The purpose of this study was to analyze and extract the features of verbal interactions between teacher and science-gifted students in their classes. For the purpose of this study, authors observed 27 elementary science classes for the science gifted of three elementary teachers. To analyze the verbal interactions in the classes, the authors have adopted the theoretical background, which was based on Sinclair & Coulthard's Initiative-Response-Feedback pattern. Verbal interactions in the classes were analyzed by Kim's framework, which modified Jeong's framework. IRF patterns were derived from the verbal interactions of science classes for the science gifted. As a result, authors obtained some important features in IRF pattern. The most commonly used IRF pattern was the teacher's managerial question-student's short answer pattern, which was due to the regional policy for the science gifted. The teacher's delayed feedback as well as the teacher's question was meaningful for student's thinking ability. If elementary teachers consider the pattern, the strategy should be applied, which is depending on student levels and levels of contents. But three teachers did not show the characteristic verbal interaction regarded as a pattern strategy. In the future, inservice programs about verbal interaction are needed for the science gifted classes.

The purpose of this study is to analyze verbal interaction between teachers and students in order to collect qualitative data on the characteristics of the interaction to enhance teaching efficacy. Total of 12 classes of eight science teachers were observed and were interviewed. The classes were video taped and all the verbal interactions were transcribed. The transcribed content and interviews were further analyzed to draw any conclusions on the verbal interaction between teachers and students. Analysis criteria for the data on the class and interview were developed based on the literature review and applied to analyze the collected content. The analyzed data showed that verbal interactions composed of confirmation questions for memorization, students' short responses and teacher's immediate feedbacks. The results of the study also suggested that there needs to be further studies on the interactional techniques for teacher in utilizing the class materials and activities. The teachers should acknowledge the importance of the questions and feedbacks of teachers for students to stimulate their sound learning through literatures.

In this study, we analyzed verbal interactions among 32 students in 7th graders' science cooperative learning at the levels of turns, interaction units, and conflict behavior units, and compared their verbal interaction patterns between the heterogeneous and homogeneous groups by students' collectivism. The relationships of verbal interactions with the achievement test scores and the increase of the achievement test scores were also investigated. In the analyses of turns, the distributions of the subcategories of the statements related to the task were found to be similar in both groups, and the frequency of 'explain' was highest. The frequencies of interaction units were higher in the homogeneous groups than the heterogeneous groups, and the frequency of 'symmetric interaction' was highest. In the heterogeneous groups, the frequencies of turns and interaction units for the students of high collectivism were higher than those of low collectivism. The frequencies of conflict behavior units were generally low, but the rates were similar in both groups. In the case of the homogeneous groups, the frequencies of 'avoiding' and 'competing' for the students of low collectivism were high, and the frequency of 'cooperating' for the students of high collectivism was high. In addition, the qualitative differences between the two groups were found in the interaction units and conflict behavior units. The achievement test scores and the increase of the achievement test scores were positively related with the sum of the frequencies of the statements related to the task.
This study investigated relationships among infant development, teacher's sensitivity, home literacy environment, and infant-teacher interaction in the child care setting. Verbal and behavioral interactions between 30 2-year-old infant-teacher pairs were video-recorded during free play activities; teachers' sensitivity was observed by trained observers; infant development was assessed by teachers; data on the early home literacy environment were gathered through maternal self-reported questionnaires. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-tests, and correlation analyses. Results indicated that boys showed more naming; girls showed more physical contact with teachers. Infants high in overall developmental level showed more behavioral interaction with teachers. Teacher's sensitivity correlated positively with behavioral imitating and negatively with questioning and nodding. Verbal interaction in the home correlated positively with nodding.
The active participation and active interaction of learners in small group science inquiry activities are the main factors that determine the effectiveness of science learning. Roles can be assigned to members of a small group to facilitate interaction between members within the small group. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of role assignment on the types and patterns of verbal interactions in middle school students' small group science inquiry activities. For this, 172 students from middle schools located in metropolitan cities were surveyed. We analyzed 18 small groups with assigned roles and 15 small groups without assigned roles. The change in verbal interaction type in small group science inquiry activity according to role assignment was largely divided into alienation and participation. In the case of small groups with assigned roles, the participation type occupied a higher proportion than the alienation type. The change in verbal interaction patterns did not show much significant differences when the role was assigned in terms of cognitive and affective. Based on this, further research is needed on how role assignment affects verbal interactions depending on the type of scientific inquiry and the stage of inquiry. In addition, further research on the composition of small groups and role assignment is required.
This study was to analyze verbal interactions between teachers and students after observations on teachers' questioning and feedback, students' response types and frequency analysis at middle-school class of average and gifted students. As for the verbal interaction between teachers and students of science class of general students, it was dominant for teachers to utilize questions for summarizing or guiding for textbook contents as they are. They were focused on immediate feedback in a restatement form. The students used simple responses like yes/no in general. The most high frequency of verbal interaction models expressed were in the order of cognitive-memory thinking question-short answer-immediate feedback. On the other hand, teachers of gifted students' science class threw divergent and evaluative thinking questions of open question, such as 'what's the reason?' or 'why is it?' Immediate feedback in explanatory form was mainly provided as well. The level of feedback delay was higher than general class and that of immediate feedback was lower than general class. The students preferred short words or a not-complicated sentence when they replied and their participation was more attentive and positive. Hence, The high frequency of verbal interaction models expressed were in order of cognitive-memory thinking questions-elaborative short answer-delayed feedback.
Objective: The purpose of the present study was to explore the moderating role of children's verbal ability in the relation between shyness and teacher-child relationships. Methods: Participants were 200 children, their mothers, and their kindergarten teachers. Children's shyness was rated by their mothers and teachers, and children's verbal ability was measured using the language problem solving ability test. And teachers completed a rating scale in order to examine the teacher-child relationship. The collected data were analyzed using correlations and hierarchical multiple regressions. Results: Children's shyness had a negative relation to close teacher-child relationships. And child's verbal ability was significantly related to teacher-child relationships. Hierachical regression analysis indicted to the interaction of child's shyness and verbal ability predicted close teacher-child relationships. Children's shyness, those who demonstrated the lowest level of child's verbal ability, was significantly associated with close teacher-child relationships. Children's shyness had no significant relation to close teacher-child relationships, especially for the highest level of children's verbal ability. Conclusion/Implications: We suggested that verbal ability training for children might be valuable for shy children in order to buffer the link between shyness and teacher-child relationships.

This study investigated students' verbal behaviors in paired think-aloud problem solving. High school students in chemistry classes were asked to use 4 stage problem-solving strategy through paired think-aloud problem solving, and their small-group behaviors were audio/video taped. Verbal behaviors of the solvers and listeners were classified into 8 categories. Solvers frequently exhibited the behaviors of 'require agreement', 'provide', and 'modify', and listeners frequently exhibited the behaviors of 'agree', 'ask', and 'point out'. With behaviors exhibited frequently, the verbal interaction between solvers and listeners were also investigated. In studying partial correlation between verbal behaviors and the improvement of problem-solving ability, listener's 'agree' and 'point out', and solver's 'modify' were positively related with listener's improvement. However, there was negative correlation between listener's 'point out' and solver's improvement. In a perception questionnaire, many students were found to perceive that the paired think-aloud problem solving helped them to be aware of the problem-solving processes. However, some listeners also perceived that it was difficult to know solver's problem-solving processes.
The purpose of this study was to analyze toddlers' verbal and nonverbal interaction with their peers and caregivers according to the class size of child care centers in Seoul. The subjects of this study were 20, two-year-old(M=32.5 month) toddlers with peers and caregivers from child care centers in different class sizes, but with same caregiver-toddler ratio. Verbal and nonverbal interactions were videotaped during one hour indoor free play per child in the center. According to the class size, the results were as follows : 1) Toddlers in the small class played more cooperatively with peers, and uttered more regulative or directive words than those in the large class. 2) Toddlers in the large class were more aggressive than those in the small class. 3) Caregivers in small class expressed more empathetic behaviors to a toddler than those in large class.
Purpose: The concept of embarrassment as an unpleasant emotion is important in caring for those who are in the continuum of illness and health requiring body care and facing sexual problems. In spite of its nursing implication, embarrassment has not been focused in nursing research. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to develope a conceptual analysis of embarrassment. This analysis would help to understand comprehensively an embarrassing situation in which an intimate relationship between nurse and patient regarding body care of the patient could develope. Futhermore, it would be a basis for developing strategies for prevention of embarrassment which could lead for both patient and nurse to emotionally vulnerable situation because of their failure of self-presentation (impression management). Method: The concept analysis model suggested by Walker and Avant (1988) is used to clarify what is meant by the term 'embarrassment'. Result: This analysis defines the attributes of embarrassment such as follows. First, embarrassment is often attributed to situational factors interrupting a smooth interaction such as intimacy, confusion, vulnerability, exposure of interaction and characteristics of audience. Second, embarrassment is closely related with cognitive factor such as fear of losing face resulted from a behaviour being out of line. Third, embarrassment is closely associated with dispositional factor such as embarrassability. Fourth, embarrassment is an unpleasant and unwanted emotion arising reactively after an interaction had occurred. Fifth, embarrassment encloses physical, physiological and behavioral aspects such as a variety of unique and easily noticeable reactions and a pattern of verbal and non-verbal behaviour for coping in an embarrassing situation. The antecedents were normally socialized adolescents with normal cognitive ability, concern of losing face, embarrassability, embarrassing events related with situational intimacy, confusion, vulnerability, exposure of interaction and characteristics of audience, physical, behavioral blunders resulting in a failure of impression management. The consequences were an emotional coping behaviour, audience's embarrassment responses, and verbal and non-verbal coping strategies of interactional participants. Conclusion: It is hoped that this analysis will stimulate further exploration of this concept and study for developing systematic assessment and nursing practice that diminishes embarrassment of interactional participants.
