  • This paper presents a refined protection algorithm of the unfused 22.9kV shunt capacitor banks in grounded wye connection to improve the existing algorithm using the voltage difference method. It is difficult to detect ground faults with arc near the input points or ground faults near the grounding point by the existing algorithm using only the voltage balanced relay. This paper shows that ground faults with arc near the input point can be detected by harmonics analysis of the differential voltage and that it has no impact of harmonics out of nonlinear loads which have the quantitative influence on capacitor banks. Thus the proposed method using harmonics analysis can be a proper detection method. In case of ground faults near the grounding point, an OVGR is being added recently and its validity is verified in this paper. The proposed method is applied to a 22.9kV example system and is verified that the proposed algorithm can detect clearly faults which are not easy to detect by the existing method.

  • A simple and practical voltage balance method for a solid-state transformer (SST) is proposed to reduce the voltage difference of cascaded H-bridge converters. The tolerance device components in SST cause the imbalance problem of DC-link voltage in the H-bridge converter. The Max/Min algorithms of voltage balance controller are merged in the controller of an AC/DC rectifier to reduce the voltage difference. The DC-link voltage through each H-bridge converter can be balanced with the proposed control methods. The design and performance of the proposed SST are verified by experimental results using a 30 kW prototype.

  • The address discharge characteristics by the various scan-low and common-bias voltages are investigated based on measured address discharge time lags and $V_t$ close-curve analysis. The scan-low voltages are changed under the same voltage difference between the X and Y electrodes during an address period. As the voltage difference between the scan and address electrodes is increased during an address period, the address discharge time lag is shortened but the background luminance is increased. It is found that the improved address discharge characteristics is caused by the effect of the higher external applied voltage during an address period than the accumulated wall charges during a reset period and the high background luminance can be prevented by applying an address-bias voltage during a rising-ramp period and low reset voltage.

  • The series connection of power switching semiconductor elements is essential when a high voltage converter is made, so researches are being conducted to further develop this technology. In the series connection of power switching semiconductor elements, the main problem is that simultaneous conduction at turn-on and simultaneous blocking at turn-off together with voltage balancing are unattainable because of the difference of their switching characteristics. In this paper a novel series connection algorithm is proposed, which can implement not only the synchronization of the points of turn-on and turn-off time but the dynamic voltage balancing in spite of the difference of each switching characteristics. The proposed method is that the compensated control signal is attained from the voltage feedback signal and applied to the series-connected power transistors independently. Computer simulation and experimental results verify its validity.

  • The analysis of distribution line faults is essential to the proper protections of the power system. A high impedance fault test, which was carried in Korean electric power systems, it was found that a arcing phenomenon occurred during the high level portion of conductor voltage in each cycle. In this paper, we propose a new method for detection of high impedance faults, which uses the arcing fault current difference during high voltage and low voltage portion of conductor voltage waveform. To extract this difference, we diveded one cycle fault current into equal spanned four data windows according to the magnitude of voltage waveform and applied fast fourier transform(FFT) to each data window. The frequency spectrum of current wavefrom in each portion are used as the inputs of neural network and is trained to detect high impedance faults. The proposed method shows improved accuracy when applied to staged fault data and fault-like load.

  • Generally, a voltage difference or voltage distortion exists between the reference voltage and the practical voltage applied to a motor in a pulse width modulated(PWM) voltage source inverter(VSI). This voltage distortion varies with the operating conditions such as the temperature, DC link voltage, and phase current level. Also the voltage distortion affects the machine current distortion, torque pulsations, and control performance. In this paper, the voltage distortion in a PWM VSI is analyzed and a new on-line estimation method based on the model reference adaptive system(MRAS) is proposed to compensate the time varying voltage distortion, while considering the parameter variations for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The simulation and experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed voltage difference observer and the compensation method.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the cause analysis according to the difference between the pre exposure tube voltage and actual exposure tube voltage in mammography in connection with breast pressure thickness, breast size and body mass index and to find the improvement. The study tracked 377 women age 40 and older among the mammography examiners conducted by the National Health Insurance Corporation. It was analyzed that breast pressure thickness, breast size and body mass index according to the difference between the pre exposure tube voltage and actual exposure tube voltage among the parameters of dose report been sent to the picture archiving communication system with reference to the image with cranio-caudal projection in mammography. As are result, it shows that the thicker the breast thickness, smaller the breast size and lower body mass index, the higher the difference of tube voltage. In conclusion, the minimum tube voltage of mammography machine should be reset in order to set the tube voltage according to breast pressure thickness and breast size that are suitable for our country in mammography, in addition, it was considered that radiologist should make an effort to reduce radiation exposure and make a good quality image with reducing the difference of mammography condition by making a correct exposure condition in case of examining the patients with thin breast pressure and small breast size.

  • ln this paper, a micromachined micromechanical switch is presented. The presented switch is operated in the vertical direction to the substrate by an electrostatic force between two parallel plates. The moving plate is pulled down to connect the bumps of the bias node$(V_{DD}/ or GND)$ to the bumps of the output node when a oltage difference exists between the moving plate and the input plate. The switch was designed to operate at a low switching voltage$(\risingdotseq5V)$ by including a large-area, narrow-gap, parallel plate capacitor A theoretical analysis of the designed switch was performed in order to determine its geometry fitting the desired pull-in voltage and release voltage. The designed switch was fabricated by surface micromachining combined with Ni electroplating. From the experimental results of the fabricated switch, its pull-in voltage came Out to be less than 5V and the measured maximum allowable current was 150mA. The measured average ON-state resistance was about 8$\Omega$, and the OFF-state resistance was too high to be measured with digital multimeter.

  • The electromagnetic characteristics of FCEVs (fuel cell electric vehicles) are much different from the existing combustion engine cars as well as hybrid, plug-in-hybrid, and pure electric vehicles due to the high voltage/current generated by a fuel cell stack which uses a compressed hydrogen gas reacted with oxygen. To operate fuel cell stack efficiently, BOP (Balance of Plant) is essential. BOP systems are used many not only for motors in water pump, air blower, and hydrogen recycling pump but also inverters for these motors. Since these systems or components are connected by high voltage cables, EMC (Electromagnetic compatibility) analysis for high voltage/current cable is the most important element to prevent the possible electric functional safety errors. In this paper, electromagnetic fields of high current/voltage cable for FCEVs is studied. From numerical analysis results, time harmonic magnetic field strength of high current/voltage cable have difference of 20~28 dB according to phase. EMI result considered ground effect of FECV at 10 m shows difference of 14.5 dB at 30 MHz and 2.8 dB at 230 MHz compared with general cable.

  • In this paper, a new sag and peak voltage detector is proposed for a single-phase inverter using delta square operation. The conventional sag detector is from a single-phase digital phase-locked loop (DPLL) that is based on d-q transformations using an all-pass filter (APF). The d-q transformation is typically used in the three-phase coordinate system. The APF generates a virtual q-axis voltage component with a 90° phase delay, but this virtual phase cannot reflect a sudden change in the grid voltage at the instant the voltage sag occurs. As a result, the peak value is drastically distorted, and it settles down slowly. A modified APF generates the virtual q-axis voltage component from the difference between the current and the previous values of the d-axis voltage component in the stationary reference frame. However, the modified APF cannot detect the voltage sag and peak value when the sag occurs around the zero crossing points such as 0° and 180°, because the difference voltage is not sufficient to detect the voltage sag. The proposed algorithm detects the sag voltage through all regions including the zero crossing voltage. Moreover, the exact voltage drop can be acquired by calculating the q-axis component that is proportional to the d-axis component. To verify the feasibility of the proposed system, the conventional and proposed methods are compared using simulations and experimental results.
