  • Haloacetic acids (HAAs) concentrations have been observed to decreased at drinking water distribution system extremities. This decrease is associated with microbiological degradation by pipe wall biofilm. The objective of this study was to evaluate HAAs degradation in a drinking water system in the presence of a biofilm and to identify the factors that influence this degradation. Degradation of monochloroacetic acid (MCAA), dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) was observed in a simulated distribution system. The results obtained showed that different parameters came into play simultaneously in the degradation of HAAs, including retention time, water temperature, biomass, and composition of organic matter. Seasonal variations had a major effect on HAAs degradation and biomass quantity (ATP concentration) was lower by 25% in the winter compared with the summer.

  • In this study, we try to find the root cause of water condensing failures in a headlamp using chemical and mechanical analysis. Through the surface inspection by OM, SEM and CT, it was found that water infiltrate into the headlamp through hotmelt adhesive debonding part caused by adhesion force degradation and poor quality. IR spectra shows that adhesion force degradation are characterized by increase of some functional group(1742, 1710, 1649, 1016). Through the ESPI measurement, it is turned out that bonding structural change by thermal expansion and degradation of adhesive can be the cause of void generation. So it is recommended that cooling passage and the bonding part should be redesigned to give a guarantee of less thermal stress and high adhesion quality.

  • This study was carried out comparing with ozone oxidation and photocatalytic degradation for removal of geosmin. In the change of pH, Ozonation, UV-Germicidal lamp and Halogen lamp irradiation and Halogen $lamp/TiO_2$ Powder was very slowly changing, but UV-Germicidal $lamp/TiO_2$ Powder was rapidly changed from 7.0 to 7.7 until 300min of irradiation time, and varied a little after. Geosmin degradation ratio was as following, UV-Germicidal $lamp/TiO_2$ $Powder(200mg/L){\geq}O_3$ > UV-Germicidal $lamp/TiO_2$ $Pw(100mg/L)$ > UV-Germicidal lamp > Halogen lamp. The result of investigation of generated by-products were 3-Heptanone, two sort of aldehydes and three sort of alcohols by ozonation. But It was not generated by photocatalytic degradation.

  • The purposes of the paper are to estimate welfare change from water quality degradation by using contingent valuation method in Namdae stream of Gangrung and identify what factors of Namdae stream are important to Gangrun citizens. The study results show their total WTP per year and per household, \117,040 to improve Namdae stream quality from grade 3 to grade 1, including monetary WTP \87,502 plus opportunity cost of volunteering time for protection campaign, \29,538. The amount of total welfare change from water quality degradation based on the total WTP estimated above is calculated to be \27 billion of which the amount, as a sort of damage cost from water quality degraded, is so huge. All projects and policies related to natural environments, therefore, should consider both indirect and direct effects from them because natural environments have the irreversibility once degraded or deteriorated and would ultimately be influential on humans, both current and future generations, with tremendous amounts of time and costs beyond our imagination.

  • Fresh water lake was developed as a result of tidal land reclamation of the Sukmoon area. Water quality of lake has been monitored before and after sea-dike construction. Water quality degradation has been observed after Sukmoon sea-dike construction. In this paper observed water quality of the Sukmoon lake is presented and possible measures to improve water quality are also discussed.

  • The performance of concrete mainly depend upon its water-cement ratio. If water percentage is excess in concrete, it may cause the degradation of performance. Because of these reasons, the change of water content is managed by using various evaluation method of unit water content. And criterion for the change of water content is regulated and used. However the criterion is set only considering production error and measurement error but criterion does not consider performance degradation of concrete. Therefore this study tries to investigate degradation of performance while adding extra water by artificial manipulation or management error in concrete, The contents of extra water for tests are set as 0, 20, 40, 60kg/m3, to examine the performance degradation of concrete, strength, shrinkage, cracks, carbonation are tested This study conclude that, when extra water content is excess than 20kg/m3 in concrete, then performance level of concrete declined rapidly. 80 it is very important to maintain quality of concrete for its better performance.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the degradation and mineralization of PPCPs (Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products) using a CBD(Collimated Beam Device) of UV/H2O2 advanced oxidation process. The decomposition rate of each substance was regarded as the first reaction rate to the ultraviolet irradiation dose. The decomposition rate constants for PPCPs were determined by the concentration of hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet irradiation intensity. If the decomposition rate constant is large, the PPCPs concentration decreases rapidly. According to the decomposition rate constant, chlortetracycline and sulfamethoxazole are expected to be sufficiently removed by UV irradiation only without the addition of hydrogen peroxide. In the case of carbamazepine, however, very high UV dose was required in the absence of hydrogen peroxide. Other PPCPs required an appropriate concentration of hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet irradiation intensity. The UV dose required to remove 90% of each PPCPs using the degradation rate constant can be calculated according to the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in each sample. Using this reaction rate, the optimum UV dose and hydrogen peroxide concentration for achieving the target removal rate can be obtained by the target PPCPs and water properties. It can be a necessary data to establish design and operating conditions such as UV lamp type, quantity and hydrogen peroxide concentration depending on the residence time for the most economical operation.

  • Nowadays, wells tapping the deep aquifers become general because water quality of the shallow groundwater has been gradually degraded over the last 30 years as a result of rapid industrialization and intensive agricultural activities. However, many of the deep wells also suffer problems of water-quality degradation in several years after the well installation, nevertheless those were properly completed and managed. It is believed that the heavy pumping from deep wells causes the doward movement of the contaminated, shallow groundwaters and introduces them into the deep aquifers. In this study, we introduces a shallow capture well system, which could effectively prevent the shallow groundwaters of poor water duality from moving into the deep aquifers by pumping of deep production wells. Even though additional costs are required to apply this system, we believe that this method could be appropriate for the deep wells that are important for the public health.

  • In Korea, groundwater quality is monitored through National Groundwater Quality Monitoring Network (NGQMN) administered by Ministry of Environment. For a given contaminant, compliance to groundwater quality standards is assessed on a annual basis by monitoring the number of incidents that concentration exceeds the regulatory limit. However, this approach provides only a fractional information about groundwater quality degradation, and more crucial information such as location and severity of the contamination cannot be obtained. For better groundwater quality management on a watershed, a more spatially informative and intuitive method is required. This study presents two statistical methods to convert point-wise monitoring data into information on groundwater quality status of a watershed by using a proposed grading scale. The proposed grading system is based on readily available reference standards that classify the water quality into 4 grades. The methods were evaluated with NO3-, Cl-, and total coliform data in Geum River basin. The analyses revealed that groundwater in most watersheds of Geum River basin is good for domestic or/and drinking with no treatment. But, there was notable quality degradation in Bunam seawall and So-oak downstream standard watersheds contaminated by NO3- and Cl-, respectively.

  • Recently, Advanced water treatment facilities with Ozone are being introduced owing to domestic water pollution. However, waterproofing/corrosion prevention construction method of concrete structure for existing advanced water treatment makes waterproofing/corrosion prevention materials and concrete deteriorated because of strong oxidation of ozone. it causes increase of maintenance cost and water quality degradation. Therefore, in this study, it will figure out problems of waterproofing/corrosion prevention construction method being applied to through existing studies.
