) Schiller and P. triestinum Schiller- were monitored from January 1990 to August 1997, Prorocentrum populations usually have bloomed during the water stratification periods from June to August. Water temperature ranged from 24$^{\circ}C$ to 28$^{\circ}C$ and salinity from 24$\textperthousand$ to 34$\textperthousand$ during the Prorocentrum blooms. Bloom magnitude of Prorooentrum populations gradually increased from offshore to inshore area of coastal embayment and this populations tended to concentrate from surface to 2.5m depth. Prorocentrum algal blooms have become more frequent and intense than those of 1980s and early 1990s. P. minimum was the most persistent species in terms of bloom frequency and cellular abundance.
Genetic variation of Ilex cornuta Lindley et Paxton was examined by sequence analyses of ITS for 65 individuals from Korea and China. The length of ITS 1 ranged from 253 to 259 bp. The 5.8S was 159 bp and ITS2 was observed to be 231 bp. A total of 8 different ITS types (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism haplotypes), which showed the difference of 1 - 6 bp, were detected from 65 individuals. The sequence polymorphisms of ITS appeared at 9 different sites. All of four individuals collected at Daejeong-eup in Jeju-do exhibited different types, but all individuals from Naju-si and Muan-gun in Jeollanam-do were identical. The variation of ITS was higher in Jeju-do population than in inland population. Since I. cornuta contains various types of ITS sequences, ITS analyses will provide important information on genetic diversity and conservation of this species.

Six populations of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella, were collected from the different national areas for resistance and reared in laboratory for two sensitive population. These populations of P. xylostella were examined the developed resistance against commercial products of Bacillus thuringiensis. There were 3 products with B. thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki including Tyuneup$^{(R)}$, Thuricide$^{(R)}$ and Geumulmang$^{(R)}$ and 2 products with B. thuringiensis subsp. aizawai including Tobagi$^{(R)}$ and Scorpion$^{(R)}$. The sensitive population of diamondback moths were provided from National Academy of Agricultural Science (NP) and Highland Agriculture Research Center (GR population) and field populations were caught from 6 different national areas. Resistance against Tyuneup$^{(R)}$ was developed 4.8 and 2.5 times in SP and HS compared with GR population of diamondback moth, respectively. In case of Geumulmang$^{(R)}$, it was developed 9.9 and 6.8 times in SP and NM population compared with NP population, respectively. Otherwise, Tobagi$^{(R)}$ was showed higher resistance in HS than any other population compared with GR population, however, Scorpion$^{(R)}$ that is a same strain with Tobagi$^{(R)}$, was showed only double resistance to SP population. It was supposed that the development of resistance to B. thuringiensis might be caused by the continuous application of the specific commercial product at the specific area. So, we need to use the commercial products of B. thuringiensis in rotation with different B. thuringiensis strains. In the other hand, when HS population with highest resistance were reared in laboratory, their resistance ratio was rapidly dropped to 1.1 times at second generation. We have to examined the resistance mechanism of the diamondback moth to B. thuringiensis strains.
This study was carried out to investigate vegetation structure and soil properties of Tilingia tsusimensis population found to be distributed in Mt. Gaya and Mt. Keumo. The Tilingia tsusimensis population was classified as Tilingia tsusimensis-typical dominant population and Tilingia tsusimensis-Thalictrum uchiyamai dominant population. It was found out that the organic matter content in the distributed areas for Tilingia tsusiensis population was $25.0{\sim}32.3%$; content of nitrate nitrogen was $0.83{\sim}1.04%;\;5.58{\sim}20.76\;ppm$ for available phosphorous; $46.3{\sim}62.9$ for CEC, and 4.5 to 5.1 for soil pH. The results of the correlation between Tilingia tsusimensis population and environmental factor are as follows; the Tilingia tsusimensis-typical dominant population was found in the areas of low elevation and had somewhat high interchangeable Na, Ca, Mg and CEC among nutrients; on the other hand, Tilingia tsusimensis-Thalictrum uchiyamai-dominant population was found in the areas of somewhat higher elevation and had a little lower interchangeable Na, Ca, Mg and CEC among nutrients than those of the Tilingia tsusimensis-typical dominant population.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the species composition and the aquatic environment of Jojong Stream and Sudong Stream, which were the original habitats of Zacco koreanus population and restored population re-introduced in Bongseonsa Stream. It also compared and analyzed the states of the growth and reproductive ability of Z. koreanus habiting in each of the three streams. The investigation was conducted in June 2016 which was known as the spawning season of Z. koreanus. The results of the physical aquatic environments showed the slight differences in altitude, width and depth of water among three streams, but the bottom structure was found to be quite different in the composition of the boulder, cobble, and pebble among the streams. The result of the physicochemical aquatic environment analysis showed that there were no significant differences in water temperature, pH, DO, BOD, and EC among the three stream. In the fish fauna investigation, 530 individuals of 11 species of 3 families were collected in Bongseonsa Stream, 293 individuals of 12 species of 4 families were collected in Jojong Stream, and 361 individuals of 11 species of 4 families were collected in Sudong Stream. All three streams were dominated by Z. koreanus and Z. platypus. Six Korean endemic species appeared in each of the three streams, showing the high occurrence rate of indigenous species of 50.0% or more. The aggregation index analysis revealed that the mean dominance index ranged from 0.63 (${\pm}0.05$, BS) to 0.72(${\pm}0.01$, JJ), mean diversity index from 1.55 (${\pm}0.06$, JJ) to 1.78 (${\pm}0.11$, BS), mean evenness index from 0.71 (${\pm}0.03$, JJ) to 0.76 (${\pm}0.02$, BS), and mean richness index from 1.61 (${\pm}0.33$, JJ) to 1.73 (${\pm}0.24$, SD). The result indicated that the observed differences between the stream community indices were statistically nonsignificant. The similarity analysis showed that 75.4% similarity was divided into two groups of A and B and that the fish fauna on each analyzed point was similar. The quantitative habitat evaluation index (QHEI) analysis showed that the average value of QHEI was 151.0 (${\pm}46.0$), which means that it was a suboptimal habitat environment. The result of length-weight analysis of Z. koreanus populations showed that the regression coefficient b of the restoration population and the original habitat population were at 3.0 or higher while the condition factor had a positive slope. Moreover, it was found that the slopes of the regression coefficient b and condition factor of the original habitat population were larger than the restored population. The analysis of the length frequency distribution of the Z. koreanus population revealed that all three streams maintained the stable life cycle although it was found that the growth rate of the original habitat population was faster than the restored population in the one-year-old class. The result of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) analysis showed that the GSI median value of the Z. koreanus population in the restored habitat Bongseonsa Stream was higher than the population in the original habitat Jojong Stream and Sudong Stream for both of males and females.

We conducted a phylogeographic analysis of Korean endemic Zacco koreanus populations inhabiting the East-flowing river (Gangneung Yeongokcheon; GY, Yangyang Namdaecheon; YN), the Han River (Seomgang; SG, Soksacheon; SS), and the Nakdong River(Gilancheon; GA) using the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene (619 bp). Population genetic analysis was further performed to assess the population connectivity for the GY river where there is a large number of human-made artificial weirs with several fishways. The phylogeographic analysis revealed that while the populations of the East-flowing river and those of the Han River formed a monophyletic lineage, the Nakdong River individuals represented a distinct lineage with 3.7-4.2% (mean=4.0%) genetic distance from the other lineages. The population genetic analysis of the GY showed that a mid-stream population harbored relatively higher mitochondrial diversity relative to up- and down-stream populations, and there was no genetic differentiation between these three populations. The latter findings might suggest high genetic connectivity between the populations via genetic flow along the fishways. However, an analysis using faster-evolving genetic markers, such as microsatellites, is needed to confirm the findings of high population connectivity. Our study suggests the possibility of the presence of cryptic species in Z. koreanus in the Nakdong River basin. However, further study with more individual samples as well as additional markers or even more advanced genomic tools is required to test our hypothesis. Ecological or phenotypic analyses should be conducted to test whether the observed Nakdong River lineage represents a different or cryptic species, or simply hidden, but excessive, intraspecific diversity.

Aged sewage sludge with food waste leachate sludge or paper mill sludge was fed to earthworm (Eisenia fetida) populations and the effect of it on feeding and growth rate of earthworm population was investigated. Feeding rate of earthworm population on sewage sludge aged with food waste leachate sludge for 30 days was higher than that aged for 10 and 20 days. At 90 days after feeding, the density of earthworm population decreased regardless of aging period. And earthworm population growth to next generation was blocked by sewage sludge. The feeding rate and the density of earthworm population aged with paper mill sludge for 20 days were higher than that on sewage sludges aged for 10 and 30 days. Until 90 days after feeding, the density of earthworm population increased regardless of aging period of sewage sludge, however, since then decreased. There were comparatively higher feeding rate and growth rate of earthworm population on the sewage sludge which had been mixed with paper mill sludge and aged for 20 days, which rendered the probable pretreating method for vermicomposting sewage sludge.
We collected fishes at the 12,873 sites in stream order (1~7) from 2008 to 2016. In the results, two populations(Zacco platypus and Zacco koreanus) represented distributional differences in the stream order gradient, and correlation analysis showed that the two populations had a potential competitive relationship. The ecological characteristics of the fish except for the Z. platypus and the Z. koreanus, according to the gradient of stream order showed a pronounced gradient in the species such as intermediate species, sensitive species, carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. The two populations showed a high correlation between intermediate species, sensitive species of the tolerance guild and omnivores, insectivores of the trophic guild. Fish assessment index (FAI) was negative relation with stream order. According to the stream order gradient, the two populations showed different correlations with FAI.

Phylogenetic relationships and DNA polymorphism among local populations of the Korean native catfish species, Liobagrus mediadiposalis, have been investigated based on mitochondrial cytochrome b DNA sequences. As a result, three genetically distinct groups of local populations were recognized based on the phylogenetic tree constructed. The first group was called "Nakdong-river group" that included the local populations from Geumho-river, Gyeongho-river, and Deokcheon-river; the second one was "Geum-river group"; the third one was represented as "Seomjin-river group" that included the samples from Seomjin-river, Dongjin-river and Geokum-do. The phylogeny also implied that the ancestral group of L. mediadiposalis have first evolved to Nakdong-river group, and later two local populations (Geum-river and Seomjinriver group) were diverged from the other lineage. DNA polymorphisms we observed were 4.4~4.7% between Geum-river group and Seomjin-river group, 5.1~5.5% between Seomjinriver group and Nakdong-river group, and 5.5~5.7% between Nakdong-river group and Geumriver group. These results indicated the long period of geographic isolation due to the river system in Korea caused such high degrees of DNA polymorphisms between local populations of L. mediadiposalis.
To determine the population regulation mechanism of the Green rice leafhopper (Nephotettix cincticeps Uhler), the responses of the population increase to initial densities and the effect of host conditions and temperatures during developmental period were investigated. In the out door experiment, the increasing ratio of population density of this pest was reduced as initial density increased and this density-dependent effect was differ in accordance with host condition. Host conditioning through feeding resulted in reduction in numbers of eggs produced and it seemed to be affected by some inhibiting materials secreted by the pest during feeding. though the direct effect of feeding can't be excluded. The population growth was related with population density and host stage. Thus in late planted units, the host stage was favourable to the growth of population at low initial insect density but unfavourable at relatively high initial insect density and in early planted units, vice versa. The temperature during developmental stages definitely affected the determination of sex ratio of adult population and reduced numbers of eggs produced. The most favourable temperature to the population increase was $290^{\circ}C$, and at high temperature, $33^{\circ}C$, severe reduction of fecundity was shown ana it seemed to be caused by the simple reduction in numbers of eggs produced.
