사용후핵연료의 전기화학적 금속전환을 위한 5kg $U_{3}O_{8}$ Batch 규모의 Mock-up 시험 (5kg $U_{3}O_{8}$ Batch Scale Mock-up Test for the Electrochemical Reduction of Spent Oxide Fuel)

  • 한국원자력연구소에서는 산화물 형태의 사용후핵연료를 용융염 매질에서 금속으로 전환함으로써 사용후핵연료의 발열량, 부피 및 방사능을 1/4로 감소시킬 수 있는 전기화학적 금속전환공정을 개발하고 g 규모(3-40g $U_{3}O_{8}$ batch)로 기초실험을 수행하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 전기화학적 금속전환 장치를 5kg $U_{3}O_{8}$ batch 규모로 설계 제작하고, 목표로 하고 있는 20kg $U_{3}O_{8}$ batch 규모 핫셀 실증을 위한 장치설계자료를 산출하기 위해 mock-up test를 수행하였다. 운전변수에 따른 $U_{3}O_{8}$의 전기화학적 환원거동을 규명하였으며, $U_{3}O_{8}$ 분말을 99% 이상 금속전환하여 전기화학적 금속전환공정의 타당성을 kg 규모로 검증할 수 있었다.

네오듐 고용 이산화우라늄의 고온 산화거동 (High Temperature Oxidation Behavior of Nd-doped $UO_2$)

  • $(U_{1-x}Nd_x)O_2$ 소결체를 $500^{\circ}C$에서 산화하여 얻은 $(U_{1-x}Ndx)_3O_8$ 분말의 상변화를 $900{\sim}1500^{\circ}C$의 공기 중에서 고온 산화 열처리를 하여 조사하였다. $1100^{\circ}C$ 이상의 온도로 산화 열처리할 경우에 Nd 농도가 높은 $(U_{1-y}Nd_y)O_{2+z}$ 상과 $U_3O_8$ 상이 생성됨을 확인하였으며, 산화 열처리 온도가 높아질수록 $(U_{1-y}Nd_y)O_{2+z}$ 상에서의 Nd 농도는 감소하였다. 산화 열처리 온도의 증가에 따라서 $U_3O_{8-w}$ 입자로부터 $(U_{1-y}Nd_y)O_{2+z}$ 입자로의 U 양이온 및 Nd 양이온이 두 입자의 계면을 통해 농도 구배에 따른 확산에 의해서 $(U_{1-y}Nd_y)O_{2+z}$ 상 내에 U의 농도는 증가하고 Nd의 농도는 감소하게 된다. 이러한 현상은 산화 열처리 온도증가에 따라서 $U_3O_8$ 상에 대한 $(U_{1-y}Nd_y)O_{2+z}$ 상의 X-선 회절피크의 적분강도비 증가와 $(U_{1-y}Nd_y)O_{2+z}$ 상의 입자가 커지는 것과 연관하여 해석할 수 있었다.

  • The effect of TiO$_2$ on the sintering behavior of mixed UO$_2$-U$_3$O$_{8}$ Powder compacts has been investigated using the U$_{3}$O$_{8}$ powder made tv oxidation of defective UO$_{2}$ pellets. Without TiO$_2$, UO$_2$ pellet density is inversely proportional to U$_3$O$_{8}$ content and is below 94 %TD in the U$_3$O$_{8}$ range above 15 wt%. Using more than 0.1 wt % TiO$_2$, however, the density decreases slightly with U$_3$O$_{8}$ content and thus is higher than about 94% TD in the whole range of U$_3$O$_{8}$ content. The grain sizes of UO$_2$ pellets with more than 0.1 wt % TiO$_2$are larger than about 30${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Therefore, the U$_3$O$_{8}$ Powder can be reused without any restriction on its amount in UO$_2$ pellet fabrication by sintering the mixed UO$_2$-U$_3$O$_{8}$ compact with the aid of TiO$_2$. Mechanisms for densification and grain growth are proposed and discussed, based on a dilatometry study and an examination of microstructure. microstructure.

RECYCLING PROCESS OF U3O8 POWDER IN MnO-Al2O3 DOPED LARGE GRAIN UO2 PELLETS

  • The effect of various process variables on the powder properties of recycled $U_3O_8$ from MnO-$Al_2O_3$ doped large grain $UO_2$ pellets and the effect of those recycled $U_3O_8$ powders on the sintered density and grain size of MnO-$Al_2O_3$ doped large grain $UO_2$ pellets have been investigated. The evolution of morphology, size, and BET surface area of the recycled $U_3O_8$ powders according to the respective variation of the thermo-mechanical treatment variables of oxidation temperature, powder milling, and sequential cyclic heat treatment of oxidation and then reduction was examined. The correlation between the BET surface area of recycled $U_3O_8$ powder and the sintered pellet properties of MnO-$Al_2O_3$ doped pellets showed that the pellet density and grain size of doped pellets were increased and then saturated by increasing the BET surface area of the recycled $U_3O_8$ powder. The density and grain size of the pellets were maximized when the BET surface area of the recycled $U_3O_8$ powder was in the vicinity of $3m^2/g$. Among the process variables applied in this study, the cyclic heat treatment followed by low temperature oxidation was a potential process combination to obtain the sinter-active $U_3O_8$ powder.

  • The changes of weight gain, structure, morphology and uranium oxidation states in l0wt% G $d_2$ $O_3$-doped U $O_2$ during the oxidation below 475$^{\circ}C$ and heat treatment at 130$0^{\circ}C$ in air were investigated using TGA, XRD, SEM, EPMA and XPS. The room temperature ( $U_{0.86}$G $d_{0.14}$) $O_2$Cubic Phase Converted to highly distorted ( $U_{0.86}$G $d_{0.14}$)$_3$ $O_{8}$ -type sing1e Phase by oxidation at 475 $^{\circ}C$ in air. This oxidized phase was reduced by annealing at 130$0^{\circ}C$ in air. The room temperature XRD pattern of the 130$0^{\circ}C$ annealed powder revealed that ( $U_{0.86}$G $d_{0.14}$)$_3$ $O_{8}$ -type single phase was separated into Gd-depleted $U_3$ $O_{8}$ and Gd-enriched ( $U_{0.7}$G $d_{0.3}$) $O_2$$_{+x}$ type cubic phase. The reduction and phase separation by the high temperature annealing of kinetically metastable and highly deformed ( $U_{0.86}$G $d_{0.14}$)$_3$ $O_{8}$ -type phase are interpreted in terms of cation size difference between G $d^3$$^{+}$ and U according to the oxidation state of U.U.U.U.U.te of U.U.U.U.U.

  • 산화물 형태의 사용후핵연료를 용융염에서 금속 형태로 전환하여, 발열량, 부피 및 방사능을 1/4로 감소시킬 수 있는 전기화학적 금속전환 공정을 개발하고, 5kg $U_3O_8$/Batch 규모의 mock-up 실험을 수행하였다. 본 연구에서는 전해 셀의 운전변수를 해석하였으며, 아울러 hot test를 위한 장치개발 연구도 병행하였다. 전기화학적 금속전환 공정을 이용하여 $U_3O_8$ 형태의 천연우라늄 분말을 99% 이상 금속전환할 수 있었으며, 또한 20kg $U_3O_8$/batch 규모 장치의 설계자료를 산출할 수 있었다.

유로퓸 고용(固溶) 우라늄산화물(酸化物)의 황화반응(黃化反應) 특성(特性) (Sulfurization Reaction Characteristics of Eu-doped Uranium Oxides)

  • 희토류산화물인 $Eu_2O_3$, 우라늄산화물인 $UO_2$$U_3O_8$, $Eu_2O_3$와 우라늄산화물의 혼합물에 대한 선택적 황화반응을 조사한 후에, $(U,Eu)O_2$$(U,Eu)_3O_8$와 같은 Eu 고용 우라늄산화물, Eu 고용 우라늄산화물의 고온 산화열처리 상분리 생성물인 Eu 농도가 높은 $(U,Eu)_4O_9$$U_3O_8$의 혼합상에 대한 황화반응 특성을 $400-800^{\circ}C$에서 조사하였다. $Eu_2O_3$ 및 우라늄산화물의 혼합물의 경우에는 $450^{\circ}C$에서 Eu와 우라늄 산화물간의 반응이 없이 $Eu_2O_3$$Eu_3S_4$로 전환되었다. $(U,Eu)_3O_8$$(U,Eu)O_2$에서는 반응온도 $600^{\circ}C$까지는 우라늄산화물과 동일한 황화반응 거동을 보였으며, $800^{\circ}C$에서는 Eu 농도가 높은 $(U,Eu)S_x$${\alpha}-US_2$ 상이 생성되었다. 고온 산화열처리 상분리 생성물은 $600^{\circ}C$에서 $(U,Eu)S_x$과 UOS 상이 생성되었다. 상분리 생성물을 환원하여 얻은 Eu 농도가 높은 $(U,Eu)O_2$$UO_2$의 혼합상은 $450^{\circ}C$에서 $(U,Eu)O_2$은 산황화물인 (U,Eu)OS로 전환되고 $UO_2$는 반응하지 않았다.

  • Ultrasound-assisted dissolution of U3O8 powder in carbonate solution was explored to determine if and how ultrasound act during the dissolution. The variation of U3O8 solid particles and uranyl complexes under ultrasound treatment and magnetic stirring was observed in carbonate media. The results show that the use of ultrasound can increase the solubility and dissolution rate of U3O8 powder than that under magnetic stirring. The crush of U3O8 particles and the reduction of the activation energy (Ea, kJ/mol) of U3O8 dissolution reaction were observed, which both play an important role in the ultrasonic-assisted dissolution of U3O8 in carbonate-peroxide solution. Meanwhile, there is no observation of the ultrasound effect on the distribution of uranyl species and hydrolysis of uranyl complexes during the ultrasound treatment in carbonate-peroxide solution. Although the generation of ·OH radicals under ultrasound (22 ± 2 kHz) was observed, the oxidation of ·OH had little effect on the dissolution of U3O8 in the carbonate-peroxide solution system.

The exploration of U(VI) concentration improvement in carbonate medium for alkaline reprocessing process

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the concentration of U(VI) in carbonate solution reasonably, which to improve the application potential of the alkaline reprocessing processes. The dissolution behavior of U3O8 in carbonate peroxide solutions was investigated under different conditions, including pH, carbonate concentration, and solid-liquid ratio. The results showed that the dissolution rate of U3O8 increased with the increase of pH from 8 to 11 in the mixed carbonate solution containing 0.5 mol/L H2O2. The role of carbonate ions in the dissolution of U3O8 was further elucidated by observing the dissolution of UO4⋅4H2O in carbonate solutions. Furthermore, the concentration of U(VI) in 3 mol/L Na2CO3 solution was successfully increased to 350 g/L under ultrasonic-assisted conditions at 60 ℃ and a solid-liquid ratio at 1/2 g/mL. Meanwhile, it is suggested that increasing the concentration of carbonate ions can improve the stability of the dissolved solution containing uranyl peroxycarbonate complex.

건식분말화 장치설계를 위한 $U_3O_8$ 분말의 미세입자 유동해석 (Analysis on the flow of $U_3O_8$ powder for design of the voloxidizer)

  • Voloxidizer for hot cell demonstration that handle spend fuel of high radiation virulence in limited space should become a small size and not scatter in its exit. This study determine optimum velocity of $U_3O_8$ using Newton-Raphson Method. We have conducted fortran programing on the Newton-Raphson Method, obtained a theory results and, predicted optimum velocity on the particle size distribution of $U_3O_8$. We have conducted experimentation using acrylic experimental device for verification of theory method, sampled and analyzed using the particle size analyzer In the results, we have found maximum $5\~7\%$ error rate in the comparative value of theory and experimentation. Optimum velocity and experimental results of $U_3O_8$ for scatter prevention have applied for design of demonstration voloxidizer, and produced operation condition of voloxidizer.
