  • Applying the concept and components of human nature to the conversational agent in the smart home context, this study investigated the effects of the level of anthropomorphism and interaction type on the emotional user experiences and future use intention. The results of experiment study showed that the high-low condition of anthropomorphism and the voice-chatting interaction type have impacts on the perceived closeness, likability, and future use intention. That is, people evaluate the conversational agent as more close, likable, and useful when they perceive more human nature components and when in the voice interaction mode. Psychological resistance was lower in the voice than in the chatting mode regardless of the level of anthropomorphism. The results also demonstrated an interaction effect of anthropomorphism and interaction type on the future use intention: the effect of anthropomorphism existed only in the voice interaction mode. It leads to the conclusion that a conversational agent with the voice recognition interface should be designed with the higher level of human nature components for the continuous use.

  • When a great variety of services become available to user through the broadband convergence network in the ubiquitous home environment, an intelligent agent is required to deal with the complexity of services and perceive intension of a user. Different from the old-fashioned command-based user interface for selecting services, conversation enables flexible and rich interactions between human and agents, but diverse expressions of the user's background and context make conversation hard to implement by using either user-initiative or system-initiative methods. To deal with the ambiguity of diverse expressions between user and agents, we have to apply hierarchial bayesian networks for the mixed initiative conversation. Missing information from user's query is analyzed by hierarchial bayesian networks to inference the user's intension so that can be collected through the agent's query. We have implemented this approach in ubiquitous home environment by implementing simulation program.

  • The call-takers in the 119 General Situation Room are playing important roles in recognizing the first crisis situation such as fire, rescue, and emergency, and in starting up the response system. In particular, with regard to the emergency calls, the prompt and accurate surveillance can determine the patient's life as well as the prognosis. Based on April 8-December 31, 2014 Prehospital Care Reports in a metropolitan city, we analyzed the conversation turns and the conversation time between the agent and the caller, and the time of the conversation structure and sequence according to the reception routes and the severity of symptoms. The conversation analysis between the agent and the caller will be useful for the development and improvement of the action manual in the future.

  • In this paper, we propose a conversational quality measurement (CQM) system for providing the objective QoS of high quality mobile VoIP voice telecommunication. For measuring the conversational quality, the VoIP telecommunication system is implemented in two smart phones connected with VoIP. The VoIP telecommunication system consists of echo cancellation, noise reduction, speech encoding/decoding, packet generation with RTP (Real-Time Protocol), jitter buffer control and POS (Play-out Schedule) with LC (loss Concealment). The CQM system is connected to a microphone and a speaker of each smart phone. The voice signal of each speaker is recorded and used to measure CE (Conversational Efficiency), CS (Conversational Symmetry), PESQ (Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality) and CE-CS-PESQ correlation. We prove the CQM system by measuring CE, CS and PESQ under various SNR, delay and loss due to IP network environment.

  • This study conducts data visualization of common climax patterns of Korean blockbuster films to analyze shots and evaluate scene (subplot unit) arrangement. For this purpose, a model of editing patterns is used to analyze how many climax patterns a film contains. Moreover, a system, which automatically collects shot images and classifies shot sizes of collected data, is designed to demonstrate that a single scene is composed based on a climax pattern. As a scene is a subplot and thus its arrangement cannot fully be analyzed only by climax patterns, dialogues of starring actors are also used to identify scenes, and the result is compared with data visualization results. It detects dialogues between particular actors and visualizes dialogue formation in a network form. Such network visualization enables the arrangement of main subplots to be analyzed, and the box office performance of a film can be explained by the density of subplots. The study of two types comparison analysis is expected to contribute to planning, plotting, and producing films.

  • This study tries to figure out the communication types between a mother-in-law and a foreign daughter-in-law through their 'confrontational conversation.' For this, three episodes of 'Multicultural Mother-in-law and Daughter-in-law Biography' aired by EBS (Education Broadcasting System) were monitored. The dialogues between the mother-in-law and the foreign daughter-in-law were written down and analyzed. According to the result, there were 'dysfunctional communication' styles during their conversation. Theses styles deepened their conflict. Thus, to abate the conflict between the mother-in-law and the foreign daughter-in-law, this study suggested that it was necessary to develop the convergence counseling program and the family therapy for their functional communication.

  • In order to realize foreign language education, various existing educational media have been provided, but there are disadvantages in that the cost of the parish and the media program is high and the real-time responsiveness is poor. In this paper, we propose an artificial intelligence English conversation system based on VR and speech recognition. We used Google CardBoard VR and Google Speech API to build the system and developed artificial intelligence algorithms for providing virtual reality environment and talking. In the proposed speech recognition server system, the sentences spoken by the user can be divided into word units and compared with the data words stored in the database to provide the highest probability. Users can communicate with and respond to people in virtual reality. The function provided by the conversation is independent of the contextual conversations and themes, and the conversations with the AI assistant are implemented in real time so that the user system can be checked in real time. It is expected to contribute to the expansion of virtual education contents service related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution through the system combining the virtual reality and the voice recognition function proposed in this paper.

  • Communication problems have been regarded as one of the biggest causes in trouble in many industries. This led to extensive research on communication as a part of human error analysis. The results of existing researches have revealed that maintaining a good quality of communication is essential to secure the safety of a large and complex process system. In this paper, we suggested a method to measure the quality of communication during off-normal situation in main control room of nuclear power plants. It evaluates the cosine similarity that is a measure of sentence similarity between two operators by finding the cosine of the angle between them. To check the applicability of the method to evaluate communication quality, we compared the result of communication quality analysis with the result of operation performance that was performed by operators under simulated environment.

  • This study was conducted to explore important factors to consider when designing voice-based psychological counseling agents amid the increasing use of conversational agents in counseling and psychotherapy. 48 participants selected their preferred agent's voice among four types (young women and men, middle-aged women and men) and had a conversation with a psychological counseling agent. They also evaluated the reasons for voice selection, mood changes, perception of the agent's characteristics, and counseling outcomes. As a results, the agent's voice type selected according to the user's gender was not statistically significant. However, the qualitative analysis showed 'comfort' of the voice was an important factor. Next, the user's mood improved significantly after the conversation with the agent, which confirmed the intervention effect. Finally, it was found that expertness and attractiveness perceptions toward the agent contributed to the counseling outcomes. The implications of the study and suggestions for future research were discussed.

  • In this paper, a Silent Speech Interface (SSI) technology was proposed in which Doppler frequency shifts of the reflected signal were used to synthesize the speech signals when 40kHz ultrasonic signal was incident to speaker's mouth region. In SSI, the mapping rules from the features derived from non-speech signals to those from audible speech signals was constructed, the speech signals are synthesized from non-speech signals using the constructed mapping rules. The mapping rules were built by minimizing the overall errors between the estimated and true speech parameters in the conventional SSI methods. In the present study, the mapping rules were constructed so that the distribution of the estimated parameters is similar to that of the true parameters by using Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN). The experimental result using 60 Korean words showed that, both objectively and subjectively, the performance of the proposed method was superior to that of the conventional neural networks-based methods.
