Wear resistance of cutting tools is one of the most important requirements in terms of the durability of cutting tool itself as well as the machining accuracy of the workpiece. Generally, tungsten carbide ball end mills have been processed with hard coatings for high durability and wear resistance such as diamond coating and tetrahedral amorphous carbon(ta-C) coating. In this study, we developed multilayer ta-C coatings whose wear resistance is comparable to that of diamond coating. First, we prepared single layer ta-C coatings according to the substrate bias voltage and Ar gas flow, and the surface microstructure, raman characteristics, hardness and wear characteristics were evaluated. Then, considering the hardness and wear resistance of the single layer ta-C, we fabricated multilayer coatings consisting of hard and soft layers. As a result, it was confirmed that the wear resistance of the multilayer ta-C coating with hardness of 51 GPa, and elastic recovery rate of 85% improved to 97% compared to that of the diamond coated ball end mill.
The wear resistance of Hyper-eutectic Al-Si alloy, have recently been noticed as a new automobile material, was investigated. For the purpose of developing wear resistant Al-Si alloy, some factors which attribute to wear resistance are examined as follows; refinement of primary Si particle during solidification, and effect of refinement on wear resistance and other mechanical properties. The most effective refinement was accomplished by adding both NaF and S, and this improve wear-resistance in abrasive wear type. The wear losses of specimens cast in metal mold were ruduced to 80% of those in sand mold. T6 heat treatment increases hardness, which resulted in reduction of wear loss about $3{\sim}18%$.
The effects of maleic-anhydride-grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) and montmorillonite (MMT) on the wear resistance of polypropylene (PP) were investigated. The surface of MMT was modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, and the interfacial interaction between PP and MMT was improved using PP-g-MAH. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to confirm that silane was grafted on the surface of MMT. The Taber abrasion test and scanning electron microscopy were used to determine the wear resistance and observe the surface morphology of PP, respectively, after wear testing. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy was used to compare the effects of PP-g-MAH and silane modification of MMT on the dispersion of MMT. The results indicated that silane was successfully grafted onto the surface of MMT. Moreover, the wear resistance of PP was improved by the addition of MMT. The wear resistance of PP composites comprising silane-modified MMT and PP-g-MAH was higher than those of other PP composites. This was attributed to silane improving the interfacial interaction between MMT and PP.

A comparative analysis of wear resistance and shock resistance tests shows that wear resistance is up to 6 times and at least 2 times higher wear resistance than current products, even considering the limited number of turns due to too much rotation. In the case of shock resistance, there was no problem except 7.5T, but this is only a result of KS test method, so it is deemed that additional fall impact tests by various objects in daily life are needed for practical comparison.
Wear resistance and wear mechanism of hypereutectic Al-($15{\sim}40$)wt%Si alloys were investigated. Primary Si particles under $20{\mu}m$ size were formed in hypereutectic Al-Si alloy powders due to rapid solidification. But the Si particles of extruded bars were finely distributed in smaller size than that of atomized powders. The wear mechanism of hypereutectic Al-Si alloys was divided into three types of wear phenomena, which were abrasive wear, delamination wear and severe adhesive wear according to sliding speed and load. At low sliding speed and load, wear mechanism was abrasive wear, so Al-15wt%Si alloy showed the best wear resistance. At high sliding speed and load, wear mechanism was adhesive wear, and Al-40wt%Si alloy showed the best wear resistance.
Magnesium and its alloys are attracted towards all engineering applications like automotive, marine, aerospace etc. due to its inherent high strength to weight ratio. But, extensive use of Mg alloys is limited to the current scenario because of low wear and corrosion resistance behavior. However, equal channel angular press is one of the severe plastic deformation technique which has been effective method to improve the wear and corrosion resistance by achieving fine grain structure. In this study, the effect of grain refinement on wear and corrosion resistance of AZ80 Mg alloys were investigated. The wear behavior of the coarse and fine-grained Mg alloys was examined through $L_9$ orthogonal array experiments in order to comprehend the wear behavior under varies control parameters. It was shown that ECAPed alloy increased the wear and corrosion resistance of the Mg alloy through the formation of fine grain and uniform distribution of secondary ${\beta}-phase$. Also, the performance of AZ80 Mg alloy for these changeswas discussed through SEM morphology.

In order to get high wear-resistant gold alloy plating on electronic parts, on attempt has been made, in which Cu, Ni, and Zn EDTA salts were added in gold palting solution. The results obtained on the wear resistance are as follows: 1. The addition of 0.5g/ι or over Cu in plating solution, showed 1.5 times more wear resistance than in case of no addition. 2. The addition of 1.5g/ι or over Ni, showed 3.5 times more wear-resistance . 3. The addition of 1.5g/ι and 4.0g/ι Zn , showed 3.5 times and 6.8 times more wear resistance , respectively. 4. The addition of 1.5g/ι Ni and 1.0g/ι Zn simultaneously , showed about 10 times more wear resistance than in case of no addition.
Overlays is a treatment of the surface and near-surface regions of a material to allow the surface to perform functions that are distinct from those frictions demanded far the bulk of the material. Welding, thermal spray, quenching, carburizing and nitration have been used as the surface treatment. Especially, weld overlay is a relatively thick layer of filler metal applied to a carbon or low-alloy steel base metal for the purpose of providing a wear resistant surface. In this study, weld overlay was performed by MAG welding on the base metal(SS400) with filler metal which contain composite powders($Cr_3C_2+Mn+Mo+NbC$) and solid wire(JIS-YGW11). Characteristics of hardness and wear resistance on overlays were analyzed by EDS, EPMA, XRD and microstructures. Carbide formations were $M(Cr, Fe)_7C_3$ and NbC phases. And carbide volume fraction, hardness and specific wear resistance of overlays were increased with increasing powder feed rate and decreasing wire fred rate. Hardness and wear resistance were almost proportioned to carbide volume fraction of overlay.

Austenitic stainless steel has been used as a corrosion resistance material. However, austenitic stainless steel has poor wear resistance property due to its low hardness. In this investigation, we apply powder composite process to obtain hard layer of Stainless steel. The composite material was fabricated from planetary ball milled SUS316L stainless steel powder and WC powder and then sintered by Pulsed Current Sintering (PCS) method. We also added TiC powder as a hard particle in WC layer. Evaluations of wear properties were performed by pin-on-disk wear testing machine, and a remarkable improvement in wear resistance property was obtained.
The wear resistance of P-bronze which is widely used as worm gear material was investigated. In order 1o study the effect of additional elements on the wear resistance of Pbronze, the applied load and sliding time were selected as variables, and SCM4, were used as against metal. The addition of Fe improve wear resistance, for it precipities hard Fe$_3$ P phase and the work hardening coefficients are lowered due to decreasing solubility of P. When Fe is added in conventional P-bronze, the alloy is rather sliding than forming wear debris by frictional force during wear test. Experimental results indicated that the wear mechanisms for P-bronze are mainly consisted of abrasive wear due to Beilby layer forming mechanism and adhesive wear due to thermally activated wear mechanism. Moreover, the weight loss is decreased in accordance with increasing load and time. However the rate of wear loss is decreased as the sliding time is increased.
