We have previously isolated three synthetic lethal mutants from Schizosaccharomyces pombe in order to identify mutations in the genes that are functionally linked to spmex67 with respect to mRNA export. A novel rsm1 gene was isolated by complementation of the growth defect in one of the synthetic lethal mutants, SLMex1. The rsml gene contains no introns and encodes a 296 amino-add-long protein with the RING finger domain, a C3HC4 in the N-terminal half. The Δrsm1 null mutant is viable, but it showed a slight poly(A)$\^$+/ RNA accumulation in the nucleus. Also, the combination of Δrsm1 and Δspmex67 mutations confers synthetic lethality that is accompanied by the severe poly(A)$\^$+/ RNA export defect. These results suggest that rsm1 is involved in mRNA export from the nucleus.
Conditional lethal mutation nup49-1 of a nuclear pore complex component gene was constructed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This mutation deleted one third of the essential NUP49 gene at the carboxy-terminal, but retained 13 repeats of the highly conserved GLFG domain. The nup49-1 mutant strain was viable with a slow-growth phenotype, indicating that the C-terminal is dispensable at normal growth temperature. This strain exhibited both temperature-sensitivity at 37.deg.C and cold-sensitivity at 16.deg.C. Temperature shift experiments revealed that the arrest phenotype at 37.deg.C was random in the cell division cycle. The nup49-1 mutation was tested to be recessive and is expected to be useful for the functional analysis of nuclear pore complex proteins as well as for studies of nuclear transport systems.

The shock-induced combustion ramjet (shcramjet) is a hypersonic airbreathing propulsion concept which over-comes the drawbacks of the long, massive combustors present in the scramjet by using a standing oblique detonation wave (a coupled shock-combustion front) as a means of nearly instantaneous heat addition. A novel shcramjet combustor design that makes use of wedge-shaped flameholders to avoid detonation wave-wall interactions is proposed and analyzed with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations in this study. The laminar, two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations coupled with a non-equilibrium hydrogen-air combustion model based on chemical kinetics are used to represent the physical system. The equations are solved with the WARP (window-allocatable resolver for propulsion) CFD code (see: Parent, B. and Sislian, J. P., “The Use of Domain Decomposition in Accelerating the Convergence of Quasihyperbolic Systems”, J. of Comp. Physics, Vol. 179, No. 1,2002, pages 140-169). The solver was validated with experimental results found in the literature. A series of steady-state numerical simulations was conducted using WARP and it was deter-mined by means of thrust potential calculations that this combustor design is a viable one for shcramjet propulsion: assuming a shcramjet flight Mach number of twelve at an altitude of 36,000 m, the geometrical dimensions used for the combustor give rise to an operational range for combustor inlet Mach numbers between six and eight. Different shcramjet flight Mach numbers would require different combustor dimensions and hence a variable geometry system in or-der to be viable.
Experimental study on unsaturated flow in the soil is important to understand the characteristics of the water flow. Measurement of unsteady-state water movement using the traditional equipment (e.g. tensiometer) has a problem that requires relatively a long response time. In this study a quick measurement method of soil water flow using TDR is introduced. TDR consists of an electronic function generator which generates a squared wave, and an oscilloscope which catches the reflected wave. The wave is reflected where both the impedance of the transmission line and the propagation velocity are changed. The water content can be obtained from the travel time measured by means of TDR because the dielectric constant is affected by the change of soil water content. From the result of TDR calibration. TDR measurement error for the oven dried soil was found to be less than 3.5%. This supports that TDR is a viable technique to measure the unsteady-state water movement.
As organizations search fur more secure authentication methods (Dr user access, e-commerce, and other security applications, biometrics is gaining increasing attention. Biometrics offers greater security and convenience than traditional methods of personal recognition. In some applications, biometrics can replace or supplement the existing technology. In others, it is the only viable approach. Several biometric methods of identification, including fingerprint hand geometry, facial, ear, iris, eye, signature and handwriting have been explored and compared in this paper. They all are well suited for the specific application to their domain. This paper briefly identifies and categorizes them in particular domain well suited for their application. Some methods are less intrusive than others.
Recently, digital watermarking has been proposed as a viable solution to the need of copyright protection and authentication of multimedia data. A robust wavelet-based watermark casting scheme and a watermark retrieval technique are suggested in this paper. We present a method which can add the watermark to the significant coefficients in the DWT domain, and does not require the original image in the detection process. In adaptive watermark casting method is developed to select perceptually significant coefficients for each subband using multiple threshold. In the proposed method, an adaptive multiple threshold scheme is used to reflect characteristics of each subband and complexity of image. The watermark is adaptively weighted in different subbands to achieve robustness as well as high perceptual quality. The watermark, Gaussian random sequence is added to the large coefficients but not in the lowest subband in the DWT domain. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm produced visually very good watermarked image which has good invisibility to human eyes and very robust against various image processing and compression attacks.

This work continues a trend of developments aimed at exploiting the physical layer of the open systems interconnection (OSI) model to enhance wireless network security. The goal is to augment activity occurring across other OSI layers and provide improved safeguards against unauthorized access. Relative to intrusion detection and anti-spoofing, this paper provides details for a proof-of-concept investigation involving "air monitor" applications where physical equipment constraints are not overly restrictive. In this case, RF fingerprinting is emerging as a viable security measure for providing device-specific identification (manufacturer, model, and/or serial number). RF fingerprint features can be extracted from various regions of collected bursts, the detection of which has been extensively researched. Given reliable burst detection, the near-term challenge is to find robust fingerprint features to improve device distinguishability. This is addressed here using wavelet domain (WD) RF fingerprinting based on dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DT-$\mathbb{C}WT$) features extracted from the non-transient preamble response of OFDM-based 802.11a signals. Intra-manufacturer classification performance is evaluated using four like-model Cisco devices with dissimilar serial numbers. WD fingerprinting effectiveness is demonstrated using Fisher-based multiple discriminant analysis (MDA) with maximum likelihood (ML) classification. The effects of varying channel SNR, burst detection error and dissimilar SNRs for MDA/ML training and classification are considered. Relative to time domain (TD) RF fingerprinting, WD fingerprinting with DT-$\mathbb{C}WT$ features emerged as the superior alternative for all scenarios at SNRs below 20 dB while achieving performance gains of up to 8 dB at 80% classification accuracy.
Monitoring solute transport has been known to be difficult especially for the unsaturated soil. The object of this study is to investigate the TDR application to monitoring solute concentration in the vadose zone. The TDR calibration test was conducted for soil samples with various water contents and concentrations. The voltage attenuation of electromagnetic wave of TDR was used to estimate the bulk electrical conductivity of a soil. The relationship between the bulk soil electrical conductivity and the solute concentration was assumed to be linear at a constant volumetric soil water content. In this study four proposed relationships were compared using data obtained from KCI solution at three different concentrations. Relationships given by Topp, Daltaon, Yanuka showed the linearity between the bulk soil electrical conductivity and the solute concentration, which were more pronounced than Zegelin's. The three relationships were found to be useful to measure the solute concentration in the vadose zone. In addition, TDR method was proven to be a viable technique in monitoring solute transport through unsaturated soils in transient flow condition.
In general, curriculum is a product of the process of a political decision-making among a variety of peoples who have different perspectives on learners, knowledge, and society as a whole. And also, it is being affected by larger social and political contexts. As curriculum has become more a centerpiece of program activity for the gifted, the field has more emphasized the importance of viable curriculum models. The purpose of this article is to reflect current status of curriculum development for the gifted, explain the commonness and differences of several perspectives on gifted education programs, and lastly, share some experiences to deliberate about several critical issues of which any activity of program development for the gifted should consider. According to Eisner & Valiance (1974), there are five conceptions of curriculum which have shaped the thinking of many educators of what a view of curriculum for the gifted might be ; curriculum as the development of cognitive process, curriculum as technology, curriculum as personal relevance, curriculum as social construction, curriculum as academic rationalism. Although educators have a freedom to choose among these various curriculum orientations, the most effective curricular incorporate or balance all of them to some extent. After reviewing those perspectives on curriculum and several difficulties which are currently confronted at the site of curriculum development, this article have tried to identify the major curriculum efforts of the gifted education field. It focuses on the issues of developing programs for gifted and talented students, rather than on specific program models. As a result, it suggested seven critical issues or value conflicts which should be considered in the process of program development for the gifted: the balance of domain-general abilities of the gifted and domain-specific abilities, mutual consideration of accelerated learning and enrichment learning, separate organization of contents versus integrated organization, the balance of cognitive domain of human development and affective domain, official curriculum versus non-official education experience, individual-oriented learning situation versus group-oriented teaming, and expert-centered approach versus practitioner-centered approach to curriculum development.

Neural network can be trained to approximate an arbitrary nonlinear function of multivariate data like the mini-mill crown values in Automatic Shape Control. The trained weights of neural network can evaluate or generalize the process data outside the training vectors. Sometimes, the blind modeling of the process data is necessary to compare with the scattered analytical model of mini-mill process in isolated electro-mechanical forms. To come up with a viable model, we propose the blind neural-based range-division domain-clustering piecewise-linear modeling scheme. The basic ideas are: 1) dividing the range of target data, 2) clustering the corresponding input space vectors, 3)training the neural network with clustered prototypes to smooth out the convergence and 4) solving the resulting matrix equations with a pseudo-inverse to alleviate the ill-conditioning problem. The simulation results support the effectiveness of the proposed scheme and it opens a new way to the data analysis technique. By the comparison with the statistical regression, it is evident that the proposed scheme obtains better modeling error uniformity and reduces the magnitudes of errors considerably. Approximatly 10-fold better performance results.
