The water extracts of Samul-tang(SMT) has been used for treatment of ischemic brain damage in Oriental traditional medicine. However, little is known about the mechanism by which the water extracts of SMT rescues brain cells from ischemic damages. To elucidate the protective mechanism on ischemic induced cytotoxicity, I investigate the regulation of LPS and PMA induced iNOS expression in C6 glial cells. LPS and PMA treatment for 72 h in C6 glial cells markedly induce nitric oxide(NO), but treatment of the cells with the water extracts of SMT decrease. dose dependently nitrite formation. In addition, LPS and PMA treatment for 72 h induce severe cell death and LDH release in C6 glial cells. However treatment of the cells with the water extracts of SMT dose not induce significant changes compare to control cells. Furthermore, the protective effects of the water extracts of SMT is mimicked by treatment of $N^{G}MMA$, a specific inhibitor of NOS. LPS and PMA induced iNOS activation in C6 glial cells cause chromosomal condensation and fragmentation of nuclei by caspase activation. The treatment of the cells with the water extracts of SMT may suppress apoptosis via caspase inhibition by regulation of iNOS expression. Taken together, I suggest that the protective effects of the water extracts of SMT against ischemic brain damages may be mediated by regulation of iNOS during ischemic condition.

CHN was actually caused by the aristolochic acid contained in some Herb medicines. Aristolochia manshuriensis, Aristolochia fang chi, which is the substitutions of Akebia quinata, Stephania tetrandra has being used in clinical. Aristolochia manshuriensis. Aristolochia fang chi were different with Akebia quinata. Stephania tetrandra in botany, and it have not been classified with medicines in Oriental medicine, That is, the aristolochic acid, not Herb medicines. causes CHN, So, Chinese Herb Nephropathy should be changed to Aristolochic acid Nephropathy.

Purpose : Intravascular Laser Irradiation on Blood(ILlB) therapy has been usedto various circulatory diseases recently. In this study, we sought to find out the effects of ILIB on hyperlipidemia . Material and Methods : In this study of 163 patients with hyperlipidemia , we observed change of total cholesterol and triglyceride in serum after ILIB therapy. Results and Conclusion : In patients with hyperlipidemia , total cholesterol mean values decreased from $240.04{\pm}56.23$mg/dL to $214.90{\pm}45.84$mg/dL and triglyceride mean values decreased from $304.98{\pm}134.37$mg/dL to $244.05{\pm}120.46$mg/dL, after ILIB thetapy. We evaluated that ILIB therapy reduced total cholesterol and triglyceride (p<0.001) in patients with hyperlipidemia and IUB therapy is more effective to patients with hyperlipidemia than normal(p<0.001).

Objective : In order to know the antibacterial effects of Kyungok-go against Mycobacteria tuberculosis, Methods : In this study, I inverstigated these effects in terms of combination of other antibiotics with and without Kyungok-go on several different media conditions. Results: On Ogawa medium, Kyungok-go of the $10{\mu}/ml$ concentration showed the anti-Mycobacteria tuberculosis activity against antibiotic drug-sensitive strain. On Middle-blue medium, Kyungok-go of the $10{\mu}/ml$ concentration showed the anti-Mycobacteria tuberculosis activity against antibiotic drug-sensitive strain. Kyungok-go showed the anti mycobacteria tuberculosis activity with the meaningful result above a certain concentration. The resistance against M, tuberculosis as the concentration of Kyungok-go was decreased significantlly on the high concentration($500{\mu}/ml$) When rifampicin and Kyungok-go were used together, the resistance was decreased with the statistical significance as to the persistant antibacterial effect against M. tuberculosis, When ciprofloxacin and Kyungok-go were used together, the resistance was decreased with the statistical significance as to the persistant antibacterial effect against M. tuberculosis, The combination of treatment, Kyungok-go with both rifampicin and ciprofloxacin, showed much better antibacterial effect against M, tuberculosis than antibiotics alone. Conclusions : This study shows that Kyungok-go has antibacterial effect against M. tuberculosis and in the combination of treatment, Kyungok-go with antibiotics, showed much better antibacterial effect against M. tuberculosis than antibiotics alone,.

Objective : This research was carried out to find out the general understanding of allergic diseases, the frequencies of allergic diseases and the attitude toward their oriental medical treatment(OMT) among common people. Methods : A total of 360 visitors at The 2nd International Exhibition on Oriental Medicine in 2000, participated in this research. We performed this survey with 22 items on the questionnaire. Results : Respondents knew the. fact that the allergic diseases were hereditary and could be affected by the living environment. 41.8% of the respondents had a past history of allergic diseases. Among the people who had allergic diseases, 63.5% had allergic rhinitis, which was the largest portion. Among them, 52.9% had a familial history. 81.5% of respondents with allergic diseases received western medical treatment for their allergies, 16.3% received both western and oriental medical treatment and 2.2% received OMT only. Among those who were treated for allergic disease, 62.0% were unsatisfied with the low effect of the treatment. To the point of excellence of OMT, 69.7%, which was the largest portion of respondents, believed that OMT could improve their constitutions. The problem with OMT was the high price of herbal medicine and this was the problem most frequently stated, by 51.4% of respondents. There was a positive attitude towards the effect of OMT, and respondents had a preference to receive OMT in the future(p<0.01). Conclusions : These days, it is a fact that the OMT for allergic diseases has a lower proportion to that of western treatment In order to increase the role of OMT, we think, oriental medical doctors need to develop an explanatory model of improving $people^{\circ}{\phi}s$ constitutions and should lower the cost of herbal medicine.

Objective : Asthma is a lung disorder characterized by periodic attacks of wheezing alternating with periods of relatively normal breathing. And quality of life in asthmatic patients shows a tendency to decrease. So we had a clinical study whether if oriental medical treatment could improve their quality of life or not. Methods : The 15 cases were new patients that visited at division of respiratory system, department of internal medicine in Kyunghee medical center from the 1 st of July, 2000 to the 1 st of August. All of them were diagnosed as asthma and treated by western medical therapy. We used a Quality of Life Questionnaire for adult Korean Asthmatics(QLQAKA) and evaluated the results after two times answers, at an interval of two weeks. Results : The mean of the first answer was 2.84 marks and 3.36 ones after two weeks. If there is a difference of over 0.5 points between the two, we can admit significant effect. After the asthmatic patients treated by oriental medical therapy, they gained a difference of 0.52 points, 10.4%. Conclusions : We suggest that oriental medical therapy can improve the quality of life of asthmatic patients arid we can alternate side effects of western medical therapy with oriental one. if they carry out two different treatments at the same time.

Objective : The major risk factors of stroke are hyperlipemia, ateriosclerosis, hypertension, diabetis mellitus, smoking, drinking, age, personal history, family history etc. Hypertension, smoking and hyperlipemia are very important factor to promote stroke. We intended to observe the serum lipid density of 51 patients come to Joongpoong & Chronic Disease Center of Conmaul Oriental hospital, comparing with already reported study. Methods : We studied 51 stroke-patients( 38 cerebral infarction, 13 intracerebral hemorrhage) of Conmaul Oriental hospital, Department of oriental internal medicine, Joongpoong & Chronic Disease Center from January 1. 1999 to August 31. 2000, which examined by neurologic test, brain-CT, brain-MRI. . We used DOSHISA TBA-30FR(Japan) as instrument for measuring total cholesterol and triglyceride of serum. Results and conclusions : The results are as follows 1. The rate of hyperlipemia and presumed-hyperlipemia is higher in female patient-group than male patient-group. 2. The rate of hyperlipemia and presumed-hyperlipemia is higher in drinking group than non-drinking group. 3. The rate of hyperlipemia and presumed-hyperlipemia is higher in hypertension group than normotention group.

Objective : This experiment was performed in order to study the effects of Scrophulariae Radix on the injured tracheal tissue induced So, in rats. Methods : Healthy adult male rats weighting about 250g were divided into 4 groups - the Normal group, the Control group, the group of Scrophulariae Radix administration for 5 days after $SO_2$, gas exposure(Sample I), and the group of Scrophulariae Radix administration for 10 days before and for 5 days after $SO_2$, gas exposure(Sample II). Results : In the trachea Control group, the lesion of the ciliated epithelium was severe and the mucus secretion of the respiratory tract was increased significantly. In the trachea of Sample I group, the lesion of the ciliated epithelium and the mucus secretion of the respiratory tract were decreased compared with Control group. In the trachea of Sample II group, the lesion of the ciliated epithelium and the mucus secretion of the respiratory tract were decreased compared with Control and Sample I group. conclusions : According to the above results, Scrophulariae Radix has significant effects on the injuried tracheal tissue caused by $SO_2$ in rats.

Objective : his study was carried out to investigate the effect of Dansameum (DS) on the gastrohemorrhagic lesion induced by ammonia in rats. Methods : Rats were pretreated with DS extract 25 mg/kg for 10 days and then were given amonia through gastric tube. The animals were killed 1 hr after amonia treatment. Results : DS extract siginificantly reduced the gastrohemorrhagic lesion score, the gastric lipid peroxide level, the gastric urease activity, the gastric myeloperoxidase activity, the gastric acid phosphatase activity, xanthine oxidase activity and type conversion, and increased the gastric glutathione level considerably. In photomicrographs of stomach tissue in rat, we could see the gastrohemorrhagic lesion induced clearly. conclusions : These results suggest that DS extract may be effective in peptic ulcer.

Objective : The investigation had been performed since from January 1st to August 31th of 1998. The patients for the experiment were mainly composed of patients who had trouble in breathing due to the pneumonectasis, asthmas, pneumonias. The percent of men is 67% in sex distribution and the ratio of persons over 50's was 85%, The effect was invastgated for the labored respiration who had Keumsuyukunjeon. Methods : In this research, some remarkable results are referred which were detected by measuring the variations of the breathing volume of 20 patients after taking Keumsuyukunjeon. Picrometer is used for the measurement of the volume. Results : From the relations between the breathing volume before treatment and the enhancement ratio, the increase of the enhancement ratio and the better response to the medicine were shown to the more serious patients. The period of treatment was 27.5 days average. The enhancement ratio of smoker was 23, and that of non-smoker was 50. At the test of relation between the trouble rate in breathing and the enhancement ratio, Grade ill shows the highest enhancement value 50%. conclusions : It is found that Keumsuyukunjeon gives a noticeable benefit for the patients whose main symptom was breathing problem. Long-term treatments for the serious and aged patients will make much more efficient to the reduction of the symptoms.

Objective : The prostatic disease is characterized as relatively incurable, chronic and recurrent illness. Because of this property, we have the difficulty in treating this illness. Besides, the drug selectivity is restricted to the specific prostatic membrane, the barrier of prostate. This study was to evaluate the efficency of the activating blood flow and removing blood stasis Method to Prostatic disease. Methods : We investigated 51 prostatic patiens with NIH chronic prostatitis symptom index, digital rectal examination(DRE), expressed prostatic secretion(EPS). After investigation we treated the patients with herb which was aimed to activate the blood flow and remove the blood stasis method to prostatic disease. Results : After the treatment, symptom index score of the prostatic patients was reduced from 11.7 to 7.4. The cure rate of 51 prostatic patients was 76.5%. Also the cure rate of the patients who was treated over 4 weeks was higher than the patients treated below 4 weeks, 87.5% to 66.7% respectively. conclusions : These results indicate that oriental medical theraphy is useful enough to treat the prostatic patients. Therefore, the more research about the herb which has activating blood flow and removing blood stasis effect is necessary.

Objective : In this study, the medicine herbs above were directly treated to cultured normal lung cells and lung carcinoma cells, and the effects were investigated to develope new cancer treatments with increased anti-cancer efficiency as well as decreased side-effects and to suggest more useful clinical therapies. Materials and Methods : In the experiment, WI-26 VA lung normal cell line and A-427 lung carcinoma cell line were cultured. To observe the morphological change of the treated cells, were subjected to Giemsa staining and observed under Reflected Fluorescence microscope. To examine whether cell death occurred, cells observed under Reflected Fluorescence microscope, To investigate the degree of cell death in the nucleus, cells were screened by Laser cytometry ACAS 570. Results : Samgibopye-tang(Shenqibufei-tang) stimulated not only the growth of the normal cells but also that of the carcinoma cells, Wikyeung-tang(Weijing-tang) induced morphological change such as cytoplasmic constriction in the normal cells and the carcinoma cells, but it did not show any strong inhibitory effect on the cell growth. Samso-eum(Shensu-yin) caused severe cell damage in both cell lines, Eunkyo San(Yinqiao-san) significantly damaged the nuclei and caused weak cytoplasmic constriction in both cell lines, Normal cells treated with Gilgyeung-tang(Jingeng-tang) did not show any significant morphological change while some Gilgyeung-tang(Jingeng-tang) treated carcinoma cells were observed to have a normal cell-like shape, interestingly, conclusions : As the results above, Samgibopye-tang(Shenqibufei-tang), Wikyeung-tang(Weijing-tang), and Gilgyeung-tang(Jingeng-tang) helped the growth of both cell lines, and especially Samgibopye-tang(Shenqibufei-tang) showed the best effect, However, Samso-eum(Shensuyin) and Eunkyo-san(Yinqiao-san) caused lethal damage in the normal cells and also showed strong toxicity in the carcinoma cells.

Objective : Experimental studies were done to research the effects of Gubo-eum(Jiubao-yin) and Kamigubo-eum(Jiameijiubao-yin) on the pulmonary thromboembolism and the immediately type hypersensitivity. Methods : For measuring the response about the pulmonary thromboembolism, we investigated a survival rate after the intravenous injection of sodium arachidonate and adenocine diphophate(ADP). For measuring the response about the immediately type hypersensitivity, we did the intravenous injection of histamin and serotonin, and phlebotomized and excoriated skin and investigated the amount of escaped pigment. Results : The each solid extract of Gubo-eum(Jiubao-yin) and Kamigubo-eum(Jiameijiubao-yin) revealed significant decrease effect on viscosity of mucin solution. The each solid extract of Gubo-eum(Jiubao-yin) and Kamigubo-eum(Jiameijiubao-yin) revealed significant effect on the pulmonary thromboembolism induced by sodium arachidonate and adenocine diphophate(ADP). The each solid extract of Guboeum(Jiubao-yin) and Kamigubo-eum(Jiameijiubao-yin) revealed significant on vascular permeability responses to intradenmal histamine and serotonine. conclusions : The each solid extract of Gubo-eum(Jiubao-yin) and Kamigubo-eum(Jiameijiubao-yin) revealed significant effect on the immediately type hypersensitivity and the pulmonary thromboembolism.

Objective : The purpose of this study was to examine the mood disorder, especially depression and anxiety which have an effect on rehabilitation in stroke patients. Methods : Subjects were 32 stroke patients who were inpatients and outpatients at Woosuk University oriental hospital. The degree of depression and anxiety was measured by the Beck Depression Inventory(BDI) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI, State Anxiety Inventory : SAI, Trait Anxiety Inventory: TAI). Other questionnaire included sex, age, onset of stroke, degree of education, econommic class, religion, relationship with family, expectancy on treatment, side of hemiplegia, weakness grade of hemiplegia. Results : Results were as follows. 1. The average scores of SAI, TAI and BDI were 45.7, 46.7 and 19.9. The percentages of patients who had relatively high SAI, TAI and BDI scores were 75%(>36 point), 87.5%(>36 point) and 56.2%(>16 point). 2. SAI was correlated with onset of stroke(p<0.05), religion and relationship with family(p<0.1 ), TAI with religion and BDI with weakness grade of hemiplegia(P

We had applied Saenggangunbitang, Gamijihwangtang, and Saenggangunbitang-Gamijihwangtang on a alcoholic liver disease patient with diabetes mellitus, Saenggangunbitang has been used to treat alcoholic liver disease and had known to have beneficial effects. Gamijihwangtang has been used to treat Yin deficiency syndrome in Orient Medicine. We observed clinical symptom, liver function, nutritional state and blood sugar. After first administration, Clinical symptom and blood sugar were improved by Gamijihwangtang medication. Alter second administration, Clinical symptom, blood sugar and liver function were improved by Saenggangunbitang-Gamijihwangtang medication. After third administration, clinical symptom and liver function were improved by Saenggangunbitang medication. It is possibly suggested that Saenggangunbitang-Gamijihwangtang medication has a therapeutic effect on alcoholic liver disease with diabetes mellitus.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis(ALS) is a fatal neuromuscular disease characterized by progressive muscle weakness resulting in paralysis. ALS is characterized by both upper and lower motor neuron damage. Diagnostic tests include magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) electromyogram(EMG), muscle biopsy, and blood tests. In order for a definitive diagnosis of ALS to be made, damage must be evident in both upper and lower motor neurons. When three limbs are sufficiently affected, the diagnosis is ALS. There is no cure for ALS. We recently experienced one case of ALS, The patients was diagnosed as ALS by EMG and Symptoms. We diagnosed her as Wea jeung and treated by Herbal-medication based on the differentiation of symtoms. we report change of his symptoms through both western medical treatment and oriental medical treatment.

The patient who has DM, Hypertension, Arrithemia, Arteral fibrillation, Heart failure attacted cerebral infartion and he was took treatment by chungpesagan-tang and mannitol at the same time for 4 days and only chungpesagan-tang for 3 days. General condition improved but at seventh day cold sweating and hypothermia appeared. So we take chest x-ray. The result is fleural effusion. Chungpesagan-tang is the method of Purgative action so heart function is injured in circulation. In the results we consider that the medication of chungpesagan-tang and mannitol at the same time is bad influence on heart and induce ftueral effusion.

Pleural effusion is a state, retention of a mount of liquid in pleural cavity. Main causes of pleural effusion is Congestive Heart Failure that is caused by left ventricular heart failure. And that of Congestive heart failure is caused by increase of pleural capillary pressure or remain of effusion in pleural cavity. Bilateral venous pressure of pleura make worse pleural effusion and one way of venous pressure of that bring out pleural effusion. The purpose of this study is to examine the efficacy of oriental treatment for pleural effusion is caused by heart failure. One woman of 86 years old complained the symptom of general weakness, dyspnea, flank pain, anorexia, insomnia, coughing, secretion mixed blood. The symptom is caused by effusion that is brought out acute pneumonia, heart failure. At the time of Admission, in the diagnosis of Admission, in the diagnosis of Hyuneum(懸飮) she had taken Kungha-tang hap pleurisy-bang,(芎夏湯合助膜炎方), so improved dyspnea, flank pain, insomnia, coughing. In views of examination, decrease of heart failure' s symptom and pleural effusion. After 13days of admission, she had taken palmul-tang.(八物湯). As a conseguence of that, the symptom of general weakness. anorexia is improved and she was discharged.

Idopathic thrombocytopenic purpura(ITP) is the most common autoimmune hematologic disorder. The use of glucocorticoids and splenectomy have been the mainstays of treatment of ITP Some studies have shown that chinese herbal medicine treatment increase platelet count level of ITP patients. However, there is a lack of research considering oriental herbal medicine with ITP, in korea. A 33-year-old female who had diagnosed ITP on Mar 1999, was treated herbal medicine for decreased platelet count level$(34000/{\mu}l)$ that was identified on regular follow-up. this patient's platelet count level was get to normal$(139000/{\mu}l)$ by BuQiSheXue(補氣攝血) pattern herbal medicine that composed with Radix Astragali(黃?), Herba Agrimoniae(仙鶴草), Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae(白朮), Radix codonopsis(黨參), etc. I report the case with a review of literature.

Vesicoureteral reflux(VUR) is a state that urine regurge from bladder to ureter and kidney because of congenital, structural, functional abnormality of ureterovesical junction and lower urinary tract than bladder. It may be the primary cause of recurrent urinary tract infection(UTI) in chindhood, If urine regurge with UTI, it can cause renal damage, leading to scar formation, hypertension, chronic renal failure, But upper complications can be prevented by early diagnosis and proper treatment of VUR and UTI, so clinician must focus on them in treatment of VUR. We had experienced a case of recurrent UTI with VUR regardless of consistent antibiotics therapy in 7 years old boy, Chief complain was urinary frequency, The symptom of urinary frequency was successfully treated by herb medicine(Gamijihwag-tang), So, we report this case with a brief review of related literatures.

In this case report regarding one patient with complete left bundle branch block and mild hypokinesia of left ventricle, who had cebebellar infarction and therefore showed the symptoms of cerabellar dyskinesia followed by dyspnea, chest discomfortness, insomnia and dry cough. From the point of oriental diagnostic criteria, the patient s clinical conditions were all classified as $^{\circ}AEdeprivation$ of kidney essence' and treated accordingly. He showed no change in EKG monitoring but above symptoms were removed markedly after following treatment. Further elaboration of oriental diagnostic classification could possibly lead to the fundamental treatment.

IShort stature is two standard deviations (SD) below the mean for height (below the third percentile) in a population of children. We treated two cases below the third percentile for height with Boikyangwitang-gamibang(補益養胃湯加味方). During treatment Case I grew 4.2cm and became above the third percentile for height. Case II also grew 5.8cm and became above the third percentile for height. In the results We recognized Short status was showed prominent improvement with Boikyangwitang-gamibang(補益養胃湯加味方).
