Changes in Problem Recognition and Perceptions of Learning Environments of Elementary Students through Inquiry Questioning Activity (탐구 질문하기 활동을 통한 초등학생의 문제 인식과 학습 환경에 대한 인식 변화)

  • The study presents preliminary research on how science activities focusing on problem recognition worked and affected students' perception of their learning environment in a sixth science classroom. The science activities were based on the Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) which was suggested by Keys, Hand, Prain & Collins (1999), where problem recognition was an important part of scientific inquiry. For developing the working sheets for the modified SWH in this study, analyses of target units of 6th grade science curriculum in the aspects of problem recognition were conducted. After consecutive 6 classes with the developed working sheets for sixth graders, the student working sheets for each lesson were collected and analyzed. In order to investigate the developed units' affect on student learning, students' perceptions of their learning environment were administered before and after the applied classes. Students working sheets and questionnaires on their perceptions of learning environment indicated that students perceived that the science activities were more student-centered classes where students had active discussion and dialogue with one another giving them more chances to actively take part in the class as well as they used more properly recognized their inquiry problem.

Development of the Scientific Inquiry Process Model Based on Scientists' Practical Work

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a scientific inquiry model that makes scientific inquiry accessible to science teachers as well as students. To develop a scientific inquiry model, we investigated the research process demonstrated by ten scientists who were working at academic research institutions or industrial research institutions. We collected data through scientists' journal articles, lab meetings and seminars, and observation of their inquiry process. After we analyzed the scientists' inquiry strategies and processes of inquiry, we finally developed the Scientist's Methodology of Investigation Process model named SMIP. The SMIP model consists of four domains, 15 stages, and link questions, such as "if, why", and "how". The SMIP model stressed that inquiry process is a selective process rather than a linear or a circular process. Overall, these findings can have implication science educators in their attempt to design instruction to improve the scientific inquiry process.

An Exploratory Study of the 'Method of Multiple Working Hypotheses' as a Method of Earth Scientific Inquiry (지구과학의 탐구 방법으로서 '복수 작업가설의 방법'의 특징에 관한 탐색적 연구)

  • In this study, the method of multiple working hypotheses (MMWH) as a method of earth scientific inquiry was applied in a context of abductive reasoning about the formation of a rock with a specific structure, and the characteristics of MMWH revealed in the reasoning process were explored. Participants were 31 senior undergraduate students enrolled in a course in a university of education. As part of the course, the participants performed abductive inquiry with multiple working hypotheses about the formation of a rock. The students were asked to record both the processes and results of their reasoning in sketchbooks. The content of the students' sketchbook reports was analyzed according to the principle of analytic induction. Results demonstrated four assertions. First, the participants' working hypotheses were suggested in the use of resource models, and the adaption of the resource models often occurred in this process. Second, the perceptual properties of evidence influenced the activation of the resource models. Third, the kinds of observed evidence and the different interpretations of evidence resulted into different judgments on working hypotheses. Fourth, sometimes new hypotheses were generated by the combination of alternative hypotheses. Implications of these findings for earth science education and relevant research were discussed.

The Current Working Conditions in Ugandan Apparel Assembly Plants

  • Background: The present rapid shift of industrialization from developed to developing countries requires developing countries to understand issues related to work organization, management, and working conditions. There are many factors slackening production, of which working conditions is part. A complete inquiry into the workers' working conditions can enable managements to reduce risks in the workplaces and improve productivity. Understanding and awareness of the benefits of workplace research and a probe into the working conditions in the Ugandan apparel assembly plants are urgently required. Methods: A total of 103 (70 women and 33 men) workers from five different plants were interviewed. Together with the top management of various plants, questionnaires about the workers' opinions of their physical working conditions were prepared. Data was collected using two methods: (1) questionnaire; and (2) observation of the workers during their work. Results: The results indicated that poor plant working conditions were mainly contributed by the workers' social factors and the management policies. Conclusion: The government, together with the management, should work to improve the working conditions in the apparel assembly plants, as it greatly affects both.

The Effect of Pre-service Elementary Teachers' Experiences of Inquiry Performance in the Life Domain on Their Images of a Scientist and Science Teaching Anxiety (초등 예비교사들의 생명영역 탐구 수행 경험이 과학자 이미지와 과학 교수 불안에 미치는 영향)

  • This study aims to find out the effect of pre-service elementary teachers' experiences of inquiry performance in the life on their images about a scientist and science teaching anxiety. Thus, this study selected 162 college juniors who completed 'Science Teaching Material Research & Teaching Methods' for one semester at a university of education. Groups of 3 to 4 pre-service teachers were made to select one of the 10 experimental topics and inquired it for themselves, and make a presentation about the results before the other pre-service teachers. The results of this study can be summarized as below. Firstly, as a result of investigating pre-service elementary teachers' opinions about the characteristics of scientists, it was found that they thought of scientists prudent, intellectually superior, creative, and hard-working, but did not consider them artistic or religious, no matter if they had inquiry performance experiences. Especially, to such characteristics as intellectually-superior, creative, open-minded, outgoing and responsible, they showed more positive responses after inquiry performances. Besides, in scientists' activity types shown in pre-service elementary teachers' drawing pictures of a scientist, 'Experimental Activity' increased most after their inquiry performances, and in the place of activity, 'Laboratory' was most since it was related to activity types. Secondly, as a result of examining per-service elementary teachers' science teaching anxiety before and after inquiry performances, it was found that they showed statistically significant differences in all the domains, scientific knowledge, inquiry class preparation and inquiry class management. This finding could be interpreted as their inquiry experiences had positive effect on their having confidence in teaching science.

The Effects of Jigsaw II Expert Groupings on Studentis Knowledge, Inquiry Ability and Attitudes at Elementary School Science Study (전문가집단을 활용한 Jigsaw II 협동학습이 과학지식, 탐구능력 및 학습태도에 미치는 영향)

  • Recently, introduced open education, there are some models applied several cooperative teaming, but there is no case in applied Jigsaw Ⅱ. So this research is selected objects which are 147 students in the fifth grade in 1999' school year and 143 students in 2000's on Yongwon elementary school. It makes share a partial responsibility for planner, leader, investigator, helper, writer and reporter in the small groups, and apply the Jigsaw Ⅱ model. Qualitative and quantitative analyses show that they have effects of Jigsaw Ⅱ cooperative Learning on Student's knowledge, inquiry ability and attitudes on Elementary School Science Study. The final results are following. The significance of Knowledge has .02 in 1999 and .01 in 2000. Testification of Inquiry ability has 1.75 in 1999 and 2.25 in 2000. The significance of Attitudes has .03 in 1999 and .00 in 2000. Research that has emerged from the cooperative teaming has led us to better understandings of multi purposed roles, interactions, and communities that arise when students work together to team science. Each of students can also cooperative as co-builders, working as equal participants to create a product that is better than that while would have built by either individual alone. Upon asking their intention, cooperative loaming shows more participation.

  • Most of existing studies for B2B are concerned with efficient search and/or negotiation. But nevertheless it is important to provide quick and transparent guarantee to the buyer, it is hard to find studies related with it. This article suggests the guarantee process for customer satisfaction after purchasing in B2B e-marketplace under make-to-order manufacturing environment. The process consists of three modules; a request and response, a feedback processing, and a work inquiry. Each of them is adopted according to the source of defect and business relationship of buyer, seller, provider, and repairer. All of the process is implemented in user-friendly fashion and a case is presented for the enterprise portal site.

Mathematical thinking, its neural systems and implication for education (수학적 사고에 동원되는 두뇌 영역들과 이의 교육학적 의미)

  • What is the foundation of mathematical thinking? Is it logic based symbolic language system? or does it rely more on mental imagery and visuo-spatial abilities? What kind of neural changes happen if someone's mathematical abilities improve through practice? To answer these questions, basic cognitive processes including long term memory, working memory, visuo-spatial perception, number processes are considered through neuropsychological outcomes. Neuronal changes following development and practices are inspected and we can show there are neural networks critical for the mathematical thinking and development: prefrontal-anterior cingulate-parietal network. Through these inquiry, we can infer the answer to our question.

A Narrative Inquiry on Work-related Stress of Child Care Teachers in Employer-supported Child Care Centers (직장어린이집 보육교사의 직무스트레스에 관한 내러티브 탐구)

  • The purpose of the study was to carry out research on the work-related stress of child care teachers in employer-supported child care centers. Four-experienced child care teachers were designated for this research, and then data were collected through narrative research. In this study, work-related stress of child care teachers in employer-supported child care centers was found to be of the following types, "laborious oneself caused by the prolonged working environment", "fears about non-permanent employment status", and "a huge mountain named parents work". Research findings were discussed in term of the implication of understanding teacher' work-related stress.

A Phenomenological Perspective and Discovery of Meaning in Nurse's Experience in Clinics (병원 근무 간호사의 경험)

  • Purpose: The ultimate aim of the inquiry was to discover the essence of nurse's experience and promote understanding. Method : Guided by Colaizzi's method - 1. Description of the phenomena of interest by the reader. 2. collection of subject's description of the phenomena, 3. Reading all the subject's descriptions of the phenomenon, 4. Returning the original transcripts and extracting significant statements, 5. Trying to spell out the meaning of each significant statements, 6. Organizing the aggregate formalized meanings into clusters of themes. 7. Writing an exhaustive description, 8. Returning to the subjects for validation of the description, 9. If new data fare revealed during the validations incorporating them into an exhaustive description. The participants in this study were eight are nurses working for clinics. This strategies for data collecting were needed : deep face to face interview. Results : 6 cluster of themes are : 1. the heavy pressure, 2. the pride and the royal summons, 3. the powerlessness, 4. the hope, 5. the tiresome. 6. the distressed feeling. Conclusion : The results of the this study would help us to understand nurses in clinics, make direction for nursing education, and identify need for continuing inquiry.
