Thirteen sesquiterpene lactones isolated from the flower of Chrysanthemum coronarium L., which has been widely cultivated in Korea as a vegetable for a long time, were investigated their antimicrobial activities against eight bacteria and five phytopathogenic fungi. The antimicrobial activities of dihydrochrysanolide (6) and 1-epi-dihydrochrysanolide (7) showed strong activities against all the bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Especially, Staphylococcus aureus was investigated that have very strong antibacterial activity to $1.56\;{\mu}g{\cdot}disc^{-1}$, respectively. Also, most of sesquiterpene lactones, which have ${\alpha}-methylene-{\gamma}-butyrolactone$ group, were exhibited strong activity to Gram(+) bacteria than Gram(-) bacteria. In the antifungal test, Rhizoctonia solani and Phytophthora capsici known as phytopathogenic fungi have exhibited all extensive activity about compounds that have ${\alpha}-methylene-{\gamma}-butyrolactone$ group.
This study was carried out to obtain basic data for selecting the applicable crops in reclaimed land and to provide guidelines for the rotation between paddy and upland cropping. Field experiment was conducted with six summer crops(garland chrysanthemum, young radish, small radish, kale, lettuce, red lettuce) at Dae-Ho reclaimed experiment plots in Dangjin province. Dry weights and plant heights of harvested crops were measured and soil chemical properties were analyzed. Plant height and dry weight decreased significantly with increasing soil saturation paste extract electrical conductivity(ECe) and sodium adsorption ratio(SAR). The threshold ECe of salt inhibition for six crops was less than $1dS\;m^{-1}$ for young radish and kale, greater than $4dS\;m^{-1}$ for garland chrysanthemum, and greater than $6dS\;m^{-1}$ for small radish, lettuce, and red lettuce. At higher ECe that inhibits crop growth, with every increase in $1dS\;m^{-1}$, dry weight index decreased by 3.35 for kale, 3.92 for small radish, 3.98 for young radish, 4.66 for lettuce, 7.57 for garland chrysanthemum, and 8.45% for red lettuce, respectively. The ECe causing 50% reduction of dry weight index was $18.9dS\;m^{-1}$ for small radish, $17.3dS\;m^{-1}$ for lettuce, $15.4dS\;m^{-1}$ for kale, $12.0dS\;m^{-1}$ for red lettuce, $11.3dS\;m^{-1}$ for young radish, and $11.0dS\;m^{-1}$ for garland chrysanthemum. Among the tested 6 summer crops through field experiment and in-situ survey, kale was proved to be a favorable vegetable crop at reclaimed tidal land.
The weed flora in the mulberry fields were investigated in Suwon, Jeonju, and Buan in May, July, and September of 2014. The objectives of this study were to use the survey data for establishing weed control methods and to bring awareness of possible problematic weeds in the Korean mulberry fields. The survey was conducted in 53 regions, covering approximately $145,925m^2$. Altogether 153 weed species of 37 families were identified, of which 68 were annual, 39 species were biennial and 46 were perennial. The dominance was the highest with Digitaria ciliaris followed by Erigeron annuus, Chenopodium album, Echinochloa crus-galli var.crus-galli, Acalypha australis, Commelina communis etc. Exotic weeds presented 44 species with 28.8% of a total presence, of which Erigeron annuus was the highest, followed by Chenopodium album, Phytolacca americana, Conyza canadensis, Oxalis corymbosa etc. Especially, we should aware Senecio vulgaris, not controlled with glufosinate ammonium SL in the Korean mulberry fields because it was known as atrazine resistance in US, Canada, Germany etc. In the PCA plot, weeds presented in the mulberry fields were divided into two groups, Eclipta prostrata community and Stellaria aquatic community and weed flora of Suwon and Buan were different due to those only presented in Suwon.
This study was conducted to monitor the current status of pesticide residues and to calculate the correlation between monthly price fluctuation and distribution of pesticide residues in leafy vegetables at the whole market in Gyeonggi-do from 2009 to 2013. From the result, the maximum residue limit (MRL) were frequently exceeded in 5 leafy vegetables which were 48 cases of crown daisy (5.8%), 28 cases of chard (5.1%), 28 cases of spinach (3.4%), 25 cases of perilla leaves (3.4%) and 24 cases of chamnamul (3.7%). The high rate of monthly pesticide residues exceeding MRL showed on crown daisy and chard observed in June and September, spinach in October to November and December to January, perilla leaves in July to August and January, and chamnamul in August to September. To calculate the correlation between monthly price fluctuation and distribution of pesticide residues, we performed the Pearson's correlation analysis. From the results, there were significant differences between monthly price and pesticide residues detected in chamnamul, spinach and perilla leaves (p < 0.05). There were also significant differences between monthly price and pesticide residues exceeding MRL in chamnamul and crown daisy (p < 0.05). Although the small number of leafy vegetables and short period were analyzed in this study, the consolidation monitor of pesticide residues according to the season and price will be needed to acquire the safety of agricultural products.
This survey was done to investigate the pesticide residues on agricultural products on the markets in Incheon area from 2003 to 2005. A total of 10,431 samples was analyzed the residues by GC. The violation rates of the samples over maximum residue limits (MRLs) of pesticide residues established by Korean Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) in the survey of 2003, 2004 and 2005 were 1.3%, 0.9%, and 1.2%, respectively. The rate from the samples of 2005 surveyed in general wholesale markets was 3.1%, whereas that from agricultural wholesale market was 0.93%. Of the total violated samples, more than 70% of the rates were recorded from the samples of Gyeonggi-do and Incheon area in 2003 and 2004. However, the rates from Gyeonggi-do and Incheon in 2005 were remarkably reduced to 25.6% and 23.3%, respectively. Most commonly encountered agricultural commodity over MRLs was crown daisy. Positively detected pesticides were 12, 17 and 32 in the survey of 2003, 2004 and 2005, respectively. The pesticides detected yearly over MRLs during three years were chlorothalonil, chlorpyrifos, diazinon, endosulfan, procymidone. Decreasing tendency in detected and violated rates of the residues was observed in chlorpyrifos and diazinon, while increasing tendency in detected rates was recorded in chlorothalonil, endosulfan, procymidone.
The influence of planting time and age of reclaimed fields on the contents of heavy metals in vegetable crops in suburban areas was investigated. Investigated crops were 4 radish cultivars, Chinese cabbage, spinach, Garland chrisanthemum, and Welsh onion. Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn were analyzed. The results obtained were as follows. 1) For radishes except Altari-mu and Welsh onion, the highest concentrations of heavy metals were recorded in roots whereas, for Chinese cabbage and Garland chrisanthemum, the highest concentration was appeared in leaves. 2) For lettuce, radishes, and spinach, the lowest concentrations of heavy metals were recorded in winter and the concentrations were the same between spring and autumn. 3) In lettuce difference of concentrations of heavy metals were not appeared between field age after reclamation with sewege sludge. 4) The concentrations of heavy metals observed was not harmful to human health.
The somatic chromosome numbers of the Korean species of Senecio L. and two related genera are investigated here. Three different chromosome numbers were found: 2n = 40 in Senecio argunensis Turcz., S. nemorensis L., S. vulgaris L., Tephroseris flammea (DC.) Holub and 2n = 44 in T. phaeantha (Nakai) C. Jeffrey & Y.L. Chen. and 2n = 48 in Sinosenecio koreanus (Kom.) B. Nord., T. kirilowii (Turcz. ex DC.) Holub and T. pierotii (Miq.) Holub. The chromosome numbers of Sinosenecio koreanus (Kom.) B. Nord., Tephroseris flammea (DC.) Holub and T. phaeantha (Nakai) C. Jeffrey & Y.L. Chen. were different from those in previous reports.
Investigation on weed flora in Lycium chinense upland fields was conducted to understand the current status of weed flora and establish the control measures. Investigation was conducted twice, May and June on 2015. From this investigation, 91 species of 30 families including 27 exotics were identified into 36 species of annuals, 28 species of biennials and 27 species of perennials. Dominance was the highest with Portulaca loeracea followed by Digitaria ciliaris, Stellaria media, Oxalis corniculata, Acalypha australis, Chenopodium album, Cyperus iria etc. in order. Chenopodium album was the highest in importance analysis and the followings were in order of Conyza canadensis, Conyza bonariensis, Senecio vulgaris, Amaranthus lividus, Sonchus asper etc.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the distribution patterns and characteristics of plant species by human impact in urban areas. In order to achieve a comprehensive data acquisition of all autogenously introduced vascular plant species occurring in the city of Cheon-ju, this study made an analysis of 106 sample plots, each with a size of one hectare, These sample plots were selected to represent the typical land-use patterns within the city of Cheon-ju and to cover the various distances from the city center. Species richness, patterns of life forms, and the percentage of non-native species were analyzed in relation to the degree of hemeroby of the sample plots. It was found that the species number appeared the largest in sites that were moderately influenced. This result corresponds to the intermediate disturbance hypothesis that moderate disturbance leads to an increase in species richness. The flora of sites which were subject to the highest level of human impact, was characterized by a high proportion of annual species and non-native species. In addition, some species were divided into three groups with similar distribution corresponding to land-use type and urban zone: urbanophobic (e.g. Indigofera kirilowii, Prunus sargentii, Rhus trichocarpa), urbanoneutral (e.g. Commelina communis, Erigeron annuus, Metaplexis japonica) and urbanophilus (e.g. Euphorbia supina, Senecio vulgaris, Taraxacum officinale).
