  • In this study, we used hybrid module that was composed of packing granular activated carbon (GAC) between module inside and outside of ceramic microfiltration membrane for advanced drinking water treatment. Instead of natural organic matters (NOM) and fine inorganic particles in natural water source, synthetic water was prepared with humic acid and kaolin. Packing fraction of GAC was changed from 0 to 24.05% to see effect of packing fraction. As a result, changing curves of resistance of membrane fouling ($R_f$) and permeate flux (J) during 3 h operation were almost overlapped independent of packing fraction of GAC. Treatment efficiencies of turbidity were very high above 99.46% at all packing fractions of GAC. And treatment efficiency of NOM, which was measured by $UV_{254}$ absorbance, was the highest value of 99.43% at packing fraction of 24.05%. Then, we operated the hybrid process during 13 h at packing fraction of 24.05%. As a result, J was rapidly dropped according to increase of membrane fouling within initial 1 h of operation, and almost constant after 3 h. And treatment efficiencies of turbidity and NOM were stable and high values of 99.52% and 96.63%, respectively.

  • In vitro and in vivo experiments were carried out to evaluate the nutritive value of three tropical browse species as assessed by DM and CP digestibility, and NDF and ADF degradability with incubation times (T) of 6, 12, 24 and 48h. During the in vivo digestibility experiment three male castrated sheep (age 16 - 25 months) with a mean liveweight of $11.5{\pm}0.9kg$ were placed in individual metabolism stalls and were allocated to one of the three browse species in a $3{\times}3$ Latin square design. The browse species were all leguminous and consisted of: Acacia sieberina (A. sieberina), Ficus polita (F. polita), and Ficus sycomorus (F. sycomorus). The mean DM and CP contents of F. polita were higher than for A. sieberina and F. sycomorus (p<0.05). In contrast the NDF and ADF contents of F. sycomorus were higher compared to the other species examined (p<0.05). The in vitro DM and CP digestibility, and NDF and ADF degradability observed at different stages of incubation were higher in F. polita followed by A. sieberina and F. sycomorus. The DM and CP digestibility at 48 h incubation were 72.92, 74.84 and 53.52% and 77.38, 77.68 and 63.64% for A. seiberina, F. polita and F. sycomorus, respectively. This shows that F. polita contains more soluble materials which ruminant can benefit from and hence has more feeding value. The fermentation of F. sycomorus was slower for all the nutrients evaluated due to the presence of more fibre. Similarly, higher in vivo digestibility coefficient of DM, CP, NDF, ADF and hemicellulose were observed for F. polita reflecting its higher values of CP, ether extract (EE) and hemicellulose associated with lower values of NDF and ADF. Higher DMI and daily gain were recorded in sheep during feeding of F. polita compared to the other species evaluated. The digestibility of all the nutrients examined were higher in the in vivo than in the in vitro trial except for CP and DM. Sheep showed no visual signs of toxicity throughout the study periods. These results showed A. seiberina, F. polita and F. sycomorus can sustain sheep on a maintenance diet and could as well be used as a supplementary feed to low producing animals during the tropical dry season. Further research is needed to ascertain the viability of using these browse species on a long-term basis.

  • An actinomycetes F-97 producing tyrosinase inhibitor was isolated from soil samples. Isolation and purification of tyrosinase inhibitor produced by F-97 was performed as follows: IRC-120 ($NH_4^+$ type) column chromatography, silica gel column chromatography, $C_{18}$ column chromatography and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography were used successively after the centrifuged supernatant was adjusted to pH 4.0. To identify the purity of the inhibitor, octadecylsilyl(ODS) HPLC was carried out with 5% methanol as a mobile phase. Finally, the purification yield of a tyrosinase inhibitor was 5.24%. The inhibitor was very soluble in water, methanol and ethanol but insoluble in acetone, butanol, ethylacetate and chloroform. The ${\lambda}_{max}$ value of this inhibitor in water was 194nm under UV light. The biochemical test of the inhibitor was positive in Molish, Benedict, cone. $H_2SO_4$, and $KMnO_4$ tests but negative in iodine, ninhydrin, Million, Sakaguchi, xanthoproteic and Emerson tests. The tyrosinase inhibitor was stable against heat treatment of $100^{\circ}C$ for 50 minutes and pH $4{\sim}9$. The $IC_{50}$ value of this inhibitor was $19.2{\mu}g/ml$ for mushroom tyrosinase. In $1,000{\mu}g/ml$ inhibitor concentration, inhibition zone was 27 mm for Streptomyces bikiniensis NRRL B-1049. The inhibition of F-97 against mushroom tyrosinase was competitive with tyrosine.

  • Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) exhibits three polymorphs: calcite with arhombohedral, vaterite with a spherical, and aragonite with a needle-like structure. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of the morphology of CaCO3 are very important to investigate the synthesis of single-crystal vaterite and aragonite. In this work, the polymorphs of calcium carbonate were quantitatively analyzed using XRD. Pure vaterite and pure aragonite were synthesized and the peak distribution of a single phase was analyzed. The vaterite fraction of a mixture of calcite and vaterite was calculated based on the intensity of a specific diffraction peak, and compared to the results based on the peak area. The mean value of fsV (the correction factor for the peak area of vaterite) was 0.654. The phase analysis of calcite-aragonite mixtures was performed, and the mean value of fsA (the correction factor for the peak area of aragonite) was obtained as 0.6713. Using these factors, Eq. (24)~Eq. (32) for the quantitative analysis based on the total peak area of XRD were derived to calculate the phase contents of ternary phase CaCO3. And three-component XRD section was defined considering overlapping sections.

  • Ibuprofen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; NSAIDs, is a highly crystalline substance with the pharmaceutical properties of poor solubility and low bioavailability. The size reduction of ibuprofen is needed to improve the solubility. The objective of this study is to optimize the grinding condition of ibuprofen. Grinding of ibuprofen was carried out using a planetary mill. Grinding parameters were optimized using Box-Behnken experimental design method. The physical characteristics of ground ibuprofen were investigated for the particle size by particle size analyzer, for the crystal size by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and for the tensile strength by tensile/compression tester. The optimum conditions for the milling of ibuprofen were 290 rpm of the revolution number of mill, 24.6 g of the weight of sample, and 10 minutes of grinding time. The measured value of the particle size of ground ibuprofen at these optimum conditions was $13.5{\mu}m$. The results showed that the crystal size of ibuprofen was reduced by the planetary milling process. In case the relative density of the tablets formulated of ground ibuprofen was range of 0.85~0.90, the tensile strength of them was range of 1$2{\sim}14Kg_f/cm^2$.

  • One of the endoglucanases, F-I-III, was purified from the culture filtrate of T. sp. C-4 through procedures including chromatography on Sephacryl S-200, DEAE-Sepharose A-50, and Chromatofocusing on Mono-P (FPLC). The molecular weight of the enzyme was determined to be about 56,000 Da by SDS-PAGE, and pI of 4.9 by analytical isoelectric focusing. F-I-III showed the highest enzyme activity at $55^{\circ}C$, and the pH optimum of the enzyme was 5.0. There was no loss of activity when the enzyme was incubated at $50^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. The specific activity of the enzyme F-I-III toward the CMC was 315.4 U/mg. The Km value for $PNPG_2$ of F-I-III was 2.69 mM. N-terminal sequence of F-I-III was analyzed to be QPGTSTPEVHPKKLTTYK. It showed $95\%$ of homology to that of EGI from T. reesei. The presence of some metal ions (1 mM) had only a little effect on CMCase activity. The treatment of the reducing agents resulted in the increase of endoglucanase activity.

  • In this work, open stubs were fabricated on a polyether sulfone (PES) substrate, and their basic radio frequency (RF) characteristics were investigated for application to RF matching components of a flexible monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC). According to the results, an open stub employing coplanar waveguide (OSCPW) on PES exhibited much lower loss than that on silicon substrate. The OSCPW with a length of $500{\mu}m$ on PES showed capacitance values of 0.031 ~ 0.044 pF from 0.5 to 50 GHz. For application to a relatively high-value capacitive matching, an open stub employing a fishbone-type transmission line (OSFTTL) was fabricated on PES, and its characteristics were investigated. The OSFTTL showed much higher capacitance values than the OSCPW due to the high effective permittivity value. Specifically, the OSFTTL on PES showed capacitance values of 0.066 ~ 0.24 pF from 0.5 to 50 GHz, which are higher than those for the open stub on silicon substrate. The above results indicate that the OSCPW and OSFTTL on PES can be effectively used for application to low/high-value capacitive matching components on microwave and millimeter wave flexible MMIC. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this work is the first report of the investigation of RF capacitive matching components on PES substrate.

  • The crystal structure of eprazinone dihydrochloride, $C_{24}H_{32}N_2O_2$${\cdot}$2HCl, has been determined from 2102 independent reflections collected on an automated Nonious CAD-4 diffractometer using graphite-monochromated $Mo-K\alpha$ radiation. The crystals are monoclinic, space group P$2_1$/n, with unit cell dimensions a=11.381(2), b=28.318(2), c=7.840(1) $\AA$, $\beta=92.45(2)^{\circ}$, ${\mu}=2.37$ c$m^{-1}$, F(000)=968, and Z=4. Final R value is 0.071 for independent 2102 observed reflections. The molecule assumes an extended conformation. The piperazine ring has a normal chair conformation and the four carbon atom are planar with a maximum displacement of 0.004 $\AA$ for C(18) atom. The two chloride ions are hydrogen bonded to the two piperazine nitrogen atoms [N(14)${\cdot}{\cdot}{\cdot}$Cl(1); 2.986(6) $\AA$ N(17)…Cl(2); 3.084(8) $\AA$].

  • Objective : In a variety of thoracolumbar diseases, corpectomy followed by interbody bone graft and anterior instrumentation has allowed direct neural decompression and reconstruction of the weight-bearing column by short segments fusion. In this study, we compared spinal stability of the two different anterior thoracolumbar instruments : Z-plate and Kaneda device representing plate and two-rods type, respectively. Methods : A retrospective review was performed for all the patients with thoracolumbar diseases or traumas treated with anterior corpectomy, autologous iliac bone graft, and fixation with instruments from 1996 to 2000. For the anterior instrumentation, Z-plate or Kaneda device was used for 24 [M:F=5:9, average age=37] and 12 [M:F=9:3, average age=41] patients, respectively. The plain AP and lateral flexion-extension films were taken immediately after surgery and at each follow-up. The sagittal and coronal Cobb's angles at the operation segments were used to observe the change of initial fixation status. The surgical time length and bleeding amount of the two groups were compared. Intra-operative and post-operative instrument associated complications were evaluated. Student t-test was used for statistical analysis and p-value less than 0.05 was considered to be significant. Results : Mean follow-up durations for Z-plate and Kaneda device were 24 and 21 months, respectively. The fusion rate was 91% for Z-plate and 100% for Kaneda device. Two cases of Z-plate group showed instrumentation failure during the follow up period, in which additional surgery was necessary. The mean differences of sagittal Cobb's angles among the AP images immediate after surgery and at follow-up were 7 and 2 degrees for Z-plate and Kaneda device, respectively [p<0.05]. The mean differences of coronal Cobb's angles were 5 and 2 degrees for Z-plate and Kaneda device, respectively [p<0.05]. No Intra-operative complication has occurred in both groups. There was no difference in surgery time and bleeding amount between two groups. Conclusion : We think that Kaneda device [rod type] is stronger than Z-plate [plate type] to keep the spinal stability after anterior thoracolumbar surgery.
