The purpose of this study was to investigate the positive effects of volunteer activities on cognitive health for middle-aged women. The questionnaire survey was conducted on middle-aged women aged 40 to 59, focusing on the question "How well does cognitive health work for middle-aged women through volunteer activities?" The goal of this study is to examine the effect of volunteer activities on the cognitive health of middle-aged women and to analyze the meaning and influencing factors of volunteer activities needed to maintain the desirable life of middle-aged women and the healthy life of the elderly. The necessity to diversify and activate volunteer activities of middle-aged women was proved through the survey.

  • Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) is caused by a deletion of the short arm on chromosome 4 and is characterized by multiple congenital abnormalities, growth and mental retardation. In this case report, we performed amniocentesis for the chromosome analysis on a 25-year-old pregnant woman at 16 weeks of gestation whom we suspected of Edward's syndrome by the triple test of maternal serum and ultrasonography. The result of analysis revealed a karyotype of the fetus with 46,XY,del(4)(p15) by trypsin Giemsa's banding technique. With the result, we were able to diagnose the fetus as having WHS. As such, after therapeutic termination of the pregnancy, we confirmed WHS through the sampling of tissue by both trypsin Giemsa's banding and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) method. To determine the origin of the WHS, we further tested the karyotypes of the parents. As parental karyotypes were found to be normal, we determined the case of the fetal WHS to be de novo.

  • The purpose of this study is to classify the facial images and analyze shape characteristics of Korean women in their 20s. Previous research and survey were used for the study, the surveys targeted 220 university students in their 20s. The subjects of the experiment were 20-24 year-old Korean women. SPSS 12.0 statistics program was used to analyze the results, and factor analysis, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ reliability analysis, and multidimensional scaling(MDS) were executed. The results of the study are as follows: First, the facial image types of Korean women in their 20s were classified into 4 categories as 'Youthfulness', 'Classiness', 'Friendliness', and 'Activeness'. Second, the multi-dimensional scaling method was performed and two orthogonal dimensions for the facial image of the Korean women were suggested: strong - soft and classy-friendly. Third, by analyzing the basic statistics concerning the structural characteristics of facial image of Korean women, there were differences in structural characteristics that form the facial images. Especially, significant difference appeared in items related forehead, eyebrows, eyes and jaw.

  • Purpose: This study was undertaken to identify stroke risk with risk factors and knowledge of stork in women with prehypertension. Methods: A total of 46 pre-hypertensive women in urban area aged 44.8 (SD 11.4) yr old in average were selected by a convenient sampling. Demographic data, risk factors, and knowledge of stroke were assessed through face to face interview. Stroke risk scores were calculated based on points given to age, systolic blood pressure, smoking, DM, and heart disease in Framingham stroke risk score. Data were analyzed by SPSS WIN 12.0 using descriptive statistics, two sample t-test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results: The mean systolic blood pressure of participants was 133.11 mmHg, and HDL cholesterol was lower than the recommended level, although rest of physiologic risk factors were within normal. Of the participants, 82% did not do regular physical activity and 75% did not control fat intake persistently. Mean stroke risk points and knowledge scores were 4.48 and 29.15, respectively, which were significantly different between women with and without persistent controlling fat intake. Conclusion: Results indicate stroke prevention intervention for prehypertensive women should address comprehensively modifying lifestyle as well as physiologic factors, and information focusing on stroke risk factors and warning symptoms.

  • Malakoplakia is an uncommon chronic granulomatous inflammation that usually involves the urinary and gastrointestinal tracts, but rarely affects the female genital tract. We experienced a case of malakoplakia in a cervicovaginal smear in a 54-year-old woman. Colposcopic examination showed a friable, easily bleeding tissue in the uterine cervix and the vaginal fornix. The cervicovaginal smear consisted of numerous isolated histiocytes, polymorphonuclear leukocytes, lymphocytes, and plasma cells. The histiocytes had an abundant, granular, and degenerated cytoplasm with inflammatory cell debris. Michaelis-Gutmann bodies were readily identified.

  • For the purpose to develop the pattern of a tailored jacket for the Chinese adult women, a drawing method for the pattern of a tailored jacket was selected with the style of 'on&on', a young and casual brand of Beaucre Merchandising Co., Ltd. that has been successful in the China market, and then the measures to be applied were set up by properly combining the body measures such as the mean, mode and median of the entire group from data measured from women of 18 to 24 years old in Shanghai, China in 2008 and the mean body measures of the body type A of 2008 classified by GB/T 1335.2-1997. The pattern of a tailored jacket developed was verified for feasibility based on a wearing test and then revised for the parts with low jacket ability in general including the bust circumference, waist circumference, hip circumference, shoulder, waist back length and back area. The final measures applied for the development of a tailored jacket were 160-165cm for the height, the bust circumference of 87.7cm, waist circumference of 69.6cm and hip circumference of 92.8cm for a jacket.

  • Gastric trichobezoars are commonly observed in young women with trichotillomania and trichophagia. We encountered an 8-year-old girl who had trichotillomania and trichophagia with abdominal pain and a mass, which was diagnosed as a large gastric trichobezoar. On physical examination, a huge, firm nontender mobile mass was palpated in her epigastrium. An upper gastrointestinal series and abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan showed a large mass in the stomach. Endoscopic removal was tried but failed. Laparoscopic removal was therefore performed. The trichobezoar was successfully retrieved through a gastrotomy and removed through an extended umbilical trocar incision. This case demonstrates that laparoscopic removal of large gastric trichobezoars is feasible and safe without a large abdominal incision.

  • This study examined nutrient intake of long-lived men and women living in Jeollanam-do (Gangjin, Goksung, Gurye, Damyang, Boseong, Suncheon, Jangheung) which is known as representative Korean longevity area. Using the 24 hr recall method, dietary nutrient intake data were collected from 134 subjects (67 for 80~89 years old, 67 for more than 90 years old) in spring and fall 2012. Nutrient for each subject were calculated using CAN-pro. Subjects' daily mean intake levels of macronutrients, vitamins and minerals were higher in fall than in spring. Compared to KDRIs, subjects less than recommend (RNI/AI). East consumed nutrients compared to KDRIs were folate, potassium, calcium, vitamin $B_1$, vitamin $B_2$ and vitamin E. Subjects 232.8~363.1% of recommended intake level for natrium. The nutrient adequacy ratio (NAR) was 0.87 for subjects in their 80s and 0.79 for than 90 years old. The average NAR of all subjects was 0.83. The index of nutritional quality (INQ) exceeded 1 for most nutrients except for Ca (0.87), K (0.77), vitamin $B_1$ (0.84), vitamin $B_2$ (0.70) and folate (0.68). The average INQ was 1.31. This study concluded that even though long-lived men and women living in Jeollanam-do consumed less than RNIs, nutrition consumption quality was relatively fine based on NAR and INQ results.
