  • Detailed information about the structural nature of three-coordinate borons in ${\beta}-BaB_2O_4$ is obtained through $^{11}B$ MAS NMR and $^{11}B$ single-crystal NMR. The three-coordinate $BO_3$ of the two borons B(1) and B(2) in ${\beta}-BaB_2O_4$ were distinguished. The spin-lattice relaxation time in the laboratory frame $T_1$ for B(1) and B(2) slowly decreases with increasing temperature, whereas the spin-lattice relaxation time in the rotating frame $T_{1{\rho}}$ for B(1) and B(2), which differs from $T_1$, is nearly constant. The B(1) and B(2) of the two types were distinguished by $^{11}B$ MAS NMR and $^{11}B$ single-crystal NMR.

  • [ $^{11}B$ ] nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements were performed on the single crystals of $TbB_4$ to investigate local electronic structure and 4f spin dynamics. $^{11}B$ NMR spectrum, Knight shift, spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation rates were measured down to 4K at 8T. $^{11}B$ NMR shift and linewidth are huge and strongly temperature dependent due to the 4f moments. In addition, both are proportional to magnetic susceptibility, indicating that the hyperfine field at the boron site originates from the 4f spins of Tb. Below $T_N$, the single broad resonance peak of $^{11}B$ NMR splits into several peaks reflecting the local magnetic fields due to antiferromagnetic spin arrangements. The longitudinal and the transverse relaxation rates, $1/T_1\;and\;1/T_2$, independent of temperature above $T_N$, decreases tremendously confirming huge suppression of spin fluctuation below $T_N$.

  • The structural characteristics of 4-coordinate $BO_4$ [B(1)] and 3-coordinate $BO_3$ [B(2)] groups in $BiB_3O_6$ were studied by $^{11}B$ magic angle spinning (MAS) and single-crystal nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The spin-lattice relaxation time in the laboratory frame, $T_1$, for $^{11}B$ decreased slowly with increasing temperature, whereas the spin-lattice relaxation times in the rotating frame, $T_{1{\rho}}$, for B(1) and B(2), which differed from $T_1$, were nearly constant. Further, $T_{1{\rho}}$ for B(1) and B(2) showed very similar trends, although the $T_{1{\rho}}$ value of B(2) was shorter than that of B(1). The 3-coordinate $BO_3$ and 4-coordinate $BO_4$ were distinguished by $^{11}B$ MAS NMR spectrum and $T_{1{\rho}}$.

  • $^{11}$B NMR measurements have been performed to investigate local electronic structure and 4f spin dynamics for TbNi$_2$B$_2$C single crystal. $^{11}$B NMR spectra show three resonance peaks due to the quadrupolar interaction. Shift and linewidth are huge and strongly temperature-dependent. In addition, both are proportional to magnetic susceptibility, indicating that the hyperfine field at the boron site originates from the 4f spins of Tb. $^{11}$B NMR shift and relaxation rates show high anisotropy for field parallel and perpendicular to the c-axis. Anisotropy of the shift and the relaxation rates suggests that the hyperfine field perpendicular to the c-axis is larger.

  • In this work, we applied the 1D 11B nutation NMR method for the analysis of the local structural environments in powdered borosilicates (SiO2-B2O3). Spin dynamics during a rf irradiation for spin I=3/2 was analytically calculated with a density matrix formalism. Spectral simulation programs were written in MATLAB on a PC. Two borosilicates prepared by the sol-gel process at different stabilization temperature were used for the 1D 11B nutation NMR experiment. The 11B NMR parameters, quadrupole coupling constants (e2qQ/h) and asymmetry parameters (η), for each borosilicate were extracted from the nonlinear least-squares fitting. The effects of heat treatments on the local structures of boron sites in borosilicates were discussed.

  • We have performed $^{11}$ B nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements to microscopically investigate an electronic structure of the ferromagnetic state in three different compositions of calcium-hexaboride single crystals. Although the crystal structure of Ca $B_{6}$ is cubic and three NMR lines may be expected for the nuclear spin 3/2 of $_{11}$ B, a larger number of NMR resonance peaks have been observed. The frequency and intensity of those peaks distinctively changes depending on the angle between crystalline axis and magnetic field. Analyzing this behavior, we find that the electric field gradient(EFG) tensor at the boron has its principal axis perpendicular to the six cubic faces with a quadrupole resonance frequency $v_{Q}$ 600 kHz. Even though the magnetization data highlight the ferromagnetic hysteresis, $^{11}$ B NMR linewidth data show no clear microscopic evidence of the ferromagnetic state in three different compositions of Ca $B_{6}$ single crystals.s.

  • $^{11}B$ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements have been performed to investigate electronic structures and vortex states of $M_gB_2$ superconductor. The central transition shows a narrow peak down to 25 K at 3.15 T. Below 25 K, an extra line starts to show up and dominates. The extra line is broad and asymmetric with a long tail in the high frequency side, which confirms that this originates from vortex pinning below the irreversibility temperature. From temperature evolution of the fraction and linewidth of the broad portion, temperature dependence of coherence length and penetration depth are extracted.

  • Understanding the effect of boron content on atomic structures of boron-bearing multicomponent silicate melts is essential to reveal the atomistic origins of diverse geochemical processes involving silica-rich magmas, such as explosive volcanic eruption. The detailed atomic environments around B and Al in boron-bearing complex aluminosilicate glasses yield atomistic insights into reactivity of nuclear waste glasses in contact with aqueous solutions. We report experimental results on the effect of boron content on the atomic structures of sodium borate glasses and boron-bearing multicomponent silicate melts [malinkoite ($NaBSiO_4$)-nepheline ($NaAlSiO_4$) pseudo-binary glasses] using the high-resolution solid-state NMR ($^{11}B$ and $^{27}Al$). The $^{11}B$ MAS NMR spectra of sodium borate glasses show that three-coodrinated boron ($^{[3]}B$) increases with increasing $B_2O_3$ content. While the spectra imply that the fraction of non-ring species decreases with decreasing boron content, peak position of the species is expected to vary with Na content. Therefore, the quantitative estimation of the fractions of the ring/non-ring species remains to be explored. The $^{11}B$ MAS NMR spectra of the glasses in the malinkoite-nepheline join show that four-coordinated boron ($^{[4]}B$) increases as $X_{Ma}$ [$=NaBSiO_4/(NaBSiO_4+NaAlSiO_4)$] increases while $^{[3]}B$ decreases. $^{27}Al$ MAS NMR spectra of the multicomponent glasses confirm that four-coordinated aluminum ($^{[4]}Al$) is dominant. It is also observed that a drastic decrease in the peak widths (full-width at half-maximum, FWHM) of $^{[4]}Al$ with an addition of boron ($X_{Ma}=0.25$) in nepheline glasses. This indicates a decrease in structural and topological disorder around $^{[4]}Al$ in the glasses with increasing boron content. The quantitative atomic environments around boron of both binary and multicomponent glasses were estimated from the simulation results of $^{11}B$ MAS NMR spectra, revealing complex-nonlinear variation of boron topology with varying composition. The current results can be potentially used to account for the structural origins of the change in macroscopic properties of boron-bearing oxide melts with varying boron content.

  • The unique features of HTS offer Opportunities and challenges to a number of applications. In this paper we focus on NMR and MRI magnets, illustrating them with the NMR/MRI magnets that we are currently and will shortly be engaged: a 1.3GHz NMR magnet, an "annulus" magnet, and an $MgB_2$ whole-body MRI magnet. The opportunities with HTS include: 1) high fields (e.g., 1.3GHz magnet); 2) compactness (annulus magnet); and 3) enhanced stability despite liquid-helium-free operation ($MgB_2$ whole-body MRI magnet). The challenges include: 1) a large screening current Beld detrimental to spatial field homogeneity (e.g., 1.3 GHz magnet); 2) uniformity of critical current density (annulus magnet); and 3) superconducting joints ($MgB_2$ magnet).
