High-density UMo/Zr monolithic nuclear fuel plates have a promising application prospect in high flux research and test reactors. The solid state welding method called co-rolling is used for their fabrication. Hot co-rolling simulations for the composite blanks of UMo/Zr monolithic nuclear fuel plates are performed. The effects of coupon sizes and mechanical property parameters on the contact pressures between the to-be-bonded surfaces are investigated and analyzed. The numerical simulation results indicate that 1) the maximum contact pressures between the fuel coupon and the Zircaloy cover exist near the central line along the plate length direction; as a whole the contact pressures decrease toward the edges in the plate width direction; and lower contact pressures appear at a large zone near the coupon corner, where de-bonding is easy to take place in the in-pile irradiation environments; 2) the maximum contact pressures between the fuel coupon and the Zircaloy parts increase with the initial coupon thickness; after reaching a certain thickness value, the contact pressures hardly change, which was mainly induced by the complex deformation mechanism and special mechanical constitutive relation of fuel coupon; 3) softer fuel coupon will result in lower contact pressures and form interfaces being more out-of-flatness.
Weldability, especially HAZ cold cracking, weld metal solidification cracking, and HAZ liquation cracking susceptibilities, of ASTM A356 CA6NM martensitic stainless steel casting was investigated and compared with that of 9-12% Cr ferritic steel castings. Irrespective of the Cr and Ni content in the castings, the HAZ maximum hardness increased with an increase of carbon content. CA6NM steel, which has the lowest carbon content, had the lowest HAZ hardness and showed no cold cracking in y-slit cracking tests. CA6NM steel, meanwhile, showed the largest weld metal solidification cracking susceptibility in varestraint tests because of its higher amount of impurity elements, phosphorus, and sulfur. All castings investigated had good high temperature ductility in hot ductility tests and showed little difference in liquation cracking susceptibility.

The column-tree type steel beam-column connections are commonly used in East Asian countries, including Korea. The welding detail between the stub beam and column is similar to the WUF-W connection; thus, it can be expected to have sufficient seismic performance. However, previous experimental studies indicate that premature slip occurs at the friction joints between the stub and link beams. In this study, for the accurate seismic performance evaluation of column-tree type moment connections, a moment-slip model was proposed by investigating the previous test results. As a result, it was found that the initial slip occurred at about 25% of the design slip moment strength, and the amount of slip was about 0.15%. Also, by comparing the analysis results from models with and without the slip element, the influence of slip on the performance of overall beam-column connections was examined. As the panel zone became weaker, the contribution of slip on overall deformation became greater, and the shear demand for the panel zone was reduced.

A novel type of buckling restrained brace with built-up angle steel was developed. The core segment was formed by welding angle steel, and the middle section was reduced by cutting technology to solve the problem that the end of BRB was easy to buckle. The experimental program has been undertaken to study the performance of BRBs with different unbonded materials (silica gel, kraft paper) and different filler materials (ordinary concrete, full light-weight concrete). Four specimens were designed and fabricated for low cycle reciprocating load tests to simulate horizontal seismic action. The failure mode, hysteretic curves, tension-compression unbalance coefficient and other mechanical parameters were compared and analyzed. The finite element software ABAQUS was used to conduct numerical simulation, and the simulation results were compared with the experimental phenomena. The test results indicated that the hysteretic curve of each specimen was plump. Sustaining cumulative strains of each specimen was greater than the minimum value of 200 required by the code, which indicated the ductility of BRB was relatively good. The energy dissipation coefficient of the specimen with silica gel as unbonded material was about 13% higher than that with kraft paper. The experimental results were in good agreement with the simulation results.

This paper presents the results of the experimental and analytical investigation for the fatigue strength of welded details frequently used in steel bridges, especially for the details with relatively lower fatigue strength. The welded details included four kinds of welded details corresponding to the categories C, D, E and E' which represent the flange attachment details, web attachment details, transverse stiffeners and cover-plate details. Tensile fatigue tests were performed. The test results were compared with other available test results and the fatigue criteria of AASHTO, JSSC and Eurocode specifications. Generally, our test results were well agreed with other test results and satisfied with above-mentioned fatigue design provisions. However, it was found that transversely loaded weld-details showed lower fatigue strength than longitudinally loaded weld-details in transverse stiffener detail, and the test results of those details were not satisfied with AASHTO fatigue provisions. Examining the effect of length of gusset plate attachment details, welded details with longer attachment showed relatively lower fatigue strength, especially for the out-of-plane gusset plate details. It is recommended to perform additional fatigue tests with various loading and detail parameters and to establish the more detailed fatigue categories such as Eurocode or JSSC

Stainless steel sheets are widely used as the structural material for dynamic machine structures, These kinds structures used stainless steel sheets are commonly fabricated by using the gas welding, For fatigue design of gas welded joints such as various type joint. It is necessary to obtain design information on stress distribution at the weldment as well as fatigue strength of gas welded joints. Thus in this paper, ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curves were obtained by fatigue tests. and, ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curves were rearranged in the ${\Delta}{\sigma}-N_f$ relation with the hot spot stresses at the gas welded joints. Using these results, the accelerated life test(ALT) is conducted. From the experiment results, an life prediction model is derived and factors are estimated. So it is intended to obtain the useful information for the fatigue lifetime of welded joints and data analysis by statistic reliability method, to save time and cost, and to develop optimum accelerated life prediction plans.

An experimental study on performance characteristics of an evaporative heat exchanger based on tests for various operating conditions was presented. The heat exchanger maximizes the heat transfer rate per unit volume by applying mini-channels for both the air and coolant flow paths, and minimizes the amount of the coolant by using its latent heat of evaporation. The heat exchanger was manufactured by etching the flow paths, brazing the heat exchange plates, and welding the in/out ports of the media. The basic performance test has confirmed that the heat exchanger met its design requirements, and the results of the map test were analyzed to produce the performance characteristics quantitatively depending on the air inlet temperature, the air flow rate, and the coolant flow rate.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the seismic performance of weak-axis column-tree type connections used in steel moment frames. These connections are composed of a shop-welded and fieldbolted steel structure and can improve welding quality. On this basis, column-tree type connections are widely used in steel moment resisting frames in Korea and Japan. In this study, splices designed with a semirigid concept regarding the seismic performance of column-tree connections were experimentally evaluated. The structures can absorb energy in an inelastic state rather than the elastic state of the structures by the capacity design method. For this reason, the plastic hinge might be located at the splice connection at the weak-axis column-tree connection by reducing the splice plate thickness. The main variable was the distance from the edge of the column flange to the beam splice. CTY series specimens having column-tree connections with splice length of 600 mm and 900 mm were designed, respectively. For comparison with two specimens with the main variable, a base specimen with a weak-axis column-tree connection was fabricated and tested. The test results of three full-scale test specimens showed that the CTY series specimens successfully developed ductile behavior without brittle fracture until 5% story drift ratio. Although the base specimen reached a 5% story drift ratio, brittle fracture was detected at the backing bar near the beam-to-column connection. Comparing the energy dissipation capacity for each specimen, the CTY series specimens dissipated more energy than the base specimen.

This paper dealt with contents on the performance evaluation of standardized steel and non-standardized steel of lattice girder. Lattice girder is arch type tunnel supports made of structural steel bar and it is girder used to ensure the stability of tunnel by suppressing any transformation of ground as much as possible during tunnel excavation. The performance evaluation of lattice girder can be conducted through bending strength test, tensile strength test and tunnel standard specification specifies that welding structural steel with over 500MPa yield strength shall be used. However, it is difficult to distinguish visually between standardized steel and non-standardized steel onsite if low-quality structural steel is used. Accordingly, this paper conducted performance evaluation of standardized steel and non-standardized steel of lattice girder to point out the issue of deteriorated yield strength of non-standardized steel, while proposed a method of verifying yield strength onsite.

In this study, effects of carbon and nickel on microstructure and low temperature Charpy impact properties of HSLA (high strength low alloy) steels are investigated. To understand the complex phase transformation behavior of HSLA steels with high strength and toughness before and after welding processes, three kinds of HSLA steels are fabricated by varying the carbon and nickel content. Microstructure analysis, low temperature Charpy impact test, and Vickers hardness test are performed for the base metals and CGHAZ (coarse-grain heat affected zone) specimens. The specimens with the lowest carbon and nickel content have the highest volume fraction of AF, the lowest volume fraction of GB, and the smallest GB packet size. So, the low temperature Charpy absorbed energy of the CGHAZ specimen is the highest. The specimens with increased carbon and nickel content have the lowest volume fraction of AF, the highest volume fraction of GB, and the largest GB packet size. So, the low temperature Charpy absorbed energy of the CGHAZ specimen is the lowest.
