  • A SAW strain sensor based on Shear Horizontal wave with an 92 MHz central frequency was developed. It consists of SAW sensor, PCB substrate and bonding material (Loctite 401). External force applied to PCB substrate bonded to a piezoelectric substrate induces strain at the substrate surface, which causes changes in the elastic constant and density of the substrate and hence the propagation velocity of the SAW. The change in the velocity of the SAW result in a frequency shift of the sensor and by measuring a frequency shift, we can extract the strain induced by the external force. The $41^{\circ}$ YX $LiNbO_3$ was used because it has a Leaky shear horizontal(SH) wave propagation mode and a high electromechanical coupling coefficient ($K^2$=17.2%). And to compare with Rayleigh wave mode, $128^{\circ}$ YX $LiNbO_3$ was used. And to make a stable and low insert loss, Split IDT structure was used. The obtained sensitivity and linearity of the SAW strain sensor in the case of Split IDT were measured to be 17.2 kHz / % and 0.99, respectively.

  • The CHIMPS2 survey is to extend the JCMT HARP $^{13}CO/C^{18}O$ J=3-2 Inner Milky-Way Plane Survey (CHIMPS) and the ${12}^CO$ J=3-2 survey (COHRS) into the inner Galactic Plane, the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ), and a section of the Outer Plane. When combined with the complementary $^{12}CO/^{13}CO/C^{18}O$ J=1-0 survey at the Nobeyama 45m (FUGIN) at matching 15" resolution and sensitivity, and other current CO surveys, the results will provide a complete set of transition data with which to calculate accurate column densities, gas temperatures and turbulent Mach numbers. These will be used to: analyze molecular cloud properties across a range of Galactic environments; map the star-formation efficiency (SFE) and dense-gas mass fraction (DGMF) in molecular gas as a function of position in the Galaxy and its relation to the nature of the turbulence within molecular clouds; determine Galactic structure as traced by molecular gas and star formation; constrain cloud-formation models; study the relationship of filaments to star formation; test current models of the gas kinematics and stability in the Galactic center region and the flow of gas from the disc. It will also provide an invaluable legacy data set for JCMT that will not be superseded for several decades. In this poster, we will present the current status of the CHIMPS2.

  • The effects of differential partial pressures of oxygen during sputtering on the magnetic and recording characteristics of magneto-optical disks were investigated. Different flows of oxygen were deliberately introduced into the sputtering chamber to have a variety of partial pressures of oxygen during sputtering. A residual gas analyzer was employed to monitor the oxygen peak before, during, and after sputtering and to estimate the reacted oxygen amount. Most of the oxygen introduced into the chamaber was reacted during sputtering. As the partial pressure of oxygen increased, the oxygen content of the TbFeCoCr film increased also. The oxygen appeared to be bound as Tb-O, effectively decreasing the magnetically active Tb content of the film The coercivity decreased but the squareness of the Kerr hysteresis loops was still excellent. The perpendicular anisotropy was not significantly affected by oxygen amount. The carrier-to-noise ratio, includi!1g the write power sensitivity and bias field sensitivity did not change too much with oxygen content in the film The disks sputtered with oxygen showed better bias field sensitivity with lower write power threshold than the disk sputtered without oxygen, due to high demagnetization during domain formation. No significant degradation of coercivity for the disk sputtered oxygen was observed during an accelerated aging test.

  • The objective of this study is to establish outcome validity for three instruments that assess whether subjects met recommendations for daily servings of fruits and vegetables for“Stage of Change”research. A convenience sample of 294 college students was recruited from introductory nutrition classes at Michigan State University in the United States. To measure servings of fruits and vegetables, separately, three types of methods (self-rated intake, 24-hour recall and food frequency) were used in comparison to the servings from a three-day food record, the criterion used. The outcome validity was assessed based on whether or not at least two servings of fruits and three servings of vegetables were reported. Validity was assessed by sensitivity, to measure the ability to detect low intakes, and by specificity, to measure ability to detect adequate intakes. Cohen's kappa was used as well to examine the agreement between the three methods and a three-day food record. The results showed, for fruits, the 24-hour recall had the best agreement (recall 0.54, self-rated : 0.31, food frequency : 0.29) with a three-day food record for servings consumed by people in pre-action or post-action stages. Sensitivity for fruit was also best using a recall (0.81). For vegetables, however, all three methods had low agreement (food frequency : 0.27, recall : 0.21, self-rated : 0.17) with the results of the three-day food record. Self-rated intakes for vegetables had the best sensitivity (0.66) and the food frequency had the best specificity (0.73). Therefore, researcher can use the 24-hour recall method to identify people who consume inadequate servings of fruit. To detect adequate vegetable intake, the food frequency was best of the three methods. Accuracy may be improved by probing for vegetables in mixed dishes and on sandwiches. • Bioluminescence of Photobacterium phosphoreum has been used for the detection of pollutants in the environment. Immobilization method was used to maintain the stability of bioluminescence of P. phosphoreum. The carboxymethylcellulose was investigated to find out whether it was suitable for the immobilization of P. phosphoreum as a matrix without disturbing the bioluminescence emission. A maintenance of bioluminescence was determined from the P. phosphoreum immobilized on the various concentrations of carboxymethylcellulose. A relatively high bioluminescence intensity was shown with immobilized cells on 1%(w/v) carboxymethylcellulose. The effect of carboxymethylcellulose concentrations on the sensitivity of Crcompounds including $Na_{2}CrO_{4}$, $K_{2}CrO_{4}$, $CrO_{3}$, CrK$(SO_4)_{2}$ and $CrCl_{3}$ to the bioluminescence intensity. The calculated $EC_{50}$ showed that the linear relations between such substances and bioluminesence intensity were established.

  • Silicon piezoresistive absolute pressure sensor for gas leakage alarm system was developed. This sensor must operate normally in the range of $0{\sim}600\;mmH_{2}O$ pressure, and $0{\sim}100^{\circ}C$ temperature. To make the most of this sensor for gas leakage alarm system, gas must not leak from the sensor itself when the diaphragm of the sensor fractures. Thus, the sealed diaphragm cavity was anodically bonded to pyrex 7740 glass under the condition of $10^{-4}$ torr, at $400^{\circ}C$. The sensitivity of developed sensor was $4.06{\mu}V/VmmH_{2}O$ for $600\;mmH_{2}O$ full-scale pressure range. And temperature compensation method of this sensor is to change bridge-in put-voltage linearly in proportion to the temperature variation by using diode(PXIN4001) or Al thin film resistor. By these methods the temperature effect in the range of $0{\sim}100^{\circ}C$ was compensated over 80 % for offset drift, 95 % for sensitivity.

  • Residues of neoasozine in rice grain were determined by neutron activation and colorimetric techniques. Twice application of the chemical before flowering did not lead to any increased residue level while 4-times application resulted in significant increase in the residue level up to 0.54-0.75 mg $As_2O_3/kg$. The partition ratio of arsenic residues into polished rice grain and bran was 73 : 27 in 100% polishing while most of the residues in the bran was transferred to oil cake fraction during solvent extraction, reaching up to 2.9 mg $As_2O_3/kg$. The neutron activation technique was advantageous because of its high sensitivity and the smaller sample amounts required for analysis.

  • A composite film of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/sol-gel-derived zinc oxide(ZnO)/Nafion has been utilized as an efficient immobilization matrix for the construction of a highly sensitive and stable tris(2,2'-bipyridyl) ruthenium(II) (Ru(${bpy)_3}^{2+})$ electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) sensor. The electrochemical and ECL behaviors of Ru(${bpy)_3}^{2+})$ ion-exchanged into the composite film were strongly dependent upon the sol-gel preparation condition, the amount of MWCNT incorporated into the ZnO/Nafion composite film, and the buffer solution pH. The synergistic effect of MWCNTs and ZnO in the composite films increased not only the sensitivity but also the long-term stability of the ECL sensor. The present ECL sensor based on the MWCNT/ZnO/Nafion gave a linear response ($R^2$ = 0.999) for tripropylamine concentration from 500 nM to 1.0 mM with a remarkable detection limit (S/N = 3) of 15 nM. The present ECL sensor showed outstanding long-term stability (94% initial signal retained for 5 weeks). Since the present ECL sensor exhibits large response towards NADH, it could be applied as a transduction platform for the ECL biosensor in which the NADH is produced from the dehydrogenase-based enzymatic reaction in the presence of NA$D^+$ cofactor.

  • The switching characteristics of magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) comprising amorphous ferromagnetic CoFeSiB free layer have been investigated. CoFeSiB was used for the free layer to enhance the switching characteristics. The typical junction structure was $Si/SiO_{2}/Ta$ 45/Ru 9.5/IrMn 10/CoFe $7/AlO_{x}/CoFeSiB\;(t)/Ru\;60\;(in\;nm)$. CoFeSiB has low saturation magnetization ($M_{s}$) of $560\;emu/cm^{3}$ and high anisotropy constant ($K_{u}$) of $2800\;erg/cm^{3}$. These properties caused low coercivity ($H_{c}$) and high sensitivity in MTJs, and it also confirmed in submicrometer-sized elements by micromagnetic simulation based on the Landau-Lisfschitz-Gilbert equation. By increasing CoFeSiB free layer thickness, the switching characteristics became worse due to increase of the demagnetization field.

  • Conventional molecular detection methods cannot distinguish between viable and dead Escherichia coli O157 cells. In this study, the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method combined with propidium monoazide (PMA) treatment was developed to selectively detect viable E. coli O157 cells. Four primers, including outer primers and inner primers, were specially designed for the recognition of six distinct sequences on the serogroups (O157) of the specific rfbE gene of the E. coli O157 genome. PMA selectively penetrated through the compromised cell membranes and intercalated into DNA. Amplification of DNA from dead cells was completely inhibited by $3.0{\mu}g/ml$ PMA, whereas the DNA derived from viable cells was amplified remarkably within 1 h by PMA-LAMP. Exhibiting high sensitivity and specificity, PMA-LAMP is a suitable method for evaluating the inactivation efficacy of slightly acidic electrolyzed water in broth. PMA-LAMP can selectively detect viable E. coli O157 cells. This study offers a novel molecular detection method to distinguish between viable and dead E. coli O157 cells.
