  • A 2R O/E/O wavelength converter is useful for bit rate transparency, though it has a limit on cascadability due to timing-jitter accumulation. In this paper, we propose a nonlinear signal model which is more practical than the commonly used sine wave model. With our model, we theoretically analyzed the effects of timing-jitter and the cascadability of a 2R O/E/O wavelength converter. To confirm the theoretical results, we measured the cascadability in a 40-km re-circulation loop for 10 Gb/s signal.

  • In this paper, we present a new analytical model that can precisely estimate the blocking performance of wavelength-routed WDM networks with sparse-partial-limited wavelength conversion (SPLWC). The proposed model accounts for the two sources of call blocking in a wavelength converter: range blocking originated from the limited conversion range of a wavelength converter; and capacity blocking induced from the limited number of wavelength converters. Based on the proposed model, we also present a new converter placement algorithm that minimizes the amount of wavelength conversion capability, while satisfying the given constraint on the network-wide blocking probability. From the numerical results obtained from the EON, we demonstrate that the blocking probability of the analytical model closely matches with that of the simulation. We also show that, by efficiently combining the existing sparse, partial, and limited wavelength conversion, the SPL WC can achieve the required blocking performance with the least amount of wavelength conversion cost.

  • By using an XPM (Cross Phase Modulation) wavelength converter, an all-optical AND gate, which is one of six fundamental logic gates, has been demonstrated. The wavelengths for probe and pump signals are 1553.8 and 1545 nm, respectively. First, characteristics of the XPM wavelength converter have been studied. When both probe and pump signals are driven by high power, the output power of the XPM wavelength is high. Based on this fact and the experiment, the all-optical AND gate has been porved. Probe and pump signals are transformed to pulse signals by using Mach-Zehnder modulator, which is induced by a pulse generator. Square pulse signals that are similar to the format of NRZ signals have been generated. By coupling two pulse signals into the XPM wavelength converter, AND characteristics in substantiated.

  • The wavelength converter is considered to be a key element of future dense WDM optical networks. It enables wavelength reuse and resolves contention problem. Moreover, the tunability of the wavelength converter enhance the flexibility of network systems by facilitating reconfigurable dynamic wavelength routing. In order to achieve optically tunable wavelength conversion, we recently proposed and experimentally demonstrated wavelength conversion and tuning based on cascaded sum and difference frequency generation in a Ti:PPLN channel waveguide. • In the next-generation Internet backbone network, DWDM technology was appeared as an alternative to solve circuit shortage of existing TDM-based Internet. In this DWDM Network, it is inevitable to consider wavelength-conversion function as well as RWA in case of setting up connection for the efficient use of resources and customer satisfaction. This study is to describe an efficient strategy for the wavelength-conversion function with a limited range and for the use of a wavelength converter with the selected node, and to verify the optimum use of a wavelength converter through the performance test.

  • A new structure of tunable wavelength converter based on XCM in SOA was tried and analyzed. This converter used single SOA and had very simple structure. In this paper, results were experimentally obtained and demonstrated. Pump signal was generated with NRZ $(PRBS\;2^{31}-1)$ and data rate 2.5 Gbps. WDM multi conveted signals showed more than 8.3 dB extinction ratio. For BER performance, all these converted signals had within 5.0 dB power penalty compared with the pump signal. With these results, we showed that this converter was suitable for 2.5 Gbps WDM multi-channel wavelength converting.

  • We report the first demonstration of 10 Gb/s wavelength conversion in a Mach-Zehnder interferometric wavelength converter monolithically integrated with a loss-coupled DFB probe source. The integrated device is fabricated using a BRS (buried ridge stripe) structure with an undoped InP clad layer on the top of a passive waveguide to reduce high propagation loss. The device exhibited a static extinction ratio of 11 dB. Good performance at 10 Gb/s is obtained with an extinction ratio of 7 dB and a power penalty of 2.8 dB at a 10$^{-9}$ bit error rate.

  • In four-wave-mixing wavelength converter, we investigated the performance through simulation by using VPI tool, changing the input signal power and CW power at 2.SGb/s. Controlling optimal CW power to each input signal power, we extended the input signal power range to 20dB, which guarantees the minimum power penalty.

  • Mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) has to utilize high optical pump power, for its operation principle is based on a nonlinear optical wavelength conversion. In this paper, a low pump-power operation of MSSI-based chromatic dispersion compensation (CDC) has been achieved successfully, for the first time to our knowledge, by introducing a noise pre-reduction scheme in cascaded wavelength conversions with periodically poled $LiNbO_3$ waveguides at a relatively low operation temperature. As preliminary studies, phase-matching properties and operation-temperature dependence of the wavelength converter (WC) were characterized. The WC pumped at 1549 nm exhibited a wide conversion bandwidth of 59 nm covering the entire C-band and a conversion efficiency of -23.6 dB at 11 dBm pump power. CDC experiments were implemented with 2.5 and 10 Gb/s transmission systems over 100 km single-mode fiber. Although it is well-known that the signal distortion due to chromatic dispersion is not critical at a 2.5 Gb/s transmission, the clear recovery of eye patterns was identified. At 10 Gb/s transmission experiments, eye patterns were retrieved distinctly from seriously distorted ones, and notable improvements in bit-error rates were acquired at a low pump power of 14 dBm.

  • A pre-amplified semiconductor optical amplifier-Mach-Zehnder interferometer(SOA-MZI) wavelength converter (WC) using a continuous wave-holding beam(CW-HB) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated at 10Gb/s. The proposed scheme achieves not only enhancement of input power dynamic range(IPDR) to over 20dB but also higher Q parameter of about 2 to 3 by no output signal distortion and higher extinction ratio(ER) of about 2dB to 5dB by low noise figure (NF), compared with the bias current control method.
