In the 2000s, a lot of cable-type grand bridges are being built in consideration of economic aspects such as the reduction of logistics costs and the distribution of traffic volume due to rapid economic development. In addition, because the recently installed grand bridges are designed in an aesthetic form that matches the surrounding environment as well as the original function of the road bridge, and serves as a milestone in an area and is used as an excellent tourism resource, attracting many vehicles and people, there is an urgent need for a safety structure that can ensure the safety of not only vehicles but also people. In order to make cable-stayed bridge safe on wind for additional five safety structures, main girder models with and without safety structures for wind-tunnel experiments was made, and wind tunnel experiments was carried out to measure aerodynamic force coefficients. Also, wind-resistant analyses of 3D cable-stayed bridge were performed on the basis of wind-tunnel experiment results. From the wind tunnel experiments for the aerodynamic force coefficients of main girder with five safety structures and the wind resistant analyses of cable-stayed bridge without safety structure and with safety structure, it was concluded that the best form of wind-resistant safety was shown in the order of mesh, standard, bracing, hollow, and closed type. And wind-resistant safety of cable-stayed bridge with hollow and closed type on design wind speed 68.0m/sec was not secured. Finally, as five safety structures are installed, maximum rate of stress increments was shown in the order of steel main beam, steel floor beam, concrete floor beam and cables.
In this study, operational vibration experiment and analysis have been conducted for the 4-blade small vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) including the effect of tower elastic behavior. Computational structural dynamics analysis method is applied to obtain Campbell diagram for the VAWT with elastic tower. An open type wind-tunnel is used to change and keep the wind velocity during the ground test. Equivalent reduced elastic tower is supported to the VAWT so that the elastic stiffness effect of the tower can be reflected to the present vibration experiment. Various excitation sources with aerodynamic forces are considered and the dominant operating vibration phenomena are physically investigated in detail.
The mechanical and aerodynamic effect of building shape plays a dominate role in the pedestrian level wind environment. These effects have been presented in numerous studies and are available in many wind codes. However, most studies have focused on wind flow around conventional buildings and are limited to few wind directions. The present study investigated wind circulation in the re-entrant corners of cross-shaped high-rise buildings from various wind directions. The investigation focused on the pedestrian level wind environment in the re-entrant corners with different aspect ratios of building arrangements. Ninety cases of case study arrangements were evaluated using wind tunnel experimentation. The results show that for adequate wind circulation in the re-entrant corners, building orientations and separations play a critical role. Furthermore, in normal wind incident directions and at a high aspect ratio, poor wind flow was observed in the re-entrant corners. Moreover, it was noted that an optimized building orientation and aspect ratio significantly improved the wind flow in re-entrant corners and through passages. In addition, it was observed that oblique wind incident direction increased wind circulation in the re-entrant corners and through passages.
Predictability of a Gaussian model, ISCST2 was assessed by scaling up wind tunnel experiments with a 1/3,000 terrain model to the real scale. Concentration profiles obtained from the flat-terrain experiment in the neutral condition were estimated to be in agreement with the calculated ones from ISCST2 in the stability class A, but the difference between the two was still large. Concentration profiles from the mountainous-terrain experiments were better fitted to the calculated ones primarily because in the experiment, concentration behind the source was raised due to the effect of a hill in the upstream side. Model prediction was improved with including the downwash effect of buildings and the hill, but overall concentration profiles were not much different from a typical Gaussian profile. While concentration profiles in the experiments were changed with local flows by varying the wind direction and the topography, those from the Gaussian modeling were mot freely changed together with these variations.
A free oscillation technique for obtaining the dynamic stability derivatives in yaw is applied to the pure yawing motion. The procedure of wind tunnel testing is to compute the derivatives after measuring deflecting angles of the model during the free oscillating motion. The charging compressed air is supplied for the initial excitation. The results of this experiment predicted feasible characteristics of the yawing motion, comparing with the data previously reported in the literature.
In this study, an optimized design of a triaxial load cell has been developed by the use of finite element analysis, design of experiment and response surface method. The developed optimal design was further validated by both stress-strain analysis and natural vibration analysis under an applied load of 30 kgf. When vertical, horizontal, and axial loads of 30 kgf were applied to the load cell with the optimal design, the calculated strains were satisfied with the required strain range of $500{\times}10^{-6}{\pm}10%$. The natural vibration analysis exhibited that the fundamental natural frequency of the optimally designed load cell was 5.56 kHz and higher enough than a maximum frequency of 0.17 kHz which can be applied to the load cell for wind-tunnel tests. The satisfactory sensitivity in all triaxial directions also suggests that the currently proposed design of the triaxial load cell enables accurate measurements of the multi-axial forces in wind-tunnel tests.

Skin frictional drag reduction efficiency of "stiff" compliant coating was investigated in a wind tunnel experiment. Flat plate compliant coating inserts were installed in a wind tunnel and the measurements of skin frictional drag and velocity field were carried out. The compliant coatings with varying viscoelastic properties had been prepared using different composition. In order to optimize the coating thickness, the most important design parameter, the dynamic viscoelastic properties had been determined experimentally. The aging of the materials (variation of their properties) during half a year was documented as well. A design procedure proposed by Kulik et al. (2008) was applied to get an optimal value for the coating thickness. Along with the drag measurement using the strain balance, velocity and pressure were measured for different coatings. The compliant coatings with the thickness h = 7mm achieved 4~5% drag reduction within a velocity range 30~40 m/s. The drag reduction mechanism of the attenuation of turbulence velocity fluctuations due to the compliant coating was demonstrated. It is envisioned that larger drag reduction effect is obtainable at higher flow velocities for high speed trains and subsonic aircrafts.
The experiment was performed at the large wind tunnel of the Chungnam National University to measure the velocity distribution around the stern of a Liquefied Natural Gas Carrier model. The data, mean velocity vectors of turbulent shear flows at the stern and near-wake including the propeller plane, were obtained by a five-hole Pilot tube for the double body model fixed inside the wind tunnel test section. The present result of the double body model shows a close agreement with the result of the lowing tank experiment performed by the KRISO for the same ship model. The characteristics of the LNG stern flow are discussed based on the measured velocity distribution. The data can be very useful for the validation of some numerical methods in computational fluid dynamics.
