  • This study was conducted to examine the present state, types of services, difficulties, education programs, motivation, satisfaction and attitude of hospice volunteers and also to suggest supporting programs for the volunteer. For these purposes, a questionnaire was distributed among the 200 hospice volunteers in ten hospice organizations in Daejeon and Chungcheong province. In this research, 85.5% of the respondents were women and most of them were housewives in their forties and fifties. The majority of hospice volunteers had an education background of more than high school. Christianity (94%) was the dominant religion of volunteers. Among the service area of the hospice, emotional caring, such as listening closely and establishing empathy were the most frequently done by the respondents and the next one was spiritual care. Hospice volunteers who had started with altruistic motivation show more dynamic activities in emotional, spiritual, physical caring and so on, than those with non-altruistic motivation. Most of the respondents expressed that they felt a hospice volunteer was valuable. However they had a hard time to overcome the sorrow coming from sharing empathy with the dying patients. Those who had started with altruistic motivation usually took part in two times per a week and had more positive attitude. Volunteers who had been working more than five years showed better attitude than those who had been working less than three years. The longer the voluntary services, the more positive attitude experienced by volunteers. Hospice volunteers encountered the most considerable difficulty with lack of background knowledge and their actual capability. Insufficiency of time was the next reason for the considerable difficulty of the hospice volunteer. On the other hand, those who served more than twice per week replied that lack of background knowledge and their capability were the least considerable difficulty. Insufficiency of time was the reason of difficulty for male volunteers, as well as for females under thirty and those in their forties and fifties respectively. Generally most of the hospice volunteers (70%) were satisfied with their services and they usually satisfied with physical caring, spiritual caring, hospice's family caring. The less difficulty in voluntary services, more satisfaction for the volunteers in the end. There is a positive correlation between a attitude of the hospice volunteer and frequency of voluntary services while the volunteers' difficulty affect negatively their attitude as well as the frequency of voluntary services. Most of the hospice volunteers want to have more education about basic skills, volunteer's attitude and role, spirituality, the way of attending on the hospice and so on. Most of them considered discussion and sharing different cases as the most effective method. They also wish to had more supporting programs for the hospice volunteers(in the order of their needs) such as regular events, newsletters, personal concern, social meetings among the volunteers, insurance and minimum expenses. Based on the study results, more programs should be run in order to activate the voluntary services regardless of their gender and education background. A continuous practical supporting policy and education programs are required in order to provide special education and training courses considering every field of voluntary services. Expanding the role of the volunteers allows them more opportunities to take part in voluntary services and th activate participation. It is necessary to establish a new hospice system as a part public medical system, which can not only facilitate the voluntary services for a hospice but also enhance professional hospice volunteers. Finally, experts are needed to operate the voluntary services effectively.

  • The purpose of this study was analyzed the factors of influencing toward attitude to death with dignity to hospice volunteers. The data was collected for 21 days from 14 March to 3 April 2010. Among a total of 220 cases of the questionaries, only 195 cases were used. To data were analyzed by factor analysis, independent t-test, one-way anova and logistic regression using PASW statistics 18.0. The results were as follows; The attitudes towards death with dignity according to general characteristics was high in those with will to agreed to the passive euthanasia than those opposite to the attitude factors, namely, acceptive, the right to decide, negative, and dereliction of duty attitude factors. Significant variables for effects of death with dignity were gender, acceptive attitude factor and dereliction of duty attitude factors. Given that main provider of human organs is the brain-dead and we don't have enough organ donation, death with dignity should be linked with activating policy of organ donation, while solving donation shortage problem. This way, constructing social implementation and sharing consciousness on organ donation, would be diluting the bio-ethic controversies.

  • Purpose: The Taean oil spill in 2007 taught us a great lesson and is a representative example of a social disaster. It was overcome through the dazzling dedication and service of volunteers. However, behind the volunteers, they were directly or indirectly exposed to the spilled oil, resulting in health problems such as headaches and safety accidents. Safety accidents were caused by unsafe behavior, and unsafe behavior was caused by lack of safety awareness or ignorance. We want to find an education and training program to systematically raise safety awareness for volunteers in connection with the Occupational Safety and Health Act. Method: The occupational safety and health law, the laws related to coastal clean-up, and the unsafe behavior factors in the statistics of occupational accidents in the past year were mainly identified. Result: The contents of education and training hours to be provided for volunteers involved in coastal clean-up were presented in comparison with workers under the Occupational Safety and Health Act. Conclusion: Safety and health education for volunteers and volunteer managers is directly related to safety awareness and can prevent unsafe behavior.

  • Designing the User-Based Voluntary Service Recommendation Program proposed in this study was motivated by the fact that it is not easy for volunteers to find a place for their services. Even though there are many volunteer centers or organizations, volunteers often experience difficulty in where and how they should apply for their work as those places are not well promoted. Thus, this program has been designed by applying the mobile push services along with location technology. The authors plan to introduce the program to the public as an open source by implementing the program with both Android and Python - hoping that the program will be useful to the users and volunteer organizations.

Methods: A survey was conducted from December 12 to December 22, 2016. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to 150 cooking volunteers, who had participated in the community meal program in 50 villages. A total of 114 responses were returned from 44 villages and used for data analysis. In addition, in-depth interviews were conducted with the volunteers of eight villages. Results: Most of the cooking volunteers were 50 years old or older and they participated in serving older adults meals for good will. The cooking volunteers perceived that the older adults in their community did not eat various foods, had difficulties in grocery shopping, and frequently consumed salty foods. During the agricultural off-season, 40.9% of villages served the older adults meals 6-7 days a week and 95.5% provided meals for lunch. An average of 21 to 40 older adults were served meals in each village. The cooking volunteers reported that the food preparation and meal service times were sufficient, recipes provided were useful, and menus met the preference of the older adults. At the end of the program, they felt proud of serving meals for older adults in the community. An increased awareness of healthy eating, interest in health, and consumption of nutritious meals, a decrease in loneliness among older adults, and the promotion of fellowship in the community were rated highly. The cooking volunteers expected additional support for cooking personnel and insisted that the program should be provided for the entire agricultural off-seasons. Conclusions: The community meal program during the agricultural off-season for the elderly in rural areas was effective in improving the dietary life of older adults, relieving their feelings of isolation, and promoting fellowship of the community. • One of the current issues in Workers' Compensation Insurance is about the coverage range. Korea uses the definition of worker under the Labor Standards Act in Workers' Compensation Act and solved the problems associated with the coverage range of insurance group by the exceptional clause only for the groups which was raised about the need for the social protection. The purpose of this paper is to draw implications for solving problems which are associated with the coverage range of insurance group by reviewing the German literature. We focus on volunteers and persons in special types of employment. German government supports the activity of volunteers by providing with the protection service against the accidents. This paper shows how the coverage range is extended from the dependent employees in the introduction of the Workers' Compensation Insurance to the people who need social protection focusing on the volunteers. The implications of this research are following. First, German system shows that Workers' Compensation Insurance can be extended to the groups which do not belong to the dependent employee but are worthy of protection. Second, it is necessary to provide volunteers in the social welfare system with the protection service against the accidents and the statutory accident scheme is recommendable to use. Third, volunteers in the social welfare system need to be compulsory insured. Fourth, Korea should find their own way in solving problems associated with persons in special types of employment.
