The effect of work-family role conflict and spousal support resources on parenting stress among working mothers with pre-school children (미취학 자녀를 둔 취업모의 일-가정 역할갈등, 배우자지지 자원이 양육스트레스에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of work-family conflict and spousal support resources on parenting stress among working mothers with pre-school children. This study involved a total of 232 working mothers with children enrolled in child care centers in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do as conducting a survey. First, the higher the work-family conflict (inter-role conflict caused by the impact of work on family life), the higher the family-work conflict (inter-role conflict caused by the impact of family life on work). Moreover, the lower the level of spousal support resources (emotional spousal support resources, instrumental spousal resources), the higher the work-family conflict and family-work conflict. The level of parenting stress was higher in working mothers experiencing greater work-family conflict and family-work conflict both and lower levels of spousal support resources for parenting. Second, the number of children and the amount of work-family conflict and instrumental spousal support resources had a statistically significant impact on parenting stress. Thus, the higher the number of children, the greater the work-family conflict, and the lower the level of instrumental spousal support resources, the higher the level of parenting stress. The findings of this study highlight the relative effects of role conflicts between work and family and of spousal support resources on parenting stress in working mothers. Husbands' being involved in parenting, in particular, was identified as an important support function for healthy child-rearing by successfully combining career and family responsibilities.

Mother's Internal Working Model for Attachment Relationships; Adult Attachment Interview (어머니의 부모와의 애착관계에 대한 내적 실행모델 -성인애착면접(Adult Attachment Interview)을 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of the study was to examine the adaptability of AAI(Adult Attachment Interview) in Korea. The subjects were 20 mothers who had toddlers from middle class. AAI was administrated to them. Interviews were audiotaped and transcribed verbatim. The results showed that Korean Mothers' AAI classifications were Secure-Autonomous(F) 60%, Insecure=Dismissing(Ds) 20%, Insecure-Preoccupied(E) 5%, Insecure-Unresolved/disorganized(U/d) 15%. The classification of AAI was significantly related with mothers' education, but not mothers' age. Autonomous mothers discribed consistently in evaluation of attachment-related experiences and valued attachment. Dismissing mothers showed a incoherent discourse and dismissed attachment-related experiences and relations. Preoccupied mother sticted to past attachment relationship and perplexed with evaluation of these experiences. Unresolved mothers showed lapse during discussion of loss or abuse and were not free from past experiences. Based on the findings of the study, it was found th AAI(Adult Attachment Interview) can be used for evaluation of mother's internal working model in Korean culture.

Working Alliance in Parent Consultation : Relationships with Mothers' Level of Self-concealment and Perception of Social Support (부모상담에서 어머니의 자기은폐 수준 및 지각된 사회적 지지와 작업동맹의 관계)

  • This research studied mothers of clients to examine relationships between level of self-concealment and level of perception of social support in the working alliance (goal concurrence, task agreement, and emotional relationships during parent consultation) as perceived by the therapist, Subjects were 87 mothers of clients and 42 therapists. The parent consultation sessions examined in this study ranged from the 3rd to the 12th session. Data were analyzed by simple regression and two-way ANOVA. Results showed that (1) the level of self-concealment affected all components of working alliance. (2) Perception of social support level affected all components of working alliance. (3) Interaction effects of levels of self-concealment with perception of social support were significant.

  • The purpose of this study is to inverstigate the need of child care services and child care programs for the working class mothers. We surveyed four Industrial complex (in Seoul, Incheon, Pusan, Ulsan) to collect data. The samples were 282 mothers (Seoul: 95, Incheon: 54, Ulsan: 62, Pusan: 71). The mothers had children under six years of age and they worked at factory for 11 hours. They (65%) rented houses with 1-2 rooms. Their income was not enought to support their family. They were never supported by social network, so they had to work at factory and they need child care services. The mothers had many difficulties of child rearing and early childhood education. They wanted perfect day care programs. They expected it as followings: (1) Day care center placed at factory or near home. (2) The administrater is goverment or employer. (3) It is managed a full time system. (4) It is center-based day care or industrical day care. (5) They share day care expense with employer or goverment. (6) Day care expenses is 35,000 won in case of full time system, 25,000 won in case of half-time system. They desited highly qualifed day care programs, but they would not expense highly cost. So we suggest that goverment and factory employers support the working mothers.

The Effect of Family Caregiver Burden on Psychological Well-Being among Middle-Aged Working Mothers: Focused on the Moderating Effect of Family Support Resources (중년기 취업모의 가족부양부담이 심리적 복지감에 미치는 영향 - 가족지지 자원의 조절효과를 중심으로 -)

  • This study aimed to explore the moderating effect of family support resources on family caregiver burden as it in turn affects psychological well-being among middle-aged working mothers. Through purposive sampling, the study recruited 325 married employed mothers age 40-50 years who live in Seoul and who have more than 1 child and living parents or parents-in-law. The investigation was performed April 1-30, 2018, with the participants sampled from companies, schools and religious organizations in Seoul. The collected data were statistically analyzed using the SPSS 21.0 package. The results of this study were as follows: First, of all categories of caregiver burden, the score for burden of caring for elderly parents was 3.01 (SD = .81), slightly higher than the median of 3 points; childcare burden scored 3.16 (SD = .73), also higher than the median value; and family support resources scored 3.40 (.89), higher than the median of 3. Overall psychological well-being rated 3.25 (SD = .56). Second, health and educational level, the burdens of caring for elderly parents and childcare and family support resources were found to significantly affect psychological well-being. Third, family support resources, a moderating variable, were found to significantly moderate and ease the effect of childcare burden on middle-aged working mothers' psychological well-being. Furthermore, in the analysis of their moderating effect, family support resources were confirmed to positively affect psychological well-being by moderating childcare burden experienced by middle-aged working mothers.

The Relationships between Family Strengths, Mothers' Self-Efficacy and Children's Social Behavior (가족의 건강성과 양육효능감 및 유아의 사회적 행동과의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships between the family strengths, mothers' self-efficacy, and their young children's teaming-related social skills and behavior problems. The subjects were the 217 children aged 4 to 6 years and their mothers at private child care centers in Seoul. The Family Strengths Scale and the Mothers' Self-Efficacy questionnaire were administered to the mothers. The teachers rated the learning-related social skills and problem behaviors of each child whose mother returned a set of Questionnaires. Analysis of variance revealed statistically significant differences in the family strengths according to the education level of the mothers. The mean the family strength score was higher for working mothers than for non-working mothers. The results of the test were statistically significant differences in the scores on the learning-related social skills and problem behaviors between boys and girls. The family strengths were positively correlated with the mothers' self-efficacy, and the learning-related social skills of the young children, while they were negatively correlated with problem behaviors.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between childrearing belief and parental efficacy of women before and after childbirth. For this purpose 253 pregnant women and 256 mothers with infants under one year of age were contacted and asked to fill in a packet of survey questionnaire at their visits to obstetrician, gynecologist and pediatrician. The questionnaire includes questions about what mothers value in childrearing, their expectations for their children and parental efficacy. Data collected were analyzed using SAS PC program. It was reported that comparing to mothers, pregnant women view childrearing in more ideal lights and expect their children to be more exceptional. Also working mothers reported comparatively lower parental efficacy than full-time mothers suggesting that social support system to minimize pressure coming from work for working mothers with young children should be provided and the parental education methods to enhance the parental efficacy should be sought.

  • The purpose of this study is to resolve the factors that affect happiness levels and l Considering the increasing importance of maintaining and developing the careers of working mothers, this study sought to analyze the effect of the meaning of work (MOW) and child-based self-worth (CBSW) on the work-family interface and career commitment. This is the first exploratory study to examine MOW and CBSW as resources for working mothers. For 10 days, starting August 18, 2020, 309 working mothers were asked to complete a questionnaire commissioned by a professional research institute, and 250 valid samples were then analyzed. The analysis found, first, that MOW had statistically significant positive effects on work-family enrichment and family-work enrichment and a negative effect on work-family conflict. Second, CBSW had a positive effect on work-family and family-work conflicts. Third, work-family enrichment had a positive effect on career commitment, while work-family conflict had a negative effect on career commitment. Finally, the mediation effects of the three paths were determined: MOW→work-family enrichment→career commitment; MOW→family-work enrichment→career commitment; CBSW→work-family conflict→career commitment. These results suggest that, to better manage the career commitment of working mothers, attention should be paid to the MOW, CBSW, and work-family interface.

Does Maternal Employment Affect Parental Time Allocated to Children's Food Consumption and Physical Activity? Evidence from the Korean Time Use Survey

  • This study uses the 1999-2009 Korean Time Use Survey to explore how mothers' employment affects parental time spent in activities that may relate to their children's weight. Specifically, it estimates two-part regression models to assess the effects of maternal employment upon the amount of time mothers spend in activities potentially related to their preschool children's eating and physical activity. The findings suggest that working mothers and those mothers who work longer hours allocate significantly less time in food preparation, eating with the child, and supervising the child's physical activity than mothers who are not employed and those who work fewer hours. The paper also finds that spouses of working mothers do not allocate more time to these activities to offset the reduction in mothers' time. Also, using local unemployment rates as instrumental variables, maternal employment is found to allow mothers to spend significantly more time on food preparation and family meals, although its effect on mothers' total childcare time is negative. Several aspects of Korean society may have made the relationship between maternal employment and childhood weight issues different from what was found in other countries.

The Effects of Childhood Attachment on the Parenting Practices of Working Mothers : The Mediating Role of Parental Satisfaction (유아기 자녀를 둔 취업모의 아동기 애착경험이 양육행동에 미치는 영향 : 부모역할만족도의 매개적 역할)

  • The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between childhood attachment, parental satisfaction and the parenting practices of working mothers with young children. The participants were composed of 221 working mothers with young children attending day care centers and kindergartens in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. The subjects completed questionnaires on childhood attachment, parental satisfaction and parenting practices. The data were analyzed by means of Pearson's correlation coefficients and multiple regression analysis. It was observed that childhood attachment had an effect on parenting practices. Parental satisfaction was also found to have an effect on parenting practices. In addition, childhood attachment had an effect on parental satisfaction. It was further found that parental satisfaction mediated the relationship between childhood attachment and parenting practices very well. These results clearly indicate that parental satisfaction plays an important role in childhood attachment and parenting practices.
