Korean acid clays and Japanese acid clay were 1 N KCl solution and then their acidities were determined by measuring pH of the filtrates produced. And on examining the effect of neutral salt solution, such as KCl, NaCl, $BaCl_2,\;Pb(NO_3)_2\;and\;CuSO_4$, on the acidity, it was found that the effect decreased in order mentioned above and this situation proved to be in accord with Lyotrope series, i.e., the order of $K^+>Na^+>Ba^{++}>Pb^{++}>Cu^{++}.$ And after adsorbing cation, $Al_2O_3\;and\;Fe_2O_3$ which dissolved out of acid clay were measured, with the result that the amounts dissolved out were nearly proportional to acidity. This result accords with Kobayashi and Yamamoto's theory that the cause for acidity of clays is due to the fact that HCl which is formed initially by exchange of cation reacts with solid clay, and then chlorides dissolved out bring about hydrolysis, then resulting in the second formation of HCl. On measuring the rate which acid clay adsorbed dye in aqueous solution of basic and acid dyes, it was found that acid dye had no relation to acidity, and though it was not adsorbed by acid clay, the adsorption rate of basic dye was proportional to acidity. After adsorbing basic dye, pH was proportional to both acidity of solid acid and its adsorption rate of dye. Hence, it was concluded that the adsorption of basic dye was in accord with adsorption mechanism of neutral salt. This study led to find the acidic cause of solid acid and its adsorption mechanism of dye in aqueous solution.
Synthesis of Iron oxides by air oxidation of $FeSO_4$ solutions in the presence of NaOH, Diethylenetriamine (DETA), Butylamine (BA) and influence of ultrasonic wave were investigated by XRD, SEM and particle size analyzer. As the DETA addition increased to 0.05 mol, $Fe_3O_4$ was formed with goethite($\alpha$- FeOOH) and $Fe_3O_4$ single phase was formed above 0.18mol of DETA. As the BA addition increased, the XRD peak intensity of (020) face of lepidocrocite($\gamma$-FeOOH) was developed until the formation of $Fe_3O_4$ and reduced the size of the iron oxide particles formed. Ultrasonic wave reduced the size of the iron oxide particles but gave little effects on the iron oxide particles synthesized by amine.

In order to develop an efficient, reliable and reproducible tissue culture system for reed (Phragmites communis Trinius), an efficient plant regeneration system via callus induction was established using mature seeds as explants. MS medium containing 1 mg/L 2,4-D and 0.5 mg/L BA was optimal for callus induction from mature seeds. The highest frequency (88.7%) of callus formation was obtained in 1.0 mg/L 2,4-D. The highest plant regeneration frequency (59.6%) was found when the embryogenic calli were subcultured on MS medium supplemented with 100 mg/L myo-inositol, whereas, adding of plant growth regulators was not so promising in this case. Our result would be useful for development of transgenic reed plants.
A raw starch saccharifying enzyme from Aspergillus sp. SN-871 was purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation, DEAE-cellulose column chromatography, CM-Sephadex C-50 column chromatography and Sephadex G-75 gel filtration. The specific activity of purified enzyme was 18 fold and the yeild was 13.40%. The molecular weight of the purified enzyme was estimated as approximately 40,000 dalton by the method of Andrews gel filtration. The optimum pH and temperature for this enzyme were found to be 4 and $40^{\circ}C$, respectively and the stable range of pH was 2 to 5. The enzyme was themostable at below $60^{\circ}C$ and inactivated at $70^{\circ}C$. It showed a tendency to increase the enzyme activity under the presence of 0.01 M $BaCl_2$, but under 0.01 M$Pb(NO_3)_2$, $AgSO_4$, and $K_3Fe(CN)_6$ and citric acid etc. inhibited it completely. The substrate specifity of enzyme showed a tendency to increase the enzyme activity under addition of dextrin and glycogen, but under saccharose inhibited it. COD removal rate of Aspergillus sp. SN-871 was approximately 67 to 68%.
The oxidation studies of a sulfur to a sulfate ion by various oxyhalide oxidants in organic (thiourea, methionine) and inorganic (sulfate, thiophosphate) compounds were carried out in an acidic solution. The optimized result of the oxidation reaction was obtained when a bromate compound (${BrO_3}^-$) as an oxidant and a 3 M $HNO_3$ solvent were used. The chemical yield for the oxidation of the organic and inorganic sulfur compounds to a sulfate ion was monitored as 80% for thiophosphate, 87% for methionine, and 100% for thiourea and sulfate within 5% RSD. The oxidations of thiourea required at least 1.6 equivalents of the bromate in an acidic solution. In the case of the oxidation of methionine and thiophosphate, the oxidation yields were above 80% if the bromate was used at 20 times higher than that of the substrates. The sulfate ion was quantitatively measured by using a GPC counting of $^{35}S$ followed by precipitates of $BaSO_4$. A quenching correction curve for the $^{35}S$ counting was obtained to use the difference via the precipitate weight result.
Eighty one bacterial strains of parathion degrading bacteria were isolated from soil samples that were contaminated with pesticide in Daejeon area. Among them, one bacterial strain was finally selected in media containing parathion as the sole source of carbon and energy, and this strain was identified as Pseudomonas rhodesiae H5 through physiological and biochemical tests, and analysis of its 16S rRNA sequence. Pseudomonas rhodesiae H5 was able to utilize various carbohydrates but did not utilize sorbose as sole carbon source. Pseudomonas rhodesiae H5 was resistance to ampicillin, spectinomycin, and mitomycin C but sensitive to kanamycin and chloramphenicol. And this strain showed high resistance up to several milligrams of heavy metals such as $BaCl_2$, LiCl, and $MnSO_4$. Optimal growth condition for temperature and pH of P. rhodesiae H5 was 3$0^{\circ}C$, and pH 7.0, respectively. It can be presumed that P. rhodesiae H5 hydrolyzed an organophosphate bond of parathion, forming p-nitrophenol, and then metabolized via ortho-ring cleavage mechanism.

Poly(vinyl pivalate) (PVPi) was bulk polymerized to make poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) microfibrils to apply for polymeric embolization coils replacing metalic coils. Then, syndiotactic PVA (s-PVA) microfibrils having number-average degree of polymerization of 1100 and s-diad content of 60.4% were prepared via saponification of the PVPi with no separate spinning process. To make s-PVA microfibrils with radiopacity, zirconium dioxide ($ZrO_2$) and barium sulfate ($BaSO_4$) were added into s-PVA microfibrils during saponification. The computed tomography (CT) value indicating radiopacity reached up to over 1000 when the amount of $ZrO_2$ and $BaSO_4$ were 12 and 6 wt%, respectively.
The dielectric and pyroelectric properties of $Ba_{0.66}$$Sr_{0.38}$$TiO_{3}$(BST) thin films growtn on Pt/Ti/NON/Si us-ing RF magnetron sputtering have been investigated. With increasing the substrate temperature during de-position of the BST film in the range of 300-$600^{\circ}C$ the dielectric and pyroelectric constants of the film were increased due to improved crystallinity of the film. In addition the dependence of the microstructural and electrical properties of BST films onthe deposition temperature of the bottom Pt electrode was studied. The preferred orientation of the BST films as well as the microstructure of the Pt film was greatly in-fluenced by the deposition temperature of the bottom Pt electrode was studied. The preferred orientation of the BSt films as well as the microstructure of the Pt film was greatly in-fluenced by the deposition temperature of the bottom Pt electrodes. and thus so were the pyrolelectric pro-perties of the BST film. The highest value of pyroelectric coefficient at room temperature obtained in this work was $nCcm^{-2}K^{-1}$ which is much higher than those previously reported on other perovskite fer-roelectric thin films.
A Carboxymethyl Cellulase (CMCase) has been isolated and purified from the edible mushroom, Stropharia rugosoannulata. The molecular weight of CMCase was estimated to be 54 kDa by SDS polyacryl amide gel electrophoresis. The maximum activity of the purified CMCase was observed at pH 4.0 and $40^{\circ}C$, and stable for pH 3.0 to 11.0 to maintain 40% activity. The CMCase activity was activated by $AgNO_{3},\;MgSO_{4},\;and\;KCl$. However, its activity was inhibited by 1,10-phenanthroline, KCN and L-cysteine. Also, the enzyme activity was decreased by the addition of EDTA, suggesting that the purified CMCase is metalloenzyme.
To obtain multi-shoot using zygotic embryos dissected from ginseng seed, the embryos were cultured on MS medium supplemented with CPA and BA. Effective multi-shoot induction was achieved on 0.5mg/ t CPA and 1.0mg/ t BA treatment. Among the various plant growth regulator treatment, MS basal medium with 1mg/ t 2,4-D and 0.5mg/ t kinetin was more competent and could be induced 4∼6 shoots per one embryo. Also, the best condition for pre-embryoid induction from ginseng cotyledon so as to ginseng transformation appeared to 1mg/ t 2,4-D and 0.5mg/ t kinetin treatment. The kanamycin level to select transformants varied greatly by different explant tyues. The petiole explants with leaf and embryo could survived up to 100$\mu\textrm{g}$ / ml kanamycin concentration where as petiole explants without leaf died all at the level. Conclusionally, our results suggest that optimum kanamycin concentration for ginseng transformation using somatic embryos is about 75∼100$\mu\textrm{g}$ / ml concentration.
