  • The magnetization and/or resistivity of high $T_c$ superconductors ($YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$(YBCO) single crystal, $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8$ (Bi-2212) single crystal, $Tl_2Ba_2CaCu_2O_8$ (Tl-2212) film, $HgBa_2Ca_2Cu_3O_8$ (Hg-1223) film) have been measured as a function of magnetic field H and temperature T. The extracted fluctuation part of the magnetization and conductivity exhibits a critical behavior consistent with the three-dimensional XY model. The dynamic critical exponent z does not sensitively vary with a type of the superconductors. The value of z ranges from 1.5 to $1.8{\pm}0.1$. However, the static critical exponent ${\nu}$ is the most largely increased in Tl-2212 that has a weaker interlayer coupling strength than YBCO; the value of ${\nu}$ is 0.669, 0.909, 1.19, and 1.338 for YBCO, Bi-2212, Hg-1223, and Tl-2212 respectively. The results indicate that the weak interlayer coupling along the c-axis of high $T_c$ superconductors near $T_c$ does not influence the dynamic critical exponent z (the same value of superfluid $^4He$), but significantly increases the static critical exponent ${\nu}$.

  • The seismic behavior of a 1/3-scale model of a two-story unreinforced masonry (URM) structure typically used in constructing low-rise residential buildings in Korea is studied through a shaking table test. The purposes of this study are to investigate seismic behavior and damage patterns of the URM structure that was not engineered against seismic loading and to provide its experimental test results. The test structure was symmetric about the transverse axis but asymmetric to some degrees about longitudinal axis and had a relatively strong diaphragm of concrete slab. The test structure was subjected to a series of differentlevels of earthquake shakings that were applied along the longitudinal direction. The measured dynamic response of the test structure was analyzed in terms of various global parameters (i.e., floor accelerations, base shear, floor displacements and storydrift, and torsional displacements) and correlated with the input table motion. Moreover, different levels of seismic performance were suggested for performance-based design approach. The results of the shaking table test revealed that the shear failure was dominant on a weak side of the 1stfloor while the upper part of the test model remained as a rigid body. Also, it was found that substantial strength and deformation capacity existed after cracking.

  • Research has importance in proposing the design of a tunnel with a vertical vent to secure passengers in a comfortable environment and safe against pressure. Using several analysis methods, the magnitude of the pressure induced by the vertical vent in the tunnel can be analyzed. In addition to the 3-dimensional method, the 2-dimensional method and the 2-dimensional axis-symmetric method are also used to analyze the strong and weak points of each so that the optimum analysis method can be obtained. As a result, it appears that the 2-dimensional axis-symmetric method is the most suitable in analyzing tunnel pressure consider to accuracy and time effective aspect. Also, the 3-dimensional method is disadvantageous in that it takes longer in calculating results, but is more effective in predicting phenomena around the vertical vent in the tunnel.

  • It is well known that GPS cannot provide positioning results if sufficient number of visible satellites are not available. To overcome this weak point, attentions have been recently moved to hybrid positioning methods that augments GPS with other sensors. As an extension of hybrid positiong methods, this paper proposes a new method that combines GPS and vision sensor to improve availability and accuracy of land vehicle positioning. The proposed method does not require any external map information and can provide position solutions if more than 2 navigation satellites are visible. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, an experiment result with real measurements is provided and a result shows that accumulated error of n-axis is almost 2.5meters and that of e-axis is almost 3meters in test section.

  • Reduced beam section (RBS) moment resisting connections are among the most economical and practical rigid steel connections developed in the aftermath of the 1994 Northridge and the 1995 Kobe earthquakes. Although the performance of RBS connection has been widely studied, this connection has not been subject to in the skewed conditions. In this study, the seismic performance of dogbone connection was investigated at different angles. The Commercial ABAQUS software was used to simulate the samples. The numerical results are first compared with experimental results to verify the accuracy. Nonlinear static analysis with von Mises yield criterion materials and the finite elements method were used to analyze the behavior of the samples The selected Hardening Strain of materials at cyclic loading and monotonic loading were kinematics and isotropic respectively The results show that in addition to reverse twisting of columns, change in beam angle relative to the central axis of the column has little impact on hysteresis response of samples. Any increase in the angle, leads to increased non-elastic resistance. As for Weak panel zone, with increase of the angle between the beam and the column, the initial submission will take place at a later time and at a larger rotation angle in the panel zone and this represents reduced amount of perpendicular force exerted on the column flange. In balanced and strong panel zones, with increase in the angle between the beam and the central axis of the column, the reduced beam section (RBS), reaches the failure limit faster and at a lower rotation angle. In connection of skewed beam, balanced panel zone, due to its good performance in disposition of plasticity process away from connection points and high energy absorption, is the best choice for panel zone. The ratio of maximum moment developed on the column was found to be within 0.84 to 1 plastic anchor point, which shows prevention of brittle fracture in connections.

  • In order to investigate the environmental properties of set net grounds located in the coastal waters of Yeosu. The current in the vicinity of set net grounds was observed by drogue and current meter in 1990 and 1992. The results obtained are summarized as follows: The direction of tidal current at the north enterance of Yeosu bay was southerly in ebb and northwesterly in flood without the distiction of the neap tide and the spring tide. In spring tide the maximum Velocity of the tidal current was 68 cm/sec in ebb and 66 cm/sec in flood. In neap tide the maximum velocity of the tidal current was 37 cm/sec in ebb and 35 cm/sec in flood. And so the direction of residual current was the south ward mainly and 21 cm/sec. The direction of tidal current at set net fishing grounds was southwesterly in ebb and westerly or northwesterly in flood. Regardless of the distinction of neap and spring. The maximum velocity of the current in spring tide was 50 cm/sec in ebb and 40 cm/sec in flood and that in neap was 28 cm/sec in ebb and 25 cm/sec in flood. In spring tide the speed vector along the major axis of semidiurnal tide component was three times as large as diurnal tide. In neap tide, however, the speed vector was about 50% less then that in spring tide, and the semidiurnal tide and diurnal tide were equal in the size of current ellipse and the direction of major axis. The sea area had a southwesterly residual current. 11 cm/sec in spring tide and 7 cm/sec in neap tide. According to the result of drogue tracking, the vicinity of set net fishing ground had a southerly residual current which formed in Yeosu Bay and a weak westerly residual current toward Dolsando from Namhedo. Therefore, set net fishing ground in coastal water of Yeosu was distributed in boundary of inner water which formed from Seamjin river and offshore water supplied from the vicinity of Sorido and Yochido.

  • Due to the long tectonic history and the very complex geologic formations in Korea, the anisotropic characteristics of subsurface material may often change very greatly and locally. The algorithms commonly used, however, may not give sufficiently precise computational results of traveltime data particularly for the complex and strong anisotropic model, since they are based on the two-dimensional (2D) earth and/or weak anisotropy assumptions. This study is intended to develope a three-dimensional (3D) modeling algorithm to precisely calculate the first arrival time in the complex anisotropic media. Considering the complex geology of Korea, we assume 3D TTI (tilted transversely isotropy) medium having the arbitrary symmetry axis. The algorithm includes the 2D non-linear interpolation scheme to calculate the traveltimes inside the grid and the 3D traveltime mapping to fill the 3D model with first arrival times. The weak anisotropy assumption, moreover, can be overcome through devising a numerical approach of the steepest descent method in the calculation of minimum traveltime, instead of using approximate solution. The performance of the algorithm developed in this study is demonstrated by the comparison of the analytic and numerical solutions for the homogeneous anisotropic earth as well as through the numerical experiment for the two layer model whose anisotropic properties are greatly different each other. We expect that the developed modeling algorithm can be used in the development of processing and inversion schemes of seismic data acquired in strongly anisotropic environment, such as migration, velocity analysis, cross-well tomography and so on.

  • The relation of ferromagnet anisotropic magnetization and the antiferromagnet atomic spin configuration has been investigated for variously angles of unidirectional deposition magnetic field of FeMn layer in Corning glas/Ta(5 nm)/NiFe(7 nm)/FeMn(25 nm)/ Ta(5 nm) multilayer prepared by ion beam deposition. Three unidirectional deposition angles of FeMn layer are $0^{\circ},\;45^{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$, respectively. The exchange bias field ($H_{ex}$) obtained from the measuring easy axis MR loop was decreased to 40 Oe in deposition angle of $45^{\circ}$, and to 0 Oe in the angle of $90^{\circ}$. One other side hand, $H_{ex}$ obtained from the measuring hard axis MR loop was increased to 35 Oe in deposition angle of $45^{\circ}$, and to 79 Oe in the angle of $90^{\circ}$. Although the difference of uniderectional axis between ferromagnet NiFe and antiferromagnet FeMn was 90o, the strong antiferromagnetic dipole moment of FeMn caused to rotate the weak ferromagnetic dipole moment of NiFe in the interface. This result implies that one of origins for exchange coupling mechanism depends on the effect of magnetic field angle during deposition of antiferromgnet FeMn layer.

  • In this paper, fault tolerant mechanisms are presented for a servo manipulator system designed to operate in a hot cell. A hot cell is a sealed and shielded room to handle radioactive materials, and it is dangerous for people to work in the hot cell. So, remote operations are necessary to handle radioactive materials in the hot cell. KAERI has developed a servo manipulator system to perform such remote operations. However, since electric components such as servo motors are weak to radiations, fault tolerant mechanisms have to be considered. For fault tolerance of the servo manipulator system, hardware and software redundancy have been considered. In case of hardware, radioactive resistant electric components such as cables and connectors have been adopted and motors driving a transport have been duplicated. In case of software, a reconfiguration algorithm accommodating one motor's failure has been developed. The algorithm uses redundant axis to recover the end effector's motion in spite of one motor's failure.

  • We describe an all-optical circuit which recognizes the header information of packet-by-packet in the access networks based on FTTH. The circuit's operation is confirmed by an experiment in the recognition of 3 and 4 header bits. The output from the header recognition circuit appears in a signal assigned in the time axis according to the header information. The recognition circuit of header for self-routing has a very simple structure using only delay lines and switches. The circuit is expected that it can be constructed of the high reliability and the low cost. Also, the circuit can solve the problems of the power loss and private security which is the weak point of the TDM-PON method by being established a unique transmission line to each subscriber.
