This paper describes the design and development of a hovering AUV constructed at Cheju National University and analyses the dynamic performance of the vehicle using simulation programs. The main purpose of this AUV is to carry out fundamental tests in its station keeping, attitude control, and desired position tracking. Its configuration is similar to the general ROV appearance for underwater works and its dimensions are 0.75m*0.5m*0.5m. It has 4 thrusters of 450 watts for longitudinal/lateral/vertical propulsion and is equipped with a pressure sensor for measuring water depth and a magnetic compass for measuring heading angle. The navigation of the vehicle is controlled by an on-board Pentium III-class computer, which runs with the help of the Windows XP operating system. These give us an appropriate environment for developing various algorithms needed for developing and advancing Hovering AUV.

With the sharp increase of the oil price, the issue of the energy saving requires even higher propulsive efficiency of the propellers. Traditionally the propellers have been designed with the criteria such as that of Lerbs optimum based on the lifting line theory and the empirical formulae of Lerbs and van Manen giving relations of the wake pitch with the wake non-uniformity. With the aid of the high speed computer, it is now possible to apply the time-consuming iterative approaches for the solution of the lifting surface problems. In this paper we formulate the variational problem to optimize the efficiency of the propeller operating in the given ship wake using the lifting surface method. The variational formulation relating the spanwise circulation distribution with the propulsive efficiency to be maximized is however non-linear in circulation distribution functions, thus the iterative method is applied to the quasi-linearized equations. The blade shape design also requires the iterative procedures, because the shape of the blade which is represented by the lifting surface is unknown a priori. The numerical code was validated with the DTNSRDC propeller 4119 which is well-known to be optimum in uniform inflow condition. In addition existing (well-designed) commercial propellers were selected and compared with the results of the open water tests and the self-propulsion tests.

For the assessment of the retardation of fatigue crack propagation behavior due to overload, new FE analysis algorithms considering compressive residual stress redistribution near crack tip was proposed in this paper. The size of plastic zone near crack tip was obtained by elasto-plastic analysis and it was compared with Irwin's equation. The amount of residual stress redistribution was assessed by subsequent elasto-plastic analysis, and the difference of residual stress distributions between constant amplitude load and overload was obtained. In the analysis of fatigue crack propagation, the applied SIF range was evaluated by ASTM E647, and the effect of residual stresses on crack propagation was considered using the effective SIF concept. The test results of crack propagations were compared with the predicted data obtained by the analysis.

Environment of marine transportation market is changing rapidly. Due to globalization of world economy, marine transportation of cargos, especially trade using container boxes, is increasing dramatically. Fierce competition in the global market of container transportation forces the shipping industry to seek the economy of scale to reduce transportation cost, and drives the merge and alliance of liner shipping companies. Mega-sized container ships, having capacity over 10,000 TEU, were introduced, and appeared recently, in order to reduce the unit transportation cost. Korean shipping and shipbuilding companies are competitive, and have considerable market share in the global market. Even though both industries are inter-connected through ships and have many common interests in order to enlarge the global market share, inter-relation between two industries is surprisingly insignificant. In this paper current issues in the process of environmental change of marine cargo transportation are reviewed, and inter-relation of shipping and shipbuilding industries is discussed. Suggestions for inter-related development of Korean shipping and shipbuilding industries are given, and means for mutually beneficial collaboration are suggested.
