It is desired to use a domestically manufactured ocean data buoy for the long-term operational ocean monitoring. The ocean data buoy manufacturing technology was introduced through the research cooperation with the Qingkong University of Taiwan. The introduced ocean data buoy system was further expanded and improved for more efficient application for the marine environmental monitoring in Korea. The size of the ocean data buoy is 2.5 m in diameter, which is smaller compared to the NOAA's 3.0 m discus buoy to allow easy land transportation and ocean deployment as well. From the dynamic response test of the buoy carried out numerically, it was shown that the measurement of waves with period greater than 4 seconds is acceptable. The measurement and control system of the data buoy were improved to increase the number of measuring parameters, to reduce power consumption and to enhance better data analysis and management. Each component of the improved data buoy system was described in detail in this paper. Water quality sensors of water temperature, salinity, DO, pH and turbidity were added to the system in addition to the marine meteorological sensors of wind speed and direction, air temperature, humidity, air pressure and wave. Inmarsat satellite communication system is used for the real-time data telemetry from the buoy deployed offshore. A field performance test of the improved and domestically manufactured buoy was carried out for a month at the open sea off Pohang together with DatawelI's Wave-rider buoy to compare the wave data. The results of the test were satisfactory.

The purpose of this study is to reproduce long-term wave fields in coastal waters of Korea based on wave hind-casting modelling and discuss its applications. To validate wind data(NCEP, ECMWF, JMA-MSM), comparison of wind data was done with wave buoy data. JMA-MSM predicted wind data with high accuracy. But due to relatively longer period of ECMWF wind data as compared to that of JMA-MSM, wind data set of ECMWF(2001~2014) was used to perform wave hind-casting modelling. Results from numerical modelling were verified with the observed data of wave buoys installed by Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA) and Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency(KHOA) on offshore waters. The results agree well with observations at buoy stations, especially during the event periods such as a typhoon. Consequently, the wave data reproduced by wave hind-casting modelling was used to obtain missing data in wave observation buoys. The obtained missing data indicated underestimation of maximum wave height during the event period at some points of buoys. Reasons for such underestimation may be due to larger time interval and resolution of the input wind data, water depth and grid size etc. The methodology used in present study can be used to analyze coastal erosion data in conjunction with a wave characteristic of the event period in coastal areas. Additionally, the method can be used in the coastal disaster vulnerability assessment to generate wave points of interest.

Ocean buoys are operated for safe navigation and collecting ocean data. Recently, to reducing marine buoy's damage by ocean weather's bad condition and collision with vessels has been conducted in several field research. This paper's experiment is buoy condition monitoring about predefined data form by users. As a result using Wireless remote control board applying a radio signal processing algorithms, it can observe buoy's state at an interval of three minutes on the land. Acquired data type is changeable according to ocean weather condition or buoy's purpose of using in advance. Also, this paper conducted an experiment such as data-transmission's stability and wireless communication's availability. As results of the analysis of the transmitted data, the solar, wind and wave power indicates the maximum amount of power, 50 W, 20 W and 40 W respectively. The communication system proven through this research can apply to buoy or other ocean facility.
Offshore wind energy is gaining more and more attention during this decade. For the countries with coast sites, the water depth is significantly large. This causes attention to the floating wind turbine. Offshore wind turbines are designed and analyzed using comprehensive simulation codes that account for the coupled dynamics of the wind inflow, aerodynamics, elasticity and controls of the wind turbine, along with the incident waves, sea current, hydrodynamics, and foundation dynamics of the support structures. In this work, a three-bladed 5MW upwind wind turbine installed on a floating spar buoy in 320m of water is studied by using of fully coupled aero-hydro-servo-elastic simulation tool. Specifications of the structures are chosen from the OC3 (Offshore Code Comparison Collaboration) under "IEA Wind Annex XXIII-subtask2". The primary external conditions due to wind and waves are simulated. Certain design load case is investigated.

Moored ocean buoys are technically feasible approach for making sustained time series observation in the oceans and will be an important component of any long-term ocean observing system. The 3M disc buoy carried Zeno 3200, MCCB, Orbcomm, Global Star and Bluetooth module. The deployments have relied on Orbcomm and Global Star as the primary satellite communications system. In addition to detailing our practical experience in the use of Orbcomm and Global Star as high latitudes, we will present some of scientific sensor results regarding real-time oceanographic and meteorological parameters such as wind speed, wave height and etc. In this paper we present the design and implementation of a small-scale buoy sensor network. One of the major challenges is that the network is hard to access after its deployment and hence both hardware and software must be robust and reliable.
From the ancient times, there are waves in the ocean. And all the moving body have energy. We have a kind of hope to convert the wave energy into electric one. Finally we can find out a power generator mechanism that mainly use the principle of pulleys. We have made drawings for this and completed the wave energy converter. This wave energy converter consists of several pulleys, rope, generator, buoys and anchors. The distance between an anchor and buoy is changed according to the hight of waves. Several sets of anchors, pulleys and buoys can make the movement of rope, and the ropes wind up a converter axis. In case of 1 meter movement of the buoy, the winding distance will be amplified 2 or 3 times if we use several moving and fixed pulleys. Based on this concept, we developed 2 kind of prototypes. One is for the test in the laboratory and the other is for the field test. Through the two test, we could confirm the usability of this mechanism.
For the evaluation of wind resources, numerical simulation was carried out as a tool for establishing wind map around the korean peninsula. Initial and boundary condition are given by 3 hourly RDAPS(Regional Data Assimilation and Prediction System) data of KMA(Korea Meteorology Administration) and high resolution terrain elevation land cover(30 seconds) data from USGS(United States Geological Survey). Furthermore, Data assimilation was adopted to improve initial meteorological data with buoy and QuikSCAT seawinds data. The simulation was performed from 2003 to 2006 year. To understand wind data correctly in complex terrain as the korean peninsula, at this research, Wind map was classified 4 categories by distance from coastline and elevation.

In this paper, a compliant buoy mooring system of a floating cylindrical structure in shallow water depth is studied experimentally. The compliant buoy mooring system consists of four buoys, vertical mooring legs and horizontal mooring lines. A series of model test were carried out at KRISO ocean engineering basin for various mooring parameters; line length, pretension of mooring leg and mooring layouts and environmental conditions; regular and irregular waves combined with current and wind. The mooring line tensions and 6-DOF motions of the floating structure were measured using water-proof load cells and 3 CCD camera system. The results of a series of model tests were discussed on nonlinear motion behaviors of the floating structure and characterisitics of cumulative distributions of mooring line peak tensions.
This paper introduces remote-sensing data which can be practically applied for offshore wind resource assessment. Development of offshore wind energy is inevitable for Korea to achieve the national dissemination target of renewable energy, i.e., 5% uptil 2010. However, the only available offshore in-situ measurement, marine buoy data would not represent areal wind characteristics. Consequently, remote-sensing technology has been started to apply to offshore wind resource assessment and is actively developing. Among them, NCAR/NCEP reanalysis dataset, QuikSCAT blended dataset, and offshore wind retrieval from SAR imagery are briefly summarized in this paper.
An offshore wind turbine supported by a spar buoy floating platform is the subject of this study on tower and rotor extreme loads. The platform, with a 120-meter draft and assumed to be sited in 320 meters of water, supports a 5 MW wind turbine. A baseline model for this turbine developed at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is employed in stochastic response simulations. The support platform, along with the mooring system consisting of three catenary lines, chosen for loads modeling, is based on the "Hywind" floating wind turbine concept. Our interest lies in gaining an understanding of the dynamic coupling between the support platform motion and the turbine loads. We first investigate short-term response statistics using stochastic simulation for a range of different environmental wind and wave conditions. From this study, we identify a few "controlling" environmental conditions for which long-term turbine load statistics and probability distributions are established.
