  • In this study, we used the hybrid module that was composed of granular activated carbons (GAC) packing between module inside and outside of tubular ceramic microfiltration membrane for advanced drinking water treatment. Instead of natural organic matters (NOM) and fine inorganic particles in natural water source, modified solution was prepared with humic acid and kaolin. We were investigated effect of water-back-flushing time (BT) and water-back-flushing period (FT) to minimize membrane fouling and to enhance permeate flux (J) in the hybrid process, and tried to find the optimal operating conditions. As a result, resistance of membrane fouling ($R_f$) was slightly decreased according to increasing BT. Also, the shorter FT was the more effective to reduce $R_f$ and to enhance J because of frequent water-back-flushing. However, the optimal BT and FT conditions were 10 sec and 8 min respectively when operating costs were considered. Then, the optimal conditions derived from our experiments of modified solution were applied to lake water treatment. As a result, average treatment efficiencies of turbidity, $UV_{254}$ absorbance, and $COD_{Mn}$ were very high as 99.11%, 91.40% and 89.34%, respectively, but that of TDS was low as 30.05%.

  • In this study, we treated lake water by 2 kinds of multichannel ceramic micro filtration membranes. We could investigate effects of $N_2-back-flushing$ time (BT) and transmembrane pressure (TMP), and find optimal operating conditions. The BT were changed in $10{\sim}60$ sec, TMP in $0.6{\sim}2.0$ bar at fixed filtration time (FT) 8 min, flow rate 2.0 L/min and back-flushing pressure 2.0 bar. Also, the optimal conditions were discussed in the viewpoints of resistance of membrane fouling $(R_f)$, dimensionless permeate flux $(J/J_o)$, permeate flux (J) and total permeate volume $(V_T)$. As result, optimal back-flushing conditions for HC04 ($0.4{\mu}m$ pore size) and HC10 membrane $(1.0{\mu}m)$ were BT=10 sec and BT=20 sec, respectively. Then, higher TMP should increase the driving force, and could produce more VT. Average rejection rates of pollutants were higher than 95.4% for turbidity, $12.7{\sim}20.1%\;for\;COD_{Mn},\;0.0{\sim}6.4%\;for\;NH_3-N,\;1.9{\sim}4.6%$ for T-N and $34.9{\sim}88.4%$ for T-P.

  • The effect of water back-flushing period (filtration time, FT) was investigated in hybrid process of alumina microfiltration and photocatalyst for advanced drinking water treatment in this study, and compared with the previous studies with carbon microfiltration or alumina ultrafiltration membranes. The FT was changed in the range of 2~10 min with fixed 10 sec of BT. Then, the FT effects on resistance of membrane fouling ($R_f$), permeate flux (J) and total permeate volume ($V_T$) were observed during total filtration time of 180 min. As decreasing FT, $R_f$ decreased and J increased as decreasing FT, which was same with the previous results with carbon microfiltration or alumina ultrafiltration membranes. The treatment efficiency of turbidity was high beyond 98.1%, and the effect of FT was not shown on treatment efficiency of turbidity, which was same with the previous result of carbon microfiltration. The treatment efficiency of organic matters was the highest value of 89.6 % at FT 8 min, which was a little higher than those of the previous results, and the effect of FT was not shown on treatment efficiency of organic matters.

  • For hybrid water treatment of carbon fiber ultrafiltration and photocatalyst, we used the hybrid module that was composed of photocatalyst packing between tubular membrane outside and module inside. Photocatalyst was PP (polypropylene) bead coated with $TiO_2$ powder by CVD (chemical vapor deposition) process. Water back-flushing of 10 sec was performed per every period of 10 min to minimize membrane fouling for modified solution, which was prepared with humic acid and kaolin. Resistance of membrane fouling ($R_f$) decreased as humic acid concentration changed from 10 mg/L to 2 mg/L, and finally the highest total permeate volume ($V_T$) could be obtained at 2 mg/L, which was the same with the previous results. Then, treatment efficiencies of turbidity and humic acid were above 98.9% and 88.7%, respectively, those did not depend on the humic acid concentration. However, the treatment efficiency of humic acid increased a little as the humic acid concentration increased in the previous results.

The treatment efficiency of organic matters was the lowest value of 65.6% at NBF, and it increased as decreasing FT, which was different with the previous result, too. The reason was that the membrane fouling phenomena could show a different mechanism depending on ceramic membrane materials.

  • The $N_2$ back-flushing period (FT) and time (BT) were investigated in hybrid process of ceramic microfiltration and PES (polyethersulfone) beads loaded with titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) photocatalyst for advanced drinking water treatment in viewpoints of membrane fouling resistance ($R_f$), permeate flux (J), and total permeate volume ($V_T$). As decreasing FT and increasing BT, $R_f$ decreased and J increased, and finally the maximum $V_T$ could be acquired at FT 10 min and BT 30 sec. In FT effect experiment, treatment efficiencies of turbidity and dissolved organic matters (DOM) were the highest at no back-flushing (NBF) because of dramatic membrane fouling. As result of BT effect, the treatment efficiencies were the maximum at BT 30 sec, which was different with the FT result. Because the photocatalyst beads could be cleaned effectively as decreasing FT and increasing BT, turbidity treatment efficiency increased a little from 95.4% to 97.5% as decreasing FT, and from 95.9% to 98.5% as increasing BT. Also DOM treatment efficiency increased from 70.8% to 80.6% as decreasing FT, and from 75.1% to 85.8% as increasing BT. The optimal condition, where the treatment efficiencies and $V_T$ were the maximum, should be FT 10 min and BT 30 sec in our experimental range.

  • In this study, sodium dedocyl sulfate (SDS), which was anionic surfactant, was added for forming micelles to remove ferrous ions that could be contained with a small amount in industrial water. Then aggregates were formed by adsorption or binding of ferrous ions on the surface of micelles, and then rejected by ceramic membranes to remove ferrous ions. Ferrous concentration was fixed at 1mM and SDS was changed as $0{\sim}10mM$ to investigate the effect of the anionic surfactant. As a result, rejection rate of ferrous was the highest to 88.97% at 6mM. And we used ELS (Electrophoretic Light Scattering Spectrometer) to investigate particle size distribution of micellar aggregates depending on SDS concentration. Then distribution of large aggregates was the highest at 6mM. And we investigated effects of $N_2$-back-flushing time (BT) during periodic $N_2$-back-flushing on ceramic membranes. Finally optimal $N_2$-BT for NCMT-723l (pore size $0.10{\mu}m$) membrane was 20 sec.

However, treatment portions of humic acid by adsorption and photo-oxidation were above 10.7 and 8.6%, respectively.
