  • The influence of acidity in MTT zeolite of different Si/Al molar ratio's on the catalyst activity in methanol-to-olefin (MTO) reaction has been investigated. The Si/Al ratio was controlled with the Al content in the gel when N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-1,3-diaminopropane was used as a structure directing agent (SDA). The gel composition was controlled to $20SiO_2$ : 30SDA : x (=0.25~1.25)$NaAlO_2$ : 2NaOH : $624H_2O$, which was subject to the hydrothermal synthesis at 433 K for 4 days. As the composition of sodium aluminate decreased, the particle size of MTT zeolite increased, and also the amount of acid sites decreased. To investigate the catalytic performance, MTO reaction was carried out at 673 K with $1.2h^{-1}$ WHSV. It was found that the H-MTT (1.00Al) catalyst with a Si/Al molar ratio of 24 maintained the methanol conversion over 90% for 900 min.

  • In order to solve problems caused by the heat load of hypersonic aircraft, this study examined the optimization of the Si/Al ratio of the catalyst and nickel ion exchange to improve the performance of the hydrocarbon decomposition reaction (endothermic reaction). It was confirmed that the catalysts prepared through Si/Al ratio optimization and nickel ion exchange showed about 10% improvement in heat absorption performance compared to thermal cracking at 4 MPa and 550 ℃. FT-IR and NH3-TPD analyses were found to identify factors affecting activity changes, and it was observed that the Si/Al ratio of the HZSM-5 catalyst was closely correlated with acid site development and catalytic activity. In addition, TGA and O2-TPO analyses were conducted to observe the carbon deposition inhibition properties of the nickel-added catalyst.

  • In this study, the application of recovered metals from spent batteries by extraction was investigated for ozone decomposition as a catalyst. Among the recovered metals, Mn contents was the most important factor for ozone decomposition. It was also found that the deactivation rate of the catalyst was dependent on the Zn contents, while K contents and activities were not perfectly correlated for ozone decomposition. In addition, the catalytic activity the $TiO_2$ added catalyst was decreased, due to the reduction of Mn contents. The structural characteristics of maganase oxide was not associated with the catalytic activity for ozone decomposition.

  • Catalytic activity in ammonia decomposition reaction was studied on Mo-Al nitride obtained through temperature programmed nitridation of calcined Mo-Al mixed oxide prepared by varying the MoO3 quantity in the range of 10-50 wt%. N2 sorption analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and H2-temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to investigate the physicochemical properties of the prepared catalyst were performed. After calcination at 600 ℃, the XRD of Mo-Al oxide showed γ-Al2O3 and Al2(MoO4)3 phases, and the nitride after nitridation showed an amorphous form. The specific surface area after nitridation by topotactic transformation of MoO3 to nitride was increased due to the formation of Mo nitride, and the Mo nitride was observed to be supported on γ-Al2O3. As for the catalytic activity in the ammonia decomposition reaction, 40 wt% MoO3 showed the best activity, and as the nitridation time increases, the activity increased, and thus the activation energy decreased.

  • In the catalytic hydrolysis of 2',3'-cAMP by the Cu(II) complexes of 2,9-(N,N-dimethylethylenediamino)-1,10-phenanthroline (A) and 2,9-(N,N-dimethylethylenediaminomethyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (B) that are designed as a new ligand molecule of artificial DNase, due to the four intramolecular H-bonds forming between amino groups of ligand molecule and phosphoryl group of 2',3'-cAMP. It is anticipated that Cu(II) complexes of (A) and (B) are able to promote a rate that is as much as seventy thousand times faster than the catalytic hydrolysis rate of 2',3'-cAMP by Cu(II) complexes of 2,9-dimethyl-o-phenanthroline.

  • Reduction activity of precious metal-loaded HZSM-5 for NO has been studied and was compared to that of Cu-HZSM-5 in the presence of excess oxygen. It was found that among the catalysts used in this study, Ru-HZSM-5 was the most active catalyst for the reduction of NO to $N_2$ in the absence of hydrocarbon reductant. The highest conversion obtained was 45%. No severe inhibition of water vapor to the reduction was observed. It is suggested that the higher catalytic activity of Ru-HZSM-5 may result from the better ability to oxidize NO to $NO_2$ in the presence of excess oxygen. A proposed reaction mechanism for the reduction of NO to $N_2$ in the presence of excess oxygen is that NO is oxidized to $NO_2$ on the surface of Ru-HZSM-5 catalyst and the adsorbed $NO_2$ on the surface is then decomposed to $N_2$. $NO_2$ is supposed to the reaction.

  • Some supported gold catalysts were prepared by impregnation and coprecipitation methods. Effect of gold addition and active sloe formation were studied by investigating particle sizes of gold, amounts of oxygen adsorbed, adsorption properties of CO and NO, and reduction and oxidation properties, etc.. The gold particles of the catalyst by impregnation were irregular and very large as 30~100 nm, but those by coprecipitation were uniform and ultra-fine as about 4 nm. On $Au/Al_2O_3$ catalyst, the addition of gold to inactive $Al_2O_3$ caused the decomposition of $N_2O$, and CO was not irreversibly adsorbed while $O_2$ was atomically and irreversibly adsorbed. The adsorption sites of oxygen were attributed to the active sites which were restricted to the circumference of hemispherical gold particle-support interface rather than all atoms on the surface of gold particle. Also, CO was reversibly and irreversibly adsorbed on $Al_2O_3$ at low temperature, and the addition of gold weakened both reversible and irreversible adsorptions. The affinity for CO on $Au/Co_3O_4$ catalyst decreased conspicuously compared to $Co_3O_4$. The effect of gold addition did not appear in reduction step but did remarkably in reoxidation step; the added gold promoted the reoxidation of the reduced cobalt atoms.

  • We synthesized phase pure CrN having surface areas up to $47m^2/g$ starting from $CrCl_{3}$ with $NH_{3}$. Thermal Gravimetric Analysis coupled with X-ray diffraction was carried out to identify solid state transition temperatures and the phase after each transition. In addition, the BET surface areas, pore size distributions, and crystalline diameters for the synthesized materials were analyzed. Space velocity influenced a little to the surface areas of the prepared materials, while heating rate did not. We believe it is due to the fast removal of reaction by-products from the system. Temperature programmed reduction results revealed that the CrN was hardly passivated by 1% $O_{2}$. Molecular nitrogen was detected from CrN at 700 and $950^{\circ}C$, which may be from lattice nitrogen. In temperature programmed oxidation with heating rate of 10 K/min in flowing air, oxidation started at or higher than $300^{\circ}C$ and resulting $Cr_{2}O_{3}$ phase was observed with XRD at around $800^{\circ}C$. However the oxidation was not completed even at $900^{\circ}C$. CrN catalysts were highly active for n-butane dehydrogenation reaction. Their activity is even higher than that of a commercial $Pt-Sn/Al_{2}O_{3}$ dehydrogenation catalyst in terms of volumetric reaction rate. However, CrN was not active in pyridine hydrodenitrogenation.

  • High test hydrogen peroxide has been widely developed as green propellant for thrusters. Hydrogen peroxide is decomposed in the catalyst bed to produce the thrust. Catalyst bed design optimization is considered through existing model for catalyst beds. To verify the model, static firing tests were conducted under various conditions using a 100 N scale $H_2O_2$ monopropellant thruster. Temperature and pressure estimations from the model were well correlated to the experimental data. The model is used to obtain optimal design parameters by analyzing the catalyst capacity and pressure drop data for various simulated conditions. Catalyst beds can be optimized from the analysis of the catalyst capacity and pressure drop correlation through catalyst bed modeling.

  • The photocatalytic activity of TiO$_2$ was investigated as a function of added amount of Nb$_2$O$_{5}$, heat treatment temperature and the decomposition rate of 1 mM dichloroacetic acid(DCA). Mixed oxides of TiO$_2$ and Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ was prepared by the sol-gel process. The addition of Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ into TiO$_2$ has deleterious effect on the decomposition rate of DCA, which was decreased as the amount of Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ was increased. The excess electrons due to the doping of Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ into TiO$_2$ can promote the reduction process instead of oxidation or recombination rate with electron holes. The most efficient photocatalyst was the one heat treated at 40$0^{\circ}C$ for an hour as far as the heat treatment temperature is concerned. The lower the pH of the solution, the higher the quantum yield.tum yield.
