The coupled finite/boundary element method is used in numerical analysis for acoustic radiation from the vibration of rectangular composite plate which is simply supported. This analysis is validated using the Wallace equation for an isotropic plate. Active control of sound fields has been tarried out using 3 pairs of piezoelectric sensor/actuator and a pair of viscoelastic material by Passive constrained layer damping treatment. The results show that the optimal placement of piezoelectric sensor/actuator and VE patch is required to control the sound fields from a vibrating composite plate.

In this study, the linear viscoelastic response of a rectangular laminated plate is investigated. The viscoelastic properties, expressed by two basic spring-dashpot models, that is Kelvin and Maxwell models, is assumed in the range to investigate the influence of viscoelastic coefficients to mechanical behavior. In the present study, viscoelastic responses are performed for two popular equivalent single-layered theories, such as the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and third-order shear deformation theory (TSDT). Compliance and relaxation modulus of time-dependent viscoelastic behavior are approximately determined by Prony series. The constitutive equation for linear viscoelastic material as the Boltzmann superposition integral equation is simplified by the convolution theorem of Laplace transformation to avoid direct time integration as well as to improve both accuracy and computational efficiency. The viscoelastic responses of composite laminates in the real time domain are obtained by applying the inverse Laplace transformation. The numerical results of viscoelastic phenomena such as creep, cyclic creep and recovery creep are presented.
For a number of years it has been known that flexural vibration in a beam and plate can be damped by the application of layer of damping (viscoelastic) material that is in turn constrained by a backing layer or foil. In this study, a quantitative analysis of damping of the sandwich beam has been performed by using impact test. The damping is characterized by the loss factor .etha. in which the damping is normalized by imaginary part of the complex bending stiffiness of the beam. Results show that the relative thickness of the sandwich beam gives more effect on the riatural-frequencies and loss factor than the variation of width does. It is also shown that the Ross-Kerwin-Ungar equation and impact test can be effectively used to identify the damping characteristic of the sandwich beam and viscoelastic material.

Optimal damping layout of the constrained viscoelastic damping layer on beam is identified with temperatures by using a gradient-based numerical search algorithm. An optimal design problem is defined in order to determine the constrained damping layer configuration. A finite element formulation is introduced to model the constrained damping layer beam. The four-parameter fractional derivative model and the Arrhenius shift factor are used to describe dynamic characteristics of viscoelastic material with respect to frequency and temperature. Frequency-dependent complex-valued eigenvalue problems are solved by using a simple resubstitution algorithm in order to obtain the loss factor of each mode and responses of the structure. The results of the numerical example show that the proposed method can reduce frequency responses of beam at peaks only by reconfiguring the layout of constrained damping layer within a limited weight constraint.
This paper concerns the analytical modeling and dynamic analysis of advanced cantilevered blade structure implemented by a dual approach based on structural tailoring and viscoelastic materials technology. Whereas structural tailoring uses the directionality properties of advanced composite materials, the passive materials technology exploits the damping capabilities of viscoelastic material(VEM) embedded into the host structure. The structure is modeled as a composite thin-walled beam incorporating a number of nonclassical features such as transverse shear, secondary warping, anisotropy of constituent materials, and rotary inertias. The case of VEM spreaded over the entire span of the structure is considered. The displayed numerical results provide a comprehensive picture of the synergisitic implications of the application of both techniques, namely, the tailoring and damping technology on vibration response of thin-walled beam structure exposed to external time-dependent excitations.

Length of an unconstrained viscoelastic damping layer on beams is determined to maximize loss factor using a numerical search method. The fractional derivative model can describe damping characteristics of the viscoelastic damping material, and is used to represent nonlinearity of complex modulus with frequencies and temperatures. Equivalent flexural rigidity of the unconstrained beam is obtained using Ross, Ungar, Kerwin(RUK) equation. The loss factors of partially covered unconstrained beam are calculated by a modal strain energy method. Optimal lengths of the unconstrained viscoelastic damping layer of beams are obtained with respect to ambient temperatures and thickness ratios of beam and damping layer.
In this paper, geometrically nonlinear free vibration analysis of Mindlin viscoelastic plates with various geometrical and material properties is studied based on the Von-Karman assumptions. A novel solution is proposed in which the nonlinear frequencies of time-dependent plates are predicted according to the nonlinear frequencies of plates not dependent on time. This method greatly reduces the cost of calculations. The viscoelastic properties obey the Boltzmann integral law with constant bulk modulus. The SHPC meshfree method is employed for spatial discretization. The Laplace transformation is used to convert equations from the time domain to the Laplace domain and vice versa. Solving the nonlinear complex eigenvalue problem in the Laplace-Carson domain numerically, the nonlinear frequencies, the nonlinear viscous damping frequencies, and the nonlinear damping ratios are verified and calculated for rectangular, skew, trapezoidal and circular plates with different boundary conditions and different material properties.

In this study, modeling methods for viscoelastic material are reviewed to investigate the vibration characteristics. Frequency response functions are obtained by employing experimental modal analysis and compared with the modeling results from a commercial software NASTRAN. Properties of equivalent model of the beam with damping material are also calculated by using the RKU equation.
Stress relaxation experiments were performed to obtain the material properties to be used in the linear viscoelastic study. Master curve of the modulus of polystyrene were obtained by using the time-temperature superposition principle. Because Shyu and Tobolsky's tensile relaxation modulus master curve or Polystyrene material showed very large difference, in-house data were required to calculate the residual stresses in injection-molded products more accurately. Our own experimental data showed that the master curve Shyu's data should be shifted about two orders in material time coordinate.

In this paper, a viscoelastic structural analysis for the spent pressurized water reactor(PWR) nuclear fuel disposal canister is carried out to predict the collapse of the canister while the canister is stored in a deep repository for long time. There may exist some subterranean heat in a deep repository while the nuclear fuel disposal canister is stored for long time. Then, a time-dependent viscoelastic structural deformation may occur in the canister due to the subterrnean heat Hence, the viscoelastic stress variation according to time should be computed to predict the structural strength of the canister. A viscoelastic material model is adopted. Analysis results show that even though some subterrnean heat may exist for quite a long time, the canister structure still endures stresses below the yield strength of the canister. Hence, some subterranean heat cannot seriously affect the structural strength of the canister.
