  • The current study was conducted to evaluate the effect of music enrichment on the live body weight of chickens and meat quality grade of the carcasses. Fourteen flocks at four broiler farms with identical windowless houses were provided with identical starter and finisher diets. These were either exposed to classical music or not exposed to any music from the starter to slaughter age. At 30 days posthatch, the chickens were transported from farms to a slaughterhouse. Two hundred carcasses from each flock were randomly selected for measurement of the carcass traits by the licensed meat inspectors at the slaughterhouse. The live body weights at the slaughter age were not significantly different between the two treatments. In addition, music enrichment did not affect meat freshness (i.e., torrymeter values) nor did it affect other carcass trait variables including percentage of bruises, flesh blemishes, abnormalities, and quality A grade. In conclusion, music enrichment did not affect the body weight or carcass quality of broiler chickens.

  • In recent years, consumers have recognized the issue of and expressed concern over farm animal welfare. Therefore, worldwide, chicken farms are transitioning from traditional caged breeding systems to welfare-oriented breeding systems. In this study, we further analyzed and compared the prevalence and protection rate of various diseases by challenging chickens under conventional and welfare-oriented breeding conditions with low pathogenic avian influenza. Ten chickens were randomly selected from each farm (conventional and welfare) from which Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) and Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) were identified and isolated. Additionally, low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) were challenged to broilers from each farm and samples were collected from these chickens using oral and cloacal swabs to investigate viral shedding and titer. The results showed that Mycoplasma infection did not significantly differ between breeding systems. Initially, LPAI viral shedding and titer significantly differed between breeding systems post-challenge, but as the experiment progressed, there was ultimately no significant difference.

  • For prevention of atrophic rhinitis of swine by Bordetella bronchiseptica and fowl typhoid by Salmonella gallinarum, bacterial strains showing antimicrobial activity against those pathogenic bacteria were isolated from various samples collected at animal farms. Among 372 bacterial isolates strain TK3 showed the highest antibacterial activity against both pathogens, and was identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. B. amyloliquefaciens TK3 could inhibit growth of both pathogens by secretion of antibacterial compounds such as siderophore, rhamnolipid and antimicrobial peptide. Production radius of siderophore on Chrome azurol S agar plate by strain TK3 was 0.53 cm after 14 days of incubation, and concentration of siderophore in King's B medium was 1.06 mmol/ml. It also secreted 82.4 mg/L of rhamnolipid, and antimicrobial peptide that completely inhibited growth of both pathogens at concentration of $30{\mu}l/ml$ in LB medium.

  • In this study, to increase the survival rate of frozen/thaw rooster semen, standard protocols of semen thawing procedures were tested by computer-assisted sperm assay (CASA). We tested 4 different thawing protocols for frozen semen, $5^{\circ}C$ for 2 min, $35^{\circ}C$ for 30 s, $54^{\circ}C$ for 13 s, and $70^{\circ}C$ for 7 s. The pooled semen from 5 to 8 Ogye rooster line was diluted in the HS-1 diluent and frozen in 8% methylacetamide (MA) in liquid nitrogen vapors. To determine standard thawing method, straws were plunged into different temperatures and times. The resulting motilities were recorded by the CASA system. The results of this study showed that the best viability of the spermatozoa was shown by exposure at $5^{\circ}C$ for 2 min. Moreover, the longevity test of thawed sperm at $5^{\circ}C$ for 2 min also supported the higher viability under low temperature preservation of $17^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. Further research is needed to increase the motility of thawed rooster semen for field application. In addition, the in vivo tests for different rooster lines are also needed for the establishment of avian genetic resource bank.

  • Salmonella is closely related with human health of modern society which has concern increased in livestock goods consumption as well as give economic damage throughout the chicken industry such as farm, hatchery, slaughter house and processing plant. From 2007 to 2011, this study investigated Salmonella prevalence from 200 old hen delivery trucks which deliver old egg-laying hens and broiler breeders in Korea. The prevalence of Salmonella species was 38.0% in old hen delivery truck. Serogroup C1 was the most frequently detected serogroup of Salmonella, followed by the serogroups D1, C2 and B. A total of 25 serotypes were identified and Salmonella infantis was the most frequently isolated serotype. In addition, we applied disinfectant to old hen delivery truck for the reduction of Salmonella contamination. The disinfectant consists of formaldehyde, glutaladehyde and quaternary ammonium compound was applied to the trucks. Salmonella isolation rate was significantly decreased after disinfection from 38.0% to 7.5%. Disinfectant could not effectively reduce Salmonella contamination at a dilution of 1:200 which is recommended by manufacturer, but Salmonella isolation rate was significantly decreased at a dilution of 1:50. Since old hen delivery truck could be a potential vector to carry Salmonella into farms and abattoirs, chicken delivery truck should be disinfected thoroughly and sufficiently to control contamination of farms and abattoirs.

  • Subsequent to the introduction of the "Laws on Consumption Promotion of Livestock Products" in 2002, a mandatory check-off system for the egg industry was introduced in June 2009. Unlike other livestock products, the check-off on eggs is financed not from the sale of the egg-the end product-but from the spent hen. Variables such as the falling price of spent hens lead to a low financing rate; The present farm allotment rate of 14%, introduced in 2015, is much higher than the 0.2% to 0.3% check-off rate in other types of business, thus placing a huge burden on farms. When check-off is financed from the egg, it is expected that 6.5 billion won will be raised using a rate of 0.3% of sale proceeds, Therefore, it is urgent for the government to establish infrastructure to enable producers and merchants to do business through Grade & Packing centers. This can be achieved by the staged construction of local Grade & Packing centers. Check-off should continue to be financed from the present spent hen until this infrastructure is established, and an institutional strategy should be provided by the government to raise the financing rate accurately and transparently using statistical treatment of supply data for spent hens as a short-term alternative.

  • This research was carried out to get the basic information on the current situation of personal computer utilization for poultry farm management, and the results obtained could be used in developing of the software system for the poultry farm management. Survey method by interview and mail was adopted to carry out the research, and the total number of data used to statistical analyses was k6 poultry farmers. 1. The ratio of the poultry farmers who had the personal computer(P/C) was about 25%, and the most of the layer farmers from age 30 to 40 who manage the flock size 20,000 or above had the P/C. 2. About 70% of the farmers who had P/C have bought the system after 1993, and 83% of those farmers had the P/C-486 or above level system. They bought the P/C with intent to apply it to farm management(39%) and education for children(31%). 3. About 50% of the farmers who had P/C obtained the relevant knowledge for operating computer system by themselves, and the 33% of the P/C-possessed farmers used P/C for word-processor. 4. About 35% of the farmers who had P/C applied their system to analyse the management analyses, and the sarne ratio of the farmers answered that they didn't apply the system to their farm management. 5. About 25% of the farmers who had P/C used package software, and the company which installed the automated cage system offered the software. 6. Most of the farmers considered the computerization of the farm management positively, and they answered that they will apply P/C to their management actively from now on. 7. About 56% of the farmers didn't think that they had sufficient knowledge for operating computer system, and a quarter of them pointed that the difficulty of the buying software for poultry farm management was the most biggest problem to spread out the computerization in the poultry farm. 8. Most of the poultry farmers didn't buy P/C because they didn't have the relevant knowledge for computer system, but they wanted to learn basic knowledge for computer, and they had the intention to apply computer to their management positively. In order to expand the computerization for poultry farm management, appropriate education system for the farmers from age 30 to 40 who manage the flock size 20,000 or above and the development of the software that could be applied to poultry farm management on the spot efficiently should be made.

  • This study was designed to estimate effect of wood vinegar on meat quality in old Layer which was low production and low economic value. The old layer chickens were used to resource for income increase of layer farm and protein supply. Two hundred forty Isa Brown chickens were assigned with control(Broiler feed), Treatment 1 (Broiler feed with addition of domestic wood vinegar $0.8\%$) and Treatment 2(Broiler feed with addition of foreign wood vinegar $0.4\%$). Feed intake of control group was lower 3g than other treatments. This is the reason of result that what organic acid in wood vinegar of treatment groups affect to feed digestibility, The different of chicken production was depended on ingredient and included value of wood vinegar in domestic and foreign. Foreign wood vinegar have organic acids which that functionally act sexual Pheromone so that promote endocrine matter. This is reason that old Layer chicken increase to egg production rate. Treatment 2 group effect to thigh meat rather than breast meat and improve to value of crude fat and meat color. The Meat quality and sensory test of thigh meat of foreign wood vinegar was better appraise rather than that of domestic wood vinegar. Because foreign wood vinegar make to fine of meat tissue and to decline cooking loss and also to increase juiciness and tenderness on sensory test.

  • This study was conducted to establish a comprehensive grading guideline for poultry. Guidelines for sampling size and grading were determined on the basis of survey data obtained from chicken processing house. Results were summarized as follows : For application unit, most chicken processing house preferred lot unit to farm unit. Most processing house did not want the total survey method, but selection sampling. At the beginning of the grading system, chicken processing house wanted to apply the system to a particular lots for which the company requests. There were much suggestions for grading not only portion meat, but also whole chicken. Bigger processing house preferred no. $8\~12$ to be graded. Most of large-scale processing houses used more than 81 volts for stunning and cooling tanks by soaking. For shipping chicken, Large-scale processing houses used both individual and box packing while small ones only used box packing.
