Vowel Context Effect on the Perception of Stop Consonants in Malayalam and Its Role in Determining Syllable Frequency

  • Background and Objectives: The study investigated vowel context effects on the perception of stop consonants in Malayalam. It also probed into the role of vowel context effects in determining the frequency of occurrence of various consonant-vowel (CV) syllables in Malayalam. Subjects and Methods: The study used a cross-sectional pre-experimental post-test only research design on 30 individuals with normal hearing, who were native speakers of Malayalam. The stimuli included three stop consonants, each spoken in three different vowel contexts. The resultant nine syllables were presented in original form and five gating conditions. The consonant recognition in different vowel contexts of the participants was assessed. The frequency of occurrence of the nine target syllables in the spoken corpus of Malayalam was also systematically derived. Results: The consonant recognition score was better in the /u/ vowel context compared with /i/ and /a/ contexts. The frequency of occurrence of the target syllables derived from the spoken corpus of Malayalam showed that the three stop consonants occurred more frequently with the vowel /a/ compared with /u/ and /i/. Conclusions: The findings show a definite vowel context effect on the perception of the Malayalam stop consonants. This context effect observed is different from that in other languages. Stop consonants are perceived better in the context of /u/ compared with the /a/ and /i/ contexts. Furthermore, the vowel context effects do not appear to determine the frequency of occurrence of different CV syllables in Malayalam.

  • 모바일 환경이 보편화됨에 따라 사용자의 상황을 인식하고 관련된 각종 컨텍스트를 공유하는 기술에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 컨텍스트 공유는 사용자의 의사소통을 보다 풍부하게 할 뿐만 아니라 사회적 관계를 원만하게 유지하도록 도와준다. 최근 각종 메신저나 모바일 어플리케이션에는 간단한 수준의 사용자 컨텍스트 공유가 적용되고 있으나 사용자 환경이 복잡해짐에 따라 더욱 다양한 컨텍스트의 인식과 공유가 요구된다. 본 논문에서는 다양한 센서 정보를 수집하여 사용자의 대표적 컨텍스트인 감정, 스트레스, 행동을 동적 확률 모델을 이용하여 인식하고 메신저에 연동하여 컨텍스트 정보를 공유하는 상황인지 메신저를 개발한다. 다양한 컨텍스트를 인식하기 위한 다중모델을 효과적으로 구성하고 아이콘 방식으로 컨텍스트를 표시한다. 개발한 시스템을 사용자 시나리오를 바탕으로 평가하여 유용성을 검증하였다.

피타고라스 정리에 대한 Euclid의 증명이 갖는 교육적 함의 (Pedagogical implication of Euclid's proof about Pythagorean theorem)

  • This study analyzed the mathematical and didactical contexts of the Euclid's proof about Pythagorean theorem and compared with the teaching methods about Pythagorean theorem in school mathematics. Euclid's proof about Pythagorean theorem which does not use the algebraic methods provide students with the spatial intuition and the geometric thinking in school mathematics. Furthermore, it relates to various mathematical concepts including the cosine rule, the rotation, and the transfor-mation which preserve the area, and so forth. Visual demonstrations can help students analyze and explain mathematical relationship. Compared with Euclid's proof, Algebraic proof about Pythagorean theorem is very simple and it supplies the typical example which can give the relationship between algebraic and geometric representation. However since it does not include various spatial contexts, it forbid many students to understand Pythagorean theorem intuitively. Since both approaches have positive and negative aspects, reciprocal complementary role is required in pedagogical aspects.

Inferences Frequently Used in Earth Science

  • Various research methods have been used in science depending on the various contexts. This implies that certain methods or inferences may be more frequently used in earth science. The purpose of the study are to explore the contexts of earth science, and the inferences frequently used in earth science. The context earth science research is quite different from that of other areas of natural science in terms of its time scale, space scale, accessibility, complexity, and controllability. The purpose of earth science research is twofold: historical and causal. The inferences frequently used in earth science are abduction and prediction. Abductive inferences go from the resulting state to controlling state. Predictive inferences go from hypothesis to expected data.

이산 속성 컨텍스트를 위한 시퀀스 매칭 기반 컨텍스트 예측 (Context Prediction based on Sequence Matching for Contexts with Discrete Attribute)

  • 지금까지 컨텍스트 예측 방법들은 이산 속성 컨텍스트를 대상으로 예측을 수행한 경우와 연속 속성 컨텍스트를 대상으로 예측을 수행한 경우로 나뉘어서 발전되어 왔다. 대부분의 예측 방법들은 컨텍스트의 획득 환경이나 특성에 맞게 특정 도메인에서 각각 예측 알고리즘을 작성하여 사용하여 왔기 때문에, 다양한 환경과 특성을 갖는 사용자의 컨텍스트를 대상으로 예측을 수행하기가 어렵다. 본 논문에서는 특정 도메인이나 컨텍스트의 특성에 국한되지 않고 이산 속성이나 연속 속성 컨텍스트들에 모두 적용 가능한 컨텍스트 예측 방법을 제안한다. 이를 위해 컨텍스트 속성간의 연관규칙을 고려하여 컨텍스트를 시퀀스로 생성하고, 컨텍스트 속성별 가변 가중치를 적용시켜 시퀀스 매칭 기반의 컨텍스트 예측을 수행한다. 제안한 방법을 평가하기 위해 이산 속성 컨텍스트와 연속 속성 컨텍스트에 각각 시뮬레이션한 결과 이산 속성 컨텍스트에서 80.12%, 연속 속성 컨텍스트에서 81.43%의 예측 정확도로 기존 예측방법들과 비슷한 성능을 보였다.

The Effective Factors of Professional Learning : Study on Accounting Firms in Korea

  • The purpose of this study is to substantiate the affecting factors of informal learning outcomes for professions in various dimensions of an individual and organization. In specific, the study analyzed the effects of learning motivation, job characteristics, and a supportive learning environment which have on task-related knowledge acquisition, adapting to organization and understanding contexts, relationship formation, and improving self-development-ability. The participants of the study were 261 professionals working at four major accounting firms in South Korea. Multiple regression models were applied step by step for analysis. In this study, the informal learning of professionals working at four major accounting firms is influenced by various factors of learning motivation, job characteristics, and a supportive learning environment. The detailed analysis results were as follows. Firstly, peer-support showed the most positive effect on task-related knowledge acquisition. Secondly, for adapting to organization and understanding contexts, task autonomy showed the greatest effect. Thirdly, peer-support was found to be the most important factor for relationship formation. Fourthly, for improving self-development ability, learning goal orientation showed to be the most important factor. The various factors facilitated the professional learning by empirical identification. The study presented practical implications for creating an effective informal learning support environment.

사회적 상호작용에서의 의복의 의미 ( I ) - 한복을 중심으로 - (Meaning of Clothing in Social Contexts: Emphasis on Korean Clothing, Study I)

  • This research studied the first impression of a stranger in various styles of Korean or Western attire in several socially interacting contexts. The semantic differential scale was used to analyze the responses of IHO male and 180 female university students to line drawings of male and female figures in Korean or Western formal and informal attire in campus, office, and ambiguous contexts. The data were analyzed by factor analysis, one-way ANOVA, and Duncan's test. Six factors emerged to account for dimensions of first impressions. These were evaluation, potency, prestige and formality, conformity, likableness, and conspicuousness. Clothing styles had a larger effect on responses than context. Persons in traditional Korean styles were perceived as more prestigious, formal, individualistic, and less competent than those in Western styles. Conversely persons in both formal and informal Western styles were perceived as more attractive and more competent than those in traditional Korean styles. Persons in casual Western styles were considered least prestigious and least formal. A weak interaction effect was found between clothing style and social context.

  • 다양한 개인 의료 장비들이 등장함에 따라 개인 의료 컨텍스트가 풍부하게 수집되고 있다. 이렇게 수집된 의료 컨텍스트를 분석함으로써 소프트웨어적으로 질병을 진단하기 위한 노력이 이어지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 의료 전문가들이 사용하는 의료 분석 기법을 정형화하고, 각 의료 기법을 실현화하기 위한 추론 기법을 식별하며, 추론기법의 적용 지침을 제시한다. 또한, 의료 기법을 제공하는 추론 시스템을 PoC 수준에서 개발하고, 실제 의료 컨텍스트를 분석하여 질병 진단 실험을 수행함으로써 제시하는 의료 분석 기법 및 추론 기법 적용 지침의 실효성과 그 효과를 검증한다.

Developing the Korean EFL Readability Formula (KRF)

  • It has long been shown that Korean EFL students have not practiced extensive reading in school curriculum. Their vocabulary knowledge is limited and a tool for measuring text readability for them has hardly been developed and used. The study aimed to check the current situations on the above issues and develop a reading framework appropriate for extensive reading within the national English curriculum, including the Readability Formula in Korean EFL contexts (KRF). The study consists of four steps. The study does a survey to check the current Korean EFL situations on the issues, suggests a new vocabulary learning size, develops a readability formula as a tool for measuring text difficulty based on the newly suggested vocabulary size, and finally validates the formula with various kinds of English books, including the primary and secondary school English textbooks. It is expected that this study will provide a model for the vocabulary size and the readability index for extensive reading in EFL contexts.

Study on Consumer Preferences for Discount Presentations in Different Purchase Contexts

  • Purpose: There is still lack of guidance for merchants toward price discount presentations (absolute/relative), especially for consumers in different purchase contexts. Based on the general evaluability theory, this study investigates consumers' preferences for the presentation of discounts in various contexts through experiments. Research design, data and methodology: The relationship between discount presentation and consumers' preference is investigated in Study 1 using a two-factor between-subject design of 2 (purchase type: material vs. experiential) ×2 (discount type: absolute vs. relative). The Moderating effect of thinking mode has been examined in Study 2 via a multi-factor intergroup design of 2 (purchase type: material vs. experiential) ×2 (discount type: absolute vs. relative) ×2 (cognitive load: high vs. low). One-way ANOVA and planned contrast have been performed for analysis. Results: Experiment 1 reveals that consumers prefer absolute discounts rather than relative discounts when in material purchases. However, when in experiential purchases, they are willing to choose relative discounts. Experiment 2 verifies the boundary conditions of matching effect and illustrates the generation of matching effect is determined by thinking mode. Conclusions: Our study enriches the theories of purchase type and thinking mode. Simultaneously, the results provide practical guidance for merchants to formulate the discount presentation and distribution pricing strategies.
