  • The experiment on the liquid jet in crossflow in supersonic BFS (backward-facing step) flow was conducted to investigate the mixing characteristics. The working fluids are nitrogen and water. The shadow graph technique was used to visualize the flow field. Images captured by the high-speed camera were applied to analyze the flow phenomena. The liquid jet was injected at the re-circulation zone created by the supersonic jet flow. Experimental conditions are defined based on the pressure of the nitrogen gas chamber and pressurized liquid tank. In respective cases, the penetration depth of liquid jet and location of the Mach disc were observed to be proportional to the momentum ratio of gas and liquid jets.

  • The concentration of remaining formaldehyde contained in waste liquid emitted from the process of urea-formaldehyde microcapsule synthesis was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Three factors that can affect on the reaction of formaldehyde were selected including pH, ammonium chloride input and temperature. The effect of these factors on the concentration of remaining formaldehyde was studied. When ammonium chloride input was 0.025g, microcapsules could not be obtained or core substance leaked out because of weak shell, and therefore this reaction condition would be inadequate. It was confirmed that the concentration of remaining formaldehyde could be minimized when the microencapsulation was conducted at 70℃ and pH 2.5 by using a ammonium chloride input of 0.050g. This study can make contribution to UF microencapsulation in safer working environment.

  • A radio-frequency (RF) Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) torch system was used for boron-nitride nano-tube (BNNT) synthesis. Because of electrodeless plasma generation, no electrode pollution and effective heating transfer during nano-material synthesis can be realized. For stable plasma generation, argon and nitrogen gases were injected with 60 kW grid power in the difference pressure from 200 Torr to 630 Torr. Varying hydrogen gas flow rate from 0 to 20 slpm, the electrical and optical plasma properties were investigated. Through the spectroscopic analysis of atomic argon line, hydrogen line and nitrogen molecular band, we investigated the plasma electron excitation temperature, gas temperature and electron density. Based on the plasma characterization, we performed the synthesis of BNNT by inserting 0.5~1 um hexagonal-boron nitride (h-BN) powder into the plasma. We analysis the structure characterization of BNNT by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy), also grasp the ingredient of BNNT by EELS (Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy) and Raman spectroscopy. We treated bundles of BNNT with the atmospheric pressure plasma, so that we grow the surface morphology in the water attachment of BNNT. We reduce the advancing contact angle to purity bundles of BNNT.

  • Due to the development and expansion of industries and medical standards, the number of workers who handle organic solvents within hospitals is increasing. The authors in this study intended to investigate the actual conditions of the handling of the solvents and to encourage the recognition that the exposure to such solvents may be possible because of insensitivity to safety. In order to investigate the actual conditions of exposure of workers within hospitals, the experimental group included the three sections (Pathology department, Central Supply Room, and Operating Room), which handle organic solvents most frequently. Meanwhile, university interns were selected to be the control group. This study was conducted between May 1 to May 30, 2007, and urine was taken as samples. Hippuric acid, mandelic acid, methylhippuric acid, and phenylglyoxylic acid were analyzed through gas chromatography, and a total of 52 subjects of the experimental and the control groups were performed of the analysis. As for the results of the analysis of the experimental group, the exposure to benzene was $42.27{\pm}3.70mg/g$ creatinine, that of xylene was $1.30{\pm}0.18g/g$ creatinine, and that of toluene was $2.36{\pm}0.24g/g$ creatinine. Meanwhile, the results of the analysis of the control group showed that the exposure to benzene was $15.54{\pm}2.85mg/g$ creatinine, that of xylene was $0.52{\pm}0.02g/g$ creatinine, and that of toluene was $0.85{\pm}0.20g/g$ creatinine. The amount of exposure to benzene, xylene, and toluene was shown to be under the maximum permitted level, but as for Pathology department, it was required to educate on working conditions, to educate workers on prevention management about their health, and to install fume hood and exhaust system to improve the environments.

  • In this research, amophous carbon films (a-C, a-C:H, a-C:N) were synthesized by closed-field unbalanced magnetron (CFUBM) sputtering using graphite target. We also fabricated amorphous carbon films with applying negative DC bias voltage of 200 V in during the deposition in working pressure. Also, a-C:H and a-C:N films was synthesized by adding acethylene($C_{2}H_{2}$) and nitrogen(N) gases of 4 and 3 sccm into Ar pressure. The a-C:H film synthesized at -200 V exhibited the maxumum hardness of 26.3 GPa, the smooth surface of 0.1 nm and the good adhesion of 30.5 N. And a-C:N film synthesized at -200 V exhibited at -200 V exhibited the best adhesion of 32 N. This paper examined the effect of $C_{2}H_{2}$ gas, $N_{2}$ gas and negative DC bias voltage as the parameter for improving the physical properties and the relation between structral and physical properties of carbon films.

  • Digestion of a municipal wastewater sludge by the anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR) was investigated to evaluate the performance of the ASBR process at a critical condition of high-solids-content fined. The reactors were operated at an HRT of 10 days with an equivalent loading rate of 0.8-1.5 gVS/L/d at 35$^{\circ}C$ The main conclusions drawn from this study were as follows: 1. Digestion of a municipal wastewater sludge was possible using the ASBR in spite of high concentration of settleable solids in the sludge. The ASBRS with 3- and 4-day cycle period showed almost identical high digestion performances. 2. No adverse effect on digestion stability was observed In the ASBRS in spite of withdrawal and replenishment of 30% or 40% of liquid contents. A conventional anaerobic digester could be easily converted to the ASBR without any stability problem. 3. Flotation thickening occurred in thicken step of the ASBRS throughout steady state, and floating bed volume at the end of thicken period occupied about 70% of the working volume of the reactor Efficiency of flotation thickening in the ASBRS could be comparable to that of additional gravity thickening of a completely mixed digester. 4. Solids were accumulated rapidly in the ASBR during start-up period. Solids concentrations in the ASBRS were 2.6 times higher than that in the completely mixed control reactor at steady state. Dehydrogenase activity had a strong correlation with the solids concentration. Dehydrogenase activity of the digested flu형e in the ASBR was 2.9 times higher than that of the flu형e in the control reactor, and about 25 times higher than that of the subnatant in the ASBR. 5. Remarkable increase in equivalent gas production of 52% was observed at the ASBRS compared with the control reactor in spite of similar quality of clarified effluent from the ASBRS and control reactor. The increase in gas production from the ASBRS was believed to be combined results of accumulation of microorganisms, higher driving force applied, and additional long-term degradation of organics continuously accumulated.

  • In this study, the deformation behavior stability of sealing rings with three different cross sectional areas has been presented using a FEM technique. To investigate the deformation behavior stability, the initial compression rate of 25% has been applied to the sealing ring, which is molded with a nitrile butadiene rubber. The maximum strain, maximum stress, and maximum contact normal stress have been analyzed for the working fluid pressure of $25kgf/cm^2$. The FEM results show that the maximum strain of a hollow o-ring and a hollow rectangular ring with a hollow space in the center of a sealing ring is higher than that of a conventional o-ring, but the maximum stress and the maximum contact normal stress are low. In these results, the sealing rings with a hollow space in the center of the cross sectional area is recommended to increase an extended endurance stability of sealing rings. But, the solid sealing ring is designed to guarantee the sealing safety of a contact sealing ring.

  • For the silicon oxide $(SiO_x)$ films prepared by using the facing target sputtering (FTS) apparatus that was manufactured to enhance the preciseness of the fabricated thin-film and sputtering yield rate by forming a higher-density plasma in the electrical discharge space for using it as a thin-film passivation system for flexible organic light emitting devices (FOLEDs). The deposition characteristics were investigated under various process conditions, such as array of the cathode magnets, oxygen concentration$(O_2/Ar+O_2)$ introduced during deposition, and variations of distance between two targets and working pressure. We report that the optimum conditions for our FTS apparatus for the deposition of the $SiO_x$ films are as follows: $d_{TS}\;and\;d_{TT}$ are 90mm and 120mm, respectively and the maximum deposition rate is obtained under a gas pressure of 2 mTorr with an oxygen concentration of 3.3%. Under this optimum conditions, it was found that the $SiO_x$ film was grown with a very high deposition rate of $250{\AA}$/min by rf-power of $4.4W/cm^2$, which was significantly enhanced as compared with a deposition rate (${\sim}55{\AA})$/min) of the conventional sputtering system. We also reported that the FTS system is a suitable method for the high speed and the low temperature deposition, the plasma free deposition, and the mass-production.

  • In order to give hydrophobic surface properties on carbon steel, the fluorinated amorphous carbon films were prepared by using linear 2.45GHz microwave PECVD device. Two different process approaches have been tested. One is direct deposition of a-C:H:F films using admixture of $Ar/CH_4/CF_4$ working gases and the other is surface treatment using $CF_4$ plasma after deposition of a-C:H film with $Ar/CH_4$ binary gas system. $Ar/CF_4$ plasma treated surface with high $CF_4$ gas ratio shows best hydrophobicity and durability of hydrophobicity. Nanometer scale surface roughness seems one of the most important factors for hydrophobicity within our experimental conditions. The properties of a-C:H:F films and $CF_4$ plasma treated a-C:H films were investigated in terms of surface roughness, hardness, microstructure, chemical bonding, atomic bonding structure between carbon and fluorine, adhesion and water contact angle by using atomic force microscopy (AFM), nano-indentation, Raman analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

  • We have developed a position-sensitive Parallel Plate Avalanche Counter (PPAC) to detect the fission fragments and reconstruct the fission reaction plane in the experiment of studying nuclear equation of state (nEOS) by means of heavy ion collision (HIC). This experiment put forward high requirements for the performances of PPAC, such as the time resolution, efficiency and position resolution. According to these requirements we designed the PPAC with an active area of 240 mm × 280 mm working at low gas pressure. The results show that time resolution could be less than 300 ps. Position resolution is consistent with the theoretical calculation about 1.35 mm. Detection efficiency could be approaching 100% gradually with the voltage increasing in different gas pressures. The performances of PPAC have also been verified in beam experiment. Each set of anode wires can be accurately separated in the position spectrum. In the beam experiment, we also got the back-to-back correlation of fission fragments which is one of the direct signals characterizing binary decay.
