  • 'Dream Song' is a cultivar of Gypsophila paniculata developed by the Jeollabuk-do Agricultural Research & Extension Services in 2010 for cut-flower production. This hybrid was bred from 121 seedlings collected from an open-pollinated population of 'Gyp06-11'. It has novel morphological characteristics of upright plant type, lanceolate leaves, double florets with a few bright white-colored petals of obovate shape, truncate petal tips, and cup-shaped calyces. Furthermore 'Dream Song' has desirable cultivation characteristics including narrow branching angle, and moderate resistance to powdery mildew, thrips and leaf miners. Moreover it produces more primary branches, and longer internodes and flower stalks than reference cultivar 'Bristol Fairy' during summer cultivation in a subalpine area (500 m over the sea level). Flowering in 'Dream Song' is delayed by about 17 days as compared to 'Bristol Fairy'. 'Dream Song' produces normal flowers with 2 pistils and an average of 10.4 stamens, with fewer malformed flowers than 'Bristol Fairy'.

  • As stand-missing rate (SMR) of ginseng plants in fields are directly related to the ginseng root rot, the forecasting model for the root rot progress in ginseng fields was developed, using the estimated SMRs by disease incidence (DI) of ginseng seedling in the soil-indexing bioassay and the estimate of DI derived from soil environmental factors or rhizoplane microflora. For fitness analysis of the forecasting model, simple correlation and linear regression between SMRs at different planting ages in fields and their estimates by 3 factors of the model were evaluated. The SMR estimated from the factor of DI in the bioassay had much higher fitness to the SMR observed in fields than that from the factors of soil environments and rhizoplane microflora. The estimated SMRs in young and aged ginseng fields by DI in the bioassay were significantly correlated with the observed SMRs in 3- and 5-year-old ginseng fields, respectively (p=0.01). this implicates that indexing preplanting field soils with the forecasting model using DI in the bioassay can provide an information to determine the suitability of the fields for ginseng cultivation, and that indexing cultivating field soils can be helpful to determine the time of harvesting to reduce further yield loss by root rot in continuous cultivation in the next year.

  • Stem blight symptom of soybean was severely developed in 2016 in Hwaseong and Yeoncheon. During the seedling period, the damping-off of seedlings and the brown or black spots of cotyledons were observed. After August, the leaves began to be yellowed, and partially browned areas on leaves began to develop. After September, microsclerotia began to form even on the surface of the stems that had exhibited water-soaking symptom. After mid-October of the harvest season, the epidermis of the stem was peeled off, resulting in the formation of a large number of microsclerotia in the cortex. The pathogens isolated from these symptoms were the best in mycelial growth at 32-35℃, and the formation of microsclerotia was the most at 20-28℃. The pathogen was identified as Macrophomina phaseolina through the morphological characteristics of the pathogen and the sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer region gene. In addition, when inoculated with a soybean stem using toothpicks cultured with the pathogen, the same symptoms as seen on the soybean field occurred. When the pathogen was re-isolated at the lesion site, the same pathogen was isolated and identified as Macrophomina phaseolina. Based on the results, the disease is reported as soybean charcoal rot.

  • The aim of this study was to establish the condition of regeneration for white balloon flower (Platycodon grandiflorum DC. cv. Jangback) and to manage for the raising of seedling with in vitro regenerated plants. It was examined that 0.5 mg/L of NAA and 1.0 mg/L of BA was the best composition for the callus and shoot induction (up to 600%). NAA was better than IBA for the induction of root and it took 16.9 days for the induction of rooting on the MS soild media containing 0.5 mg/L of NAA and the final rooting ratio was up to 75%. Out of 5 different bed soils purchased from local market, "Tosil" was identified to be the best for the acclimation and growth of in vitro regenerated balloon flower. In detail, on 8 weeks after planting of in vitro regenerated plants in pots containing "Tosil" bed soils, the plant hight was increased up to 2-fold (12.8 cm), 3.5-fold (27) for the number of leaf and 1.5-fold (4.5 cm) for the leaf length when compared to the other four bed soils, respectively. Our preliminary results indicate that it is possible to prevent the occurrence of blue balloon flower in the massive cultivated area of white balloon flower by providing the seedlings raised from in vitro regenerated plants.

  • This study was carried out to compare physical properties of the horticultural substrates measured by the European standard methods (CEN methods) and the Rural Development Administration of Korea methods (RDA methods). Sixty horticultural substrates including 40 marketed substrates and 10 organic and inorganic raw materials such as peat moss, coir dust, rice hull, perlite and zeolite were sampled. The samples were then analyzed for 6 physical properties by both CEN methods and RDA methods. The results of both methods were analyzed by linear regression. Bulk density ($R^2=0.8304$), particle density ($R^2=0.8136$) and porosity ($R^2=0.6374$) values measured by the two methods were highly significant. Whereas those for easily available water (EAW, $R^2=0.3327$), water volume ($R^2=0.2692$) and air volume ($R^2=0.0739$) were not significant. Further research is needed to facilitate the conversion between the two methods.

  • To begin with, this study identified and reviewed the proximate compositions, quality and physicochemical characteristics of three Korean cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) cultivars grown in two different seedling periods. The proximate compositions of the cowpea showed significant differences according to three cultivars (Seowon, Yeonboon and Okdang) and two different seeding periods (5 June and 5 July). Through this lens, the lightness, redness and yellowness of the cowpea cultivars increased slightly during the 5 July cultivation compared to the 5 June cultivation. This brings us to understand that the water binding capacity, water solubility index, and swelling power were significantly different among the cultivars. In this case, the water binding capacity of the cowpea was 108.87~143.19%, and decreased during the 5 July cultivation compared to the 5 June cultivation. As shown, the total polyphenol and flavonoid contents of cowpea showed significant difference according to cultivars. In this case, the total polyphenol content of 5 June and 5 July cultivation on the Seowon 4.17 and 4.12 mg GAE/g, respectively. In these terms, the DPPH radical scavenging activity of cowpea showed a significant difference according to the cultivars, and the Yeonboon and Okdang increased slightly during 5 July cultivation. The ABTS radical scavenging activity of the cowpea showed significant difference according to the cultivars, and all cultivars decreased slightly during the 5 July cultivation. In other words, the phenol contents and radical scavenging activity differ measurable depending on the cultivars and seeding periods. Therefore, it is necessary to study the proper cultivar and seeding time considering the environment of the applicable cultivation area.

  • Establishments of the seedlings inside the natural forest from adjacent artificial forests would be an important factor in forest stand dynamics. This study was conducted to see the invasion of Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) seedlings which is not native in this region, into the natural deciduous broad-leaved forest in Gwangneung, Korea. There is no mother tree at the I ha study site while the number of naturally regenerated P. koraiensis seedlings was 345 trees and 56% of them were clumped with more than two seedlings at each point. Applying the image segmentation method to IKONOS satellite image of January, 2003, the distance from the center of 1 ha study site to the nearest mother tree and plantation of Korean pine were 200 m and 270 m, respectively. The average height and root-collar diameter of the seedlings were 34 em and 7 mm, respectively and the age of 207 seedlings (60%) were below 5 years old. Most abundant range of soil moisture gradient and LAl (leaf area index) were from 16 to 20% and those of LAI were from 3.1 to 3.5. To understand the dynamics and seed dispersal pattern of Korean pine in the Gwangneung natural deciduous broad-leaved forests, additional studies not only long-term monitoring of growth and mortality of naturally regenerated Korean pine seedlings but also application of stable isotope analysis and molecular genetic techniques was recommended.

  • To research the seeding systems and the varieties adapted to mechanization in barley and wheat culture in Korea, the studies were carried out from October, 1969 to June, 1970 at Suwon. In these studies, six kinds of seeding systems of drilling and dibbling that seems to adapted to mechanization were tested as compared with the customary seeding system, furrowing moderately or widely, using three varieties of barley, Suwon #18, Barsoy and Buhufng, and three varieties of wheat, Wonkwang, Yucseung #3 and Yeungkwang, under the two fertilizer levels of standard and double. The summarize results gained were as follows; 1. Buhung seemed to be the most suitable variety in barley as it yielded the most and matured early and grew the safest. Barsoy suffered from winter injury. 2. Yeungkwang seemed to be the most suitable variety in wheat as it yielded the most and produced the largest grain ani grew the safest, however it matured late. Wonkwang suffered heavily from lodging injury. 3. More yield were produced and there were no increase of cultural dangers except lodging in double fertilizer level. 4. Seeding system of drilling and dibbling seems to be able to put in practice safely under the double fertilizer level when lodging resistant varieties are selected. 5. Rate of yields increase in comparison with the customary seeding system of moderate furrowing were 16 percent in drilling of 20 centimeter spacing, 13 percent in wide furrowing and 12 percent in dibbling of 20 ${\times}$ 12 centimeter spacing in barley and also 9 percent in wide furrowing, 8 percent in dibbling of 20 ${\times}$ 12 centimeter spacing and 7 percent in drilling of 20 centimeter spacing in wheat. 6. The most important cause of above yields increase seems to be the increase of spike number per unit area. 7. Yields increase by drilling as compared with furrowing was not caused by higher rate of seeding. 8. The plants matured a bit earlier by drilling and dibbling. 9. Better stands of seedling were fount in dibbling due to the promotion of germination by tramping. 10. An increase of yields will be expected by decreasing the spacing in drilling and dibbling.

  • In order to understand the growth and ecophy -siological response of ginseng to global warming condition, we cultivated one and two year ginseng seedlings in control (ambient $CO_2$ + ambient temperature) and global warming treatment (elevated $CO_2$ + elevated temperature) from March 2010 to July 2011. Shoot appearance and initiation of flowering were advanced by 3-4 days in global warming treatment than in control. However, timing of fruit setting and seed ripeness was similar in both control and global warming treatment. Shoot length was longer in global warming treatment than in control, and also the number of leaves was much in global warming treatment. Fresh root weight was not different between control and global warming treatment. Photosynthetic rate was higher in global warming treatment than at control. Photosynthetic rate and transpiration rate were higher in two year seedlings than in one year seedlings at control, but was not different between seedling age of ginseng in global warming treatment. Water use efficiency was higher in one year seedlings than two year seedlings at control and global warming treatment. These results demonstrated that Korean ginseng more or less positively responds to global warming situation.

  • Rice (Oryza sativa) cultivars show an impairment of growth and development in response to abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity, heat and cold at the early seedling stage. The tolerance to heat stress in plants has been genetically modulated by the overexpression of heat shock transcription factor genes or proteins. In addition to a high temperature-tolerance that has also been altered by elevating levels of osmolytes, increasing levels of cell detoxification enzymes and through altering membrane fluidity. To examine the heat tolerance in transgenic rice plants, three OsOPT10 overexpressing lines were characterized through a physiological analysis, which examined factors such as the electrolyte leakage (EL), soluble sugar and proline contents. We further functionally characterized the OsOPT10 gene and found that heat induced the expression of OsOPT10 and P5CS gene related proline biosynthesis. It has been suggested that the expression of OsOPT10 led to elevated heat tolerance in transgenic lines.
