  • Background: A well-designed shift schedule has been reported to have a positive effect on improving health problems associated with shift work. This study aimed to identify compliance with the 17 recommendations on work schedule (WSRs) for shift nurses and related factors. Methods: The descriptive study was conducted with 182 nurses who worked in three shifts for more than 1 year at superior general and general hospitals in three regions. Data were collected with selfadministered questionnaire and 13-week work schedule tables, and analyzed with both person- and cycle-based compliance. Results: Person-based compliance was 11.77 among 17 items in total. However, no one completely complied with WSRs of "no work on weekends" and which showed the lowest cycle-based compliance (22.3%). Compliance with some WSRs was related to hospital type, proportion of nurses in school and having standards on work schedule at institutional level. Conclusion: Compliance with WSRs of shift nurses in Korea is still unsatisfactory, and one day off after night shift and work on weekend are quite common. Hospitals should keep the standards on work schedule, monitor compliance with standards, and try to introduce modified shift systems to improve the current problems.

  • As the linear scheduling method has been used since the Empire State Building linear schedule in 1929, it is being applied in various fields, such as construction and manufacturing. When addressing concurrent critical paths occurring in a linear construction schedule, empirical researches have stressed resource management, which should be applied for optimizing workflow, ensuring flexible work productivity and continuous resource allocation. However, work relationships have been usually overlooked in making the linear schedule from an existing network schedule. Therefore, this research analyzes the previous researches related to the linear scheduling model, and then proposes a method that can be applied for adopting the relationships of a network schedule to the linear schedule. To this end, this research considers the work relationships occurring in changing a network schedule into a linear schedule, and then confirms the activities movement phenomenon of linear schedule due to workspace change, such as physical floors change. As a result, this research can be used as a basic research in order to develop a system generating a linear schedule from a network schedule.

  • The construction inspection is conducted by the contractor or construction supervisor after a certain stage of work has been completed. As the consturction inspection task is dependant on construction schedule, however, it is difficult to plan inspection task systematically, resulting in increased supervision costs, delays in construction, and disputes. Therefore, this study aims to integrate inspection work with schedule management to systematize inspection procedures. Firstly, the inspection work is defined based on the construction supervision checklist. Then its relationship with the construction process, required time, and resources for inspection tasks are defined in construction schedule. Lastly, a process management program is used to assess the effects of applying the inspection work and examine changes in the overall construction period and process management. The proposed method in this study can support to plan construction inspection more systematically and to improve the effectiveness of construction quality management.

  • In this paper we applied dynamic programming to determining work schedule type. In dynamic programming formulation, each day during a planning horizon represents a stage for which a decision is made. The alternatives are given by work schedule types that combine regular time, overtime, additional shift, and so on. In this case, their associated return function is labor cost. The state is defined as the amount of work time allocated to stage 1, stage 2,…, and current stage. A case study for a real manufacturing company was performed to apply dynamic programming to scheduling daily work hours during a week. The case study showed that total cost of our solution derived from dynamic programming decreased by about 6% as compared with the solution obtained from the previous method.

  • In this paper, We focused the issue of creating a socially problematic nurse schedule. The nurse schedule should be prepared in consideration of three shifts, appropriate placement of experienced workers, the fairness of work assignment, and legal work standards. Because of the complex structure of the nurse schedule, which must reflect various requirements, in most hospitals, the nurse in charge writes it by hand with a lot of time and effort. This study attempted to automatically create an optimized nurse schedule based on legal labor standards and fairness. We developed an I/O Q-Learning algorithm-based model based on Python and Web Application for automatic nurse schedule. The model was trained to converge to 100 by creating an Fairness Indicator Score(FIS) that considers Labor Standards Act, Work equity, Work preference. Manual nurse schedules and this model are compared with FIS. This model showed a higher work equity index of 13.31 points, work preference index of 1.52 points, and FIS of 16.38 points. This study was able to automatically generate nurse schedule based on reinforcement Learning. In addition, as a result of creating the nurse schedule of E hospital using this model, it was possible to reduce the time required from 88 hours to 3 hours. If additional supplementation of FIS and reinforcement Learning techniques such as DQN, CNN, Monte Carlo Simulation and AlphaZero additionally utilize a more an optimized model can be developed.
