Planar BiVO4 and 3 wt% Mo-doped BiVO4 (abbreviated as Mo:BiVO4) film were prepared by the facile spin-coating method on fluorine doped SnO2(FTO) substrate in the same precursor solution including the Mo precursor in Mo:BiVO4 film. After annealing at a high temperature of 450℃ for 30 min to improve crystallinity, the films exhibited the monoclinic crystalline phase and nanoporous architecture. Both films showed no remarkably discrepancy in crystalline or morphological properties. To investigate the effect of surface passivation exploring the Al2O3 layer, the ultra-thin Al2O3 layer with a thickness of approximately 2 nm was deposited on BiVO4 film using the atomic layer deposition (ALD) method. No distinct morphological modification was observed for all prepared BiVO4 and Mo:BiVO4 films. Only slightly reduced nanopores were observed. Although both samples showed some reduction of light absorption in the visible wavelength after coating of Al2O3 layer, the Al2O3 coated BiVO4 (Al2O3/BiVO4) film exhibited enhanced photoelectrochemical performance in 0.5 M Na2SO4 solution (pH 6.5), having higher photocurrent density (0.91 mA/㎠ at 1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), briefly abbreviated as VRHE) than BiVO4 film (0.12 mA/㎠ at 1.23 VRHE). Moreover, Al2O3 coating on the Mo:BiVO4 film exhibited more enhanced photocurrent density (1.5 mA/㎠ at 1.23 VRHE) than the Mo:BiVO4 film (0.86 mA/㎠ at 1.23 VRHE). To examine the reasons, capacitance measurement and Mott-Schottky analysis were conducted, revealing that the significant degradation of capacitance value was observed in both BiVO4 film and Al2O3/Mo:BiVO4 film, probably due to degraded capacitance by surface passivation. Furthermore, the flat-band potential (VFB) was negatively shifted to about 200 mV while the electronic conductivities were enhanced by Al2O3 coating in both samples, contributing to the advancement of PEC performance by ultra-thin Al2O3 layer.

Monoclinic $VO_2(M)$ nanoparticles codoped with 1.5 at. % W and 2.9 at. % Mg were synthesized by the hydrothermal treatment and post-thermal transformation method of $V_2O_5-H_2C_2O_4-H_2O$ with $Na_2WO_4$ and $Mg(NO_3)_2$. The composite thin film of the W/Mg-codoped $VO_2(M)$ with a commercial acrylic block copolymer was also prepared on PET substrate by wet-coating method. The reversible phase transition characteristics of the codoped $VO_2(M)$ nanoparticles and the composite film were investigated from DSC, resistivity and Vis-NIR transmittance measurements compared with the undoped and Wdoped $VO_2(M)$ samples. Mg-codoping into W-doped $VO_2(M)$ nanoparticles synergistically enhanced the transition characteristics by increasing the sharpness of transition while the transition temperature ($T_c$) lowered by W-doping was maintained. The codoped composite film showed the prominently enhanced NIR switching efficiency compared to only W-doped $VO_2(M)$ film with a lowered $T_c$.
Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is a well-known material that undergoes insulator-to-metal phase transition near room temperature. Since the conductivity of VO2 changes several orders of magnitude in the terahertz (THz) spectral range during the phase transition, VO2-based active metamaterials have been extensively studied. Experimentally, it is reported that the metal nanostructures on the VO2 thin film lowers the critical temperature significantly compared to the bare film. Here, we theoretically studied such early transition phenomena by developing an analytical model. Unlike experimental work that only measures transmission, we calculate the reflection and absorption and demonstrate that the role of absorption is quite different for bare and patterned samples; the absorption gradually increases for bare film during the phase transition, while an absorption peak is observed at the critical temperature for the metamaterials. In addition, we also discuss the gap width and VO2 thickness effects on the transition temperatures.
In order to investigate the photo-electric property in $VO_2$ film grown by a sol-gel method, the currents generated by the light irradiation and nonirradiation were measured as functions of the bias voltage and the temperature. From the result, the generated current in the film changed with the light irradiation and nonirradiation, and it gradually increased with the bias voltage. In particular, the maximum current was generated at $50^{\circ}C$ under the light irradiation; the temperature is lower comparing the MIT (metal-insulator transition) temperature in $VO_2$. This result indicates that $VO_2$ shows the photo-voltaic effect, and so that, it is expected that the $VO_2$ film is applied for a photo-voltaic device.
We propose a band-switchable terahertz metamaterial based on an etched vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin film. A line of etched VO2 thin film was placed in the center gap of the split square-loop shape for the tunability of the metamaterial. The resonance frequency of the metamaterial can be switched from the 1.4 THz band to the 0.7 THz band, according to the insulator-metal phase transition in the VO2 thin film. The absolute difference in the transmittance of the metamaterial was 78.5% and 65.8% at 0.7 THz and 1.4 THz respectively, according to the band switching. The differential phase shift was around 90°, and the transmittance was stably maintained between 40% and 60% in the middle band of the two switchable resonance-frequency bands.

With a collimated $CO_2$ laser beam, the bidirectional current switching was realized in a two-terminal electronic device based on a highly resistive vanadium dioxide($VO_2$) thin film. A $VO_2$ thin film was grown on a $Al_2O_3$ substrate by a pulsed laser deposition method. For the fabrication of a two-terminal electronic device, the $VO_2$ thin film was etched by an ion beam-assisted milling method, and the $VO_2$ device, of which $VO_2$ patch width and electrode separation were 50 and $100{\mu}m$, respectively, was fabricated through a photolithographic method. A bias voltage range for stable bidirectional current switching was found by using the current-voltage property of the device measured in a current-controlled mode. The transient responses of bidirectionally switched currents were analyzed when the laser was modulated at a variety of pulse widths and repetition rates. A switching contrast was measured as ~3333, and rising and falling times were measured as ~39 and ~21ms, respectively.

Nb, Mo-doped and Nb/Mo-codoped $VO_2(M)$ nanocrystallites with various doping levels were synthesized for the first time by a hydrothermal and post thermal transformation method. The reversible phase transition characteristics of those doped $VO_2(M)$ was comparatively investigated. Nb-doping of $VO_2(M)$ by this method resulted in a very efficient lowering of the transition temperature ($T_c$) with a rate of $-16.7^{\circ}C/at.%$ that is comparable to W-doping, while Mo-doping did not give a serious reduction of $T_c$ with only a rate of $-5.1^{\circ}C/at.%$. Nb/Mo-codoping gave a similar result to Nb-doping without a noticeable difference. The thin films of Nb-doped and Nb/Mo-codoped $VO_2(M)$ with a thickness of ca. 120 nm were prepared by a wet-coating of the nanoparticle-dispersed solutions. Those films showed a good thermochromic modulation of near infrared radiation with 30-35% for Nb-doped $VO_2(M)$ and 37-40% for Nb/Mo-codoped ones. Nb/Mo-codoped $VO_2(M)$ film showed slightly enhanced thermochromic performance compared with Nb-doped $VO_2(M)$ film.

Vanadium dioxide ($VO_2$) is an attractive material for smart window applications where the transmittance of light can be automatically modulated from a transparent state to an opaque state at the critical temperature of ${\sim}68^{\circ}C$. Meanwhile, F : $SnO_2$ (F-doped $SnO_2$, FTO) glass is a transparent conductive oxide material that is widely used in solar-energy-related applications because of its excellent optical and electrical properties. Relatively high transmittance and low emissivity have been obtained for FTO-coated glasses. Tunable transmittance corresponding to ambient temperature and low emissivity can be expected from $VO_2$ films deposited onto FTO glasses. In this study, FTO glasses were applied for the deposition of $VO_2$ thin films by pulsed DC magnetron sputtering. $VO_2$ thin films were also deposited on a Pyrex substrate for comparison. To decrease the phase transition temperature of $VO_2$, tungsten-doped $VO_2$ films were also deposited onto FTO glasses. The visible transmittance of $VO_2$/FTO was higher than that of $VO_2$/pyrex due to the increased crystallinity of the $VO_2$ thin film deposited on FTO and decreased interface reflection. Although the solar transmittance modulation of $VO_2$/FTO was lower than that of $VO_2$/pyrex, room temperature solar transmittance of $VO_2$/FTO was lower than that of $VO_2$/pyrex, which is advantageous for reflecting solar heat energy in summer.
We propose an electrically controllable terahertz wave modulator based on a metamaterial and vanadium dioxide ($VO_2$) thin film. A square loop shape is designed to play the roles of both a resonating metamaterial and a heater to electrically control the conductivity of $VO_2$. The transmission characteristics of the modulator were controlled by voltage. The transmission coefficient of the modulator was stably changed from 0.27 to 0.80 at 470 GHz according to the conductivity values of $VO_2$.

Vanadium dioxide ($VO_2$) is a well-known material that exhibits a metal-semiconductor transition at 340 K, with drastic change of transmittance at NIR region. However, $VO_2$ based thermochromics accompany with low visible transmittance value and unfavorable color (brownish yellow). Herein, we demonstrate the adjustment of visible transmittance of $VO_2$ thin film by nanosphere template assisted patterning process using sol-gel method. 2-Dimenstional honeycomb shape was varied as function of diameter of nanosphere and coating conditions. The morphological geometry of the films was investigated by FE-SEM and AFM. Result shows that inversed shape of nanosphere was formed clearly and pattern width was altered according to the bead size. This structure creates the geometrical blank area from the position of nanosphere which improves the optical transmittance at the visible region. Moreover, such patterned $VO_2$ thin film not only maintains the optical switching efficiency, but also generate the gorgeous scattering effect which presumably support the glazing application.
