  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the 'Action Competence on Climate Change(ACoCC)' shown in 12 types of middle school 「Technology & Home Economics」 textbooks written according to the 2015 revised curriculum, and to suggest ways to improve the activity tasks. According to the results of the analysis, first, the 'knowledge on climate change' was the most frequently mentioned, and 'climate change communication' was the least frequently mentioned in the textbook among ACoCC. Second, all 12 textbooks dealt with 'knowledge about climate change' most frequently, yet the frequency of mentioning other competencies differed by publisher. In relation to the core concepts, the ACoCCs were most often discussed in the 'Management,' yet never discussed in the 'Life Design' at all. In relation to the academic sub-fields of home economics, the 'clothing life' showed the highest frequency of mentioning ACoCCs, while 'family life' the lowest frequency. Based on the results of the above analysis, it was suggested that the capacity to respond to climate change should be dealt with in the overall fields of home economics education. This study has implications as a basic study related to climate change in home economics education, and it is expected that various research and educational programs in home economics education that focus on climate change mitigation are implemented in the future.

As following the analysis of each textbook volume of the proportion in the contents related to safety education, 224.9 pages are on the first volume and 111.9 pages are on the second volume. As grades increase from year one to year three, the proportion of safety education in home economics textbooks is decreased. The highest number of safety education contents unit is 'Self-management of youth' which includes three parts of safety education. To this end, the 'housing' area in the 2015 revised curriculum of home economics and textbooks were analyzed from a critical literacy perspective. Using Laster(1986)'s critical science curriculum development course and "A Teacher's guideFamily, Food and Society"(Staaland & Storm, 1996), a 'Citizenship raising curriculum of home economics education in the housing area.' was developed. The results of this research are as follows. First, when the the curriculum was examined, the teaching objectives of the overall subject, or the achievement criteria, learning elements, and evluative methods of the housing area consisted of practical problem solving curriculum that can include critical literacy content. In addition, as a result of analyzing the text of the three textbooks' housing areas, it was found that most of them were described as adapting to and coping with the current culture, and few problems or social issues were mentioned that could lead to critical literacy. Second, the housing area curriculum for critical literacy learning was developed, with a total of 13 plan of 7 modules including continuous interests, valued ends, learning contents, and 26 learning materials including reading materials, and video materials. Based on the findings, the next curriculum and textbook should address social issues related to critical literacy and various classes of housing, and teachers' communities and training should be operated to support teachers who can be examplary for practical reasoning and critical thinking.

  • This study aims to give a broad overview of family-related contents in home economics from the 1st national curriculum to the 2007 revised national curriculum, thereby contributing to value fulfillment, textbook research, and educational development of home economics. The findings are summed up as follows: First, this study looks at the change of family-related goals and contents in home economics tutorials by national curriculum. Family-related goals shift a focus from a member of nation to individual pursuit of happiness, and the scope of family-related contents expands from a part of family (i.e. understanding of children) to every aspect of family life. Second, family-related contents record a higher share in home economics textbooks at the later stage of national curriculum. Third, this study classifies the change of family-related contents in home economics textbooks by national curriculum into seven categories: understanding of human development, process of human development, parenting and parental roles, understanding of family and family transition, marriage and family development, family relationship and issues, and family well-being. In particular, 'understanding of human development' underscores fundamental principles between the 3rd~6th national curriculum, 'process of human development' broadens its initial focuses on infancy and the preschool period to every scope of human development after the 5th national curriculum. 'Parenting and parental role' continues to stress parental roles and duties plus childcare for infants and preschoolers. In 'understanding of family and family transition,' national curriculums show the biggest difference in family perspectives subject to social change, and later national curriculums feature various family types recently on the rise. In 'marriage and family development,' initial national curriculums construe marriage as a necessity, whereas later national curriculums emphasize it as a matter of choice intertwined with mature love and responsibility. With coming under spotlight in recent national curriculum, 'family relationship and issues' highlights communication and family views based on gender equality for family unity. 'Family well-being' constitutes a pivotal part in the 2007 revised national curriculum, and it has recently emerged as the hottest issue in the family area as it presents lifelong welfare.

The content analyses were done to examine the elements of green life education reflected in 'Characteristics and Objectives', 'Contents', and 'Teaching learning/Contents dealing Strategies' parts of the curriculum through two checking steps. The elements of green life education were included in all parts of the Home Economics Curricula of both countries except the 'Characteristics and Objectives' part of Japanese Curriculum. In both the Korean and Japanese Curricula, the element of green life was the most frequently and concretely reflected in the 'Contents' part, contrary to the 'Characteristics and Objectives' part where the element was the most rarely and abstractly reflected. • This study selected the objects and the content factors of multicultural education in home economics, and analyzed multicultural contents reflected on high school technology & home economics textbooks. Based on these results, this study suggests the direction for improving technology & home economics textbook. We set up the object of multicultural education in home economics as creating the new culture through developing multicultural ability by critical thinking. The distribution analysis of multicultural contents of six kinds of technology & home economics textbook resulted that most of contents are assigned to 'knowledge section'. And 'personal relationship and group function' holds the highest ratio among the sub-sections of 'function section'. The 'value section' shows even distribution in its sub-sections. Most of textbooks contain characteristics of Korean traditional culture and necessary value in multicultural society. But, there are lack of contents about the way of communication with other cultures and coexist with diverse cultures. When we develops new textbook hereafter, it is necessary to contain the contents about which can help to understand and respect diverse culture through the egalitarian perspective and, by extension, which can make students think critically about the attitude, values, environment and way of live together with multicultural members in society. From now on Home Economics education will help the students who live in multicultural society to be understand about the differences in diverse culture and to create a desirable culture through the critical thinking as well.
