  • This paper describes the experimental method of a pod-type waterjet propulsion system in a towing tank and shows the experimental analysis and test results of a designed waterjet propulsion system to be used for a hybrid high speed craft. The cruising performance of this craft is estimated from the results of the hull resistance test and waterjet test under the assumption that the interaction between the hull and the inlet pod is very small. A pod-type waterjet system with an axial pump was designed and a stand-alone waterjet experimental system was developed. Useful data such as the pump performance, the jet efficiency, the losses of inlet duct and nozzle were obtained. Test results show a good agreement with the design requirement.

  • This study describes sea trial tests for a waterjet propulsion system attached in the hybrid super high speed cargo ship named "Narae". A measuring technique of jet velocity, gross thrust and impeller torque for the waterjet system is explained. From the measured data in sea trial test, performance of the waterjet propulsion system is analyzed and compared with model test results of a similar waterjet system which was carried out in 1996. The erective horse power estimated from sea trial tests shows a good agreement with resistance test results of the model ship. The optimum rising height is estimated as 0.75 m, and the overall efficiency of the waterjet system is predicted as 0.315 at 15 knots. Useful data such as the pump performance, the jet efficiency, the losses of inlet duct and nozzle were obtained. Test results show a similar behavior to the model test results.

  • In order to control the weight balance of the waterjet propulsion ship, the pump's weight needed to be decreased. We reduced length of pump hub, overall length of pump and chord length of impeller and stator. To keep pump efficiency and cavitation performance similar to the $1^{st}$design pump, optimum design and experiment were conducted. This paper describes experimental method and numerical analysis for pump design. At the blade design stage, performance analysis of the pump is conducted using commercial CFD codes ($BladeGen^+$,CFX-10). Required performance and cavitation characteristics of the design pumps were measured and observed using the stand-alone test apparatus. The weight of the pump was successfully decreased through a series of pump design processes composed of blade design, performance analysis and model test.

  • A study of design and analysis for the POD type waterjet is conducted. The analysis and design of waterjet system are more difficult than that of conventional propulsor because waterjet is complicatedly composed of many parts which are impeller, stator, inlet, nozzle, etc. The streamline method is traditionally used in the design of pump whose characteristics are similar to those of waterjet. This streamline method, however, has some limitation in analysis of a viscous flow as well as the interaction of inlet part of hull. In the present study, the developed CFD program is applied to the analysis of POD type waterjet. The developed program is first validated by comparing the existed experimental results. The designed waterjet system is also analyzed by the developed CFD program and analyzed results show that the performance of the present POD type waterjet is above the requirement.

  • A waterjet propulsion system has many advantages compared with a conventional screw propeller especially for amphibious military vehicles because of a good maneuverability at low speed, good operating ability at shallow water, high thrust at low speed to aid maneuverability and exit from water, etc. Especially, compact design is important for the tracked-vehicle because of buoyancy in water and available space inside the tracked vehicle. The experiment is parametrically performed for various impeller diameters for more compact design. The experimental results are analyzed according to the ITTC 1996 standard analysis method as well as the conventional propulsive factor analysis method. The full-scale effective and delivered power of the tracked-vehicle are evaluated according to the variation of impeller diameter. This paper emphasized the effect of impeller diameter on the performance of waterjet system.

  • A waterjet propulsion system has many advantages compared with a conventional screw propeller especially for amphibious armored wheeled vehicles because of a good maneuverability at low speed, good operation ability at shallow water, high thrust at low speed to aid maneuverability and exit from water, etc. The POD type waterjet is adequate for the present wheeled vehicle because the weight is lighter and L/B is longer than the conventional armored amphibious vehicle. Resistance and self-propulsion tests with a 1/3.5-scale model are conducted at PNU towing tank. Based on these measurements, the performance is analyzed according to ITTC 96 standard analysis method and also according to the conventional propulsive factor analysis method. Based on these two methods, the full-scale effective and delivered powers of amphibious armored wheeled vehicle are estimated. This paper emphasizes the analysis method of model test of the waterjet propulsion system for a amphibious armored wheeled vehicle and the model test technique together with the comparison of the two analysis methods.

  • The aim of this paper is to analyze the steady performance of POD-type waterjet system by panel method. A surface panel method is applied to the present analysis. To analyze the compound propulsor. analysis program has been developed based on a perturbation potential method. The developed code has been validated by comparing the experimental data of shrouded propeller. The validated code has been applied to the POD-type waterjet system which can be used for the propulsion of amphibious vehicle. The computed results have been compared with experimental results. which shows a good agreement between them.

  • In order to investigate efficiency and flowfield charateristics of the intake-diffuser for the ship waterjet propulsion, new experimental verification technology was set up in the cavitation tunnel. 1-hole and 5-hole pilot tubes were designed and manufactured to measure the pressure and velocity distributions at intake-diffuser entrance and impeller inlet. The calibration of the 5-hole pilot tubes is conducted at the cavitation tunnel The cavitation inception occurs at the intake lip, and the occurrence position depends on IVR (Inlet Velocity Ratio) condition. The present experimental device will be applied sufficiently for the development of the design and performance improvement technologies.

  • The waterjet is very widely used today in propulsion system of high speed vessel but manufacturer is limited because of an efficiency and a difficulty of a manufacture on the inlet configuration of the waterjet. The importancy in designing the inlet configuration of the waterjet lies on the minimization of the cavitation which is largely affecting the efficiency. In this paper, the configuration analysis is carried out to find a optimum shape which is minimizing the cavitation using a two dimensional potential-based panel method with an inlet configuration of a flush type. Also, it is developed a direct design method finding an inlet configuration by a given pressure distributions. The numerically obtained optimum shape using this configuration analysis method show a good agreement compared to the Kashiwadani's results. It is carried out a direct design method over a lip and a ramp of an inlet configuration wish pressure distributions obtained a result of the configuration analysis and the results show a good agreement compared to original configuration.

  • The performance of the waterjet system of 180 ton class fishing guard ship has been experimentally studied. A waterjet propulsion system has many advantages in comparison with a conventional screw propeller especially for high speed craft because of its good cavitation performance. Recently waterjet system has been applied to fishing boats and fishing guard ship because of avoiding a net problem although their speeds are not so high. This paper describes experimental procedure and analysis method of resistance and self-propulsion tests with a 1/14.46-scale model. Experimental results were analyzed according to ITTC 96 standard method. The full-scale effective power and delivered power of the ship were also analyzed and the full-scale speed predicted from the model test results shows a good agreement with the full-scale result from the sea trial tests.
