  • A model test was carried out, in order to verify the hydrodynamic performances of public 30 feet class sailing yacht. In the initial design stage, the performances and the running attitude of sail yacht including the hull form and sail plan, appendages were estimated by VPP, from which made the representative test conditions. A new experiment system such as captive model device was composed because the running attitude could be changed by wind conditions. The test results show that the minimum resistance is generated in the heeling 20 degree, which was expected in the initial design stage. It is thought to be the useful informations that the keel has au effects on hydrodynamic forces and resistance differences between the upwind and the downwind condition.

  • The demand for sailing yacht is increasing in consonance the improvement of people's live. These yachts can be dually propelled by wind and by diesel engine power. A singing (humming, whistling) phenomenon induced on the propeller was discovered on a 55-foot catamaran sailing yacht. As a result, an increase in the structural vibration of the stern tube room and propulsion system with abnormal noise was detected due to this flow. In this study, the cause of the phenomenon is investigated and its possible countermeasures proposed.

  • The scantling and structural design work is done during the initial stage in yacht design. This paper studies a procedure of the structural design for yacht with an illustrative design. Scantling of structural members and loads are defined based on the rules suggested by ISO(International Standard Organization) and ABS(American Bureau of Shipping). Also, FEA(Finite Element Analysis) model is presented for a practical guide for structural analysis. An equivalent structural element is used to simplify the composite material for the analysis.

  • This study suggests a navigation route for maritime tourism cruise sail yacht that sails off from Yeosu, and passes by Baekdo and Geomundo with their live island culture, to Kimnyeonghang of the Jeju islands. Recently, there are increasing number of accidents in proportion to vitalizing marine leisure. That's why it should be examined by region and sea when developing safe sea route considering characteristics of the sailing yacht. Thus, it is needed to introduce marine culture, hold international sailing yacht race and develop multi-functional sea port according to the case of Geomundo. Also additional analysis for navigation ruote patterns and density of the fairway is required. This information will improve safe sailing level of sailing yacht that will help the local tourism industry.

  • To develop a sailing yacht successfully, systematic engineering information is required including technologies from various companies and know-how about sailing yacht. The engineering information about sailing yacht has a complex and extensive structure. Therefore, a robust and high-level of management system is needed to manage the information. In this paper, we design and propose Generic-YWBS (Generic-Yacht Work Breakdown Structure), a work breakdown structure for sailing yachts. The Generic-YWBS is aimed at constructing sailing yachts and contains contents about product- and process-oriented information of sailing yachts. In addition, the Generic-YWBS plays an important role in managing the engineering information as a basic schema of database and system architecture. The Generic-YWBS is derived from fundamental WBS design processes and various rules about sailing yachts, for example, ISAF (International Sailing Federation) equipment rule and IRC rating rule, and a generic structure concept is applied for flexibility. The Generic-YWBS is applicable for various purposes. We designed a detailed code system in order to apply the Generic-YWBS to contents management system. The series of activities are realized through a web-based RIA(Rich Internet Application) program. This program manages the YWBS structure in an XML schema, and the Generic-YWBS management application offers a customizing function to be adapted in the field.

  • The purpose of this study was verily the structure model of yacht participants' motives for sport participation, satisfactions of basic psychological need and intentions of persistent participation. Their motives for sport participation and satisfaction of basic psychological desires are reported as variables involving so much in their intentions of persistent participation in the sport activity in which participants of Life Exercise take part. Therefore, a survey research was conducted by aiming at members of yacht foyers' groups and university yacht clubs, 267 copies of the questionnaire in total were used for the analysis. SPSS 12.0 and AMOS 7.0 were used for the processing of the data, and exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis and covariance structure model analysis were also applied according to each study objective. The results of the study were as follows: Firstly, there were significant correlations among yacht participants' satisfaction of basic psychological desires, participation motives and intentions of consistent participation. Secondly, yacht participants' satisfaction of basic psychological desires was found to have significant and direct effects on their intentions of persistent participation while haying indirect effects through the medium of their motives for sport participation at the same time. Thirdly, their motives for sport participation had significant effects on their intentions of persistent participation. Fourthly, suggested by the study, the structural equation model of yacht participants' motives for sport participation, satisfaction of basic psychological desires and intentions of persistent participation was found statistically appropriate.

  • One of the most important factors in sailing yacht design is an accurate velocity prediction. Velocity prediction programs (VPPs) are widely used to predict velocity of sailing yachts. VPPs, which are primarily based on experimental data and experience of long years, suffer limitations applied in realistic conditions. Thus, in the present study, a high fidelity velocity prediction method using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is proposed. Using the developed method, velocity and motion of a 30 feet sloop yacht, which was developed by Korea Research Institute of Ship and Ocean (KRISO) and termed KORDY30, were predicted in upwind sailing condition.

  • During sailing by wind-driven thrust on the sail, a catamaran sailing yacht generates leeway and heeling. For estimating resistance and moment prediction of a real ship by changing of running attitude, a model test of the ship has to be carried out. This study aims at establishing experimental techniques for a catamaran sailing yacht by changed attitude during running direction. Through the model test, drag and side force of the real ship are predicted. Also through experiment, rolling and yawing moments were considered.

  • Due to the limitation of size of the test section, blockage effects could not be avoided in the model test of yacht sails for common wind tunnels. In this paper, a numerical analysis is performed to investigate the blockage effects on the lift and drag forces measured from wind tunnel experiments for a 30 feet sloop yacht sail. Complex airflows around the jib and main sails including three-dimensional flow separations are calculated for various close-hauled conditions. It is found that the blockage of a wind tunnel changes the flow separation and consequently the lift and drag forces of the sails, especially the main sail, reduce and increase, respectively, due to the blockage effects.
