  • The dynamic responses of human standing postural control were investigated when subjects were exposed to long-term horizontal vibration. It was hypothesized that the motion of standing posture complexity mainly occurs in the mid-sagittal plane. The motor-driven support platform was designed as a source of vibration. The AC Servo-controlled motors produced anterior/posterior (AP) motion. The platform acceleration and the trunk angular velocity were used as the input and the output of the system, respectively. A method was proposed to identify the complexity of the standing posture dynamics. That is, during AP platform motion, the subject's knee, hip and neck were tightly constrained by fixing assembly, so the lower extremity, trunk and head of the subject's body were individually immovable. Through this method, it was assumed that the ankle joint rotation mainly contributed to maintaining their body balance. Four subjects took part in this study. During the experiment, the random vibration was generated at a magnitude of $0.44m/s^2$, and the duration of each trial was 40 seconds. Measured data were estimated by the coherence function and the frequency response function for analyzing the dynamic behavior of standing control over a frequency range from 0.2 to 3 Hz. Significant coherence values were found above 0.5 Hz. The estimation of frequency response function revealed the dominant resonance frequencies between 0.60 Hz and 0.68 Hz. On the basis of our results illustrated here, the linear model of standing postural control was further concluded.

  • The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute plans to develop a coronagraph in collaboration with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and to install it on the International Space Station (ISS). The coronagraph is an externally occulted one-stage coronagraph with a field of view from 3 to 15 solar radii. The observation wavelength is approximately 400 nm, where strong Fraunhofer absorption lines from the photosphere experience thermal broadening and Doppler shift through scattering by coronal electrons. Photometric filter observations around this band enable the estimation of 2D electron temperature and electron velocity distribution in the corona. Together with a high time cadence (<12 min) of corona images used to determine the geometric and kinematic parameters of coronal mass ejections, the coronagraph will yield the spatial distribution of electron density by measuring the polarized brightness. For the purpose of technical demonstration, we intend to observe the total solar eclipse in August 2017 with the filter system and to perform a stratospheric balloon experiment in 2019 with the engineering model of the coronagraph. The coronagraph is planned to be installed on the ISS in 2021 for addressing a number of questions (e.g., coronal heating and solar wind acceleration) that are both fundamental and practically important in the physics of the solar corona and of the heliosphere.

  • Efforts to understand and develop reasonable analysis methods for the uncertainty of ground have been made since the 20th century, and the concept of safety factor has been used. However, this concept has limitation in measuring the relative reliability of ground structures because the representative values of the actually used factors have uncertainty. Nevertheless, there is no method to completely remove uncertainty. In most cases, the ground investigation results in Korea are not enough for applying such statistical methods. Furthermore, performing a design without accurate investigation of consolidation state even though consolidation characteristics such as settlement and consolidation velocity vary greatly by the consolidation history can lead to many problems. Therefore, in this paper, as part of the effort to reduce the uncertainty of design around over consolidation ratio among the consolidation factors, the consolidation state was assessed on the basis of the results of high-quality laboratory tests that were performed in Gwangyang and Busan in the southern coast of Korea. Furthermore, consolidation characteristics such as over consolidation ratio by depth were proposed for different regions through statistical processes such as the test of normality and the removal of abnormal values to reduce the uncertainty of design parameters.

  • To investigate the engineering properties of basalt in Cheju Island, rock samples of Pyosenri basalt, trachy-basalt and scoria were taken from Seoguipo-Si Seongsan-Eup area. The laboratory tests such as absorption test, specific gravity test, permeability test, Schmidt hammer test, elastic wave test and uniaxial compressive testwere carried out for the collected rock samples. The absorption, the specific gravity, the permeability, the elastic wave velocity and uniaxial compressive strengthwere investigated and analyzed as the results of these tests. As the result of regression analysis for the relationship between the rebound values from Schmidt hammer test and the uniaxial compressive strengths from uniaxial compressive test, especially, estimation equations were proposed using the rebound values from Schmidt hammer test. Therefore, the simple method to estimate the uniaxial compressive strength was provided.

  • The gas turbine static starter rotates the stationary synchronous machine by the interaction of the rotor and the stator. The detection from the initial position of the rotor has been an important issue to drive with optimum torque. Previously, the gas turbine starter was used by attaching the encoder to the synchronous machine, but the position and velocity of the rotor have been estimated by sensor-less method until recently due to the difficulty in attaching and detaching and damage caused by the shaft voltage noise. In this paper, Rotor initial(stationary state) position estimation, forced commutation control(speed less than 10%), and natural commutation control(speed more than 10%) method using magnetic flux with integrated terminal voltage were presented and the sensor-less speed control performance was verified. As a result of making and evaluating the 29 kVA synchronous machine and the starting device, the performance of each control mode was satisfactory. Furthermore, the applied technology is expected to be used for the development of the gas turbine starter of tens of MW class and the field application.

  • In order for the support of the ETCS (Electronic Toll Collection System) model, which have been operated successfully till now, with multi-lane service, the wireless communication system of the multi-lane-supported ETCS based on RF-DSRC (Radio Frequency - Dedicated Short Range Communication) was used. In this paper, the SME algorithm attaching data flow and form into RFID communication technology was newly suggested to overcome technical problems on RF-DSRC communication system. In addition, in order to verify the SME algorithm, experiments based on ETCS and 900Mhz RFID were carried out. From the result of realization experiment of RFID dependent on the velocity and precision experiment of information inside of RFID, we can see that RFID is detected below 70Km/h and the precision of estimation is more than 90%.

  • This paper describes a method of evaluating seismic system performance of highway transportation network in California. The basic element that plays a crucial role in this study is the fragility information of highway bridges in Caltrans' (California Department of Transportation) freeway network. The bridge fragility information is expressed as a function of the ground motion intensity, such as peak ground acceleration (PGA) or peak ground velocity (PGV). Network damage was evaluated under the 1994 Northridge earthquake and scenario earthquakes. A probabilistic model was developed to determine the effect of repair of bridge damage on the improvement of the network performance as days passed after the event. As an example, the system performance degradation measured in terms of an index, “Drivers Delay”, is calculated for the Los Angeles area transportation system, and losses due to Drivers Delay with and without retrofit were estimated.

  • The local geologic and dynamic site characteristics, which include soil profiles, shear wave velocity profiles and depths to the bed rock were gathered from 148 sites all over the Korean peninsula and those values are compared to those in the western USA. Site response analyses were performed based on equivalent linear scheme using design rock-outcrop acceleration of 0.154g which corresponds to the collapse level of earthquake for seismic category I structure. The results show that the amplification factor based on Korean seismic design guideline underestimates the motion in short-period range and overestimates the motion in mid-period range. It is suggested that the existing Korean seismic guideline based on UBC is required to be modified considering dynamic site characteristics in Korea for the reliable estimation of site amplification.

  • As the growth of world trade has surged rapidly over the past years, the number is expected to continue growing over the coming years. Although the transportation costs can be reduced by using larger vessels, however, new berthing structures have to be constructed in order to cater for the larger vessels. This leads to a need for researching on designing a better berthing structure. For optimization of berthing structure design, we need to provide a better estimation of berthing energy than the previous methods in the existing guidelines. In this study, several berthing parameters were collected from previous works and researches. Moreover, the scenarios were selected efficiently by using a sampling technique. First, the berthing energy was calculated by executing 150 numerical simulations. Then, the numerical simulation results were compared with the results calculated by existing methods quantitatively to investigate the sensitivity of the berthing parameters and the accuracy of existing methods. The numerical method results have shown some deviation with respect to the existing method results in which the degree of deviation varies with the methods and the tendency of differences is dependent on certain berthing parameters. Then, one of the existing methods which has shown a small deviation was selected as a representative method and applied with several safety factors to obtain a suitable safety factor for the design.

  • The estimation functions were proposed for calculating diffusion coefficient, chloride binding, and evaporable water. The program estimating chloride ion penetration was developed on the basis of these functions and the effects of humidity, curing temperature, water-cement ratio, and $C_3$A on chloride penetration were analyzed. The relative humidity increases the depth of chloride ion penetration and the trend becomes greater with aging. On the contrary, the influence of curing temperature on chloride ion penetration decreases with aging. By the way, the rise of $C_3$A in cement increases total chloride concentration on the surface as the bound chloride concentration increases but it decreases total chloride concentration on the inner part as the diffusion velocity of free chloride decreases. The fall of water-cement ratio decreases the chloride penetration depth rapidly. Therefore, the reduction of water-cement ratio may be the most effective method for reducing of the steel corrosion by chloride penetration.
