  • This study describes the results of Coefficient of Performance(COP) analysis by cycle simulation for two types of absorption-compression hybrid cycle using the Water/Lithium Bromide solution pair. These types are basic hybrid systems introducing a mechanical compression process into the refrigerant vapor phase of the single effect absorption cycle. In absorption-compression hybrid cycles, coefficient of performance is improved compared with absorption cycle. Hybrid cycle Type 2 is considered as a key technology to support energy utilization system, given its capability of utilizing waste heat to drive system with a high level of efficiency.

  • The amount of evapotranspiration (water absorption) according to wind speed showed the same trend in gold mound (Spiraea × bumalda), Japanese spurge (Pachysandra terminalis), and ivy (Hedera japonica Tobler). All the three plants showed maximum water absorption at 4 m·s-1; water absorption tended to decrease as wind speed decreased. The control group without wind speed treatment had the most amount of water absorption compared with the groups that were subjected to wind exposure. However, the plant growth of all three plants increased to the maximum value when wind speeds were 2 and 1 m·s-1. When comparing the relationship among water absorption, air temperature, and relative humidity, the water absorption of plants tended to be low from May 20 to 26, when air temperature and relative humidity were the lowest. The results of this study will help establish an urban wall-planting system taking building wind into consideration. Further, this study may help in the selection of plant types for ecological parks in windy islands.

  • A common problem with fast-growing hardwoods is dimensional instability that limits use of their wood. In this study, we investigated the effects of pre-drying methods, temperatures, and heating duration on the specific gravity, water absorption, and dimensional stability of three tropical fast-growing hardwoods, jabon (Neolamarckia cadamba Roxb.), sengon (Falcataria moluccana Miq.), and mangium (Acacia mangium Willd.). Wood samples were pre-dried by two methods (fan and oven at $40^{\circ}C$), and heat treatments were performed at three temperatures (120, 150, and $180^{\circ}C$) for two different time periods (2 and 6 hours). The specific gravity, water absorption, dimensional stability, and structural changes of the samples were evaluated. The results revealed that heat treatments slightly reduced the specific gravity of all three wood species. In addition, the heat treatments reduced water absorption and significantly improved dimensional stability of the samples. Oven pre-drying followed by heat treatment at $180^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours resulted in good physical improvement of jabon and sengon wood. Fan pre-drying followed by heat treatment at $180^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours improved the physical properties of mangium wood. The heat treatment shows a promising technique for improving the physical characteristic of fast growing hardwoods.

  • Geothermal water at moderate temperature in a range between 30 to $50^{\circ}C$ exists sparse in surroundings. Mostly they are utilized as heat or water source at spar zones in Korea. However, a large portion of used water is discarded due to its poor recovery quality and inferior application technologies. In this research, an innovative heat pump system based on the hybrid concept that combinate compression cycle and absorption cycle was investigated mathematically. The hybrid heat pump aims to recycle various kind of the heat sources at moderate temperature including geothermal water effectively. The prime objective of the simulation is to design a compression/absorption hybrid heat pump system which can make high temperature above the level of $90^{\circ}C$ and low temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ as well at the same using $50^{\circ}C$ geothermal heat water. As a result, primitive data was provided as a basis to design a prototype 3 RT class hybrid heat pump.

  • The corrosion behavior of aluminum pad coated with epoxy molding compound (EMC) was investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The impedance change was evaluated by the absorption of deionized water (DI water) to EMC coating and the interface between EMC and aluminum. During the absorption a decrease in resistance and thus an increase in capacitance of EMC as well as the interface of EMC/Al could be observed. Up to about 170 hours of absorption the EMC was saturated with the water molecules and ions generated from EMC. Subsequently the ionic water was penetrated to the interface and finally the corrosion of aluminum was occurred by the Dl water and ions. From measuring the adhesion strength with the Dl water absorption it was expected that the saturation of water and ions in the interface decreased the adhesion strength. The higher filler content of EMC should be necessary to inhibit the corrosion of aluminum electrode in microelectronic packages.

  • The effect of fly ash addition to the kaolin block has been investigated. The addition affected the firing temperature and physical properties such as water absorption and compressive strength. The starting materials were from korea natural resources and the fly ash were from the power plant using coal as fuel, containing free carbon of 8∼9 wt%. The starting natural materials were mixed with 5 different proportions of fly ash, pressed and then sintered at 1050, 1100, 1150 and 1200${\circ}C$. With sintering temperature, water absorption decreased and compressive strength increased. When specimens were sintered at the temperature lower than 1100${\circ}C$, water absorption increased and strength decreased with fly ash content. In contrast, when sintering was done at the temperature higher than 1150${\circ}C$, water absorption increased with fly ash content similarly but strength was improved.

  • Recently, more interests in surface treatment of structure with water repellent agent are steadily increased, But, investigation of its properties such as protection, durability, morphology of micro structure is not sufficient. Therefore, This paper is aimed for the investigation of water repellent property and change of morphology of micro pores in mortar that is treated by water repellent agent(Inorganic polymer based material). Water repellent property, water absorption coefficient, air permeability, porosity and the observation of micro structure was investigated in different water repellent agent type. The test results indicated that water repellent treated mortar showed low absorption coefficient and air permeability(breathing effect). This is why inorganic polymer is coated at the wall of capillary and micro pores, also, the volume of micro pore is reduced without the change of morphology in micro structure.

  • This is a basic study of Cheong-song mineral water, which has high contents of Ca and Mg for making noodles as well as for general cooking. The test results of the noodles manufactured and cooked with mineral water were compared to those manufactured and cooked with distilled water and tap water. Noodles manufactured with mineral water showed higher values than others in the cooked weight, volume, water absorption ability, turbidity, lightness (L) and redness (a) on the minus scale. This means that we can manufacture cooked noodles that have high weight, high volume, high water absorption ability and high lightness (L) along with a slight green color with Cheong-song mineral water. Cooked noodles manufactured with mineral water showed significant differences in the cooked weight and volume compared to those manufactured with distilled water. Also, cooked noodles manufactured with mineral water showed significant differences in moisture absorption, turbidity, lightness (L), redness (a) and yellowness (b) compared to those manufactured with distilled water and tap water. Commercial noodles cooked in mineral water showed significant differences in the cooked weight and redness (a) compared to those cooked in distilled water and tap water. Further, commercial noodles cooked in mineral water showed significant differences in weight, volume and brightness (L) compared to those cooked in distilled water.
