This work focuses on the evaluation of active power filter which is controlled by fuzzy logic and neural network based controller for harmonic mitigation and power factor enhancement. The APF consists of a variable DC voltage source and a DC/AC inverter. The task of an APF is to make the line current waveform as close as possible to a sinusoid in phase with the line voltage by injecting the compensation current. The compensation current is estimated using adaptive neural network. Using the estimated current, the proposed APF is controlled using neural network and fuzzy logic. Computer simulations of the proposed APF are performed using MATLAB. The results show that the proposed techniques for the evaluation of APF can reduce the total harmonic distortion less than 3% and improve the power factor of the system to almost unity.
A five-level VSI(Voltage Source Inverter) is introduced as a SVC(Static Var Compensator) like a large scale power source. The problems in using SVC are that the power device can easily be destroyed by voltage unbalance and accurate reactive power control is difficult because of voltage variation. A asymmetrical PAM(Pulse Amplitude Modulation) switching pattern is proposed to solve this problem and analyze both fundamental component and harmonic current in the system. Through experimental results of 3.5 kVA experimental test system. It is confirmed that DC capacitor voltage can be controlled by asymmetrical PAM switching pattern control.

This paper deals with a novel solid state controller (NSSC) for an isolated asynchronous generator (IAG) feeding 3-phase 4-wire loads driven by constant power prime movers, such as uncontrolled pico hydro turbines. AC capacitor banks are used to meet the reactive power requirement of the asynchronous generator. The proposed NSSC is realized using a set of IGBTs (Insulated gate bipolar junction transistors) based current controlled 2-leg voltage source converters (CC- VSC) and a DC chopper at its DC bus, which keeps the generated voltage and frequency constant in spite of changes in consumer loads. The neutral point of the load is created using aT-configuration of the transformers. The IAG system is modeled in MATLAB along with Simulink and PSB (power system block set) toolboxes. The simulated results are presented to demonstrate the capability of the isolated generating system consisting of NSSC and IAG driven by uncontrolled pico hydro turbine and feeding 3-phase 4-wire loads.

In this paper, the implementation of a three-phase shunt active power filter is presented. The filter is essentially three independent single-phase current-controlled voltage source inverters (CC-VSI) with a common DC bus. The CC- VSI is operated to directly control the AC grid current to be sinusoidal and in phase with the grid voltage without detecting the load currents. The APF consists of a current control loop, which shapes the grid currents to be sinusoidal and a voltage control loop, which regulates the active power balance of the system. The experimental results indicate that the active filter is able to handle predominantly the harmonics, as well as the unbalance and reactive power, so that the grid currents are sinusoidal, in phase with the grid voltages and symmetrical.
A direct digital control technique of a current source using the phase-controlled rectifier is presented. A digital firing technique without sensing the line voltage is proposed. This scheme generates firing pulses directly from error signal between command and output voltage. Thus the phase detection transformers filters and zero-crossing detector are unnecessary. The synchronism is modeled and analized. Also a software synchronization algorithm is presented without a look up table and controls the system in real time with fast dynamic characteristics. Using the single-chip microprocessor 8097BH, the direct digital control is implemented with minimal hardware structure. Using the time-weighted performance index, the optimal discrete IPM control technique is also proposed to control the current of the PCR.
While most switching devices are based on PN junctions, a single layer can realize a switching device in the case of vanadium dioxide($VO_2$) thin films. In this paper, bidirectional current triggering(switching) is demonstrated in a two-terminal planar device based on a $VO_2$ thin film by illuminating the film with an infrared laser at 1550nm. To begin with, a two-terminal planar device, which had a $30{\mu}m$-wide $VO_2$ conducting layer and an electrode separation of $10{\mu}m$, was fabricated. A specific bias voltage range for stable bidirectional laser triggering was experimentally obtained by measuring the current-voltage characteristics of the fabricated device in a current-controlled mode. Then, by constructing a test circuit composed of the device, a standard resistor, and a DC voltage source, connected in series, the transient response of laser-triggered current and its response time were investigated with a DC bias voltage, included in the above specific bias voltage range, applied to the device. In the test circuit with a DC voltage source of 3.35V and a $10{\Omega}$ resistor, bidirectional laser triggering could be realized with a maximum on-state current of 15mA and a switching contrast of ~78.95.
The switching dead time avoiding a bridge leg short circuit in PWM voltage source inverter produces distortions of the controlling inverter output performance such as current waveform, voltage vector, and torque. In this paper, the influence of dead time is investigated. The on-line space voltage vector modulation method is used for current controller. It is possible to compensate dead time by space voltage vector modulation which generates additional pulse compensating voltage distortion caused by dead time. In addition, narrow pulse which is generally neglected can be compensated. All the algorithms, including field-oriented control are performed by one chip microprocessor 80C196MC and DSP TMS320C31. Experimental results probe that the proposed scheme provides a good inverter output performance.
Individual DC voltage balance problem is an inherent issue for cascaded H-bridge (CHB) based converter. When the CHB-based static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) is operating at zero current mode, the software-based individual DC voltage balancing control techniques may not work because of the infinitesimal output current. However, the different power losses of each cell would lead to the individual DC voltages unbalance. The uneven power losses on the local supplied cell-controllers (including the control circuit and drive circuit) would especially cause the divergence of individual DC voltages, due to their characteristic as constant power loads. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an adaptive voltage balancing module which is designed in the cell-controller board with small size and low cost circuits. It is controlled to make the power loss of the cell a constant resistance load, thus the DC voltages are balanced in zero current mode. Field test in a 10kV STATCOM confirms the performance of the proposed method.
We have performed the current and voltage loading tests of resistive superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLS) based on $YBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{7}$(YBCO) films with the diameter of 2 inch. The SFCL consists of meander-type YBCO stripes covered with 200 nm Au layer grown in situ for current shunt and heat dispersion at hot spots. The minimum quench current of an SFCL unit was about 25 Apeak. Seven SFCL units were connected in parallel fur the current load ing tests at power source of 100 $V_{rms}$$/2,000A_{rms}$. This SFCL units had maximum limiting current of 170 Apeak during the fault instant and then successfully controlled the fault current below 100 Apeak within 1~2 msec after short circuit. Increased short current also reduced the quench completion time with little change of current limiting characterization. We connected six SFCL units in series fur the voltage loading tests at power source of $1,200 V_{rms}$/170 $A_{rms}$ at this time. The shunt resistors were inserted into each SFCL unit to eliminate power imbalance originated from serial connection of SFCL units. Each SFCL unit was quenched simultaneously during the fault condition. The current increased up to 40 $A_{peak}$ and decreased to 14 $A_{peak}$ after 3 cycles. Quench was completed within 1 msec after the fault. We confirmed operating characteristics of 140 kVA($120 A_{rms}$$\times$ 1,200 $V_{rms}$) SFCL and presented the manufacturing possibility of 3.3 kV SFCL using 4 inch YBCO films.BCO films.lms.
