  • A numerical model for analyzing air-train-track interaction is proposed to investigate the dynamic behavior of a high-speed train running on a track in crosswinds. The model is composed of a train-track interaction model and a train-air interaction model. The train-track interaction model is built on the basis of the vehicle-track coupled dynamics theory. The train-air interaction model is developed based on the train aerodynamics, in which the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method is employed to deal with the dynamic boundary between the train and the air. Based on the air-train-track model, characteristics of flow structure around a high-speed train are described and the dynamic behavior of the high-speed train running on track in crosswinds is investigated. Results show that the dynamic indices of the head car are larger than those of other cars in crosswinds. From the viewpoint of dynamic safety evaluation, the running safety of the train in crosswinds is basically controlled by the head car. Compared with the generally used assessment indices of running safety such as the derailment coefficient and the wheel-load reduction ratio, the overturning coefficient will overestimate the running safety of a train on a track under crosswind condition. It is suggested to use the wheel-load reduction ratio and the lateral wheel-rail force as the dominant safety assessment indices when high-speed trains run in crosswinds.

  • Given the recent surge of interest towards utilization of renewable distributed energy resources (DER), in particular in remote areas, this paper aims at designing an optimal hybrid system in order to supply loads of a village located in Esfarayen, North Khorasan, Iran. This paper illustrates the optimal design procedure of a standalone hybrid system which consists of Wind Turbine Generator (WTG), Photo Voltaic (PV), Diesel-generator, and Battery denoting as the Energy Storage System (ESS). The WTGs and PVs are considered as the main producers since the site's ambient conditions are suitable for such producers. Moreover, batteries are employed to smooth out the variable outputs of these renewable resources. To this end, whenever the available power generation is higher than the demanded amount, the excess energy will be stored in ESS to be injected into the system in the time of insufficient power generation. Since the standalone system is assumed to have no connection to the upstream network, it must be able to supply the loads without any load curtailment. In this regard, a Diesel-Generator can also be integrated to achieve zero loss of load. The optimal hybrid system design problem is a discrete optimization problem that is solved, here, by means of a recently-introduced meta-heuristic optimization algorithm known as Lightning Attachment Procedure Optimization (LAPO). The results are compared to those of some other methods and discussed in detail. The results also show that the total cost of the designed stand-alone system in 25 years is around 92M€ which is much less than the grid-connected system with the total cost of 205M€. In summary, the obtained simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the utilized optimization algorithm in finding the best results, and the designed hybrid system in serving the remote loads.

  • As a link composition of a double link type level luffing jib crane was determinated through the link composition design, the design to be considered will be computations of the luffing trajectory deviation at the fly jib tip and the required luffing device capacity. This paper is a study regarding the static and dynamic analysis for a mechanism of the crane. The objective of the static analysis is to determinate the capacity and the dimension of luffing device when the crane selfload, rated hoisting load, wind load and inertia force are applied on the crane. The objective of dynamic analysis is to compute the luffing trajectory deviation, velocity and inertia force due to luffing acceleration for each link. All analyses are performed by computer programs. The reliability of the program was checked by results from analyses of the related commercial package. It is expected that the productivity and reliability of the design can be improved by this program which can rapidly and exactly deal with static and dynamic analysis for a given link composition of the crane.

  • The nailed joints in wood construction are commonly designed to resist and carry the lateral load but also subject to withdrawal force like uplift load due to the wind. This research was conducted to evaluate the performance of nailed joint composed of dimension lumber and sheathing materials through the nail withdrawal and unsymmetric double shear joint test, and then compared to current design values. The withdrawal strength was greatly dependant on wood specific gravity, and the withdrawal strength of I-joist with OSB showed higher value in spite of low specific gravity. The maximum withdrawal loads were greater than that of derived current design values about 5 times. The lateral resistance of Japanese larch/OSB nailed joints was higher than that of SPF/OSB nailed joint, and derived allowable lateral strength of nailed joints in this study exceeded the current design values. The failure mode of nailed joints was primarily due to the nail bending and this tendency was notable in SPF/OSB nailed joint.

  • Displacement of the Earth's surface due to atmospheric loading has been recognized since a century years ago, and its accurate estimation is required in present day geodesy and surveying, particularly in space geodesy. Atmospheric load deformation in continental region can readily be calculated with the given atmospheric pressure field and the load Green's function, and, in near coastal area, approximate model is used for the calculation. The changes in the Earth's atmospheric circulation and the seasonal variation of atmospheric pressure on two hemispheres of the Earth are the each main causes of variation of the Earth's spin angular velocity and polar motion respectively. Wind and atmospheric pressure do the major role in other periodic and non-periodic perturbations of the positions in the Earth's reference frame and variations in the Earth's spin rotational state. In this reviewing study, the developments of related theories and models are summarized along with brief description of phenomena, and the geodetic perturbing effects of a hypothetical typhoon passing Korea are shown as an example. Finally related existing problems and further necessary studies are discussed in general.

  • The application of the diagrid structural system has increased of late, but cyclic loadings such as winds and earthquakes cannot be fully understood through only an analytical study due to the difficulty of considering its welding property. In this study, diagrid nodes that had been scaled down to 1/5 of their full sizes were tested to find out their structural behavior under seismic or wind loads. Four specimens were used with five parameters, including the welding method and the design details. Cyclic loading tests were carried out, where a tensile load was applied to one brace member and a compression load to the other. The major failure modes in the tests were only failure of bending with tensile stress and tension failure. The welding method and the design details had no effect on the initial stiffness and yielding stress but play a significant role in the failure mode and energy dissipation, respectively.

  • Current design provisions and guide for performance-based design do not accurately evaluate seismic performance of flat plate system. In the previous companion studies, parametric studies using nonlinear finite element analyses were performed to investigate behavior of the flat plate, and based on the numerical results, design methods that can predict the bending moment-carrying capacity and the corresponding deformability of the flat plate was developed. In the present study, a generalized moment-rotation relation of the flat plate was developed based on the previous studies and the numerical analyses. The proposed method was verified by the comparisons with existing experiments. In addition, the effective stiffness of the flat plate corresponding to 0.2 percent of lateral drift that is generally regarded as the serviceability limit was proposed, so as to evaluate conveniently deflection of the structure subject to wind load.

  • In this study, we conduct power performance and load analyses of two different types of vertical-axis tidal-current turbines using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. To analyze the power output and loads, we perform transient CFD simulations considering the cavitation model using ANSYS CFX. The averaged power output of an H-type rotor was 7.47 kW and 67.6 kW in normal and extreme operating conditions, respectively, which did not satisfy the initial design conditions. However, in the case of the helical-type rotor, the power output under normal and extreme conditions were close to the expected values. The cavitation, which may cause instantaneous power fluctuation, occurred repeatedly at the suction side of the rotors. In order to guarantee a more stable power supply and to prevent fatigue failure, we require a design that minimizes cavitation.

  • In this paper, performance based design of coupling beam using non-linear static analysis is proposed considering probability distribution of flexural and shear strength in order to develop flexural hinge. This method considers post-yielding behavior of coupling beam and stress redistribution of system. It can verify the reduced effective stiffness to meet the current design requirement based on linear analysis. It also evaluates the lateral displacement under service load (un-factored wind load) properly. In addition, it can optimize the coupled shear wall system by taking stress redistribution between members into account. For a simplified 30-story building, non-linear static (push-over) analysis was performed and the structural behavior was checked at performance point and several displacement steps. Furthermore, system behavior according to the amount of reinforcement and depth of coupling beam was explored and compared each other.

  • The large scaled lead-acid battery is widely used for efficient operation of the photovoltaic system in many islands. However, lithium-ion battery is now being introduced to mitigate the fluctuation of wind power and to replace lead-acid battery. Therefore, hybrid ESS(Energy Storage system) that combines lithium-ion battery with lead-acid battery is being required because lithium-ion battery is costly in present stage. Under this circumstance, this paper presents the optimal algorithm to create composition rate of hybrid ESS by considering fixed and variable costs in order to maximize advantage of each battery. With minimization of total cost including fixed and variable costs, the optimal composition rate can be calculated based on the various scenarios such as load variation, life cycle and cost trend. From simulation results, it is confirmed that the proposed algorithms are an effective tool to produce a optimal composition rate.
