  • In this paper, we present a thin circular beam finite element for the out-of-plane vibration analysis of curved beams. The element stiffness matrix and the element mass matrix are derived respectively from the strain energy and the kinetic energy by using the natural shape functions which are obtained from an integration of the differential equations of the finite element in static equilibrium. The matrices are formulated with respect to the local polar coordinate system or to the global Cartesian coordinate system in consideration of the effects of shear deformation and rotary inertias. Some example problems are analysed. The FEM results are compared with the theoretical ones to show that the presented finite element can describe quite efficiently and accurately the out-of-plane motion of thin curved beams.

  • In this paper, the track pull-in behavior analyses in an optical disk drive (ODD) using plane phase is treated and the parameters affecting it are discussed. Track pull-in is the track capture procedure to do track following control and it is key factor to increase data transfer rate. Simulation method, Runge-Kutta method to solve nonlinear equation, is used to evaluate the track pull-in conditions, and the real servo loop parameters are applied in this process to get the more real condition. Finally, the comments for the acquired results are discussed briefly.

  • The potential hazards resulting from a low-velocity impact (bird-strike, tool drop, runway debris, etc.) on aircraft structures, such as engine nacelle or a leading edges, has been a long-term concern to the aircraft industry. Certification authorities require that exposed aircraft components must be tested to prove their capability to withstand low-velocity impact without suffering critical damage. In most of the past research studies unloaded specimens have been used for impact tests, however, in reality it is much more likely that a composite structure is exposed to a certain stress state when it is being impacted, which can have a significant effect on the impact performance. And the radiated impact sound induced by impact is analyzed for the damage detection evaluation. In this study, an investigation was undertaken to evaluate the effect in-plane loading on the impact force and sound of composite laminates numerically.

  • In-plane vibrations of slightly curved beams having cracks are investigated numerically and experimentally. The curvature of the beam is circular and stays in the plane of vibration. Specimens made of steel with different lengths but with the same radius of curvature are used in the experiments. Cracks are opened using a hand saw having 0.4 mm thickness. Natural frequencies depending on location and depth of the cracks are determined using a Bruel & Kjaer 4366 type accelerometer. Then the beam is assumed as a Rayleigh type slightly curved beam in finite element method (FEM) including bending, extension and rotary inertia. A flexural rigidity equation given in literature for straight beams having a crack is used in the analysis. Frequencies are obtained numerically for different crack locations and depths. Experimental results are presented and compared with the numerical solutions. The natural frequencies are affected too much due to larger moments when the crack is around nodes. The effect can be neglected when it is at the location of maximum displacements. When the crack is close to the clamped end, the decrease in the frequencies in all modes is very high. The consistency of the results and validity of the equations are discussed.

  • Measurement or estimation of tilt angle is necessary for balancing robot such as Segway which is considered as a next generation transportation vehicle. However, it requires high-cost accurate sensors to hold balancing during stationary and moving situations. In this paper, a tilt angle estimation of a plane rotating in a vertical plane using low-cost sensors. Estimation using a set of 2-axis orthogonal accelerometers along with an inaccurate rate gyro has been considered. Feasibility and performance of the proposed technique has been verified through some experimental results.

  • In this paper, we present the equations of motion by which the natural vibration of a rotating annular disk can be accurately analyzed. These equations are derived from the theory of finite deformation and the principle of virtual work. The radial displacements of annular disk which is rotating at constant angular velocity are determined by non-linear equations formulated using 1-dimensional finite elements in radial direction. The equations of the in-plane vibrations at disturbed state are also formulated using 1-dimensional finite elements in radial direction along the number of nodal diameters. They are expressed as in functions of the radial displacements at the steady state and the disturbed displacements about the steady state. In-plane static deformation modes of the annular disk are used as the interpolation functions of 1-dimensional finite elements in radial direction. The natural vibrations of an annular disk with different boundary conditions are analyzed by using the presented model and the 3-dimensional finite element model to verify accuracy of the presented equations of motion. Its results are compared and discussed.

  • The center of percussion(COP) is the point of an extended massive object attached to a pivot where a perpendicular impact will produce no reactive shock at the pivot. COP is an important concept in the field of vibration and dynamics. In vibration, COP causes reduction of vibration and in dynamics, it brings about maximum speed of an object. Many studies about COP are still in progress. However most of the researches have typically focused on the method of mathematical and numerical anlalysis. In this paper, impact analysis was proved by the mechanical energy method using EDISON co-rotational plane beam transient analysis program. The result expressed in acceleration was the relative magnitude of the impulse, which was the indicator of COP. Then, these results were compared with the reference thesis results for exact consequences. Additionally, parametric study of COP was conducted.

  • The differential quadrature method(DQM) is applied to computation of eigenvalues of the equations of motion governing the free out-of-plane vibration for circular curved beams including the effects of rotatory inertia and transverse shearing deformation. Fundamental frequencies are calculated for the members with clamped-clamped end conditions and various opening angles. The results are compared with exact solutions or numerical solutions by other methods for cases in which they are available. The DQM provides good accuracy even when only a limited number of grid points is used.

  • One of the efficient procedures for the solution of partial differential equations is the method of differential quadrature. This method has been applied to a large number of cases to circumvent the difficulties of the complex algorithms of programming for the computer, as well as excessive use of storage due to conditions of complex geometry and loading. In-plane vibrations of curved beams with inextensibility and extensibility of the arch axis are analyzed by the differential quadrature method (DQM). Fundamental frequencies are calculated for the member with various end conditions and opening angles. The results are compared with exact experimental and numerical results by other methods for cases in which they are available. The DQM gives good accuracy even when only a limited number of grid points is used, and new results according to diverse variation are also suggested.
