  • Conventional Earthquake Early Warning System (EEWS) detects the propagated P-wave from epicenter which should be achieved within 5 seconds to provide seconds to minutes of warning, allowing people to prepare for protective actions. EEWS in Korea is currently capable of providing a warning within 50 seconds after the primary P-wave detection, however, it is well-known that earthquake warning systems operating around Korean National Parks (KNP) have limited capability to fully monitor earthquake events. This study, therefore, presents a strategy to quantify the potential vulnerability to earthquake hazards by superimposing the distribution of Korea Integrated Seismic System (KISS) and the discretized map of KNP. Total 22 national parks are evaluated, and the results suggest that the improvement of the on-site systems should be necessitated for Gyoengju, Gyeryongsan, Songnisan, Gayasan, and Deogyusan national parks, whereas enhancement of regional systems is required for Bukhansan national park.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the possibility of establishing a reproductive system for the seed of Pedicularis hallaisanensis, which is in the endangered wild species II class in Korea. The seed of P. hallaisanensis is egg-shaped, and the seed coat is dark brown. The embryo was identified as a dwarf type by the seed section. The seed length was $0.47{\pm}0.07mm$, width $0.16{\pm}0.006mm$, and thickness $0.12{\pm}0.01mm$. The weight of one seed was $0.0003{\pm}0.0001mg$, and 1000 seeds weighed $4.59{\pm}0.02mg$. The degree of seed viability was 75.33% by the tetrazolium (TZ) assay. The highest germination rate of P. hallaisanensis seed was 71% after 4 weeks of storage at $4^{\circ}C$. However, the germination rate tended to decrease gradually over a longer storage period. The germination rates after 6 or 8 weeks of storage at $4^{\circ}C$ were 64% and 60%, respectively. We used two host plants, Artemisia princeps and Dendranthema zawadskii, to determine the effect of host plants on P. hallaisanensis seed germination. The germination of P. hallaisanensis mixed with A. princeps or D. zawadskii started at 53.5 and 62.5 days after sowing, respectively. We did not find any germination 164 days postsowing with both host plants. When A. princeps and D. zawadskii were used as host plants for P. hallaisanensis seed germination, P. hallaisanensis seed germination rates were 45.5% and 19.5%, respectively. The average time to germination was 70.2 days for A. princeps, and 46.8 days for D. zawadskii.

  • This study examined several characteristics such as the relationships between environmental attitudes and national park visitors' socio-economic characteristics, and between environmental attitudes and their travel motivations. Environmental attitude was measured using the modified New Environmental Paradigm(NEP) scale, where five response options existed(from strongly disagree to strongly agree). Data for this empirical analysis were obtained from 2,647 participants at six national parks-Sulaksan, Kayasan, Naeiangsan, Pookhansan, Taeanhaean, and Hanryohaesang. Results showed that most visitors gave a pro-NEP response ranging from neutral attitude to pro-environmentalism. Environmental attitudes correlated positively with education level, while, negatively with age. Environmental concern, also, generally correlated positively with 'rest' and 'health' motivators, while, negatively with 'socialization' and 'vacation' motivators. The findings of this study suggest that education is the most effective politic measure to lead pro-environmental concern for park visitors. And, given the nature of the relationship between environmental concern and visitors' motivation, park managers should be more careful handling with family and group visitors who have 'vacation' and 'socialization' motivators than 'rest' and 'health' motivators.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide data for conservation management of Pinus densiflora forest by analyzing ecological characteristics and the change of Pinus densiflora community structure for fifteen years in Gayasan National Park. According to the results of TWINSPAN analysis of Pinus densiflora forest, there were twenty plots(unit: $500m^2$)and it was classified into seven community types. The dominant species were Pinus densiflora in canopy layer, Carpinus laxiflora, Quercus variabilis, Quercus serrata in the understory layer and Sasa borealis, Rhododendron mucronulatum, Rhus trichocarpa in the shrub layer. The index of shannon's diversity was from 0.6803 to 1.2559 per $500m^2$ and the range of species number was from twenty-seven to fourty. As a result of the change of Pinus densiflora forest structure, the importance percentage(I.P.) of Carpinus laxiflora, Quercus variabilis, Quercus serrata in the understory layer were increased for fifteen years. The index of shannon's diversity changed $0.2608{\sim}1.0124\;into\;0.5547{\sim}1.2567\;per\;500m^2$ and species number changed $14{\sim}26\;into\;26{\sim}34$ for fifteen year.

  • A census of the forest vegetation of Mt. Kaya National Park was taken with respect to the medthods of ordination and classification. Eight groups were classified by cluster analysis : Quercus mongolica, Q. mongolica-Sasa borealis, Q. serrata, Q. variabilis, Carpinus laxiflora, Cornus controversa, Fraxinus mandshurica and Pinus densiflora. Among them, the Q. mongolica group and Q. mongolica-S. borealis group, the F. mandshurica group and C. controversa group showed similar floristic compositions to each other. The interrelationship between the floristic compositon of the vegetation and soil environment was analyzed by PCA, the Q. mongolica group and the Q. mongolica-S. borealis group were distributed in areas of high CEC and total nitrogen content, while the Q. serrata. Q. variabilis. C. laxiflora and Pinus densiflora groups formed their communities in the more moderate areas of pH, soil moisture and soil organic matter. F. mandshurica and C. controversa groups were distributed in the areas of high soil moisture, soil organic matter, pH and available phosphate.

  • This study aims to compare and analyze the environment of natural parks and Ulleung island using the plant taxa classified by five degrees based on their distributional ranges. The scores differentially given based on the importance of each degree; taxa belonging to the fifth degree are given to 20 scores each, fourth 10, third 5, second 3.3, and first 2.5, respectively. The total assessed scores were ranked as Mt. Halla, Seorak, Jiri, Deokyu, Is. Ulleung, Mt. Sobaek, Odae, Palgong, Chink, Taebaek, Songni, Juwang, Gaya, Duryun, Gaeryong, Bukhan, Naebyeon, Worak, Naejang, Cheongryang, Naeyeon, Myeongii, Jokye, Mudeung, Wolchul, Geumo, Juheul, Biseul, Hwangmae, Jangan, Seonun, Moak, Seonam, Chilgap, and Gibaek, in order, respectively. It is suggested that the natural environments assessing more than 1,000 of total scores such as Mt. Halla and Mt. Deokyu are regarded as the most excellent ones, and those between 700 to 1,000 of total scores such as Is. Ulleung and Mt. Odae are regarded as relatively excellent ones. Natural parks scored between 500 to 700 such as Mt. Palgong and Mt. Gaya are regarded as good ones and parks scored between 300 to 500 such as Mt. Duryun and Mt. Mudeung are regarded as normal ones. The area assessed less than 300 of total scores such as Mt. Wolchul and Mt. Gibaek are regarded as the most inferior ones. The total scores of the national parks are generally higher than those of the provincial and county parks. In addition, Ulleung island has a total of 882.9 scores. Therefore, according to the IUCN the Ulleung island should be included in the criterion of the preservative model of natural ecosystem, suggested by Ministry of Environment. At the same time, Ulleung island should be included to the superior model of natural scenery resources by its uniqueness of topography, geography and natural environments. Ulleung island is assessed as having relatively excellent natural environments as compared with other national parks, suggesting that the island should be designated as a new national park.

  • A survey of Hongryu-Dong and Chi-in district. Gaya National Park, was conducted using 40 sample sites of 500$m^2$ size. TWINSPAN classification confirmed a complex pattern of both local and geographical variation in the vegetation: Dry and wet community types. Within dry community types, two floristic assocation of Pinus densiflora were defined according to local variation. Within wet community types. two floristic association were defined according to altitude. Those associations can be further subdivided floristically into eight subassociation. The vegetation pattern presented by DCA ordination corresponds to one of TWINSPAN at the first two division. The DCA ordination was successful in separating Pinus densiflora from broad leaf forest. Ordination of samples produced arrangements reflectly environmental gradient of soil. The correlation between the first axe of DCA and soil moisture, soil acid, altitude, maximum species diversity and species diversity was significantly negative. The similarity index between each community was very low level.

  • This study was conducted from April 2012 to June 2012 to analyze breeding status of Black woodpeckers (Dryocopus martius) in the Gayasan National Park. Nest height, tree diameter which a nest built and altitude at the nest site of Black woodpeckers were 17.4 m, 63.8 cm and 587 m, respectively. A pair of Black woodpeckers completed a clutch in 4 eggs on 7 May and 3 of eggs hatched on 24 May 2012. Both female and male incubated eggs and never left eggs without one of parents. A male more contributed to build a nest than a female. Incubation duration was higher in a male than in a female. Nestlings made a begging call in a nest during the growing period. Begging frequency of nestlings increased from 11 days up to 20 days after hatching. After then, nestlings reduced begging and fledged a nest 24 days after hatching. This study provided information of breeding ecology to protect and manage population of Black woodpeckers which are endangered species in South Korea.

  • To investigate edge vegetation structure and edge species in Kaya Mountain National Park, field survey was executed from July to August, 1989 and the result are as follows. Cantilevered and advancing types of edge vegetation were observed on site, The relative importance values of major species were changed along distance from edge to forest interior and were seemed to be affected by aspect, soil moisture and present tree layer vegetation. Especially, light-oriented species were observed as a codominant species under pine tree canopy due to selective allelopathy effect and thin canopy. Ecological indices according to the distance from edge to forest interior did not show regular pattern, but edge depth was estimated as 15-20m, approximately, Dominant species of edge seemed to be affected by soil moisture rather than altitude and aspect, but floristic similarities seemed to be affected by altitude. Frequency classes of edge species were different by aspect, altitude and physiogra-phical location. Lespedeza maximowiczii, Weigela subsessilis and Fraxinus rhynchophylla showed high frequency class in all environment conditions.
