This paper proposes an autopilot system using a fuzzy PID controller to satisfy performances required for the automatic navigation of ships under various marine circumstances. The existing autopilot system using a PD type controller has difficulties in eliminating a steady-state error and compensating nonlinear characteristics of ships. The autopilot system using the proposed fuzzy PID controller has a self-tuning ability, an ability to compensate nonlinear characteristics, and an ability to turn at constant angular velocity. Therefore. it can naturally make a steady-state error zero, compensate nonlinear dynamic effect of ships, have an adaptability to parameter variation owing to shallow water effect, and have an ability to turn ship's course rapidly without overshoot through procedures of acceleration, constant, and deceleration of angular velocity for large course-changing.
This paper presents a self tuning method of a velocity type PID controller for minimum or non-minimum phase systems with time delays. The velocity type PID control structure is determined in the process of minimizing the variance of the auxilliary output, and self tuning effect is achieved through the recursive least square algorithm at the parameter estimation stage and also through the Robbins-Monro algorithm at the stage of optimizing a design parameter. This method is simple and effective compared with other existing methods[1,2]. Numerical examples are included to illustrate the procedure and to show the performance of the control system.

This paper proposes a new controller design method for a fork-type lifter (FTL) of a transportation mobile robot. The transportation robot needs to pick up a package from a stack on a storage shelf and move on by a planned path in a logistics center environment. The position of the storage shelf is recognized by reading a QR code on the floor, and using this position, the robot can move to reach the storage shelf and pick up the package. PID controllers and an adaptive controller are designed to control the velocity of two wheels and the position of the FTL. An adaptive controller for the lifter is designed to elevate up and down on a slideway to the correct height position of the package on the stack of the storage shelf. The simulation results show that the PID controllers can respond smoothly to the desired angular velocity and the adaptive controller can adapt quickly and correctly to the desired height.
This paper presents an automatic tuning method for parameters of a multivaiable self-tuning velocity-type PID controller which adapts to changes in the system parameters with time delays and noises. The velocity-type PID control structure is determined in the process of minimizing the variance of the auxiliarly output, and self-tuning effect is achieved through the recursive least square algorithm at the parameter estimation stage and also through the Robbins-Monro algorithm at the stage of optiminzing the design parameters of the controller. The proposed PID type multivariable self-tuning method is simple andeffective compared with other esisting multivariable self-tuning methods. Computer simulation has shown that the proposed algorithm is beter than the trial-and-error method in the tracking performance.
Although Fuzzy Logic Controller(FLC) adopted three terms as input gives better performance, FLC is in general composed of two-term control because of the difficulty in the construction of fuzzy rule base. In this paper, a three-term FLC which is similar to PID control but acts as a nonlinear controller is proposed. To reduce the complexity of the rule base design and to increase efficiency. a simplified fuzzy PID control is induced from a hybrid velocity/position type PID algorithm by sharing a common rule base for both fuzzy PI and fuzzy PD parts. It is simple in structure, easy in implementation, and fast in calculation. The phase plane technique is applied to obtain the rule base for fuzzy two-term control and the resultant rule base is Macvicar-Whelan type. And the membership function is a Gaussian function. The frequency response information is used in tuning of the membership functions. Also a tuning strategy for the scaling factors is proposed based on the relationship between PID gain and the scaling factors. Simulation results show better performance and the effectiveness of the proposed method.
In this paper, different feedback control strategies are presented for active seismic control using proportional-integral-derivative (PID) type controllers. The parameters of PID controller are found by using an numerical algorithm considering time delay, maximum allowed control force and time domain analyses of shear buildings under different earthquake excitations. The numerical algorithm scans combinations of different controller parameters such as proportional gain ($K_p$), integral time ($T_i$) and derivative time ($T_d$) in order to minimize a defined response of the structure. The controllers for displacement, velocity and acceleration feedback control strategies are tuned for structures with active control at the first story and all stories. The performance and robustness of different feedback controls on time and frequency responses of structures are evaluated. All feedback controls are generally robust for the changing properties of the structure, but acceleration feedback control is the best one for efficiency and stability of control system.
This paper proposes a mobile robot platform for education that can experiment with various autonomous driving algorithms such as obstacle avoidance and path planning. The platform consists of a robot module and a remote controller module, both of which are based on the Arduino Nano 33 IoT embedded board. The robot module is designed as a differential drive type using two encoder motors, and the speed of the motor is controlled using PID control. In the case of the remote controller module, a command to control the robot platform is received with a 2-axis joystick input, and an elliptical grid mapping technique is used to convert the joystick input into a linear and angular velocity command of the robot. WiFi and Zigbee are used for communication between the robot module and the remote controller module. The proposed robot platform was tested by measuring and comparing the linear velocity and angular velocity of the actual robot according to the linear velocity and angular velocity commands of the robot generated by the input of the joystick.

Path following of the mobile robot is one research hot for the mobile robot navigation. For the control system of the wheeled mobile robot(WMR) being in nonhonolomic system and the complex relations among the control parameters, it is difficult to solve the problem based on traditional mathematics model. In this paper, we presents a simple and effective way of implementing an adaptive following controller based on the PID for mobile robot path following. The method uses a non-linear model of mobile robot kinematics and thus allows an accurate prediction of the future trajectories. The proposed controller has a parallel structure that consists of PID controller with a fixed gain. The control law is constructed on the basis of Lyapunov stability theory. Computer simulation for a differentially driven nonholonomic mobile robot is carried out in the velocity and orientation tracking control of the nonholonomic WMR. The simulation results of wheel type mobile robot platform are given to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
