Nanowastes treatment in environmental media

  • Objectives This paper tried to review a recent research trend for the environmental exposure of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) and its removal efficiency in the nanowaste treatment plants. Methods The studies on the predicted environmental concentrations (PEC) of ENMs obtained by exposure modeling and treatment (or removal) efficiency in nanowaste treatment facilities, such as wastewater treatment plant (WTP) and waste incineration plant (WIP) were investigated. The studies on the landfill of nanowastes also were investigated. Results The Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology group has led the way in developing methods for estimating ENM production and emissions. The PEC values are available for surface water, wastewater treatment plant effluents, biosolids, sediments, soils, and air. Based on the PEC modeling, the major routes for the environmental exposure of the ENMs were found as WTP effluents/sludge. The ENMs entered in the WTP were 90-99% removed and accumulated in the activated sludge and sludge cake. Additionally, the waste ash released from the WIP contain ENMs. Ultimately, landfills are the likely final destination of the disposed sludge or discarded ENMs products. Conclusions Although the removal efficiency of the ENMs using nanowaste treatment facilities is acceptable, the ENMs were accumulated on the sludge and then finally moved to the landfill. Therefore, the monitoring for the ENMs in the environment where the WTP effluent is discharged or biomass disposed is required to increase our knowledge on the fate and transport of the ENMs and to prevent the unintentional exposure (release) in the environment.

  • The comparative evaluation is the most effective method for site selection because the selection of waste treatment facility is to determine the optimum site out of limited candidate sites. This study adopted the ordinal scale evaluation, one of methods of comparative evaluation. The ordinal scale evaluation aims to determine the investigating items referring to the character of sites, to determine the importance factors for investigating items, and to determine the optimum site according to the quantitative evaluation. As a result of this study, the defects of the former reports on the environmental characteristics, such as obscurity of meaning and subjective statement, were reduced by the ordinal scale evaluation which is one of the quantitative evaluation methods. This ordinal scale evaluation method has some valuable advantages, such as, to be able to consider the cost-effect efficiency, to consider the objectiveness and the clearness of the reports on the environmental characteristics. Therefore the reducement of social complications about site selection of the indisposed facilities could be expected by this study.

CFD를 이용한 쓰레기 처리시설의 악취확산 예측에 관한 연구 (A Study on Odor Dispersion Prediction of Waste Treatment Facilities Using CFD)

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate efficiently an odor dispersion from waste treatment facility for a crematory and a neighborhood facility, then propose planning, a location of an opening or the arrangement of the trees. Hence, offer a comfortable environment for a resident. For this, first the research data about estimating odor dispersion from waste treatment facility and odor are analyzed, then research an ingredient, characteristic, a direct effect for human and a method of measurement. Second, with on-site survey, check odorimetry and the source of odor dispersion, then apply this to the boundary condition of CFD simulation. Third, analyse by the hour for the 2008 standard weather data of Cheon-an, then apply summer data that odor dispersion is active, winter data relatively slow and an annual mean velocity and wind to the simulation. Even if a crematory and neighborhood facility located on south and north from waste treatment facility are at the low rate, the south and north wind will be applied to the simulation. Fourth, with CFD simulation result, predict an odor dispersion, then propose a solution which is considered an odor dispersion, a location of an opening and the arrangement of the trees. Consequently, this study will have an effect on an environment of a resident.

  • The specified industrial wastes increased 26% annually during the last 5 years from 1984 to 1988 in Korea, and the special treatment and proper management are required. The effective methods are studied on the process of generation, keeping, transportation, and treatment/disposal for specified industrial wastes and materials. Also, in this paper, the author describes the plans to develop the public disposal facilities and manage specific industrial waste properly in Korea.

서울시 생활폐기물 적환장 운영실태 분석 및 제언 (Review and Suggestion for Waste Transfer Stations in Seoul)

  • 서울시 25개 자치구가 운영하는 생활폐기물 적환시설을 대상으로 시설의 기능, 지역 친화성, 규범 순응성 등의 3개 영역에 대해 현황을 분석하고 개선방안을 모색하였다. 65개 적환장 중 46개소는 매일 반출이 필요한 대량폐기물을, 19개소는 3~30일 범위에서 체류 후 반출되는 소량폐기물을 다루었다. 57%의 시설이 주거지역과 상업지역에 설치되어 있었다. 또한 57%의 적환장은 나대지 위에 장비만 두고서 적환작업을 하였다. 79%의 적환장은 재활용선별장 같은 시설과 근접하지 않고 독립적으로 존재했다. 도시계획법의 의한 환경기초시설로 지정된 경우는 17%에 불과했고, 폐기물관리법의 규정대로 허가받은 수집 운반업자가 운영하는 적환장은 31% 수준이었다. 적환장은 그 역할에서 시설 최적화, 자원화 확대 같은 정부의 폐기물관리 정책과 부합하였으나 주거지역이나 상업지역 같은 도심에 입지하기에는 환경대책이 미흡하고 규범과 불일치하는 면이 있었다. 앞으로 적환장이 도심의 환경기초시설로 자리매김하려면 건물 밀폐화, 기능의 종합화 등의 과제를 풀어야 한다.

각종 유기성오니의 성상분석에 의한 퇴비화가능성의 검토 (Investigation on Posssiblility of Composting by Properties Analysis of Organic Sludge Composts)

  • 일반항목의 분석에서는 함수율 및 유기물농도에 있어서 처리장별 업종별로 큰 차이는 없었으며, 유기물함량과 함수량간에 상관관계는 높지 않았다. 중금속항목에 대한 오염기여도를 보면 하 폐수 및 사업장오니의 42건 중 비료관리법의 기준을 초과하는 것은 주로 As, Hg 및 Cr이었으며, As는 42건중 28건(67%), Hg는 21건(50%) 및 Cr은 9건(21%)으로 나타나 다른 항목보다 상대적으로 많이 오염되는 것으로 특성을 파악할 수 있었다. 상기와 같은 분석항목외에 선진국의 일부국가에서 규제하고 있는 기타 중금속 및 유해성 유기화합물 대하여 분석한 결과, Be, Se, Mo등 외국에서 규제하고 있는 농도에 비교해서는 아직까지 낮은 농도로 검출되었으며, 유기화합물 중에 PCBs는 10건 시료평균은 26.2 ppb 였으며 가장 높은 값은 하수처리종말처리사업소 발생한 오니로서 162.6 ppb 이었고, 낮은 곳은 피혁제조업의 하수오니로서 2.14ppb이었다. 각종 슬러지에 의하여 생산되어 유통되고 있는 시료를 수거하여 분석한 결과, 대부분 규제 값을 만족하고 있었으나, 크롬에서 농도에 상회하는 제품이 있었다. 현재의 각종유해물질에 의하여 재자원화에 장해가 되는 오염물질이 다수 관찰된 것으로 앞으로 면밀한 검토를 통하여 용도별 사용이 필요하며, 각종 슬러지의 재활용을 위해서는 규제 값을 상회하는 처리업소에서는 특정성분의 발생억제를 통한오염물의 저감노력도 필요할 것이다.

Development of Composting Technology in Animal Waste Treatment - Review -

  • Solid animal wastes in Japan are treated mainly by composting. The composting process under controlled conditions is able to convert the wastes into high-quality organic fertilizer. Various types of composting facilities with/without forced aeration and turning device are available. Characterization of the maturing process during composting was studied, to improve the quality of compost and to make the degree of maturity. Recycling of animal wastes as compost without any environmental pollution will be closely related to the development of sustainable agriculture with organic fertilizer in Japan.

하수오니 처리시설 현황분석을 통한 처리체계 개선 방안 연구 (A Study on an Improvement for Management System of Municipal Sewage Sludge through an investigation of MSS Treatment Facilities)

  • 본 연구에서는 '05년도 기준 전국 23개소의 하수오니처리시설의 현황 및 문제점을 다각적으로 분석하고, 이를 바탕으로 향후 효율적인 하수오니처리 체계 개선 방안을 위해 요구되는 사항에 관하여 검토 하였다. 전국 23개 하수오니처리시설 현황 분석 결과에 따르면, 6개 시설은 시설운영에 있어서 경제성확보가 어려워 정상가동에 큰 어려움이 있는 것으로 조사되었으며, 2개 시설은 시설운영과 관련한 기술성의 부족으로 인해 적정 운영에 장애가 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 또한, 상당수 시설은 환경적 문제(악취, 폐수발생)로 인한 지역주민의 민원제기가 시설 운영에 있어서 큰 어려움으로 작용하는 것으로 나타났다. 우리나라는 아직까지 폐기물처리에 있어서 효율적인 시설설치 및 운영을 위한 별도의 지침서(Guide Line)제공이 외국에 비해 활성화되어 있지 못하며, 초기 시설설치 시, 하수오니처리에 따른 환경적 경제적 기술적인 측면을 모두 만족할 수 있는 사전 검토가 불충분하게 이루어져왔다. 따라서 보다 효율적이며, 안정적인 하수오니 처리체계 기반을 마련하기 위해서는 오니처리와 관련한 종합적인 대책이 미흡한 현 시점에서 선진외국과 같이 유기성오니의 처리 및 관리의 전반적인 내용을 다루는 지침서(가이드라인) 마련이 요구되며, 정부 관계부처에서는 일시적이며, 단편적인 행정 대책 보다는 해당 부서 간의 원활한 조정 및 합의에 의한 종합적인 대책 마련이 요구된다.

This study has focussed on reflecting the opinion of residents to the maximum extent with a weight on social and economic aspects, considering the state of confrontation against each other between the autonomous government organization and local residents, which is being emerged as a social issue relating to the evaluation rating on each item of site selection of an optimum site. Therefore, rational, and clear validity investigations and proper reduction of both time and expenses in site selection as well through this a study.

  • The research for development of remote monitoring and control systems composed three stages of research categories. At the first stage, we decided the suitable instrumentation devices for interface between H/W systems and waste water treatment facility. And at the second stage, we developed the software package for remote monitoring and data transmission system including data receipt system via wired telephone line.
